Luke's Diner - January 7, 2006

Luke's is open for the night, and there is a small sign covered in glitter that says "Welcome New Students" tacked to the window.

Luke doesn't scowl at the sign. Much.

Meanwhile, Luke is behind the counter, boxing up a few errant Christmas decorations that seemed to have hidden themselves in various corners of the diner, and packing away all the coffee beans in vacuum-sealed containers "to keep the aroma from wafting".

"... so apparently there is really something going on between them," Veronica says, pushing the diner door open. "God, I wonder who ended up getting that message!"

Luke looks up, and waits for Veronica to finish her sentence, clearing off the counter.

"Hey, Veronica. What can I get for you? I got pie. You want pie? It's good pie."

"Hey, Luke, sure, why not," she says, grabbing a seat at the counter. "You have apple?"

"Of course."

He goes to get her a piece of pie, and as it is warming up he comes back to the counter.

"Last semester at Fandom High, right? Are you excited?" Luke asks, as if he is a little unsure at to what classifies as exciting.

Veronica shrugs. "I guess. I'll be glad if I can graduate without dealing with any more insanity."

She looks at Piper. "You going to share the piece of apple with me? I don't know if I can eat the whole thing."

"Agreed," Piper says, referring to graduating.

"I don't mind sharing."

When Luke sets the pie and two forks in front of the girls, Veronica says, "Oh, hey Luke? I talked to my friend the other day. He's going to be getting to town tomorrow. I got all his paperwork straightened out for you, right? He just has to give you the security deposit?"

"Everything's in order. The diner will be open tomorrow, so he can stop by with the deposit then."

Luke pushes a napkin dispenser over. "Need anything to drink?"

"Great! I'll stop by to introduce you guys," she says. "Hmm, he's coming out by motorcycle, so I guess he won't need much help unpacking."

She shrugs. "Coffee is good for me." She looks at Piper.

Piper looks at Luke. "Coffee is good for me, too."

"Two coffees, coming right up."

Luke goes to get two cups, leaving the girls to talk.

Piper turns her attention back to Veronica. "So, did you get any other strange phone calls?"

Veronica rolls her eyes. "Oh, a few," she says. "You?"

"Yeah, I got a few," Piper says.

"Apparently, Marty's weird message about making out like ferrets went to Phoebe. So she called Angela to tell her about it. The message went to me instead. I think you can see where I'm going with this..."

"Marty left a message about making out like ferrets?" Veronica says, blinking.

"Yes, it was meant for Angela."

Veronica wrinkles her nose. "Oh, I so did not need that mental image."

"Oh, I know. I think the message went to Janet, too. I think she was trying to call him back to tell him he's insane, but I got the message instead. So confusing."

"Tell me about it. I got a message from Callisto about removing my roommate's heart with a spoon, or something, and I couldn't figure out what the hell either of you did to piss her off," Veronica says, shaking her head. "Oh, and speaking of Callisto, according to one of my other messages, apparently Angel asked her out on a date."

"Oh god. I really wouldn't want to piss off Callisto" Piper says, giggling. "That reminds me, I got a message from Logan telling me to meet him somewhere. I thought he might have been trying to reach you instead. I called you to let you know, but you obviously didn't get it. I wonder who did?"

"Hmm, I doubt it was me he was trying to get," she says. "I got a message from him about my 'crush on Angel' that was pretty nasty. And I can't imagine who else that would have been meant for."

Piper giggles. "I'm curious about that, too."

"I'm still concerned about the message from Phoebe," Piper sighs. "She didn't mention Marty in the call, so I assumed she was talking about Lindsey. And I called him about it. So hoping that message was misdirected."

"Wait, what did her message say?"

"She said my boyfriend was hitting on her," Piper says, sighing again. "I'm pretty sure that message was actually meant for Angela, but I didn't know it at the time."

"Well, if she got Marty's message about making out like ferrets, that's a good assumption. And with all the screwups yesterday, I'm sure Lindsey didn't get your message."

"I really hope not. Otherwise, I have some apologizing to do."

"Lindsey doesn't strike me as the type who would hit on his girlfriend's sister," Veronica assures her.

She checks her watch. "Hey, you wanna head over to Caritas? I need to talk to Lorne."

"I know, which is why I'm hoping that he didn't get my angry message."

She nods at Veronica. "Sure."
