Dragging his tail like a tail-dragging thing, Jack sits at the bar. "Beer. Please, dear God, beer. ~~Beer foamy.~~"

"Jack, what's wrong?" Veronica asks, concerned.

Jack blinks and notices Veronica. "I talked to my mom last night. Told her the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. And she said, and I quote, it was worst than the time I tried to kill her. So your idea about coming clean? Maybe not the best one ever. Now can I have a beer?" he asks plaintively.

Veronica winces, but motions for Tino to pour Jack a beer. "Jack, I'm so sorry," she says. "I... do you want me to talk to her?"

Jack accepts the beer gratefully. "Nah. What I want is that moment back in the hospital room when it would have been easy -- okay, not easy, but better -- to say, 'Hey, Mom, sorry to confuse you since you just had brain surgery yesterday, but Shane and I are adopted as of a few weeks ago.'" He sips the beer and considers that he does have a time machine in the general vicinity...

"Well, unfortunately we can't change the past," Veronica says sympathetically. "But I know your mom will forgive you. She loves you. She's just upset."

"I hate that I upset her," Jack says grumpily. "It's like this knot in my stomach that won't go away. I want to scream or hit something... or get drunk." He lifts the beer in Veronica's direction and gulps.

"I wish I could say or do something to make you feel better," she says sincerely.

Jack sighs and plops his chin down on his folded arms. "Professor Chaucer says I should go talk to her. I just... don't want to. Not right now. Maybe tomorrow." Barely audible, he mutters, "I don't want to make her cry again."

Veronica reaches over and awkwardly pats his shoulder. "She'll forgive you. I know CJ. She couldn't ever hate you."

"You didn't see how hurt she was. How angry and betrayed and... disgusted. Less than two months ago she adopted me, and she already is completely disillusioned with what kind of ass I am. I need more beer," he says miserably.

Veronica fills his glass and hands him the second beer. "Jack, I'm pretty sure she knew exactly what kind of ass you were and adopted you anyway. She's been through a lot in the last few weeks, with the accident and Shane disappearing. She'll forgive you. Trust me."

Jack continues drinking beer, ~~pouting~~ brooding, and not considering what alcohol on an empty stomach is likely to do to him.
