In search of rollerblades (Locked to walter_n_wires)

Victor lead Walter to a sporting goods shop he had passed by earlier.

"Welcome to Xtreme Sports!" a cheerful woman greeted as they entered the building. "Can I help you with anything?"

"Yeah, we're trying to get some rollerblades," Victor told him. "Can you show us where they are?"

"Of course!" the sales clerk said with a smile. Soon the two boys were in the skating section of the store, left alone with the promise to return if they needed any help.

Walter nearly smacked himself in the forehead. He'd run into a similar problem with bowling when it came to socks.

"I don't usually wear socks," he admitted ruefully, pulling his trouser leg up to expose a bare ankle. "I suppose I'll have to buy some more socks while I'm here."

"You know, in some countries that was porn just there," he joked. "Actually, if you're not used to wearing socks, you might want to double up at first. Rollerblading can really chafe."

He looked around at the different brands, trying to find a good one. "What size show do you wear, anyway?"

Walter waved his ankle at Victor again and grinned before grabbing a pack of socks. "Double up, right."

He wandered up behind Victor to look at the skates. "I don't know what size I wear. I noticed when I was buying socks the other day that sizing was different from what I'm used to."

He pulled a box off the shelf and held a skate next to his foot to compare sizes.

"Well, you're from London, right? I think you guys have a different measuring system than we do in the USA." He came up from behind the boy and placed his hands on Walter's waist. He placed his right foot next to Walter's and compared. "I think you're a little smaller than I am, and I'm an eleven. Let's try a ten and see how it fits." Then he paused, tingles walking up and down his skin as he realized the position he was in. Slowly, he backed off and cleared his throat. "Um, okay..let's try some tens, then," he said, reaching up and grabbing some off the shelf for Walter.

Walter stopped himself from leaning back when Victor put his hands on his waist. What was he doing? Victor didn't need him sending mixed messages. Hell, he didn't even know what messages he wanted to send. It was so damned nice to have a normal friend, what if he screwed things up?

He wondered what Victor would think of being thought of as a normal friend?

"Right. Ten." He took the skates from Victor and tried them on, standing and working to find the proper balance to not wobble.

Victor took Walter's shoulders, this time to help him balance. "Careful, Walter. I don't want to have to take you to the hospital tonight. Green Jell-o and everything..."

"I will be more than a little embarrassed if a pair of shoes with wheels land me in the hospital," Walter commented as he found his balance, making a show of taking much longer to find it than he really needed, just because he was enjoying the "help."

"Well, hopefully you don't have to worry about that," Victor said softly, embarrassed himself about how much he was enjoying this. He let Walter go, and, satisfied that the other boy was balanced, went to get his own pair that suspiciously looked just like Walter's on.

Walter experimentally moved around a little and gathered up his shoes while Victor got his skates on.

Fishing in his pocket for his wallet to pay for his unexpected purchase, he gave Victor a grin. "You're the experienced one. I'll just follow your lead."

"Put that away," Victor said, standing up with his skates on. He grabbed the boxes and bags that they had opened and prepared to head to the register. "I mean it, let me pay."

"Don't be silly," Walter protested as he followed Victor to the front. "I'm the one with a job."

"And I'm the one who doesn't care. This was my idea, so I should pay. Watch out for the broom there."

"Alright, but you're going to let me have a turn to pay another time. Okay?" Walter thought that would be a reasonable tradeoff. It guaranteed they'd have to do something else together sometime.

"Of course. How generous would I be if I didn't?" he winked and paid the cashier, making sure to get bags for thier shoes. After he got his reciept, he put his wallet bakc in his pocket and grabbed Walter's hand butt arm and lead him out of the store.
