A Park Bench- Monday Afternoon

Once again, Orlin had nothing to do. Being the handyman for Quark had so far been very easy, he didn't do anything. He sat on the bench, the remaining, undismantled discman playing Scissor Sisters from the head phones hanging around his neck. It was a nice, if somewhat brisk day. Orlin stretched out his legs and let the sun warm him slightly.

He had had a good weekend, he knew a few people, he had learned he could sing opera ~~in Italian~~ and dance very well. Life was good.

He pondered what he felt like randomly creating this week. Maybe he could modify the laundry rooms washer... maybe Quark wouldn't notice....

After what had happened in the lounge this morning, Phoebe had no desire to hang out there between classes, and that's how she found herself at the park. She saw someone she didn't recognize sitting on the bench and she approached with a smile.

"Hi...is it okay if I sit here?"

Orlin looked up from his thoughts and smiled back, "Not at all, please sit miss...?"

Phoebe sat down. "My name is Phoebe. And you are?"

"Orlin," Orlin said, settling comfortably, " What brings you outside this fine day?" He asked complacently.

Phoebe smiled at him, although the sadness didn't leave her eyes. "Avoiding unpleasant run-ins with people I used to be close to. How about you?"

Orlins' brow furrowed slightly. That was a shame.

"Well, I am thinking about how much I am enjoying myself here in Fandom Town," Orlin said thoughfully, "I have met many people and have some new friends, for the most part people are very friendly." He thought of the mayor and smiled slightly.

"What caused your problems?" He asked Phoebe. "If you don't mind me asking that is of course."

Phoebe smiled gently at him. "What causes all problems? Love. I've decided that real love doesn't exist."

"It exists." Orlin said firmly. "And its when you cannot find it that you must believe in it the most." He looked thoughtful and looked up, searching his mind for anything else that might be relevant.

"Everytime I have tried to believe in it, it backfires and I get hurt, Orlin." She bit her lip. "Do you believe in supernatural and paranormal events?"

Orlin burst out laughing. "Of course I do my dear. What I was before would have been described as the most supernatural of all paranormal events." His eyes crinkled up in a smile.

"I'm engaged to marry a demon," she said calmly, waiting for him to laugh at her. "I was in love with another demon, but now he wants to kill me because he doesn't want me with anyone else."

"Do you want to marry a demon?" Orlin asked speculatively, "They are only demonic to human sesabilities anyways. To their own people they are perfectly normal, and it is humans that are... off. And if this demon feels so strongly about you being with some one else it could be love. Do you love him in return?"

"I don't know if I do or not," she said honestly. "However, I promised him that I would marry him, and we Halliwell witches always keep our promises. The demon I'm to marry? I know he doesn't love me. I also know he won't let anyone hurt me. I'm not in love with him, but I do ahve great affection for him." She sighed. "As for the other one? I was deeply in love with him. Now? There's more fear than love there. He doesn't want me away from the other demon because of his love for me. He only wants me because I'm with someone who isn't him."

"You are marrying for conveniance then?" Orlin said flatly. That was ridiculous. "From what I have gathered from what I have read of this interesting book known as the New Testament, marriage is the most holy of unions, and should not be entered for anything less then love. I believe that that would be considered sacriligious. However, I am not trained in the ways of this belief, but I do believe that you should find out what this demon that you love, and love to fear it seems, actually feels for you. It may be terrifying, but not doing anything could cause you to regret something for the rest of your life."

Phoebe sighed. "Orlin... when I originally made the promise, it was to protect someone I loved. The Bible also teaches that we're supposed to keep our promises and our vows. There is nothing convenient about any of this."

Orlin looked abashed, "I actually haven't finished it yet, " he admitted shamefacedly, " Who are you trying to protect now though? Yourself or that other person? And some promises cannot be kept, or vows." Orlin sighed, he had totally broken some vows, and then ended up destroying a whole planet because of it.

"The other person."

"Why?"

Phoebe fidgetted. "Because I promised I would protect them."

Orlin raised an eyebrow, and with his ex-infinte knowledge asked the question that is the beginnig of all creation.

"Why?"

Phoebe fidgetted again. "You'll laugh, just like everyone else has."

Orlin waited, there was nothing he could say that would assure her. Phoebe needed to say it herslef.

"Because I care."

"And who will care for your heart?" Orlin asked after a long moment. He thought about asking whom she was protecting, but saved that question for later.

"Nobody cares for my heart, Orlin."

"I care." He said simply.

Phoebe blinked. She didn't expect that. "You don't even know me, Orlin. If the people I have cared about don't, how can you?"

Alone and depressed, Phoebe?

Orlin sighed, "Sometimes you do not need to know the person well for you to care Phoebe. I know what it's like to be alone. I do not wish it on anyone" He shuddered. A millenia was really to long, especially when... Orlin squished the thought.

"It hurts."

"Painfully," Orlin agreed, "Want to tell me?" He asked, he did not move closer, or move in anyway, but he somehow managed to emanate a comforting some one who is hurt vibe.

"I fell in love with someone I never should have. I was willing to do anything to protect him. Then, I found out that not only did he sleep with my sister, he was threatening one of my closest friends after promising that he'd leave her alone." She swallowed. "I went to the one I knew wouldn't let me do something stupid. I wasn't supposed to care about this other guy, but I do. Not like love, but I do care. Now? My sister isn't speaking to me and only about three or four of my friends are having anything to do with me."

"You do not choose who you fall in love with." Orlin said reflectively, "And you had no control over those circumstance." He wondered if she would elaborate on these 'some one' people. It was rather confusing to follow. Although... "Perhaps the others also need time to heal?" He asked, referring to her frineds and sister.
