Monday Afternoon: On the rocks by the beach

No classes today. And Lana just needed to get *out* for a bit. She dressed warmly, threw a book, a blanket and a thermos of hot chocolate into her backpack and headed out to the beach. It seemed like forever since she'd been out there and she missed the quiet peace of sitting up on the rocks watching the waves.

Within minutes she could feel herself relaxing and starting to feel more centered. She'd needed this.

Phoebe hadn't had to look very hard to find Lana. She climbed up on the rocks next to her friend and gave her a smiel.

"Phoebe! Hi!" Lana leaned over and gave her friend a hug. "Come sit with me. I'll even share my blanket!"

Phoebe grinned and settled down next to Lana. "How's your day off been?"

"So far so good. I just had to get out of the dorms for a while. Give myself a break from everything, you know?"

"Gods, don't I," Phoebe nodded in agreement as she looked over the water.

"So... how are you doing with... everything?" Lana looks a little concerned about her friend, especially after the crying jag last week.

Phoebe sighed and was silent for a long moment. "Yeah, I guess I should explain what happened. I told Cole on Valentine's night that we couldn't get back together anytime soon."

"Oh Phoebe..." Lana looks almost as crestfallen as her friend does. "I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do?"

"Tell me that I'm not being stupid by sticking to my guns on this one point?"

She sighed. "Everyone else around me seems to think it's for the best and that I shouldn't be upset because what he wants to do can endanger so many people. I think you and Kiki are probably the only two who understand how painful this is for me to make such a choice."

Lana makes a face at her. "You know I don't think you're being stupid. You have to do what you have to do. But yeah, I know how painful this has to be for you. Is there anything I can do? Do you want me to try and talk to him or something?"

"Tell him that no matter what happens, I don't hate him and I still love him so much that it's killing me not to be with him?"

"I can do that." Lana reaches over and gives her a hug. "I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. I don't know what I'd do if it was Shep and I in your situation."

She shudders. "I don't even like thinking about that. I wish I could just make it all go away for you."

Phoebe leans her head on Lana's shoulder. "I know you do, Lana, I do, too. Unfortunately the only person that can stop this and make it go away is Cole."

She sighs. "I got into a fight with Crowley Thursday night, real late."

"Oh no, what's *he* up to now?" Something about even his name made Lana's skin twitch.

Phoebe bit her lip and then looked at lana. "Don't say anything to anyone?"

"You know I won't."

"Crowley found my notes I was making about trying to seduce Cole to get his plans and stop him. He was... he was really angry, lana."

Lana felt cold to her bones. "He scares me, Phoebe," she said quietly. "I know you feel that he's always been good to you, but he scares me. And I just *know* he has some sort of ulterior motive for all this. He didn't... hurt you, did he?"

Phoebe hesitated. "No, not really. He scared me, though. I've never seen him that angry." She sighed. "I know that I should ahve talked to him before I did anything..."

"Not really? Meaning sort of he did, yes?" Lana looks fiercely protective. "Phoebe... He is not a good... whatever he is! And I don't think he has your best interests at heart."

"He didn't harm me," Phoebe is quick to assure her friend. "But he could have... he could have ~~thrown me onto the couch~~ tossed me across the room and he didn't."

She waved a hand. "I know he doesn't have my best interests at heart, Lana, he has his at heart."

Lana takes a deep breath. "I don't think you should be staying there, Phoebe. I know you can't move back in with Cole, but I'd feel so much better if you were back in the dorms and not half-way across town where he can walk in on you whenever he chooses. I'm afraid for you."

"I can't," she says softly. "But, I can tell you something that will make you feel a little bit better?" She pulls the necklace out from under her shirt. "This is from Aziraphale by way of Crowley. It'll protect me."

She looks at Lana seriously. "Also? Cole and I have always been soul-linked. We're can't be together, but the link still works. If I call out for him, he can be with me in an instant. No matter what, I know if something happens and I really need his help, he'll come."

Lana nodded slowly. "That makes me feel a little better. And knowing that Cole will come as soon as you call him. Okay."

"No matter what's going on between us right now... if I needed him to help me, he would."

"You're lucky to have that." Lana is quiet for a moment. "There's a friend of mine back home, kind of like that. It seemed like no matter what happened to me or where, if I was in trouble Clark showed up and saved the day. It was kind of weird being here and knowing that he wouldn't be around for me like that."
