Imperial Junkyard [Sunday afternoon]

Anakin, with his newly completed droid whining about how it hated driving in the golf cart next to him, came to a screeching halt in the center of the junkyard.

Today he had a Very Important Plan.

He was going to build a podracer. It would be the fastest ever!

Surely nothing could go wrong with this idea.

He tore the golf cart down to its basic components, then began scouring the junkyard for other pieces he would need.

Sam wandered by the junkyard on the way to school from Daniel's. As you do. "Watcha doin', Anakin?"

"Makin' a podracer," he said, messing with the golf cart engine.

"Oh do make him stop," a fussy voice replied from where he was lying against a pile of junk.

"Quiet," Anakin said, waving his hand irritably at the droid.

"Can I help," Sam asked, already climbing over stuff Anakin had thrown off the golf cart. "And who's that?"

"That's a new Threepio," Anakin said casually. "Made him last night with stuff from my room." He frowned. "He's still a little too worry-y."

He grinned. "And of course you can help." He rattled of a list of parts he was still looking for. "You think you can find those?"

"What's a Threepio?" She eyed the droid suspiciously.

Sam grinned. "Okay, I can do that." She repeated the list over and over in her head as she brought parts back, one at a time, and dragging some of them because she was little. She peered over his shoulder to watch.

"I am C-3P0, human cyborg relations," the droid recited. Anakin rolled his eyes. "I can't seem to make that turn off," he said. "Sorry."

He finally finished tinkering and stood back.

"So," he asked. "What do you think? (http://www.theforce.net/skystation/art/apod1.jpg) Should we start it up?"

Sam was bouncing in her sneakers. "Yes. Yes, yes, yes, we should start it up now!"

"Will it fly? Can we fly in it, Anakin?"

Sam gets to podrace, whee!

Anakin thought about it. "Well, okay..." he said slowly. "But Sam gets to go first because she helped me build this one. And Rory's too little for this kind of podracer." He shrugged. "Don't think you can reach the handles. And it's loud."

"Can I ride with someone else?" Rory asked, eyes wide.

"You can ride with me," Anakin promised. "But you have to promise not to touch anything."

"Yay! Thanks, Anakin," Sam said, already climbing into the cockpit and ignoring most of the conversation going on around her. "How do I make it work? Can I do loops and barrel rolls?"

Anakin shook his head hard. "No, it'll tangle the engines and that's very bad. It makes things explode." He gave her a quick tuturial on the control handles. "Up, down, left, right, engines and brakes," he said, pointing them out. "And that big one is for acceleration. Try not to hit any of the buildings or go too far across the causeway, okay?"

"My turn!" Peter said, hopping in. "Up, down, left, right, engines and brakes," Peter recited, remembering the instructions to Sam. "And the big one makes me go, right?"

"That's right," Anakin said. "Don't hit any buildings if you can help it. It makes people mad."

"People get mad too easily," Peter said. "Here we goooooooooooooooo," Peter started to say as he hit the accelerator and took off.

"Loud!" Rory exclaimed again, covering her ears. "Bye Peter!"

Anakin walked over and put his hands over Rory's. "Better?" he asked.

"What?" Rory yelled. "M'ears are covereded."

"I wanna ride now!" Rory declared, toddling over and attempting to climb in.

Anakin gave her a boost, then climbed in behind her. "Now no touching anything," he said. "I have to concentrate."

"Won't," Rory assured him. "Do I needta hang on t'somethin'? Is there a seatbelty?"

Anakin reached down and pulled the seatbelt around both of them. "There," he said with a smile. "And whatever happens, don't pull on my arms, okay? They're what I'm steering with."

"Won't," Rory repeated, covering her ears because, as established, she's not a fan of the loud noises.

"Here we go," Anakin cried, punching the accelator button and rocketing past Peter and Sam.
