He could hear the oncoming profit.

Something told Quark that today ~~would be a good day to actually post for once~~ he should surface from his multi-week Slug-O-Cola binge in his apartment, and actually man the desk for once. He had a feeling that he was going to be able to make money today.

Or, at least, make what the hoo-mons laughingly call money. Because paper money still makes him laugh.

How many nuns would a nunchuck chuck if a nunchuck would chuck nuns?

Ellie arrived in Fandom Tuesday morning and headed for the apartment complex in the information packet the school had sent her. She was hoping to get an apartment with access to the roof.

Elliot had been mailed her key, so she was able to get into #7 and start arranging her stuff almost as soon as she got onto the island.

The only problem was, her shower did not work, and she was covered in dust bunnies and other assorted moving ick.

It was not a happy Elliot who went to look for the super.

Quark smirked. His profit-sense had been tingling.

"Can I help you?" he asked from behind his desk.

Quark looked Elliot over. If he had an eyebrow, he'd raise.

"You look like hell," he said.

"I'm a new teacher at the school," Ellie said, trying not to stare at Quark. "I was told I could find an apartment here."

Elliot blinked at the landlord. Huh. She wasn't aware children with birth defects that severe could survive.

Still, she was a doctor. She wouldn't stare. She'd be completely calm and collected. "There's no hot water in my shower and did you know plastic surgery has gotten really good now?"

Oops.

Quark scowled a little. "I'm not sure lobe enhancement surgery is for me," he said. "Anyways, you're wanting to find Orlin or Harper. They're the fix-it folks around here." Quark scribbles down a pair of phone numbers onto a piece of paper. "Anything else I can do?"

"We've got a few open apartments, yes," Quark said. "Anything in particular you were looking for?"

"Do you have anything with access to the roof?" Ellie asked. "I like to stargaze and may want to set up my telescope."

Elliot laughed anxiously. "Lobe enhancement, that's a good one." She accepted the slip of paper.

"Not really, just wanted to meet you. I'm Elliot Reid, I'm staying in #7 this summer and teaching first aid at the school?"

"I'm Quark," he said, pressing a hand against his chest. "As long as you don't burn down the building, we'll get along fine."

Quark is definitely improving.

As he totally didn't insinuate that he prefers his females without clothes at all with that statement.

"We've got elevators that go to the roof," Quark said. "But if you're looking for something close, we do have a couple apartments open on the top floor."

"I haven't burned anything down lately," Elliot said, eyes a little nervous. "So it should be good, Mr ... Quark."

"Is there anything about town I should know?"

"Top floor would be perfect," Ellie said. "How much is the rent?"

"Expect everything. That way you'll never be caught by surprise," Quark said. "And don't cross the mayor."

"Depends, do you want the one bedroom or the two bedroom?" Quark asked.

"Got it, I'll watch out for him," Elliot said. "Thanks again. I'll let you know if my water isn't fixed soon."

"Her, actually," Quark said. "But you're welcome, Elliot." He nodded as he smiled.

"Given that I'm a girl called Elliot? And a doctor? I so should not make that mistake," Elliot said, also smiling, but a little embarassed. "Bye."

Ellie thought about that for a moment. "One should be fine," she said. "Most of my equipment will be at the school so I won't need extra space for it."

Quark gave his ~~handwavey~~ reasonable rate. "Take it or leave it," he said. "It's not like there's another apartment complex on the island."

"I'll take it," Ellie said. "The stipend from the school will cover it." She handed Quark her credit card for the necessary charges.

"Good," Quark said, writing down the pertinent information before passing back the card. "You'll be next door to Harper, one of the orderlies. Room nine is yours." He pulled out a key and passed it across the counter. "Anything else I can do?"

"I don't mean to sound rude," Ellie said as she took her key and card, "but are you...not from around here?"

"What gave it away?" Quark said, smirking. "The ears or the teeth?"

"The accent," Ellie deadpanned. She smiled at Quark. "I'd love a chance to talk to you at some point, about where you're from and what it's like."

"If you actually want me to talk about Ferenginar? I can arrange something better," he gestures towards the room across the lobby. "I can show you. Not the real thing, of course, but a replica in the holosuite. Got my brother to program that for me."

"Holosuite?" Ellie repeated. "It projects a holographic image of your world? That would be amazing!"

"It can show a lot more than that," Quark says. "But if you really want to see a rainy, waterlogged planet, I guess that's what you want to see."

"It may be boring to you, but it would be fascinating to me," Ellie said. "I've always dreamed of other worlds and the life on them."

Quark shook his head and chuckled. Typical Hoo-mon.

"Well, let me know when you've got the time. I'm free most of the time," Quark said.

"I certainly will," Ellie said brightly. "Thanks for your help. I should go get settled in now."

"Have fun with that," Quark said with a nod.
