Aeropagitica, Thursday, 8 June

Unlocking the door, Giles frowned at the perpetual overcast. Here's hoping it at least has the decency to rain sticky toffee, if it must rain pudding again.

He's at the counter actually working on writing in his Watcher's Journals. There are various references scattered around him, including the infamous "Book of Vampyre" fished out from under the bed where it certainly never was.

River sneaked into the shop again. She had left the day before confused and upset, but later she had felt relief. Someone had listened, expressed concern and sympathy and been friendly. Besides, books were old fashioned and exciting, and hopefully she could find one to inspire her painting. She really had to move beyond octopuses and tentacled monsters.

"What are you writing?" she asked.

She got no reply, but it didn't matter. He was obviously absorbed in whatever he was writing. She began to look through a box of books, skimming through some of them. One of them, bound in soft pink cloth, had the words 'Kittens from around the World' printed on it in gold. Interestingly, when she opened it, there was very little about kittens in it, but plenty of beautiful, complex patterns and symbols. Good as a painting resource, obviously.

River hoped it wasn't too expensive. She walked up to the counter. "How much is this book?"

That was a lot cheaper than she had expected, but then River hadn't quite got used to the cost of things here. She handed him three dollars and put the book in the plastc bag she was carrying. "What are you writing?" It was obvuiously something very emotional.

Nodding, River wished she could return some of the concern he had expressed for her earlier. "I think recording is a good thing, then. Not forgetting but not holding to close. I hear one should stay away from vampires."

River smiled back, then turned to leave th shop. She noticed a kitten was being sick on the floor, and gently pushed it aside with her foot before opening the door.

Clark came in wearing a shirt that looked as if it were made of kittens.

"I was wondering if you had any books about ducks." Clark said. "Particularly caring for an injured one."
