The Perk, Friday Afternoon

After this mornings Things To Do At The Beach, Janet headed to the Perk to get a mocha before heading back to the dorms, and possibly the book fair.

The pudding had been bad enough. The kittens were adorable, even though Janet herself was more of a dog person. But what was up with all the frogs? She'd had to nudge at least three of them out of the way to open the door to the coffee shop.

After spending the morning doing some *handwavy* research, Veronica decided to walk into town for a chai latte before really getting down to business.

It took her twice as long as usual to walk in because of the frogs and she was rather annoyed by the time she arrived.

"Hey," she greeted when she found herself in line behind Janet. "What's new? I haven't talked to you lately."

"Not much new," said Janet, frowning at the frogs as she ordered her mocha. "Except for the usual weirdness around town. Oh, and I was gone last week. Family thing. How about with you?"

"Everything okay?" Veronica asked. "I've been good. Teaching is going better than I expected and Cameron's giving me some self defense lessons."

"It's fine now, anyway. There was an emergency at home, and my uncle sent someone to pick me up." She paid for her mocha and stepped aside to let Veronica order. "Liz is having fun with photography, she said, though she's not used to a film camera. How're the lessons with Cameron going? Self-defense is always a good thing to know."

Veronica ordered her chai latte before replying. "I think it's going okay," she said. "I'm a little sore today, but not in a bad way. And I honestly haven't been using my film camera as much lately, but there's something really soothing about developing your own pictures. I don't think I'd ever go completely digital."

"My muscles are feeling yesterday's Wilderness Survival hike," said Janet, rolling her eyes. "Callisto went ballistic and dragged us all over the Preserve more than a few times." Janet nodded. "I don't do photography, but there's always more of a feeling of satisfaction from doing something yourself. So I think I understand what you mean, at least."

Cally was trying to exercise a bit of independance today, so she'd wandered off to get her own coffee rather than use some of Anders' coffee from Anders' coffee machine. She ignored the pudding and the frogs, because she was just that oblivious sometimes.

She waved to Janet when she saw her, and wandered up.

"Hey," Cally said. "What's up?"

"Hey, Cally!" exclaimed Janet, smiling brightly. "Frogs, kittens, and pudding are apparently what's up, but nothing else is really going on. How are you?"

Cally nodded. "Yeah, I'm doing pretty well. ABC-DC hasn't had a lot of business lately, so my wallet's getting pretty thin, but that's about my only complaint. Guess people don't break a whole lot anymore... or Bridge's been doing everything and not telling me." Cally shrugged. "Meh. He's prolly too busy with Xander to do any work anyhow."

"I don't think people are breaking things as much," said Janet. "I know I haven't been having many problems, but my laptop hasn't been getting used very much since the school year ended." She smiled. "People do get kind of caught up in new relationships. I'm sure it will get better as the newness tapers off."

"Hey, I'm not complaining about Bridge," Cally said. "I mean, what with Xander graduating and stuff, I'm kinda sad that they won't get as much time as they deserve together, you know?"

"Hey, Cally!" Veronica smiled. "I haven't seen you around lately. How's it going?"

Cally waved to Veronica. "Goes okay. The boy has been kinda dumb about the whole baseball thing, but I'm over it. Otherwise, can't really complain. You?"

Veronica winced slightly. She hadn't considered that Cally would be effected by that. "Sorry about that," she apologized. "I'm pretty good. Teaching is going well. You should sign up for my workshop next session."

"Why are you sorry about that?" Cally asked. "I mean, it's not your fault that my boy is dumb about it. I thought the whole thing was funny. He just is too serious sometimes."

She shrugged. "It's on photography, right? Never really considered doing that, actually. I guess you think it's fun, huh?" She smirked a bit.

Another day, another Latte

Clark settled into a table near the door, another holdover from his reporter days, he could see who came in. A copy of the daily planet sat before him, and at the moment he was doing the crossword.

Chloe came in for her afternoon caffeine fix, and nearly did a double take as she caught sight of the Daily Planet sitting on the table of the man by the door. "Has anyone ever told you that you have excellent taste in newspapers?" she said, by way of greeting.

Clark looked up, blinking and pushing his glasses back up his nose. "I what?" Then what she'd said really registered. "Oh, uhm, no, no they haven't." he grinned. "But thank you, I'm rather fond of the Planet myself."

Chloe nearly bounced at the realization that there was someone else who might be from her own area. "So, are you from Metropolis?"

"Most recently yes." Clark smiled. "I lived there for a few years actually. Are you?"

Tempe came in, her two weetiny kitties cuddled in one arm. She ordered a cinnamon latte for herself and a saucer of milk for the kitties.

She sat down at a table with her book and started reading.

Janet waved, wandering over to stand near Tempe's table. "Hey, Tempe," she said. "Mind if I have a seat?"

"I missed out on the last week in the cabins," said Janet, plopping down and admiring the kittens. "My uncle needed me at home. How did the move back to the dorms go?"

"I'm sorry to hear that. Is everything okay back home?" Tempe asked.

Goldilocks crawled up on the table, and began batting around a packet of sugar, her goldy-colored paws hitting it to one side of the table and then chasing after it to hit it back. Silver Fox lay on the window sill, his grey paws sticking over the side, his brown eyes watching the gold kitty intently.

"The move back to the dorms went well. It's certainly a lot quieter there," Tempe said. "Until, of course, you have a flock of clingy weetiny kittens meow at you all night."
