Alec held the door for Jaye as they stepped into the restaurant, then asked the waitress for a table for two.

"How many more places do we need to visit before I've had the full tour?" He asked with amusement, as they waited to be seated.

"We've still got a few places," she says, watching the hostess head towards them. "It's a big small town."

"Apparently," he agrees, and nods to the waitress as she bids them to follow. "You practically don't ever have to leave, if you don't want to."

"It keeps things new and interesting," she says, sitting down at the table. "Well, until you've been there a few dozen times. And then it still doesn't suck."

"That's a good thing," he says, taking his seat as well. "Right?"

"So far," she says. "Now that you've seen this much of the place, what do you think?"

"I like it," he says, looking at the menu with a grinning glance at Jaye over the top of it. "I think the company helps, but it is a nice place. Not too boring, but you can still relax."

She smiles back at him and says, "I think for my first week or two I begged my family to drag me back home and now they can't drag me back. I like it better here."

"The Republicans? Do you have a big family? I know you mentioned your sister and your parents," he says, kind of curious.

"Yep. I've got a brother, too. He's mostly normal," she says. "Except for that whole theology thing."

Alec cocks an eyebrow. "Is he in a cult?"

"No, that would be interesting." Jaye shakes her head. "He's a comparative religions major. Which is code for 'Spends thousands of dollars on education to end up jobless and living with the parents.'"

"Huh. Are your parents rich?" He puts down the menu as he figures out what he wants, glancing at the chopsticks in momentary confusion.

"They're comfortable. Dad's a doctor, my mom's an author," she says, watching him with the chopsticks as the waitress finally comes over. "Ready?"

Alec nods to her and looks up at the waitress, ordering lemon chicken and fried rice, as they seem simple enough for his first time.

Jaye goes for orange chicken, and the waitress heads off with their order. "Ever had Chinese?" she asks.

"Not like this," he says. "I think I've had something Chinese-ish? At the mess hall, maybe."

"You tried the school food?" she asks, raising an eyebrow. "Brave man."

He shrugs, grinning. "It's been okay so far. And free, which I can afford all the time with no problem."

"Definite plus," she agrees. "Says the girl who hasn't worked in oh, about a month?"

"What was your job again?" Alec smiles. "Movie theater or something, I think I heard."

"Uh huh. Concessions stand on weekends, when they remember to open the place," she says. "Technically. In reality I stand there and make sure the Junior Mints are up to code. Responsibility and all."

"Are you actually fired, or is your boss just crazy?" He remembers the broadcast, yes.

"He's just crazy," she says. "I think I'd probably show up anyway- if the place is open- out of boredom and amazement."

Alec snickers, and the waitress shows up just then to provide them with their dinner. Alec smiles at Jaye, not yet digging in. "Do you like working?"

"Heh. No," she says, going for her napkin to put it over her lap. "I do it because I have to, and because the alternative is being financially tethered to scary people." Jaye tilts her head a little. "Any ideas for what you want to do? I mean, not super soldier, but..."
