Cafe Fina, Tuesday

Walter, despite First Aid, was in a disgustingly good mood. Of course, he hadn't been at work long, but he was beaming at the kitchen staff, friendly with Wadsworth (much to the other butler's surprise and covert amusement,) and generally a happy looking fellow.

Then again, he hadn't seen Alfred yet.

For a cheerful lunch with Walter, come to Cafe Fina. For an impeccably served dinner, Wadsworth's your man.

Walter has a newfound appreciation for the service industry.

Or he's just in a damned good mood.

Either way, he's ready to help you with all your lunchy needs.

"Having a good day, Walter?" Alfred asked as he passed by with a clipboard.

Walter looked up from polishing some silver and smiled. "Yes, sir. And how are you today?"

"Quite well. Although I find myself in a bit of a quandry," Alfred responded.

"Sir?"

"I'm afraid that there's been quite a spill in the kitchens. Terrible mess. Absolutely terrible."

Walter should have had a creeping feeling of doom.

But he didn't.

"Yes, sir?"

Alfred nodded. "I'm afraid that there's no one on hand to clean it up. I don't suppose you could do it? I'll watch your shift while you're busy."

Walter wasn't catching on too quickly, so he simply nodded and put the silver down. "Yes, sir."

"Very good. Oh, and Walter?"

"Sir?"

"All the brooms and mops are broken. And the rags are all being washed. In fact, almost all of the cleaning supplies are unsuable for one reason or another."

Walter didn't frown, but it was a near thing. "What would you suggest, sir?"

"Personally," Alfred said, completely straight faced. "I'd suggest this." He produced a toothbrush from seemingly nowhere.

"Sir? I could just run out to All and Sundries for a few things. It would be more efficient."

Like that's going to happen.

"I'm afraid we don't have time," Alfred said. "The mess has to be dealt with immediately. It's one of those types of messes."

"I'm quite fast, sir. It would take me less time to go to All and Sundries and back than it would for me to do much with that."

However, he was reaching for the toothbrush. Just what had he done to merit this?

"Possibly," Alfred said. "But I'd rather not expose you to Mr. Blackadder. I'm quite certain he's still rather prejudiced against you."

Nadia was in what was possibly a disgustingly good mood and definitely looking forward to a disgustingly good lunch provided by her boyfriend.

She paused in the doorway when she saw said boyfriend talking to Alfred, however.

"Um, hi? You guys are open, right?"

"Oh yes," Alfred said, noticing Nadia. "Can we help you, Miss Santos?"

Walter took the toothbrush and leaned past Nadia to smile at her, looking slightly bemused, but smiling at her anyway. "Hello, Nadia."

Well, at least he was smiling. "I don't mean to interrupt anything. I just knew Walter was working the lunch shift so I thought I'd come in."

Why was he holding a toothbrush?

"Oh, I'm afraid Walter is just about to go take care of something in the kitchen, but I'd be happy to serve you," Alfred said, smiling.

Walter did not make a face behind Alfred's back. Even if he really, really wanted to.

Instead he held up the toothbrush in a salute to Nadia and shrugged at her. "I will see you later."

Nadia frowned. That wasn't part of the plan. And with a toothbrush?

"Maybe I could help?"

"That's very kind of you, but a customer helping with the work? Unthinkable. I wouldn't dream of having you do such a thing."

"Just enjoy your lunch," Walter said, heading for the kitchen. "I will see you when I am finished with work."

And the kitchen? What had happened in there?

Nadia frowned as she watched Walter walk away. "You could pay me for it, then I'd just be an employee, right?"

Alfred shook his head. "Wouldn't dream of it. We can handle ourselves at Cafe Fina. Anyway, you came in here for lunch."

"Well, yes. I did." Nadia stuck her hands in her pockets. It probably wouldn't be best to tell Alfred that she'd mostly come in to see Walter, especially not when, hey, that's actually about all she'd done, yesterday.

"Just a small one? I have a workshop this afternoon."

"Of course," Alfred said, guding her to a table. "And what can I get you this fine day?"

Well, at least without Walter about, she'd actually end up eating something. . . .

"A roast beef sandwhich? With a small salad and a coke?"

Alfred nodded, disappeared, and then reappeared with the food in question. "Here you are, Miss Santos. I put the dressing on the side."

"Thank you." Nadia smiled as she picked up her fork. "Though, if you don't mind my asking, why was Walter cleaning up with a toothbrush?"

"All the other cleaning supplies mysteriously ceased to work. I'm afraid it was either that or the poor boy use his hands."

Nadia had been lied to by a great many people in her life, though none with quite the same earnestness and dignity as Alfred.

"Uh huh," she said, dribbling dressing over her salad.

Well, at least it wasn't a ruler.

Alfred nodded. "Strange things are known to happen in Fandom. Is there anything else I can find for you?"

Nadia looked over her food and shook her head. "No, this looks very good. Thank you."

Wadsworth no doubt has a newfound appreciation for his employer, since he's not the one in trouble.

He's also ready to help you with all your dinner needs.
