Caritas, Monday Evening
Jarod walked into Caritas to the sounds of the zombie band doing a cover of The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated," and was relieved to hear the lack of saxophone. He was even more relieved to see Tino back behind the bar.
Once everything was set up for the evening, he pulled a colored envelope out of his pocket, opened it, and blinked at the contents. Jarod opened the store-bought birthday card, wondered briefly how Angelo had purchased it and why, and stared at the piece of paper inside--a photocopy of his birth certificate. Once the first rush of excitement died down, he realized that his first name was there, but his last name and the names of his parents had been blacked out. But he had a birthday. July 7, 1987. He would be nineteen in a little more than two weeks.
It wasn't perfect, but he had another piece of the puzzle. Jarod spent the rest of the night whistling.
