Tomorrow was Summer's birthday, but did you see Caritas all obnoxiously decked out with birthday paraphernalia and decorations? No. No you didn't. Because she was almost twenty-five, and clearly much more mature than that to make everything about her own birthday, Tino.

But she did make her Featured Cocktail about her birthday, thank you very much. Because that was a true marker of her growth and development as a well-rounded individual and adult: embracing the art of subtlety.

When Tino saw what Summer had put together for this week's specials, he'd expressed a disappointment that he hadn't known about it, because if he had he would have helped by decorating the bar with butterflies to go along with the theme.

"You mean, like, cardboard decorative ones, don't you, Tino?" Summer asked, and all of a sudden, Tino didn't seem to be able to hear her. "Don't you??? I swear to god, Tino, if you fill this bar up with actual butterflies, I am going to totally lose my shit, because I know for a fact you are not getting them through ethical means!"

Okay, she didn't know that for a fact, but Tino's continued silence on the matter spoke volumes.

She was beginning to think he was doing it on purpose.

Did Padme know that she needed to go to work at a bar? No. No, she did not. But she did need a drink as she figured out how best to address her current situation and that somehow ended up being said bar.

And then the bartender there had taken one look at her and her over the top outfit and disappeared for five minutes before returning in a matching outfit.

How long had Tino had that just waiting? Why had Tino had that waiting? These were questions to ponder and never learn the true answers to because, well, Tino.

When Summer came in, there was a happy birthday banner hanging over the stage and Tino greeted her with a blast of a noisemaker and put a pink sparkly birthday hat on her head. She promptoly removed it and gave him a withering look.

"Please don't tell me that it's allegedly your birthday again," she said. "You have, like, five of those a year at this point."

Luckily for her, Tino didn't tell her it was his birthday. It was his brother's birthday. Tomorrow.

Honestly, Summer would have preferred he claimed it was his birthday again instead.

"I don't believe you even have a brother," Summer declared.

But apparently he did! He just worked at a different bar in Canada, so Summer clearly wouldn't know him.

"Here, Tino!" Summer sang out brightly as she swept into the bar that evening for her shift. "Hold these limes!"

Before he knew it, Tino was struggling to keep within his arms all the loose limes that Summer had shoved into them, and he was about to ask how he was supposed to hold all of them before she cheerfully added, "But whatever you do, don't put them in the coconuts!"

Tino, confused, waited for further information, but come on, what did Summer look like? Someone who would actually explain things to him? She went about getting her shots set up and getting the bar ready, leaving him standing there with his limes.

Eventually, he'd end up setting them down on the counter, where some of them would roll away to random places here and there, to, you know, do his job, but he stood there just holding the limes for an unprecidented amount of time, really.

Summer had an idea for a theme with her cocktail and shots this morning and she was really hoping she didn't regret texting Tino to get him in on it. But when she showed up, he was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops (sorry, health department!) and a straw hat, with a little swash of sunscreen across his nose, and she wouldn't be even more delighted.

He claimed he never got her texts, and was actually just coming directly back from a pool party, but Summer wasn't believing that for a second. Either way, she had cleaned up after shenanigans and looked cutely like she herself was ready to host a pool party and one of the zombies had even brought out a steel drum specifically to appease her.

Once in a while, Kitty and Tino had experiment nights, where they tried to come up with different drinks. Today they were mixing things together, trying to figure out what exactly to do with pickle vodka.

Summer was, thankfully, not being exposed to Tino's recent Tinder match-ups, which she could only assume had to do with the fact that she would be far less polite or considerate about them, which then also meant that Summer was a little disappointed, because, man, she was really looking forward to digging into some of those matches.

So, instead, she was just going to criticize her own.

"Nature enthusiast? Yeah, okay, pretty sure that means just judging people for not rinsing out their recycling well enough. And you know all these dog enthusiasts have that and only that as their personality. And, seriously, though, why are there so many profile pics of guys just holding giant fish they presumably caught? Ohmygod, your profile pic is a fish pic, too, I bet, isn't it?"

It was worse.

It was denim-related.

"Goddammit! I should have known! Well, I will give you this, Tino. At least people know exactly what they're getting into."

Kitty was just trying to work. She just wanted a peaceful night. And yet here she was, with Tino shoving his phone at her to get her judgment on how to swipe on his Tinder matches. When, it should be noted, she didn't want to have to think about this and also he was way out of his league.

"None of these people live on island, right?" she checked. Because she'd feel like she'd either have to protect them or judge them, depending.

Summer had been sent something yesterday that made her absolutely squeal with delight once she realized what it was, and she was still riding that glee and anticipation by the time she came into the bar that evening. Which had the added bonus of having Tino being suspicious and skeptical about her good mood, for a change, which was really nice. It meant he was generally avoiding her, because he, like she so often did with him, figured if it was something making her so damn pleased, then it had to be something he was better off not even knowing about.

It didn't help that Summer noticed this behavior and started acting even more smug and mysteriously satisfied just to make him question and doubt and worry more. Because, really, at this point, he was just asking for it.

Summer had been warned, because Tino had texted her earlier that day trying to coordinate outfits, but that still did not prepare her for actually witnessing her coworker in all his fashionable glory sporting a full-on all denim suit.

"Thanks," she told him. "I hate it."

He was going to insist that she actually loved it and was just jealous and Summer had to decide if she wanted to humor him by sarcastically saying he was right just so he didn't bother her endlessly about it and just insisting that he was categorically wrong in this and nothing he could say or do would change her mind on this.

"Like, it's seriously making me want to burn every piece of denim I own as soon as I get home. Is that what you wanted? Is that your whole goal in all of this? Because it can't possibly be to be comfortable or to look good."

And don't even get her started with the denim beer cozies he was going to be putting on everyone's drinks tonight, too.

For better or for worse, Summer had definitely been working through some of her recent feelings through her jello shots this week. It was honestly the perfect kind of personal therapy. She got to do something to distract her, she got to do some research for ideas and challenge herself to make them happen, and then she got to post pictures of the results on her socials and get almost instant validation and praise. All that internet clout and fake likes improved her mood substantially, and she came into the bar wit ha singsong warning to Tino that if he did anything to rock the delicate balance of her current good mood, he would regret it.

That seemed to work well enough, and now Summer was trying to think of the best way to display some of her shots here in the bar because they looked amazing and needed to be admired, thank you.

Kitty was having one of those days where nothing was going right, where she'd spilled badly-needed coffee and the kid had an attitude and it was a special kind of annoying to snag your clothes on the doorknob while phasing through the physical door. That kind of day.

So Summer had turned back to herself from being a squirrel that morning, and thankfully, it had very conveniently happened while Stark was off doing radio, which meant that she was spared at least a little bit of awkwardness, of the kind that had nothing to do with the usual things that made this animal transformation bullshit so obnoxious. Honestly, in a way, she was kind of grateful for the timing, even if it had taken its sweet time making it happen the night of, but it gave Summer some time to think about things, actually.

Unfortunately, now that she was human again, she had to actually do something about those thoughts. It was enough to make her want to take a quick jump home and start poking through Rick's stuff to see if he had anything to make being a squirrel a little more perminant, tbh.

Anything to avoid having to confront what she'd been staring down the barrel of before she turned.

(Which was the root of the problem, though, wasn't it, Summer??)

Whatever. She was going to put it off as long as she could, all the same, and Stark doing radio while she change was perfect for that because she could just send him a quick text letting him know she was back, but, hey, it was Wednesday, she really needed to get her jello started! And that meant she could spend the rest of the day groaning and swearing and commisserating and probably drinking, let's be real, without the pressure of keeping anyone else's dumb, stupid feelings in mind.

(She did apologize to Pancakes, though, but also, like, how was Summer supposed to know that she was going to be in the path of whatever she was throwing at the time? Come on.)

Either way, she was herself, venting while making jello had....sort of helped, and she was now sulking behind the bar a little as she got ready for her shift, and trying to figure out just what she was going to do about things now that she no longer had the comfort of just being a squirrel as an excuse.

You know what growth was? Growth was coming into work, seeing that nothing weird was going on, Tino wasn't being too obnoxious, everything behind the bar was how it should be, and even all the zombies' limbs were staying firmly where they'd been last attached, and it didn't freak Summer out. She just sort of sighed in relief and basked in the normalcy, embracing it fully and enjoying it while it lasted.

Either that, or someone couldn't think of something more interesting for a post.

Apparently, Tino had a new cocktail he'd made from the vodkas that were available yesterday that he wanted Summer to try....without telling her anything about the vodkas that were available yesterday. She eyed it with extreme suspicion, looked at Tino, considered challenging him that she'd try her is he tried one of hers, remembered who she was talking to and quickly just decided to say no.

But she did promise to give him half her tips at the end of the night if he could convince anyone else to drink it.

She was definitely prepared to be very disappointed in some of you if you showed up tonight and actually let that happen.

She'd told him to go home but apparently it was too much effort to go upstairs when he could perish in silence here.

She made herself feel better, though, by just going and looking at her own and shaking her head, and not knowing what to think about the fact that it genuinely sounded awful to her now, but she'd still fuck that shit up if given half a chance. She always played around with the idea of changing it, updating it to something more sophisticated, but it was such a great little look into who she'd been at the time that she hoped she never changed it ever.

And she knew that Tino and Apu did hang out sometimes (allegedly), so some cross over was expected, but that didn't mean she had to like it.

So she was wary when she came in and saw that Tino had set things up for a Tug-of-War contest in the back room for International Tug-of-War Day, but when she saw what he'd actually done to set it up?

"Ohmygod," she said. "You made the pit filled with jello?"

Hold on a moment. Give her a second. Summer was suddenly feeling some emotions that she did not know how to handle, especially the fact that she was pretty sure two of them were flattered and touched.

Summer was in a very different place than she was last time the island was beset by this particularly sexy bout of whimsy, which mostly just meant that she was slightly annoyed and reluctant to head into the bar that day, but she figured it was good to get, you know, some fresh air and be a productive member of society or whatever. She did come prepared, though, repurposing one of her spray bottles that she usually used on Pancakes when she tried to eat plants and keeping it full of ice water to spray at people who were getting a little too...well...you know...

This was mostly to use on Tino, yes, and, at one point, she did have to threaten to upgrade the ice water to literal acid. So that was fun.

Look, pink was Summer's signature color, but, after dealing with an onslaught of Valentine's Day merchandise hitting the shelves at Turtle & Canary earlier this week (which had definitely happened, don't even), she couldn't help but wrinkle her nose a little bit at the decorations already bedecking Caritas, as well. Like, she wasn't surprised, she just felt a little overwhelmed.

That, plus her weekend discovering a new position of On-Call Ferret-Mech Kaiju-Fighter, had her actually wearing red today, instead, which was still definitely in the purview of Valentine's Day colors, but also it was sort of testing the waters to see if her GoTron color wasn't about to lead into a new hue era for her. After all, what was red but just a more experience and mature pink?

She was expecting at least a few comments from customers, but she really should have expected Tino making a big deal about how he 'might need to go see the eye doctor' because something was clearly wrong with his vision.

"Tino," Summer, finally irritated to the point of doing more than just rolling her eyes, "there is way more wrong with you than just your vision, dude."

She was instead just going to focus on ~~harrassing~~ encouraging people to sign up for 3MD next weekend.

Mainly just shiny metallic hearts hanging from the ceiling, which she could put up while standing halfway up in the air without a step stool, things like that.

She'd also had to threaten to phase through Tino's phone if he kept looking up Cupid costumes. She was saving you all.

As Summer was getting set up for the bar that evening, her phone started (ugh) ringing, and when she saw who it was, she was very tempted to ignore it, but she also knew that, if she ignored it, he'd just keep calling her back, or worse, insist on getting her attention some other way.

"What do you want, Rick?"

"....Gotron? No, I don't know remember anything about Gotrons, do I even want to know what Gotron---wait, never mind, of course I don't want to know."

But, of course, he was going to explain it to her anyway, and she sighed, rolling her eyes and shaking her head and trying to do the quick math in her head about whether it would be more annoying to go along with this or if it would be more annoying to try and not get involved.

"Yeah, okay, fine," she said. "I'll be there this weekend, but I swear to god, if I end up regretting this, I am not answering literally any of your phone calls until 2026."

She hung up the phone and made a disgusted sound and expression at it, then glowered at Tino because it made her feel slightly better, and tried to find some sort of less-annoyed mood about things before the bar opened.

Naturally, she was blaming Tino.

"What did you do to it?" she demanded, pouting/accusing. Poutcusing?

One second later, though, she realized, "No. Never mind. I probably don't even want to know!"

She was just going to take some cotton candy flavored vodka and pour a few out for the machine in which she didn't even get to use.

Yes, they had some at the store. Yes, she could just get a new one for the bar if she really wanted to, but that was not the point!

Summer had gotten to the bar early so that she could decorate, because while she might be all about the big, extravagant parties, Stark was not, not really, and so she was opting for something simple, straight forward, and already fit nicely into the fabric of her usual Wednesday workday and the fact that he would be coming to the bar anyway.

So the place was decked out nicely with a bunch of gold and blue balloons and streamers, and there was a "Happy Birthday, Stark!" banner over the karaoke stage, and the zombie were wearing gold and blue birthday hats (there were more available at the bar if anyone else wanted one), and Tino promised not to be too annoying.

Summer wasn't sure she believed him, but she supposed only time would tell, and she had too much stuff to set up, anyway.

Tino kept looking strangely at her until Kitty finally said, "If I have to have the earworm, everyone has to have the earworm."

Summer swept into Caritas that Wednesday evening with a smirk on her face, brightly setting to her usual prep tasks until her orbit brought her close to Tino's, at which point, she just leaned toward him slightly and that smirk gained a little more traction, and she simply had to ask:

"So! We're a week into the New Year, Tino! How's that whole Crossfit resolution going for you?"

Tino just gave her a withering look, refused to answer, and mostly just avoided Summer for the rest of the evening, while Summer's buoyant sort of confidence in herself seemed to carry her lightly throughout the whole evening.

Honestly, she couldn't ask for a better result, especially since 'irritated Tino more' was absolutely one of the things on her own resolutions list.

Look, sometimes, you just had to give yourself incredibly realistic and achievable goals to give yourself that encouraging sense of accomplishment.

For as much crap and vitriol that Summer gave to Tino, she did have to hand it to him: when it came to his job, he was actually pretty good at it, most of the time. She was half-worried about what kind of still lingering mess from last night's New Years Eve party might be in the bar, but the place was actually pretty clean and orderly when she got there. The only suggestion that there had even been a party last night was the ubiquitous glitter that would take at least a few days to fade away and disappear, but that was clearly nothing against Tino's efforts of cleaning but just the general nature of glitter.

She was so impressed that she was all ready to actually be pretty nice to him.

But then he started talking to her about his New Years Resolutions, which did (of course) involve CrossFit, and any good will she had resolved to have toward him this year quickly dissipated.

It was New Year's Eve, and Caritas was decked out for the holidays. The bar itself was decorated with silver fringe, there were gold, black and white balloons arranged in corners (so anyone trying to hide either couldn't, or they could really hide), silver and gold garland hung from the ceiling, and Tino had even dressed up. Meaning he was wearing a short sleeved t-shirt that looked like a tuxedo. It was the thought that counted.

The zombie band was playing the hits, the bass player dressed in a dashing red velvet jacket for some reason, and Kitty had had fun with the specials for the night.

Kitty stared at Tino when she saw that last one added. "There's a USB-powered menorah because fire and drunk people is a bad combination and you decided to do this?"

Anyway. There was also a very easily accessible fire extinguisher on top of the bar if needed. Don't let it be needed.

While showing the Yule Log on TV at the bar was much safer than that one time a few weeks back that Tino decided to do a makeshift fireplace just to burn the KFC Yule Log, Summer did have to admit that it just wasn't quite the same without that rich aroma of the unique blend of herbs and spices in the air. If anything, it did help cover up the overly Febreezed scent of the zombies!

She did think that they might have a real, actual fire from the cluster of TVs he'd put together to give the effect of a massive Yule Log bonfire, but he assured Summer that he had it all under control. She did not believe him one tiny bit, of course, but she did feel comfortably exempt from responsibility with that claim.

Kitty was spending today making sure the bar was nicely decorated for the holidays, including the tree back in the back room, and also getting the posters up to advertise the New Year's Eve party since next week was maybe the weirdest week of the year in terms of things like time and energy.

Tino meanwhile had probably managed to get a belighted rickshaw to wait outside in case anyone might need a colorful low tech Uber home, and Kitty was just going to let him have this accomplishment.

Summer pretty much knew what to expect today when she came into the bar. She had, after all, spent whatever time she wasn't using to make jello shots for tonight or do some online holiday shopping trying to prevent her cat for torturing the small balls of sugar rolling around and making disturbingly cute little sounds at her every chance they got.

It had been an ongoing battle, and she was sure she was going to return to a sentient-sugarball massacre in her apartment when she got home tonight, but, right now, she was just watching the balls rolling around the bar and having a grand old time, giggling and leaving trails of sugar everywhere.

"I hope you know," she stated, plainly and clearly, as she looked at Tino a moment before finally breaking out of her distraction to get to work, "that I'm not cleaning any of that up tonight."

She started cleaning a glass and then paused.

"Wait," she realized, "if they're going to just disappear tomorrow, does that mean the mess they leave behind will, too?"

That would make things so much easier, but she still kind of hoped that at least Tino still had to clean something up.

It was good for him! It built character!

It was a ponytail day for Kitty. WONDER WHY. It was also a cranky day for the same reason. It didn't help that Tino smelled like cologne trying to mask mulled wine, which was gross but at least it was proof that he showered.

When Summer came into the bar that afternoon to get ready for her shift, she frowned and started sniffing the air. Like, it would be one thing if the place smelled like pine or peppermint or cinnamon or whatever other Christmassy smells. Hell, even latkas, since those were everywhere today. But fried chicken?

Was she going crazy? Had a zombie caught on fire? Was she having a stroke? Or even worse...what have you done, Tino?

"Tino," she said, realizing that this was the most likely source of this mystery, "what have you done?"

Found a while bunch of KFC fire logs, apparently, and started burning them in a makeshift fireplace in the bar, that's what!

And the most upsetting part of all of this? Was that Summer didn't even know those existed until just now. Tragic!

It was a holiday week, and Tino apparently had decided he wasn't going to do any more work. Kitty would ask him to do something, even as little as passing over something from the other end of the bar, and he was practically sulking about it before getting back onto his phone.

It was going to be a long night. Maybe one where Kitty asked him to do a bunch of stuff just as payback for acting like a teenager.

[I'm not trying to work either. Open!]

When Summer came into the bar that evening, Tino asked her if she wanted to know his family's special recipe for stuffing, and she said no, but he told her anyway, and then she told him that now she was going to take that recipe and put it in jello, and so if anyone wondered why Tino was sulking at one end o the bar, it was because he had learned a very important lesson (which, let's be real, he should know by now with how long they'd been working together) in never telling Summer anything she doesn't want to know, because she will absolutely take that information and try to use it against you in any way she can.

And Summer was sulking because she really did mean it, she really didn't want to know, because you knew whatever was a traditional recipe in Tino's family had to be knowledge that no normal human should ever have to carry, which was why, on occasion, she just would occasionally find herself shouting out, "Really, Tino? Fucking raisins??" and looking at him like he was the ultimate scum of the Earth, because she was now convinced he very well may be.
