Someone had put in an order for an arrangement of birds of paradise last week, which Keyleth was expecting in today.

The small flock of brightly colored tropical birds that greeted her when she came in, chirping merrily and swarming around her while some of them flew up to perch in her circlet's antlers, was not what she was expecting.

"This is not --" She sighed. "You're very pretty, please don't get me wrong, but -- you're not what I --"

How was she going to put this without possibly hurting the birds' feelings?

She had no idea. Which was why she was attempting to call the supplier back with a bunch of birds on her head, and a couple of handfuls of goodberries spread out across the counter for them to eat.

Well. It wasn't the stupidest plan Steve had ever heard of (that one still went to "let's drop a bomb into a hurricane full of sharks!") but if Nina's oh-so-handwavy message about a ritual that involved hand holding and singing and showing that they all had peace and joy and whatever in their hearts, Steve was up for it.

He'd find someone to punch over it later.

So here he was, in the park with song lyrics printed out helpfully for folks who hadn't memorized the song last night, ready to use his very best Captain America is Disappointed in You face to get people to play along with this and hopefully get their people back.

Today felt like a good day to do some magical training, maybe try and get the hang of a couple of more advanced spells she hadn't quite mastered yet. And Keyleth had thought about working on a particular spell that, if you spent eight hours casting it, would be able to enrich all the plant growth within half a mile for an entire year. That seemed useful, right?

But then again, while she was surrounded by plants, that might not be the best idea. Sure, maybe if she'd been out in the preserve or somewhere that was not a shop that happened to be her place of employment, it would have been worthwhile to try, but in here? With a spell that was frankly a little bit beyond her abilities just yet? She wasn't going to risk it.

So instead, while a few of the flowers hummed a relaxing soft jazz soundtrack in the background, she was trying to summon animals: frogs or lizards or owls, nothing too complicated. It wasn't going too well; they might appear every now and then, but they'd just poof right back out of existence again.

At least the background music was keeping her morale up.

"Aw. Thanks, you guys," Keyleth told the flowers. "You're gonna get such a nice treat when I take a break."

Keyleth hadn't actually participated in any Halloween-related activities last night, because her social awkwardness was bad enough when she actually understood the cultural relevance of the holiday in question. A totally unfamiliar one? Nope. Nooooooope. She was pretty sure that would have just ended poorly.

Though she kind of wished she had, in retrospect.

The flowers were humming to her today, something soothing and calm with an autumnal feel to it. And, though the significance of this would be lost on Keyleth, it was definitively not Christmas music yet, just because all the leftover Halloween candy was going on clearance now.

She appreciated it, in any case.

There were adorable tiny black kittens everywhere. Every. Where. How was Keyleth supposed to concentrate under these circumstances?

Really, it was a good thing that working with plants didn't really require a whole lot of concentration or effort on her part, because she had to spend a decent amount of time making sure the cats clustered around her feet didn't get stepped on.

Maybe she shouldn't have spent an hour before her shift playing with them as a kitten? That could have waited until after work, probably. Anyway, she ended up druidcrafting them a bunch of catnip, so by a couple of hours into her work day Keyleth had small, drowsy kitten piles scattered around the shop.

. . . Okay, yeah, that was going to make it really hard to concentrate, because now they were just concentrated piles of sleepy and adorable. Oops.

Although it was definitely getting to be fall, the decent weather was still holding out, and the sun was shining brightly over the setup for the Homecoming Carnival. The Student Council had managed to clear the space for all the booths and games, but once everything was set up, there were still black cats all over the place.

Hopefully, they wouldn't get too close to the dunk tanks, or there would be some angry wet kitties running around.

A couple of porgs had followed Keyleth all the way to work today and she, for one, was absolutely not complaining.

"Just try not to get underfoot too much, okay?" she told them once she realized they were following her around the shop, too. "Because I know you're trying to be helpful and all, and I appreciate it, believe me, so getting stepped on is really going to impede your ability to help. And that would be terrible."

Keyleth had a cup of coffee in her hands when she came in today. She'd been steadily sipping at it since she bought it half an hour ago, and it was half gone by the time she arrived at work.

Where the flowers were singing again, this week, only they seemed to be doing bawdy old drinking songs in five-part harmony. At least, she would guess they were bawdy drinking songs; something about them just sounded like the kind of thing that would make her get kind of flaily and embarrassed.

The flowers weren't singing today.

There was music, though it was in the general vein of 80s synth pop (not that Keyleth would recognize it as such), and it seemed to be coming from the alot placidly napping just outside. But the flowers weren't singing.

Swaying in time with the beat, and occasionally rustling their petals a bit, on the other hand . . .

"Aw, are you guys doing some kind of interpretive dance?"

Don't mind Keyleth; she'd likely spend the rest of the day absolutely enraptured by this. Or at least until the alot of 80s music woke up and decided it had someplace else to be.

The flowers didn't say anything.

"Okay! Good," she said a little too brightly, and went back to making some minute adjustments to a few of the arrangements.

Was someone nervous about getting another new little sibling and projecting a little bit? Nah.

Keyleth was particularly glad to be back at a flower shop that was back to normal today -- even if that definition of 'normal' entailed a flower chorus singing soothing melodies at her in four-part harmony. Maybe especially then.

She threw herself entirely into tending to the plants, spending a few extra moments talking to each one in turn, fussing a little bit extra over any of them that had any wilting leaves or bruised stems, using a little bit of magic here and there to encourage their growth and coax a few recalcitrant buds into blooming.

And if she spent a little bit of time in cat form, playing a game of pounce-and-chase with Tickles, she was pretty sure Peter wouldn't mind too much. It was therapeutic.

"It's time to goo~ooo!" Karla's voice singsonged through the lowest hallway of the Toybox, where only the worst of the deviant toys were kept. As such, that was where everyone who'd gotten caught in the island's machinery had been taken, shoved way below ground where there was only flickering florescent lights in bare fixtures and no fresh air.

Hey, they'd be getting all the fresh air they needed on the long walk to the Junkyard. Their last walk anywhere.

Green army men gathered all the traitors up, shoving them into a rough line, jump ropes turning them into a chain gang together.

"Isn't it exciting?" Karla said, doing a little dance as they got lined up. "This time, instead of cutting out at the gate, the Toymaker has decreed the island will watch you get fed to the machines. After you lot, there won't ever be traitors again."

When it came to sneaking and infiltrating, seven was a decent-sized group. Small enough a group to make sure that they could get in and get out easily, but large enough they could probably take out anything they might run into by accident - and with enough diverse talents to handle any non-fighty challenges that came up, too. Or, at least, one hoped so.

Sometime after midnight, Liam led the team down into the machinery beneath the island, sneaking past several Army Trooper patrols to do so. There were a few heart-pounding minutes, but eventually the last of them slipped into the darkness, sealing the entrance behind them.

For anyone who had never been down here - especially anyone interested in machinery or computers - it was an amazing sight, even with most of the usual materials replaced by Lego blocks. It was like a second city but completely underground and made of machinery. Liam had the blueprints of the area from the last time it had malfunctioned, but translating two dimensional lines on paper to this 3D monstrosity might take a little effort. )

You know what, as a druid and therefore someone who worked closely with the forces of nature, Keyleth kind of felt personally attacked by having the sun chase her halfway to work this morning. And hey, turned out, wild shaping into one of those flying fish had actually turned out to be useful, because it had gotten her over the quicksand!

She probably wouldn't remember to do that while plummeting off a 1000-foot cliff someday, but eh. It had been useful today, and that was the important part, right?

It was probably not a surprise that the shop was full of fire flowers today, really. Also some large toothy flowers that kept popping up out of the random pipes, and while it stood to reason that grabbing one of the fire flowers and being able to throw fireballs at the bitey flowers might take care of any risk of getting chomped on, that just seemed . . . awkward and maybe inappropriate. Because flower shop.

The rift that had temporarily swallowed Keyleth on her way to work today had dumped her in some weird place that might have been a version of Fandom, where she was part of a team of six people who had to fight their way through another team of six people, up to a car with a battering ram on it, and then escort that battering ram the rest of the way up the hill to the inside of a castle. Her attempts to keep the rest of the team alive probably would have gone better if they hadn't insisted on running off in five different directions at once and constantly forgetting about the payload, and, well . . .

Suffice to say they hadn't succeeded at getting the battering ram into the castle.

Keyleth was trying not to think too hard about why they had been trying to escort a battering ram into a castle.

But now she was at work, only the inside of the flower shop seemed to be the ruins of some old building that was being reclaimed by nature and was overgrown with moss and vines and flowering plants, with some sections of the floor flooded out. Also, the only way she could really get around appeared to be by climbing along a series of ledges and handholds that were conveniently painted white, because suddenly she had some ridiculous finger strength? And had to stop every now and then to collect some shiny little ancient coin or bauble? Or solve some kind of puzzle involving statues that had to be facing the right way, or things that had to be accomplished within a twenty-second time frame, or other things of that nature? Actually tending to and selling flowers didn't appear to be any kind of priority today, that was for sure.

Really, this entire week was probably best not thought about too hard.

Keyleth had gotten caught out after dark a couple of times this week, and as much as she was pleased with herself for surviving the encounters she kept feeling like she'd only made it out of sheer luck. There was a spell that would let her create an area of daylight, she knew; it was a little bit beyond her yet, but she couldn't help wondering if it was the sort of thing that might help in a situation like this.

So that was what she was doing in between her usual duties and her rounds of checking up on the plants: clutching a handful of seeds and a piece of opalescent feldspar, trying to see if she could master that spell.

It wasn't going well at all, though.

The rainbow that had appeared for the parade seemed intent on sticking around for the picnic as well, and the weather seemed to be holding up nicely. The tables had been draped in tablecloths in the colours of various pride flags, and each one had a centerpiece that consisted of a vase with smaller moddable flags in it, free for the taking. Off to the side there was a ball pit, a giant inflatable rainbow slide (the kraken had been retired for the year on account of multiple instances of eldritch traumas), and other activities for people to enjoy. There were booths, there was food, and even the stage had made a reappearance this year, with a setup for karaoke if anybody was feeling daring, but plenty of room if anybody wanted to get up and play, too.

All-in-all? It was a lovely day with a brightly-coloured park open for everyone to come enjoy.

It was going to be hard to come up with Pride-themed flower arrangements today, Keyleth realized, if the island's current color (or lack thereof) scheme persisted throughout the weekend. She'd had plans for a few, and ideas on how to craft flowers in the various flag colors, but gauging her success at any of those attempts was probably impossible.

Not one to be deterred, though, she was writing down all her ideas anyway. Just in case. Also, she was wondering why she kept thinking she ought to go track down Beau and Fjord and . . . tell them to reconsider their life choices. Or see if they needed any healing spells. What kind of random impulse was that?

Anyway. Keeping the shop nice and neat wasn't a task made more difficult by the current monochromatic state, and she was able to keep herself occupied, and minimally frustrated, by doing just that while Tickles supervised her from the comfort of one of the top shelves.

Nice thing about something like a bush party, especially one in a spot where campfires had clearly been before, was that it didnt' take too much set-up to get it going. Technicaleh speakin', all you needed was a campfire, some beer, and some people.

Campfire? Check.

Cooperative weather (and island?)? That's a Texas-sized 10-4.

Beer? Oh, just about all the Puppers Wayne could get his hands on.

People?

Well, hopefully, that part would be taken care of in short order. But, as he said, Wayne'd also brought the food, so there was that, and a few extra folding lawn chairs if there weren't enough logs and whatnot for people to sit on. He was going to claim one of those chairs for himself, actually, opening it up with a single sharp move and setting it down, settling in with his beer.

And he'd be perfectly content with just that, too, though he supposed it'd be nice if putting Nina on invite duty worked and people actually showed up this time. It would help, at the very least, with all the fooood.

So no, Keyleth wasn't feeling any less mildly queasy today than she had felt yesterday. Or the day before. Feeling much worse, though? That was definitely happening, and it was a much more pervasive kind of sick feeling than the week they'd spent in a radioactive wasteland. Probably because of the fact that she could sense the entire island dying very rapidly, and because of the bone-deep horror that seemed to suffuse the entire blight. Between the plant life withering away to nothing and the animals getting twisted into awful monster creatures? Yeah.

So she looked a bit pale and unsteady by the time she made it in to work today -- there was no grey tint to her skin, and she hadn't sprouted wings or anything new and terrifying, though. It wasn't that she was infected, so much as it was that purely on account of her druidic training she was far more aware, in a conscious and informed way, of the infection than she would have liked to be.

She might have been tending to the plants in the shop with a bit of manic overprotectiveness today, but really, could you blame her? As much as her rational brain knew all of this was beyond her control, that Fandom itself kept hopping from one reality to another, she couldn't help feeling like she'd failed the island somehow.

Just. Damn it.

Keyleth was definitely ready for this week to be over. Even if the irradiated landscape hadn't been messing with her connection to nature magics, just the bleakness of everything was horribly upsetting.

The sorry state of the shop didn't make it any better, but she did her best to try and coax some life out of what few plants remained. She had to admit, though, the way some of them had mutated and adapted was actually really, really fascinating. So she'd probably be spending all her downtime today just kind of . . . nerding out about that.

It was better than getting all depressed about the island's current state of being, anyway.

Things seemed to be getting back to a Fandom degree of normal, but it had been a fairly tumultuous past few days and Keyleth had never been so glad to go to work and just spend some nice, quiet, simple time with the plants.

Today's main task appeared to be tending to a couple of potted lilacs that had been growing unevenly: doing a little bit of pruning in some areas, using her magic to gently nudge some blooms into full-grown flowers in others. Not the most complicated of tasks, but it did keep her nice and busy.

But she was back in Fandom now, and back to work which I totally haven't forgotten about the last couple of weeks really, and fascinated by the half dozen or so new plants she'd found on the counter this morning -- bioluminescent mushroom-tree bonsai, for lack of a better description.

"Oh, wow, you're so cool," she murmured, up close and examining one of them with a delighted expression on her face. "Where did you come from?"

The tiny mushroom trees didn't answer her. Neither did Tickles, who seemed to be just as fascinated but more inclined to give them a wider berth than Keyleth.

This year, Student Council had gone for the most empowering theme they could come up with. Be strong! Be glamorous! Be a Glamazon!

And they would have gotten away with it too, if not for that pesky pollen making for some last-minute revisions to the decorating. The glitter was a staple, the glitter was fine, and so there was plenty of that to go around. But the Greek statues that had been set up tastefully around the Community Center had all in one fell swoop started to seem decidedly less tasteful, and so in a fit of panic, Student Council had dressed each and every one of them up...

... in lingerie.

At least it was glittery lingerie? Though the end result did seem a little less Ancient Greece and a little more Rocky Horror than had previously been intended.

There didn't seem to be much of a holiday theme for anything going on at the shop this morning, Keyleth noticed when she came in . . . unless you counted the small planter on the counter that appeared to be full of celery ready for eating, or garnishes, or whatever else you could do with celery.

She was trying to work it into some floral arrangements, much to the consternation of Tickles, who kept circling around the vases and occasionally giving them the most perplexed look a little purring plant could give to anything or anyone.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, she wasn't particularly thrilled with any of her attempts either.

There were . . . a lot of four-leafed clovers in the shop today, it seemed like. A lot. Keyleth had no idea why, but since they were here, she was assuming there was some sort of theme going on.

Which was why they were arranged in a nice little display up front under the solemn supervision of Tickles, who was mostly just snoozing in front of them. Keyleth didn't mind; she just stopped to give him a few extra pats on her way back and forth through the shop.

This morning had started out with Keyleth fielding a call from an upset customer with a completely unreasonable request -- someone who wanted a last-minute change to a custom-made arrangement that included rare flowers from one very specific dimension. She'd stumbled most of the way through that conversation before she managed to get frustrated enough to really put her foot in it, blurting out something about how if the customer knew anything at all about flowers, she'd know what an impossible thing she was expecting of them.

So now she had a row of small potted blossoms arranged on the front counter and was trying to get them to bloom with a little help from magic, while Tickles prowled along the counter and occasionally got in her way. "I think that could've gone better, don't you?"

Tickles didn't answer. Neither did the plants. Oh well.

Well, tonight was the night Sweet Dee expected to throw her woefully unprepared students (and her honestly over-prepared self) on stage for some good old amatuer comedy! She probably should have given them a little more time, but the momentum from this idea had already been interrupted by a stupid trip to Iceland, she wasn't going to let it dwindle any further into the point where she likely forgot about or stopped caring. Even if maybe she could.

Look. It had taken three months to get to the point where she was taking kids to a bar (where they could actually drink anyway) instead of three weeks, and it was so they could perform and not to have them watch a really bad home-made sequel with some really questionable content (to her credit, though, she thought they were going to be screening Othello).

Anyway. It was the First Open Mic Comedy Night at Caritas! Come one, come all! It wasn't going to be a shitshow at all!

Keyleth was a little bit sorry to not be in Iceland any more, to tell the truth, although she was a little bit less sorry about it when she came in to work and had Tickles immediately attach to her ankle.

"Awww, I missed you too," she said, crouching down to scoop up the kittenwillow and give him a nice enthusiastic snuggle, most of which he spent trying to climb up to her shoulder. And what was Keyleth going to do, discourage that? Hardly, so she had a plant-cat-thing purring up a storm and kneading against the side of her neck while she tended to the rest of the shop plants. "Oooh, if you're going to do that, can you -- I slept a little funny so there's kind of a knot right th -- yeah, yeah, that's it, thank you! Who's a good Tickles? That's right, you are!"

Safe to say she was going to be in a pretty jovial mood for her shift today.

The rest of the flowers she'd received were in a vase -- well, a salvaged preserves jar from one of the dorm kitchens, but Keyleth had brought the potted miniature rose bush from Fenris into work with her today. Now that there was actually room on the countertops again, it got a nice prominent spot up near the register. She didn't actually have any opposition to cut flowers herself, but it had been a thoughtful and much appreciated gesture on his part, and she took a moment every now and then to help a few of the slower-to-bloom buds along.

"Hey, Tickles!" she greeted the kittenwillow,  who was trying to scramble up her leg; she scooped it up and let it ride around on her shoulder while she tended to the plants. "It's so weirdly quiet in here today, isn't it? I guess it's kind of nice to not have everything be all hectic, but it's a little bit sad too, I guess."

Tickles didn't seem to think so, but purred and tried to nestle in against the side of her neck as if trying to make her feel better about it anyway.

It might be worth noting that, had she actually delved deeper into the history of Valentine's Day, Keyleth might have been significantly less enthused about the holiday. But since what she did know consisted pretty much of the bits she'd gleaned in Magnus and Cara's class and also what she'd gotten some of the shop's callers to tell her, she was fairly into the whole idea. It was a holiday about showing the people you cared about that they were important to you, right? What wasn't to love?

She had a sheet of paper and a pen out and was scribbling down ideas for her own flower orders in between customers and phone calls; she also had a line of small flower pots, filled with different soil compositions, arranged on the counter as Tickles wound his way between them as if patrolling the area, and was using her magic to make flowers bloom in each one just to see what colors they'd turn out to be based on the components of each soil mixture.

It was turning out to be a very fun, very engrossing way to pass the time. And hey, maybe it would come in handy next week too!

[OOC: Shop and post open! My cellular data connection has been bad this week, so please bear with my extra daytime SP, sorry.]
