Something about the weather or the scent in the air or something had gotten Kathy really missing Chilly Boulder on the island today. It was the weirdest hankering, but it was a harmless one and one that Kathy couldn't see any reason to deny. So after classes let out for the day, ordered a portal and looked to The Best Boy Of Devil May Cry (sorry not sorry, boyfriends, it's true). "What do you say, boy?" she asked. "Wanna take a walk somewhere different for a change?"

Ronin, ever-responsible, grabbed his leash in his mouth and looked at his Service Dog, please don't pet signage. Kathy thought about it and shook her head. "Nah. Today's another good day."

There had been a lot of good days over the last few years, more good than bad. And while she made it a habit to have him wear it anyway around Limbo City to comply with no pet rules, she didn't think Fandom was gonna make a fuss about his presence either way.

"One Skywalker Special and a small cup of puppy peanut butter," she ordered, giving a smile up at the picture of her adopted siblings before paying and heading outside with her ice cream. "For you, sir," she says, setting down the peanut butter for Ronin. "Eat."

Magic word said, Ronin happily started on his ice cream while Kathy took a seat. She had no idea whether she'd know anybody on the island after so long away, so she sent out a handwavy text to everyone in her phone: Meet me at Chilly Boulder for old times' sake?

No idea if anyone would show up but who knew? And even if no one did, she'd had plenty of experience people-watching on the island that it would still be a good time. Maybe even meet new people!

The day was young and full of adventure.

While the booths were fun and all, this was where the gothic disco theme really shone. The decor was heavy on three things: 1) black, 2) spooky, 3) shiny. And while you might not think those things went together, allow Student Council to prove you wrong. There was even very minimal glitter so you know they're serious. (It was an impossibility to keep all glitter away from homecoming, it sort of just migrated there, sentiently.)

With the call from Alluka yesterday, there was no way Kathy was missing out on heading to the island to help tidy up. Poppy the giant metal chicken statue out front was getting polished and then bedecked. The outside of the building was getting power-washed (especially if she could convince Dante to come and help) and the landscape trimmed. And the inside was going to be so scrubbed down that even Barry could be convinced to eat off the furniture.

...Possibly.

Jaskier had a job! Another job. One that wasn't teaching or singing. It was all very novel and interesting if only for what the place sold.

But for now, he wasn't getting himself acclimated to the inventory, he was busy with this wonder called the internet. Mostly Spotify. This post is brought to you by Spotify.

"I should be allowed to skip more than this," Jaskier informed the website sullenly, leaving him stuck with a song he'd deemed not worth his time as he waited for the next bop to turn up on his playlist.

After a good day of lecture and discussion yesterday, Kathy was back in the brick-and-mortar Dite's today. The weather had her energized and now it was time for some spring cleaning - much needed considering how long the building had been shut up. The late spring air was nice enough that she had the door propped open, with retro pop spilling out of it. Right now Kathy was dancing with a mop to Elton John's I'm Still Standing, doing the choreography in the video as she made her way across the store, possibly with some Risky Business thrown in for good measure.

Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time...

"Ronin, to you for the solo!"

Ronin, chewing on his toy from the other week, just huffed at his owner like she was a weirdo and remained flopped down on his doggy bed.

"Your loss!" she declared, continuing her dance down one of the aisles.

Dite's was open, if not particularly sexy.

Most of Dite's business was online now, which suited Kathy and her schedule just fine. But there was still a brick and mortar store on the island and it didn't feel right to just leave it closed all the time, so Kathy still made the occasional trip out to the island to open it up, clean, and try to lure in the occasional in-person customer.

Of course, opening and cleaning didn't take terribly long when it had been awhile since she'd opened, and the whole 'luring someone in' wasn't really particularly active, so maybe an hour after she'd shown up, Kathy was behind the counter, working on her syllabus for the summer class she was teaching here. It felt a lot like senior year, before everything fell apart: in the store on the island, doing schoolwork to improve her application to college.

Hopefully her entrance to Yale would go more smoothly than Stanford.

Kathy had thought she was doing the smart thing by coming in to check on the store the day before Halloween. She and the island on Halloween did not mix.

It knew what it did.

But she had stock to check and accounts to balance before the end of the month. And so she figured she'd pop in for a few hours the day before, then not think about the island at all until November had safely arrived.

Instead, she'd gotten to the island and realized that, yeah, the island and Halloween still had it out for her. The first clown that had attacked her had gotten a good swipe in before Ronin had knocked it down with a growl and a nasty bite to the clown's hamstring. The rest, she'd left as orange smears and vanishing bodies as she made her way to Dite's.

The last one had gotten clubbed to death by a giant, double-headed dildo right in the doorway of her store. So she was going to put the inventory and accounting on hold until she finished sluicing off the glass door and front stoop.

Fucking island.

myownface: The rainbow Pride flag (Pride)
[personal profile] myownface
There was a tradition on Fandom Island, for Pride. The island herself upheld it every year thus far, making a beautiful rainbow arc across the sky for the whole of the weekend. This year was no different; a rainbow, in full colour, reached up and stretched itself clear across the sky, and as it did so, a brilliant blue crept across the sky with it, and then down, until the blue touched the tips of the trees and green started to spread out, as well.

By the time the rainbow had finished his arc across the sky, the entire island was in beautiful, vibrant colour again, just in time for the parade.

Like last year, the parade itself was to start on the Causeway, follow Griffin Lane to Galactica Drive, Serendipity Place, Godiva Street, back onto Serendipity until it turned into Loon, then Chimera. Then one final turn onto Apocalypse before ending up at the Park, where there would be a picnic shortly after!

The weather was great, the island was bright, and there was no small amount of Pride today! Time for a parade!

Oooookaaaaaaaay. This was not what Kathy had been expecting when she hopped out of the portal onto the island. She'd vaguely remembered dinosaurs from that weird weekend the reunion was supposed to have been, but this wasn't dinosaurs.

This looked like some creepy guy in a mask should be shouting about not getting addicted to water from way up high or something.

Dite's hadn't fared much better. It was mostly rusting metal plates making some kind of shack with weird, kinky bits of...armor?...on display? It all had a lot of straps and studs and leather and rubber anyway. And normally Kathy wouldn't judge that, but a) it all looked like it had been dragged down three miles of bad road and b) at least one of them came with severed hands that looked too withered to be anything but real. She was...just gonna avoid that one a lot.

The biggest surprise was the back room, which had been emptied of normal merchandise and filled with metal shelving that was absolutely covered in weird drugs. Jet. Psycho. Mentats. And a truly ridiculous amount of alcohol, some in old, sealed bottles, other just jars of straight up moonshine.

There was clearly only one thing to do. Kathy poked at the old timey jukebox now in a corner, flipping through songs until she found a good one.

Looks like today she was a purveyor of sex, drugs, and a little rock and roll.

Worried about Dante, last night Kathy had taken Ronin for a late-night walk around the island and ended up at Dite's trying to lose herself in the minutia of billing for a few hours. Her plan of 'work, then head back to Anders' was derailed by one giant puppy who still considered himself a lap dog crawling onto her while she'd been sitting on the couch in the back room. Waiting for him to fall asleep enough she could push him off her lap had resulted in Kathy falling asleep, warmed by Ronin's bulk and soothed by his even breathing.

She woke up the next morning - and twenty years later - alone. But that wasn't really anything new, was it? Not with Dante struck down fighting Urizen and Anders trapped in Thedas and and and...

Loss was nothing new, but damn was it depressing.

After a quick shower and change of clothing, Kathy spent a few minutes tidying the store. And then, unable to put it off any longer, she headed out towards the mixer.

It was the last day for the kids on the island, so Kathy was stubbornly refusing to think about that. What better way to put it out of her head for a few more minutes than by collecting the herd of kids that had shown up and heading over to the arcade for a few hours. There was bowling, pool, karaoke, video games, and - best of all - not a single vegetable in sight. Just pizzas, burgers, fries, and sodas as far as the eyes could see.

After a weekend of eating semi-healthily (albeit with much complaining), Kathy figured they deserved a treat.

Rather than the hassle of giving the kids money, Kathy'd just made a deal with the manager. The next few hours were free for every kid who walked in and she'd settle up at the end.

"Okay, so here's $20 worth of tokens for each of you," she said, handing small stacks of coins to each kid. "If you run out and need more, just come over to this counter and ask politely for some more. And don't forget to take turns if you see there are other kids waiting to play whatever game you're playing. And make sure to eat lunch. And--"

Carys tugged on her hand. "It's okay, Mommy," she said. "We know how to be good."

"Right," Kathy said, smiling down at her. And then at the rest of the kids waiting for her to finish her list of rules and reminders. They were all old enough to know how to behave. Time to loosen up a little.

"Go have fun," she finished, swallowing back the rest of what she'd been planning to say. "Go on, all of you, go have fun."

You know what was awful? Working at Dite's during this week. There was nowhere safe to look. Her whole store was full of things meant to delight and titillate on a good day. Which today was not, thank you. She wasn't sure if it was better or worst to have an ethereal being in a meatsack body for a boyfriend this week. It meant Dante was immune to the effects of pollen, but it also meant that Dante was immune to the effects of pollen.

You know what? She was just going to collect a huge supply of safer sex supplies and put them into a tub outside of the store with a sign that said Free! Use them! and dwell on her complicated relationship with proms instead. Much better plan.

And then, just for fun, she hid a bunch of rainbow flags around the building in a mini-scavenger hunt to find a bunch gold-foiled condoms, dental dams, and various other small toys. Because why not make your own fun when you could? Find a flag, follow the clues, discover a pot of gold!

This seemed to be the place.

The girl gave the giant metal rooster statue a confused glance and then set about to trying out all her keys until she found one for the door. The phone she'd woken up to had popped up a calendar event called "Work at Dite's." She still didn't know the passcode to unlock it - wasn't even entirely sure it was her phone, but the lockscreen had a picture of a bunch of people at Korean barbeque and her face was in the middle, so...probably? Hopefully? Otherwise, maybe she'd meet whomever was supposed to be working at this place today and maybe they could give her more information about who she was, where she was, and what she was supposed to be doing.

The fourth key worked and the door clicked open. "C'mon, Ronin," she said, grateful that the dog's tags had his name on them (and an address, but in a city she'd never heard of and a state almost a thousand miles away from where she was now) and that he seemed well-behaved and content to follow her. "Say, what kind of store do you think Dite's Decadent Delights is, huh boy? Maybe fancy chocolates?"

She took three steps inside and discovered, that no. These delights were very much not a confectioner shop. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh," she said, eyes wide. "Ohhhhhhhhhhh. Um. Okay. We can do this. Um. Can't we?"

Here was hoping the cash register wasn't password protected, too.

She was nervous. Stupidly nervous. She was a freshman at twenty, hadn't ever gone to college before, was certain that everyone was going to be younger, smarter, and more prepared.

Classy girl Kathy was, she dressed the statue in workout gear - albeit the workout gear she stocked which wasn't meant for public gyms. Or real workouts.

It was the last week before Christmas (and just a few days before her birthday) and it felt like every part of her job was on fire. She needed to back up all of her Tumblrs with dirty stories on them before they got the axe, plus assure all her writers and artists on the Dite's site that, no, they weren't going to lose this place, too and eventually just invited them to port their old stuff over to her Dite's server and she'd figure it out from there.

Plus there were orders to ship and costumes to unpack and weird holiday-themed novelties to unpack, and several places wanted to know her top sellers of 2018 so there was all that data to compile...

Ronin managed to be a big, comforting presence by her side, his calm a nice contrast to her own running about. There was a playground in the park. Little Katherine Li hadn't really been to many parks; most of the parks in Koreatown were either contested territory between the Seventeens and the MS 13s, or firmly under the thumb of the Seventeens. There was a small playground in the lot outside their apartment building that was was allowed to play on during the daytime when her mommy and daddy were awake, but even there she had to come right inside if any big kids came over, especially if any of them were wearing green or had tattoos.

There didn't seem to be any big kids there, though. Not scary ones, anyway. And it was day time. So maybe she was allowed to play on this playground?

She was still gonna hide behind a tree and watch for a bit, just in case it turned out that this wasn't a playground she was supposed to play in. She didn't want to get in trouble.

Kathy was trying hard to ignore the ticking clock that heralded Sarah's return to the woods. She remembered this from her own stint two years ago; that inexorable magnetic pull that only got stronger as time went on. Thinking about that time hurt - especially with Dante's recent realizations - but not as much as realizing this might be the last time she ever got to see her sister's face again. So she kept stealing glances, trying to memorize every line and curve, to keep it fresh in her heart for as long as she could.

She was also taking lots of pictures. Lots and lots, because memory was only good for so much.

"Hurry up," she urged, like this was just a random Sunday, out trying to outbrat her little sister. "The ice cream's gonna melt at this rate."

"I was making sure you had enough Portraits Of A Young Girl Choosing Ice Cream on your phone," Sarah replied, rolling her eyes. "You suck at being sneaky."

"Only around sneaky people," Kathy said, handing over her credit card while her sister ordered a Ben Skywalker.

Only a few more hours left. But damn if the Li sisters weren't going to make the most of them.

So. Things in Eliot's personal life had gotten -- let's say "weird" -- since the whole "lured into the woods and forced to reckon with your past misdeeds" thing. Hardison was off getting some space (after getting a little bit of an attitude about Eliot doing exactly the same thing), leaving Eliot and Parker home to pretend none of it had even happened, and Eliot still hadn't managed to touch base with his damn kid, save for a few simple texts letting the other know when they were heading out of town.

So yeah. Eliot was just a little bit of a mess right now. And since hitting and breaking things was part of why he was a mess, he was dealing the only other way he knew how: by taking over the kitchen and cooking the hell out of some food.

Much to his staff's dismay.

"I need three more pounds of ground lamb and four more onions, stat!" he ordered. "And someone get that damned mynock back into the freezer!"

"Yes, chef!" The busboy yelled, running back and forth across the kitchen with a butterfly net. "On it, chef!" said the dishwasher, heading into the dry storage for the onions. "I'm not calling you 'chef'," said the cook. Then shrank back when Eliot shot him a glare. "But I'll get the lamb."

And he fled into the cooler.

Now there was a war and you had to choose factions and creepy murder!doctor had set up a clinic on the battle lines and--wait, there was an assassin now?! How was she supposed to concentrate on collecting cherry blossoms for the newest outfits when she had to pick a faction and learn about the new invasion plans for the looming war?

The weekend was still pretty present in Kathy's mind, certain parts playing on loop over and over in her brain. Sometimes they blended together, so Lady was shooting Eliot or Eliot was killing her father or Dante was throwing her off the tower. Sometimes she was the one holding the gun when it went off. Sometimes it was just all the different ways she'd been awful to the people she loves. Either way, it was fun times all around.

It would pass - it always passed, with time bringing closure or just new trauma - and until it did, Kathy knew the best thing to do was to keep her mind busy on other things. Today's distraction was learning a new song, trying to get it perfect. Sometimes she sang snatches of the lyrics, but they were pretty on the nose for what she was feeling. Instead, she mostly concentrated on getting her fingers to learn what to do, line by line.

Not even an adult entertainment and sexual health store was immune to some of Fandom's weirder effects. Kathy had come into work to discover the DVDs were in some kind of turf war with the novels. She tried to break it up several times, but as soon as her back was turned, one or the other would launch an attack, which mostly seemed to involve literally piling up on the other side.

Eventually, Kathy just gave up and went behind the counter to practice her guitar. She'd let the two sets of merchandise get it out of their systems and then clean up when they were done. Honestly, as far as weird went, she was getting off not-dirty pretty lightly and she knew it. Considering what was on her shelves, this could have been way more embarrassing.

Much like last year, yesterday's rainbow was still stretching across the sky, as bright as it ever was. The weather this afternoon was beautiful too, not too hot, not too cold. The island didn't even have to stretch to make that happen today.

In the park, there was a pretty impressive setup for a Pride picnic. The tables had been draped in tablecloths in the colours of various pride flags, and each one had a centerpiece that consisted of a vase with smaller moddable flags in it, free for the taking. Off to the side there was a ball pit, a giant inflatable kraken slide (Jono still wasn't actually sure where the slide had come from, but he was going to just roll with it), and other activities for people to enjoy. There were booths, there was the requisite food, and even the stage had made a reappearance this year, with a setup for karaoke if anybody was feeling daring, but plenty of room if anybody wanted to get up and play, too.

All-in-all? It was a lovely day with a brightly-coloured park open for everyone to come enjoy.

Thunderstorms on the mainland? Were there thunderstorms on the mainland? Because once again, the island had braced itself for a beautiful Pride weekend, and had gotten those thunderstorms out of the way early enough in the day that, when the sun came out to shine for the parade itself, it had also provided a beautiful rainbow, clear across the sky.

Regular meteorologial event with fortuitous timing, or Fandom being supportive? Who knew?

Like last year, the parade itself was to start on the Causeway, a good gathering point for Fandomites in the past, and a fairly central location on the island. From there it would follow Griffin Lane to Galactica Drive, Serendipity Place, Godiva Street, back onto Serendipity and following it until it turned into Loon and Loon turned into Chimera. Then one final turn onto Apocalypse before ending up at the Park, where people were welcome to sit and mingle to their hearts' content.

But he woke up that morning realizing he hadn't actually gone out into Fandom itself for quite a while. And he had a hankering for sugar. So there he was, at some time closer to noon - he wasn't crazy enough to just roll out of bed in the morning - flirting with the barista over the strawberry cream drink he'd just ordered.

Out of respect for the shier students, Kathy had made a pyramid of books right on the counter, so they could be seen from the doorway and no one actually had to look around and see more than they might be comfortable with. A beeline, back and forth, where they could grab a book, run back outside, climb on Poppy, the eight foot tall metal rooster next to the door, and read their chosen passage aloud. She'd even left a basket there for the books, so no one had to make the trip twice--and a 'Free, Take One!' bucket of lollipops next to it, in case someone wanted a quick rush of sugar while running around.

Okay, the lollipops were shaped like boobs (and had condoms and dental dams taped to them, because safer sex was a thing, okay?) but this was an adult store. Kathy only had so much to work with and she wasn't going to run out to Wonka's for candy when she had some perfectly good--if inappropriately shaped--candy right in her own store.

Another Sunday, another trip to Fandom. Sparkle was actually sort of impressed with Portalocity's service today. After all, he'd only had one stopover along the way, and it had only sort of left him tinted kind of purple.

Which was fine. He liked purple. Whatever. He'd swing by the apartment during his lunch break and try to shower it off before coming back for the rest of his shift. There was no shame in that.

Settling behind the counter, he pulled out the Uno deck that Kathy had given him for his birthday, and hummed thoughtfully has he started rifling through the cards.

Yeah, this could be fun, sometime. It could get really stupid, sure, but it could get fun.

Did gremlin venom cause hangovers? Because Kathy felt like she had a hangover. Or maybe it was an embarrassment hangover, caused by all the blood rushing to her face and staying there.

A Southern belle. She'd been some kind of antebellum Southern belle. That had been--something else. The next time one of these summer camp things involved gremlins, she was noping out of the activity entirely, just watch her.

At least today she had a task that would keep her busy and not thinking about asking the new Korean doctor about the 'mystical far East.' They'd gotten a new selection of books in and Kathy was going planning on giving the book shelves a whole reorg. She'd shelve by genre, then by pairing, then by potential kink. Or should it be by kink then potential pairing? Eh, she'd figure it out, right after she gave all of Chuck Tingle's books a prominent place on the endcap display.

What a wonderful day for a barbeque! Walking around the grounds of Twelve Oaks, Scarlett could just smell the fragrant woodchips burning to infuse the meat that that wonderful Carolina smoky flavor. It was very warm, but she had her parasol (to protect her delicate complexion) and her big straw hat (to keep her from squinting and also because it was so fetching! It would make all the other girls green with envy!) and so she didn't mind taking a turn about the yard. Besides, there were all those handsome swains nearby, jostling each other for a chance to act as her escort!

Yes, a bit of a walk and then she'd settle onto a nice shady spot somewhere, while people plied her with food and drink and genteel conversation to while the day away.

"Ah do declare!" she...well, declared in a thick Southern drawl. "Ain't it just a lovely day, my deah?"

Anyone looking over and seeing Kathy draped in several layers of macrame was clearly mistaken.

Well, it was nice to see that her store hadn't gotten trashed this invasion. Nothing had crashed through the windows or slammed into the building. That was good. She'd budgeted a lot of today to cleaning up after whatever messes and to find out that she didn't need to was actually pretty great.

So instead, she decided to spent the time doing something a bit whimsical instead and started cleaning and redressing the giant rooster statue outside. Poppy was the icon for the store's various social media accounts and could stand being updated every so often. Maybe skip over springtime and go directly to summer? That seemed like what the weather was trying for anyway.

And if she were singing a song about the first of May that was a little dirty, well, that was only appropriate, right?

Eliot and his partners had been out of town for the better part of the last week, and Eliot's phone had suffered a . . . mishap . . . on a ferris wheel not long into that time, so he hadn't gotten a chance to check up on his messages and the news of the island until this morning, after he finished making sure his employees hadn't burned his diner down in his absence.

"She went what?!"

Which at least meant that the only things he ended up breaking when he found out was stuff he already owned.

The diner really didn't need that much Williams-Sonoma brand crockery anyway.

Today's specials
Spicy smashed avocado asparagus with dill havarti grilled cheese
Fried green tomato bacon grilled cheese
Grilled mascarpone and roasted jalapeno pistachio pesto cheese
Ratatouille grilled cheese
Parmesan crusted fondue grilled cheese

It was a little cloudy out and a little cool, but still decent enough weather for a picnic. And so they'd set up an assembly line in the kitchen to make a bunch of sandwiches, packed backpacks full of books and cards and toys--except for Tristan, who grabbed Kathy's guitar to practice with, but only after complaining it wasn't electric--put on heavy sweaters because Kathy was convinced they would all catch pneumonia and die in 45 degree weather, and headed out to the park.

They settled on a big blanket not far from the playground, Kathy setting up while Aidan, Imogene, and Tristan played some kind of game that involved a lot of running around and yelling, which she didn't understand but was assured was absolutely crucial. They were all speedsters and bouncy and full of energy and Kathy hoped her other selves appreciated that they were getting it all out of their systems now, before they had to go home.

It did make for some interesting 'Things-I-Never-Thought-I'd-Say' moments.

"No, Tristan, don't jump from the swing that high, I don't care that you'll bounce!"

"Imogen, you are not allowed to try to fly Aidan like a kite. No, tying a string to him is not proper safety equipment!"

"Aidan, what did I just say about running across the surface of the duck pond? Nobody on the island will believe you're Korean Jesus."

"Tristan, what did I tell you about roasting marshmallows with your hands? Now you're all sticky!"

"I didn't do it!"

"Fine. Imogene, what did I tell you about roasting marshmallows with your brother's hands?"

"Technically nothing!"

Kathy pinched the bridge of her nose, just as there was a giant splash from the duck pond. She was going to need more handwipes. And towels. And alcohol.

This was Eliot's very favorite weird weekend the island did. Even if it did tend to try to break his brain.

"Audre, stop setting traps in the freezer."

"You tell me there are polar bears and tentacle monsters living in there and you want me not to hunt them?"

"That's what I'm saying, yes." Eliot sipped his coffee, looking over his purchasing paperwork. "And put the knife away!"

"My real father likes when I carry knives!"

"Yeah, but you're making the kitchen staff nervous!"

Today's specials
Omelette bar
Ice cream bar
And even a salad bar for those who'll eat their vegetables

Kathy really, really wanted to be home right now. Especially considering that the six hours she spent in Baltimore this evening weren't going to be the respite from pollen she'd thought it would be, considering how it clung to pretty much everything. In a fair world, she would be able to spend the day in bed with her guys (both of whom were unfairly sexy, but that was a level of unfairness she could live with) and then spend the evening...

Well, she'd be okay spending the evening there, too.

Instead, she was setting out bowls of free condoms and sample-sized bottles of lube and giving Dite's a thorough scrubbing from top to bottom. That was a poor choice of words, dammit. Anyway, it was either spend all that manic energy cleaning or something, or start giving in to her idea of stress-testing, well, damn near everything in the shop.

Anytime she found herself excessively fondling the packaging of one of the toys on the shelf, Kathy made herself go back and rescrub the floor. She was going to end this day exhausted, frustrated, and sweaty, but with the cleanest floors in town.

...And hating herself for realizing that if she'd just stayed home, she could have ended up being exhausted and sweaty but with much less frustration.

Eliot was the kind of guy who would -- and had -- climb a mountain in Alaska if a job required it. He wasn't going to let a little thing like a few feet of snow and a weekend without power keep him from opening his diner. Besides, Val could use the exercise. It was hard for a dog to feel satisfied with running forms in the basement dojo for a couple days, after all. And there was only so much flopping into snow drifts in the backyard that a girl could take.

So Eliot and Val were at Luke's today, even if every other member of the staff had called out because of the snow.

Honestly, it was kind of glorious. Eliot could tuck in and make whatever the hell he wanted without worrying about any antics. Not that he'd say that out loud. That'd just be asking the island to turn him into a wolverine while the stove was on, and get the whole place burned down.

Today's specials
Tonkotsu ramen
Vegan miso ramen
Kimchi ramen
Squid ink seafood ramen

Was Eliot overdoing it? Oh, most definitely. He was going to end up eating a whole lot of ramen by himself tonight. Did he care?

Not a bit.

Kathy had signed up for an intensive EMT training course in Baltimore that had started last week and it was kicking her ass. Six hours of classes every day, Monday through Friday, from six pm until midnight. And then this past weekend had been full of workshops and seminars which hadn't been mandatory or anything, but her instructor had promised they'd be useful and that the class should strongly consider going.

So of course Kathy had. Because of course.

Still, it had been a really long time since she'd been a student and she'd discovered that sitting still for six hours cramming information into her brain was a skill that could get rusty, just like anything else. She had a small headache, right between her eyes from concentration and she was just so tired. Get up early to run, open the shop during the day, then close down and head out to Baltimore. It almost felt like high school again, except she distinctly remembered having more free time back then. She felt like she hadn't seen her housemates in days--compounded by deciding to crash alone in her room over the weekend so she wouldn't bother the guys by getting up early and getting in late.

And today, the very Mondayest of Mondays, Kathy had gotten out the books to go over her accounts and had barely started checking the math before her vision blurred and she nodded off. At least she wasn't drooling on the books?

Talking to Eliot on Monday, Kathy had finally realized that she and Raven had been allowed to graduate in absentia and she wouldn't need to get her GED before starting college. Which meant that maybe she should start seriously thinking about going to college.

Hey, at least the very idea to committing to a semester or two of school didn't get in into panic mode anymore. She still had no idea what she wanted to study, but not!panicking was still a pretty good step.

At work, she had the Fall 2018 course catalogue open for Johns Hopkins University, idly going through and circling classes that snagged her interest, even a little bit. It was an eclectic collection of classes, ranging from an intensive Italian study to an intermediate gymnastics course--how long had it been since she'd picked up a ribbon for non-crimefighting purposes--to several courses in history, sociology, media studies, even a couple of science classes.

"Oh god, I really am the embodiment of the college kid who can't make up her mind."

As much fun as it had been to freak Anders and Dante with the wedding magazines, Kathy really had taken her task seriously. She'd been asked to make several baskets of toys and supplies for a bachelorette party as a potential product to sell online. Being the girl she was, Kathy had gone overboard, drawing plans up for a basket for a honeymoon and another basket for new parents looking to reignite their intimacy. And she made several versions of all three; she wanted baskets that appealed to couples of all genders and sexualities, not just the cis-het ones that were usually featured in the magazines.

She'd drawn up lists of items she'd thought to add to each basket. Now she was collecting them from the shelves, setting them them all up. She had baskets and decorations she'd bought from Hobby Lobby; her entire afternoon was going to be devoted to arts and crafts.

As one would expect from a sex toy shop, obviously.

There were a lot of people in the house today. Or, well, it felt like a lot. And even though she wanted them all there, had encouraged Dante to invite them so they'd have a full house for Christmas, it still felt like there were a lot of people in the house. And, well, Isabela and Ada were Dante and Anders' friends, not hers. They'd all been friendly, at least before she'd run off and gotten herself killed, but never really friends.

So before lunch, Kathy had snagged her guitar, murmured some excuse about checking on the shop, and fled to 'Dite's where she could at least pretend to be doing something useful. So she'd spent about an hour or so tidying things that didn't need tidying and checking inventory that didn't need checking, before giving in and pulling out her guitar to practice that instead. White Wine in the Sun had been written for a piano, but there were enough guitar covers out there that she'd been able to learn that instead.

"I really like Christmas
It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it
I am hardly religious
I'd rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu
To be honest...
"

She just needed to be able to get through the chorus around the lump in her throat. Hadn't happened yet, but that was what practice was for, right?

"I'll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun...
"

On this, the most commercially hallowed day of the year, when over-stressed consumers trampled over eachother to get at various discount goods and were even less likely to notice the press of people had emptied the pockets even before they made it to the cashier, Ezra had been ordered (by Lock, and then by Ava) to go to the one place in the country where he was the least likely to steal things: Fandom Island.

Sure, maybe it also had something to do with how he hadn't been back here or anywhere near the people here for who knows how many months it had been since that thing with Dante and his brother. But Ezra was ignoring that. Clearly his friends just wanted to keep his eager hands away from people's wallets, out of the pure goodness of their hearts.

Also, of course, he'd taken a long detour through the mainland, so his pockets were heavy with things that strictly speaking didn't belong to him.

Oops?

But here he was now, by the pond in the park, throwing bits of bread out to the flamingoes while smirking at them like the superior predator that he was. (He wasn't going to do anything to them, of course. But you couldn't separate the fox from the man.)
