Raiden had noticed the marshmallow storm, of course, but he'd been in enough of a hurry to see how things were at Over Easy that he'd been able to mostly ignore it on his way there. "Everything looks great, guys, I'm really proud of you for keeping it going without me or Gray. Well. Mostly me." Raiden could be realistic about some things. "What've we got going for specials? Are they Christmas-y enough? Remember where we are. And who my brother is...yeah, those'll do! Oh, and, uh...don't let me go outside for a while, okay? No, I'm sure catching them out of the air is fine but I will eat the ground marshmallows."

"We bought ham for Arden, right? I assume she is. I haven't asked her. Shit, I should ask her. Look, buy the ham anyway."

"What do you mean none of the grocery stores in Echo Bay have brussels sprouts?"

"No, we need both kinds of cranberry sauce. Because Daman and Galen will fight, is why. And yes, I do need all of that cheese, do you hear yourself talking? I always need all of that cheese."

Running Thanksgiving from the opposite coast was stressful, it turned out. Maybe next year he made his whole family come to him.

Today at Over Easy, people were chatting about their Thanksgiving plans, and eventually someone asked Raiden if he had plans yet, as if he somehow gave the impression that he hadn't had the menu planned out a month ago. He wasn't sure how to feel about that, if he was honest. Did they doubt him so?

Raiden was allowing the staff at Over Easy to decorate for Halloween. Within reason. He didn't want it to look like a haunted house in here, and if he didn't set guidelines fast Gray would go overboard on Wednesday.

"No, no fake cobwebs! They're terrible for small animals. Will no one think of the squirrels?"

Entrapping the squirrels might have been the idea, actually, but no one was going to admit it to Raiden.

Today at Pizza Planet, Raiden was greeted by staff who wanted to show him a TikTok.

"...no. Absolutely not. There are limits. Are they--I don't think they even heated it up, are they just gonna serve it cold? You know what, get out of my kitchen. Get out."

After having it pointed out to him that that would mean running the restaurant solo, Raiden decided they were allowed to stay if they never spoke of this abomination again.

It did inspire him, though. He could do this better.

Things were in a bit of a state at Over Easy, what with having to make sure they had options on hand for, oh, any random animal that might walk in the door with one of their humanoid patrons today, plus the staff all having their own animal companions to deal with. Raiden didn't know whose rhinoceros that was waiting outside the back door, and he was a little afraid to ask.

"Look, if the health department shows up just tell them to come back next week, all right? Well if something else is happening then we'll just deal with that next week--Effie! Effie, drop it!" His daemon gave him huge sad puppy eyes around several rashers of raw bacon. "It's better cooked!"

Efthumia spit the bacon out. "Oh, well, if you'll cook it for me..."

"Might as well." It wasn't like they could serve it to anyone else now.

Were you tired of glitter yet? Because the banner above the stage reading "WELCOME TO THREE MINUTE DATES" was covered in it. Which meant the stage was covered in a fine mist of them. Which meant there was probably some of the tables. And the bar. Not the drinks, though, they kept up with standards.

And a few minutes before 8:00, Kitty took to the stage.

"Welcome again to Three Minute Dates!" she greeted them. "If you haven't done this before, the tiles are simple. Every three minutes, we'll read off pairs of names. You sit down with them, get to know them for three minutes, and when the gong bongs, you'll move on to your next march. After five dates, if you want to talk to anyone more, hang around and chat for a while. Ready? You've got a couple minutes to sign up, then we're gonna get going."

When Raiden had decided to throw a Labor Day cookout at the beach, he'd had a couple of stumbling blocks. First, he'd envisioned it happening on Labor Day, which hadn't ended up working out, which had been, uh, probably for the best, it turned out. Second, he hadn't been able to spend the day before the party doing prep because of the reason the delay had turned out being a good idea, but he'd managed to get it all together in a flurry of activity today.

Third, he hadn't been able to decide between a fish fry or a seafood boil. So, in true Gluttony fashion, he'd decided to do both! Which meant he was manning both the fryer and the boil pot, a flower crown perched at a jaunty angle over his backwards baseball cap, plus there was plenty of other food for people who weren't feeling the fruits of the sea, and a whole table of dessert. You fancying coconut cake? Chocolate cake? Key lime pie? Banana pudding? Raiden's got you covered.

There was also a bonfire going, and downwind of the rest of the setup there was a fire pit, with a table with s'mores fixings and a handmade sign reading 'Marshmallow Containment Zone.' And, of course, there was plenty of beachy fun to be had, but mostly food. A lot of food.

Come on down to the beach, everyone! Stretch summer out one more day, and maybe eat a whole lot of shrimp in the bargain.

When Raiden arrived at Pizza Planet on Monday morning, the only person there before him was mixing up the dough and he went straight back to his office, so he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary at first. He didn't even notice that he smelled like pizza, because everything smelled like pizza.

It was only when he emerged from his paperwork haze, and his office, to discuss the specials with the rest of the staff that he noticed.

"Huh," he said after a moment, and then sniffed his arm. Yep. He sure did smell like pizza. "I...have to go. Away. I have to go away." Before he took a bite out of somebody. Possibly himself. Maybe if he got off the island?

"But what about the specials?" Tito called after him as he headed for the door.

"Do whatever you want!" Raiden called over his shoulder as he texted Gray and Arden to please let him know when it was safe to come back. Hopefully before tomorrow. He had a party to throw.

Well.

The island's weirdness had finally truly found its way to Over Easy, in the form of a delivery.

The staff had all gathered around to stare at it, in all its gelatinous, mayonnaise-y...glory?

"You don't have to eat it," one of them told Raiden. "You can just leave for the picnic."

"No," Raiden said, in case anyone had been wondering why Gluttony was a curse. "I'm gonna."

Arden hadn't made a terribly big deal about it, but today was her twentieth birthday. Kind of a shock that she'd only been on the island and out from Callista's thumb - mostly - for only two years now.

Originally, she'd planned to have her party in Midnight, but after everything with Illyana the other day, it felt...rude, almost. To throw a party so close to where she was grieving. Maybe she was just being overcautious and weird? But since she could throw the same kind of party she'd been thinking about in town as easily as she could Midnight, she was going to just be overcautious and weird.

So, welcome to the Holoscene! It was currently configured to look like a cabana on a tropical beach, though the interior of the cabana was a karaoke setup. Again, things she could have had elsewhere, but this ocean wouldn't be whispering Come away, come away... in anybody's ears, and this karaoke setup didn't involve zombies, both of which seemed a perfectly valid reason to use a holodeck program to recreate them, okay?

There was, of course, a whole smorgasbord of (real) food off to one side, with real proper barbecue, along with party platters from Sushi Station, Taste of Thai, and El Burrito Loco, as well as a bunch of pizzas from Pizza Planet and a whole Build Your Own Waffle station, courtesy of Over Easy and there specifically because Gray would never have forgiven her if she hadn't included it. There were floats and kayaks and jetskis out by the water, but no sunscreen because who needed it with a fake sun?

And Arden was just chilling in a beach chair for now, in a bikini, enjoying the view of a glittering ocean in front of her, waiting for people to show up.

Raiden had initially planned on throwing a Labor Day/informal last day of summer beach bonfire party, but ~~Gluttony probably shouldn't host a party on the day everyone has a flavor unless we want an awkward cannibalism incident~~ he had run into a few logistical difficulties.

No matter! He could pivot, and thus today he was putting up flyers around town, whistling Taylor Swift songs (off key) in celebration of her good news as he went:

There were extra peaches in the delivery today at Over Easy. Raiden wasn't complaining. Raiden was never gonna complain about fresh, in-season peaches. Besides, it wasn't an unmanageable amount or anything.

The zucchini, though...well, the zucchini was doing what zucchini in August did, but that wasn't the island being weird. That was his employees being desperate.

"Okay, listen up! You cannot get rid of your excess zucchini by sneaking it into the walk-in! I'm making a rule right now. What? Can you leave it in your coworkers' cars? Sure. That doesn't mess up our inventory."

"And all the deliveries came in okay? You got some rhubarb we didn't order but just one crate? You know what, I'll take it. Fine. Something weird finally happened.

The weirdness was rhubarb. Why not?

Out of all of their brothers, Raiden and Gray were the most reluctant warriors, so one might have thought that they would have slacked off on their training when left unsupervised on the opposite coast from the others. One would have been wrong. Gray and Raiden might not like their job, but they took it, and the deal with the archangels that necessitated it, very seriously. Their brothers' lives were on the line as well as their own, after all, to say nothing of the humans who needed protection from demons up to no good.

So, on this particular afternoon, one could follow the clang of steel on steel down to the beach and find a couple of Nephilim engaged in sword practice--shirtless, so they could have their wings out (you were welcome) for greater maneuverability.

"That was good," Raiden said as he hauled Gray out of the sand. "One more time."

Gray and Sloth both wanted desperately to suggest they just take a break now, but Gray shoved Sloth down, shook the sand out of his wings and hair, and agreed, "One more time." And then probably a few more after that.

Yes, Raiden knew broccoli wasn't a summer crop. He had lived most of his life before broccoli became available year round in the grocery store. But it was in the walk-in, so it was getting used.

Raiden spent part of his Saturday morning explaining to the staff why they wouldn't be featuring pastry on the specials board too often. "I don't want to step on the bakery's toes. They've got their thing and they do it well. Besides, I'm not great at pastry. No one on staff is that great at pastry." It was almost like there was a great-at-pastry-shaped hole in the NPC staff that might be filled at some point in the distant future when his player got off her ass and worked through his canon until he met his soulmate who was coincidentally great at pastry. Weird.

Well. It was all still jello, but...you know what she meant.

But you better believe that if this was her last shift for a while, that she was going to go out with an absolutely disgusting bang.

Koala sitting hadn't necessarily put a damper on Summer's work in trying to figure out what to do about her jello enterprise in Ravnica, but it did sort of make it slightly slower going than she would have liked. Since she was so distracted with all of that, though, she didn't have time to put a lot of thought into what to do for her shift at the bar tonight. Thankfully, a quick look through her pantry to do some inventory on what she had and what might need used up before she completely switched gears to another plane for a while, helped her get some inspiration.

Or, at the very least, find something that she had way too much of that she should probably use up soon.

Three guesses as to what type of booze in particular seemed to have been collecting a lot of dust among all the vodka, rum, and gin...

The park was set up with a large screen for the movie to project onto, the sound system was up and working, and there was plenty of room for people to spread out with blankets, chairs, picnic supplies, or whatever else they might have brought. Alcohol was fine as long as you kept in mind that this was a family-friendly event, in that younger kids would only probably really be interested in the cars and older kids might enjoy the actual movie.

Raiden was back at work today at Over Easy, but he was a smidgen distracted by trying to find out what constituted a balanced meal for a bird.

You know. Normal problems.

"I feel like we should provide options for when people turn into things, but there's so much variety. I don't know what to feed a plant!...You're right. Plant food."

Raiden had been made aware of a gremlin...situation in the supply closet.

Maybe more like a gremlin situationship in the process of breaking up, from what Tito could tell.

"Okay, just, uh...close the door and don't open it. And maybe turn the music up a notch or two."

He hoped the problem would stay in the supply closet. If gremlins tried to take their squabbling near his pizza he was going to get after them with a broom.

Okay, well, they had gotten through an entire week without the restaurant burning down, going broke, or being swept out to sea by the merciless arm of a kraken. And their laundry delivery had finally come in, meaning everyone had clean kitchen towels and uniforms to work with. Raiden was feeling pretty good about this.

"We have enough potatoes, right? And eggs? 'When will I stop asking?' I don't know, we're always going to need enough potatoes and eggs."

Not to worry, Raiden hadn't forgotten his first love in all the excitement of a new creative avenue--he meant, business. Totally a money-making business.

He assumed. Look, the financials were Castor's problem, and he hadn't burst into tears yet that Raiden had heard about, so everything was probably fine.

Hey, guess what, Fandom? There was a new restaurant in town!

No, not the Waffle House, although hopefully it would come around again soon. Raiden would never regret the competition.

This was Over Easy, a breakfast and brunch spot where Goodvalor's Little Bivoli used to be, open from 7-3 seven days a week and offering all your breakfast and brunch favorites (plus bottomless brunch cocktails on the weekends)! And today there was a giant OPEN NOW sign out front, plus balloons, while inside a jazz band had been hired to make their grand opening celebration a jazz brunch.

And Raiden was here, too, of course, giving last minute instructions and worrying, "Do we have enough eggs? I know how many eggs we have. I know it's a lot of eggs. But is it enough?"

For the first time, Over Easy was open, and a discreet sign in the window proclaimed Now Hiring!

The ballroom was all done up in appropriately red, white, and blue bunting. Because bunting felt very Steve if you asked Tony. And Tony was the one picking the decorations for this one. Sorry, Steve.

There were a few fireworks themed chandeliers set up in the center of the room to drive home the celebration as well. And a wide selection of foods that Steve liked most. So all the foods. It was all the foods, but straight-forward stuff (burger bar, taco bar, hot dog bar, ice cream sundae bar with a chocolate fountain (because who didn't want a chocolate fountain on their birthday?)), and not appetizer portions. And pie! Either because Steve liked pie or because Tony thought it was hilarious.

Or both.

And after all of that, there would be a birthday cake with a truly obnoxious number of candles and a 'fireworks' show that was visible from the ballroom windows if you didn't want to brave a trip to the roof. It was actually a drone show because Tony was Tony. And the noise would be something else if they did actual fireworks.

The final touches were being put on the property at 79 Godiva Street and the kitchen was being stocked, so there was nothing left to do now but announce it.

With fliers, as was traditional, which was why Raiden could be found around town on Wednesday morning putting those fliers up, and occasionally pausing to dither over whether he'd put them at an appropriate eye level for someone who wasn't approximately the size of a commercial fridge.

He should have brought Gray along to provide a more appropriate eye level gauge. Some of these might be too low. Some were definitely too high. But Raiden was out here doin' his best.

"Yeah, no, we're going to need a lot more eggs than that...no, a lot more eggs than that. And double the potato order." Raiden had gone out for brunch once and the place had been out of potatoes. Out of potatoes! At Sunday brunch! He was still not emotionally recovered from it, and that would never happen at his restaurant. Potatoes were too precious to run out of. "Listen, I gotta let you go, I've still got this place to run. Yeah. It's gonna be great!"

After he finished writing up the specials board for today, he needed to call the printer about fliers announcing the grand opening. Wow, who knew this was so much work when you weren't just stepping into an already running business? Crazy!

Sure, it was hot as hell out, but it wouldn't really be Pride if you didn't have to be constantly reminded to hydrate, would it? Besides, just like every year there was a rainbow high in the sky above the island, bold and vivid almost in an in-your-face kind of way.

Streamers in various Pride flag colors ran between trees and light fixtures all over the park, shiny rainbow confetti (easier to clean up than glitter!) was everywhere, and once again the bounce house and ballpit slide were at the center of all the activity.

Carnival games and rides, all of them queer-themed in some way, branched out from the bounce house area toward the karaoke stage where the ~~NPC~~ band made up of a bunch of wargamers from the Magpie Emporium was slated to play several sets at various points during the day (with Steph sitting in on drums for a little bit of each set). The barbecue grills in the picnic area were ready to use for anyone who wanted to make their own food, and the vendor tables and booths were set up nearby for the local businesses who'd be participating.

Things might be a little less organized this year, but in Steph's defense she didn't have as much help with the heavy lifting and last-minute details as usual since Vi was a tiny hyperactive kitty right now. Still. She'd done this enough by now to have A System, damn it.
