Tisarwat was feeling incredibly impatient, waiting not only for her scheduled portal back to the Radch, but also for Lucille to finish up putting a few of her affairs in order to join her. But who could really blame her? After far too long of waiting around, being idle, on this weird island on this backwater planet, Breq had finally given her the directive to return. Breq warned her that it might just be temporary, but it didn't matter. She was going home, and once there, she was hoping she could find a way to stay there and not get sent back again. Not any time soon, anyway.

So she'd actually gotten to the office well before her portal to leave, in the hopes that maybe the scheduled time was just a guideline and they might be able to figure out a way to get it going earlier, but, of course, they were telling her that the time was the time, there was no changing it, she would just have to wait, and hope nothing screwed it up in the meantime.

Aatr's tits, it was impossible to be patient in this scenario, but at least she had some tea to enjoy while she waited.

[[ I've been so, so, so lazy about this for a while now, but I'm finally getting around to OFFICIALLY sending Tisarwat off on space-hiatus with her canon-mates for the time being. open, of course, for all your tea-fascist or portalocity needs! ]]

The annoying vinyl hipster kept trying to switch it to literally anything else.

Tisarwat kept trying to just do her administrative work and enjoy her tea in peace.

No one was accomplishing their goals today.

It was probably a good thing that most of the carnival was set up on Friday night, so when people woke up as kids, everything else adjusted too. The weather was perfect for playing outside - not that a little rain would stop anyone - and it was time to have fun!

Tisarwat had definitely considered not even going into work that day; she'd been dealing with terrible headaches all week, and she just felt incredibly lethargic and apathetic about everything. But she figured she could at least try to get some work done, maybe help pull herself out of this funk she'd gotten herself into, although if she came in and the stereo started acting up, she was definitely calling it quits for the day.

Thankfully, though, the stereo cooperated, and was pumping out some nice, chill, soothing music, all the instruments were exactly as they were supposed to be, and even the lights seemed to have politely dimmed themselves to a level where she didn't feel they were burning into the back of her brain. It was honestly kind of nice? She didn't really trust it, of course, so she wasn't fully allowing herself to enjoy it and just fall into her cup of tea, but....she also didn't have the energy to be all that suspicious about it.

Tisarwat was hoping for just a nice, quiet, uneventful day at the music store that week, where she could finish her paperwork in peace with some nice tea and maybe explore around some new music a little bit to genuinely start being better about knowing more about Earth music.

Even thinking that this could be a possibility, of course, was her first mistake, although what she did come in to discover was at least nothing too demanding, it was just annoying and confusing and potentially a loss of business...not that anyone was beating down the door for a piano purchase lately.

But in the odd chance that someone did want to buy a piano today, they might have to wait, unless they were, in fact, in the market for something small and colorful and clearly meant for children, because that was all they had.

Halloween was rapidly becoming one of Tisarwat's least favorite Earth holidays, and while nothing would be quite as disturbing as what had happened when she and Lucille turned into actual vampires, this year was doing a fine job of making itself be the most annoying, and there were still several days to do until the day itself.

The other day, several cats tried eating her pet fish.

Yesterday, she woke up in a panic and a rush to do a proper blood ritual before realizing that her gloves and shirt were in fact covered in jam and not actual blood.

And today? Was the worst offense of all, because she figured she could at least enjoy the tea she had made for herself at work, only to discover it had oh so whimsically changed itself to a hot spiced cider instead.

So she just sighed, tried to convince herself that at least it was hot, and went about her work without even trying not to sulk about it.

Tisarwat wasn't even going to bother with the stereo today. It wasn't admitting defeat, however. It was merely biding her time, maybe luring it into a false sense of security, until she would pursue a more target attack at an unknown future date. For now, she would just ignore it. Maybe the cold shoulder would have some positive effect or at least have it realize that she wasn't going to be bothered by it anymore.

She was just going to make herself some tea, enjoy the silence of the store as she sipped at it, and then spend the rest of her time plucking at a guitar or (once she remembered that that needed to be done, too) taking care of some administrative work.

Simple. Quiet. Surprisingly effective, since she honestly expected the stereo to start blasting music over her playing, but it was being oddly cooperative...

....aaaand now she was paranoid. Great.

Tisarwat honestly couldn't tell you anything about any of the music that was playing in the store that day, because it was all in French. Granted, she couldn't really tell you much about the music that was playing in the store most days, regardless of language, and that was something she should really be working on more.

There was one exception today, though, and that was when the stereo would occasional switch over to absolutely blasting Canon D in Major. And of course the volume controls were not responding, so it looked like Tisarwat was going to have another day of testing out noise-canceling headphones.

To her credit, Tisarwat had tried to get some of the information she'd gotten from Charlie regarding her employment here into the computer that Thursday, but, in her continued frustration with the inadequacy of the technology in this dimension and on this planet, the computer was not cooperating, and so she just gave up, made herself some more tea, and almost went to just put on some nice, soothing classical music to just stew in annoyance to. But then she thought about the trouble the stereo had been given her lately, felt no desire to add insult to this injury, and just stewed in silence again, wondering if she should use next week's school break as an excuse to go bother Breq again and nag at her about letting her come back finally.

And as she stewed and looked around the store, she thought to herself that maybe she should decorate for Halloween or something, but she was really stuck in the stewing right now, so that sort of motivation would have to wait for another day.

Well....the stereo was doing the thing again, where it had one song in particular that it was playing significantly more than anything else, no matter what Tisarwat tried to do, so she was either feeling like she did not have enough tea on hand or she really should spend the day product-testing noise-cancelling headphones.

"Waking you up," Tisarwat eventually informed the stereo, after maybe the twentieth time it played the song, giving it a withering look over her mug of tea, "implies that you were ever sleeping to begin with, which you're clearly not, or else I'd have some peace and quiet and respite around here."

After which point, the stereo did in fact go silent, the quiet felt almost startling by comparison, and Tisarwat was left wondering if that should be something she should be worried about. Granted, of course, she was used to AI and knew that some of them did, in fact, develop personalities and agency, but that was back home. She wouldn't trust an AI from this planet as far as she could throw it...

There were few things as annoying to Tisarwat as when she came into work to discover that the chosen playlist from the stereo (she had given up long ago on thinking she had any sort of control on that kind of thing) fell into repeating a song throughout the day after only playing a few other songs in between.

Today's, however, was especially annoying, because it seemed to be asking a direct question with the song's main chorus.

And it was also annoying that, once she finally, vocally, shouted out, with frustration, "Yes, of course I remember, it was just yesterday!" did it stop.

But at least it did stop.

Tisarwat was used to things just sort of showing up at the store without her having ordered anything; it made her job easier, really, because half the time, she didn't really even know what she was doing, but it also made her wonder if her job here truly was obsolete and pointless.

Either way, there'd been some new releases that came in that day, and she was giving them a cursory glance to note anything of interest before either adding them to the shelves or setting them aside to maybe display and feature. This batch was pretty unremarkable for her, though, until one sort of caught her eye.

"The Furnado Frog Band Extravaganza?" she read, frowning a little as she flipped the CD over to read the back of it to confirm that, yes, this was a CD of music by a band of frogs, apparently, with such exciting hits as 'Hop to It', 'Your Lilypad or Mine?', and, of course, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'

She was curious enough to crack one open to read the liner notes, and, sure enough, yup, it was, indeed, that Furnado.

Now she felt almost compelled to play it in the store today.

It wasn't bad. Good beats, a little twangy, but the lead singer's voice was a little too croaking for her tastes.

You never know.

Signs were hung up in front of the bar, both obviously, and easy to miss for anyone who might wander in and get signed up without their knowledge. Above the bar was a banner (in glitter):

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES!
GOOD LUCK WBRURBODY

Your hostess wasn't gonna question it. And a few minutes before 8:00, she took the stage.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You talk to this person, get to know their likes, their loves, their dreams. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. Et cetera. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Have fun, and good luck..."

She trailed off, not going to attempt to pronounce the word on that sign.

The trip had proven to Tisarwat that the store was, apparently, quite capable of taking care of itself for the most part, so she certainly wasn't going to put in any more effort than necessary on her part to maintaining it. She did suspect that this might eventually come around to bite her in the ass, but, for now, after having some tea and sorting through some of the new releases and putting them out on the shelf, she settled in behind the counter to brush up on her guitar.

She wanted to say that the trip had also, clearly, made her a bit rusty, but, really, she was never really that good to begin with. The gloves really didn't help, either, but there was no way she was going to be playing without them, that was just absurd.

The fact that Tisarwat had disappeared on an extensive globetrotting holiday and returned to work without piles of paperwork or other administrative tasks awaiting her was just the ultimate proof to her that her position her at this store was completely superfluous and served absolutely no point. The store had obviously been just fine on its own without her; what was the point in her even being here?

But she sighed, because orders were orders, she guessed, even when those orders made no sense.

She figured there was at least one thing she could be at the forefront of, though, and, since her return coincided with a new semester, that meant there might be some new students looking to pick up some work, so she found a "HELP WANTED" sign and a "NOW HIRING" sign and popped both of them into the windows.

Although, really, considering that Rosa had been hired without Tisarwat's involvement at all was just reminding her that she wasn't even necessary for that, either, apparently....

Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

In an unexpected and altogether thoroughly handwaved turn of events, Tisarwat had finally gotten rid of Seivarden's cat. It was probably only a temporary departure; she wasn't as concerned about hurting Seivarden's feelings by foisting the duties onto someone else so much as she really didn't want to deal with her moping about it if she ever came back. But it had only been a few days, and, already, she could feel the weight of that responsibility lifting off her thin shoulders and she was really wondering why she hadn't done it earlier.

And with the cat gone, Lucille was in a much better mood, and with the cat gone, Tisarwat herself was feeling incredibly free and was half wondering if they should use that newfound lack of feline responsibility to their advantage with a little bit of a trip or something like that.

Which meant that, instead of getting any work done at all that day, Tisarwat was mostly browsing the internet for good potential locations.

Or, more specifically, where they might have exceptionally good tea....

Taking care of a roommate that was still quite a bit under the weather had its benefits. Namely, being blissfully unaware of any sort of meat seltzer endemic that seemed to have swept over the island.

It might have given a little more perspective, though, on exactly why the sound systems seemed insistent on playing Bologna Violenta today, as Tisarwat sipped at her (thankfully meat-free) tea and worked on some orders and whatever else little admin things needed doing at the computer.

There must have been some sort of a glitch or a mistake in one of Tisarwat's orders, because what was supposed to be a piano to replace one they'd sold to a customer in Baltimore the other week arrived that day, only it wasn't a piano at all. Well, it was piano-shaped, piano-inspired, but it was far less intruments and far more...

Couch.

Tisarwat thought about it for a little bit, considered the hassle that would be involved in sending it back and getting what she had really ordered, and then decided, well. Looks like Groovy Tunes had a piano couch now.

Honestly, though, with some of the redecorating that had gone on with Rosa's painting, it could be a good centerpiece for maybe a little lounging area for people to just sort of sit and talk music, listen to tunes and (hopefully if they were any sort of decent people) drink some tea.

It was definitely something worth considering. She might even start to do something about it today, too....after she'd finished her own tea, of course.

With her day starting out with that band class, it was no surprise that Tisarwat felt herself to be in a playing mood when she got around to opening the shop afterwards. She took care of a few important administrative tasks first, of course, and made herself some tea, leaning on the counter and just sort of spacing out for a while as she sipped at it, before finally settling in with a guitar to start plucking away and practicing a little more.

Part of her wondered, especially with the frequency at which she hit off notes that made her wince a little, why she was even bothering, but it was a fleeting moment, because she knew exactly why she was bothering, and it made her sigh and keep forging forward and just hoping for a customer to come in so that she'd have an excuse to just set it aside and stop.

Tisarwat wasn't exactly sure how a few porgs had managed to get into the store (she was mostly blaming the annoying vinyl hipster, of course), but it mostly seemed like more trouble to shoo them out than to just let them waddle around. So she mostly just let them do their thing while she sipped at her tea and watched them, wincing a little when one of them ran into a drum kit and knocked a cymbal over, and, while she was going to put that back up, they'd somehow gotten over to the turntables and were now having a blast just riding them around like a carousel.

And, again, she was left wondering if it was just easier to let them do their thing, but once one of them (intentionally or accidentally, who could even tell?) turned up the speed to a point where the porgs on the turntable went flying off like missiles around the store, she figured it was time to step in and get them out of there.

Which was about to be an adventure all its own.

Tisarwat certainly had not remembered ordering a giant box of otamatones, but what she had when she got into the shop that day was definitely a giant box of otamatones.

Giant box seemed like an understatement, too, and while it would probably be good to have a few in stock, having this many of them just seemed to be asking for trouble of an extremely annoying variety.

Which was why there was currently a sign up in the window:

There was a rainbow. An actual rainbow arcing up over the island: a Fandom Pride tradition, actually, as Steph found out from one of the NPC workers helping with setup. (Which she wouldn't argue about; that was pretty perfect, if you asked her.)

And the park? It was an explosion of color, with rainbow pennant banners strung up over the picnic table area (where the tablecloths were in all the different colors of the progress Pride flag) and various Pride flags put up pretty much everywhere.

On one side of the picnic area a very large rainbow bounce house/inflatable slide formed the centerpiece of the carnival area, and yes, one side of the slide did dump people out into a rainbow ballpit. A couple of smaller rides and some games were spread out surrounding the slide, as well as all the booths set up by local businesses and groups.

On the other side of the picnic area was the stage, set up for karaoke or any open mic adventures people might care to have; beside the stage was a portable and semi-automated DJ setup, which explained the source of the music playing from the speakers whenever the stage wasn't in use.

Sure, it was pretty humid out, but arguably it wouldn't be Pride if you didn't have to remember to use sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Tisarwat was at the counter today, going over expense reports and inventory lists for the store, sighing frequently into her tea as she reminded herself that, once upon a time, a nice boring desk job much like this had actually been something she had wanted for herself.

It was moments like this that made her feel weirdly grateful for her brain having been highjacked by the Lord of the Radch, but, at the same time, moments like this also made her wistful for having that kind of blissful ignorance again.

At least it wasn't all boring, though. There was at least a brief spot of intrigue and speculation that they not only had tiny miniature keyboards in stock, but that they had recently sold a few of them recently, although to whom and for what purpose, she had no idea.

If you asked him, Watts was absolutely accustomed to the outrageous prices of the 21st century by now. Absolutely. Never you mind the absolute outrage he felt upon entering the coffeehouse and seeing the menu board.

Though to be entirely fair it was not just the prices on the menu board that were an issue. It was that he had no idea what most of these drinks were.

So, yes, he'd be a while deciding what drink to get today as he made the increasingly less patient barista describe in detail practically every menu item.

Once she was finished with her usual administrative tasks around the store, it was time for more guitar work. Tisarwat liked to think she was making some good progress, and she thought she was actually getting some really nice, rich sound of her strumming for a while there until she realized that the rich sound she was getting was coming from a bass line that was picking up whenever she started in on a melody.

Experimentally, she tried to see if she could get the mysterious bassline isolated by stopping suddenly to see if it kept going, and, for the most part, it stopped almost immediately when she did. Except for once, when it seemed to just sort of find itself a groove and stuck with it for a while.

Leaving Tisarwat to wonder if it was much better to not even bother finding out where that bass line was even coming from.

The park was done up with streamers, strings of lights and all the tacky police and firefighter themed decor you could find at a Party City, so it was maybe not quite as badass as McGarrett had been intending, but he figured that the sections that had been cordoned off for each department to show off would make up for that.

Well. That and the mahi mahi and Longboard beers he'd brought in from Honolulu. He knew a guy.

He was behind one of the grills, shirtless (worrying about burns was for the fire department), bopping his head along to the beat of the zombie band who were thrilled to be playing out in the sunlight and well away and upwind from the food because Steve wasn't stupid. That no one had put sunscreen onto the zombie band would be a Tino problem for the rest of the week.

The kraken drill yesterday had definitely triggered something in the Anaander-shaped hole in Tisarwat's brain, and she was still dealing with the afteraffects and the headaches from it. So today was going to be a quiet day at the store, the stereo turned down low and thankfully cooperating with some nice, soft music that, once she had her tea in hand, too, was actually kind of soothing and nice.

She wished she could say the same about the percussion section, though, which occasionally seemed to have a problem with cymbals falling and crashing out of nowhere.

The Annoying Vinyl Hipster was mad and sulking at Tisarwat because she'd told him his taste in music was terrible, which wasn't even a truth day thing, she'd have told him that regardless and had told him about it before, but for some reason, he was being extra sensitive about it that day, apparently.

She wasn't too concerned about it, obviously, and decided that today was going to just be a good day to work on her guitar; she'd been neglecting it for piano work these last few weeks, and part of her wondered if the whole exercise was kind of futile, what did she need to know how to play guitar for? Stark had, finally, properly slept. He'd slept a lot and then woken up confused because in his sleep-deprived state he'd stared at the moon Friday night when it seemed to be speaking to him (hearing voices wasn't anything new, he heard voices more than he admitted to nearly anyone but they were usually just echoes in head) and told it, very seriously, that he wanted tea and he wanted to be held. And there had suddenly been a mug of tea and a small animal clinging to him. That wasn't what he'd had in mind, but the creature (it was a koala, because that's what happened when you were an Austr-alien, apparently) hadn't let go until Stark had finally fallen asleep a little while later. It was gone when he awoke. He wasn't sure how he felt about that.

Now Stark was hungry and a hungry Stark could often be found at the bakery. He hadn't exactly been concerned with regular meals the past week. He was seated at a table by the window with a cinnamon roll roughly the size of a child's head in front him and an iced tea. He'd had enough coffee this week to last for a little while. Or at least until tomorrow.

She was mostly going to find out which was more possible: that she actually might be able to fall asleep, or that she'd get a customer in today.

Tisarwat still couldn't believe this place had turned into a coffee shop over the weekend. It was almost insulting, really, and you'd better believe that she planned to drink more than enough tea that day to make up for it.

With Troy now gone and off to brighter, greendaleer pastures, she figured she settle nicely back into the Thursday shift as her day for doing all the usual administrative tasks that running a business around here called for, which were generally handwavey in nature but still clearly required. Considered trying to do maybe a hiring bout, but if there was no one interested at the moment, putting a sign in the window wasn't likely to garner much more responses. It's not like the business demanded a whole lot, anyway, and Rosa was probably at least more capable than Troy had been, anyway.

Oh, and don't mind the snake over by the pianos and keyboards. Figuring Lucille wasn't likely to get into too much, Tisarwat had brought her roommate-turned-serpent with her today, just to get her out of the apartment and mainly away from the cat. She really didn't feel she could trust either of them alone with each other in their current states, and she definitely didn't want to have to explain to Seivarden at some point in the future that Issa was gone because Lucille ate her while she was a snake, or something.

The sleek, more modern new fixtures and shelves around the store looked great, and Tisarwat supposed she couldn't complain too much that Troy had refused to take all the old ones down to the basement for storage despite the fact that they hadn't seen any sign or suggestion of the Headphones Monster since Halloween. It gave her something to do, at least, moving them all downstairs while trying to keep an eye out for any customers that might come in,, and the act of moving them also got her thinking about the fact that she and Breq used to live down there, and that the move to MHA had been an improvement, but she was also getting a key here very shortly to another place, with Ignis and Gladio pretty much moving out of the Covent Garden apartment, and with Seivarden gone for....who even knew how long.

It seemed kind of a waste, didn't it, to just have that apartment sit unused and empty? Especially considering the convenience it would mean for Lucille, being right above her shop? And a bit of a homecomming for Issa, now that they had the cat, too.

Maybe something to consider bringing up to her roommate sometime this week. In the meantime, there was space to clear and then realizing that Troy had completely rearranged all the CDs when he put them back on the new shelves and trying to figure out the rhyme and reason behind his organization of them was enough to practically give her a migraine.

Was it weird that someone who was too young to have listened to it when it came out even at her real age would feel super nostalgic listening to Third Eye Blind's self-titled debut album?

Probably. But Rosa didn't care. She was blasting the whole thing today at the store, as she scaled the guitar racks, the counter, everything she could find that could get her up high enough to paint the ceiling.

She was giving it a star scape. The night sky of Roswell, New Mexico, to be specific, because she knew it like the back of her own hand, having spent endless nights up on the roof of her family's cafe, listening to music and just trying to escape her own head into the cosmos.

Once that was laid out, she started adding details. UFOs, of course, and shooting stars. Ringed planets and man-made satellites. A tiny unicorn trailing glittery stardust, a cat in an astronaut helmet. And then, on a whim, she pulled out a blacklight sensitive marker and started writing the lyrics to "God of Wine" invisibly into the negative space.

Hopefully if her actual boss ever showed up, she'd appreciate the now very space-themed decor in her store. Rosa couldn't seem to get space out of her head these days.

Was it fairly early to be out and about today? Yes, it was. But that was the thing about having a really messed up sleep schedule. Time didn't mean the same as it did for 'normal' people usually. And so, with his morning already well underway by that point, Billy was settling in at The Perk. His monster mocha monstrosity was sitting on the table beside him, paper and pen beside him, as he scrolled through his phone and enjoyed some people watching through the window now and then.

Tisarwat realized that she probably had a bit too much to drink at the party last night when she realized that the volume on the store's sound system was already turned down to an incredibly low setting when she went to adjust it for being much too loud. She supposed it could be malfunctioning and playing the music much louder than it was set to, but she really didn't think that was the case in this scenario. So she was just going to stick to playing nice, quiet, soothing music today, even if, occasionally, she did get a song that lead to a surprisingly painful crescendo here and there.

So one point for Earth? Very good, strong alcohol. One point again? The painkillers here did nothing for Tisarwat's hangovers.

But at least she still had tea.

Apparently, Tisarwat had chosen the absolute best time to be sent back to Fandom, and the first week of her return was a rather pleasant blur of getting...reacquainted with her roommate and making up for some lost time. But even if the effects of the pollen still managed to linger just a little bit longer for her based on pure momentum alone, she did eventually have to pull herself back into the routine of the island and start taking Breq's directives to heart about making the most out of a less than desireable situation by being back here instead of out there.

And a good portion of that, obviously, was getting back in groove (hilarious, really) with the store that she was supposed to be running and had only ever really done a mild and middling job of. Apparently, in her absense, they'd managed to gain a new employee and a bit of a renovation with the mural on the wall, the theme of which she couldn't help but find mildly amusing, considering her circumstances.

But the mural definitely got her thinking about renovation and redecorating, and so most of her time at the shop that week had handwavily been going through some stuff, thinking of how it could be rearranged or how they could maybe change the look in here to make it a little more fresh, to give it sort of her own touch, and then it was a matter of figuring out how to make some of those renovations happen.

Or even if they could. Imagining and envisioning things were free, but actually doing it? Was not. And a music store on a small island on a backwater planet like this one was hardly bringing in the big bucks.

It had been incredibly difficult for Tisarwat to come into the shop that day. Last night, Lucille had turned back into herself after being a snake for more than a week, and...well...clearly, they had some lost time to make up for. So much so, in fact, that Tisarwat actually had no intention of actually coming in today...she was sure the place would survive...but then she received a call about an emergency and figured at the very least, she should check it out, or else she'd have a much bigger problem on her hands when she came in tomorrow instead...

...or just waited for the weekend...

Of course, when she got to the store, there was no sign of an emergency anywhere to be found, and now that she thought about it, she realized she had no idea who would have actually called her. It definitely wasn't Troy or the annoying vinyl hipster, and she frowned a little as she came to the somewhat unsettling idea that...maybe it had been the store itself.

Not that disturbing to a Radchaai, of course, who was used to considering ships and stations entitities in their own right, especially now that they were liberating them all to be free and sentient beings themselves, but...it was a little troubling if the store was like that and was only just now making it known.

Not to mention that it had absolutely the worst timing.

She would absolutely be leaving early if she could help it, too.

So, Lucille had turned into a snake at some point on Saturday; Tisarwat spent most of the day not even realizing it, assuming her roommate had just gone to work like any other given Saturday, and she went about her usual Saturday loafing around, making some tea, doing some reading, contemplating attempting to actually cook something and then just being lazy and ordering food from somewhere again. It was only until she'd started up on some piano practice and was having difficulty with a piece that she even realized a snake was even in the apartment, because eventually, she slithered up to the piano keys somehow and very promptly corrected Tisarwat on the notes she kept messing up.

At first, Tisarwat hadn't been sure what to make of this piano-playing snake, but something about it felt familiar enough that she started to have an idea, and, purposefully playing a few more wrong notes to see how they were primly corrected by the snake, she came to her conclusion.

It did seem like a fitting transformation for Lucille, she felt, and it was very easy to still spend time with her, as she made for an almost striking fashion accessory, wrapped around her for warmth as she went about her various tasks.

Which included Groovy Tunes, where Lucille would just wrap herself around the warmth of Tisarwat's tea flask if Tisarwat had anything to do that involved a lot of movement, but, other than that, they were mostly just chilling out and listening to that snake jazz that Summer had introduced her to that one time. She figured the snake part might win Lucille over, but she wasn't quite sure if jazz was something she'd be able to get into.

And she really wished Lucille could offer more of an opinion on it than a few flicks of her tongue right now.

Turning into a kid was always sort of a weird one for Tisarwat, because it was always just so...jarring to her, who sometimes forgot what she was like before everything that happened, and how that Tisarwat...didn't really exist anymore. She ceased to exist the moment Anaander Mianaai hijacked her brain, fused it with her entire self and being and thousands of years of memories, and created something entirely different. These days, Tisarwat didn't even know who that other Tisarwat had even really been.

So being reminded was...

Vapid. Shallow. Unambitious. She had to admit, the Tyrant had chosen well, if she was looking for just some empty, inconsequential shell to inhabit, because that was all that Tisarwat really was.

But that was still her.

Needless to say, the whole thing gave her a terrible headache, not to mention all the mixed feeling of feeling both grateful that her brain had been hijacked, and also furious over the implications, and while she was glad to have had all of Monday to recover, she still wasn't quite feeling great. Still, she was going to at least try to go to the shop and be productive and normal...as normal as could be when wrestling with the impossible duality of your existence and what it was all supposed to mean...if anything.

...that Tisarwat from before wouldn't have worried about any of this stuff...

...but was that a good thing or not?

Goose had woken up as a child this morning and so hadn’t gone for his normal early morning run and instead had decided to go and have as many cups of coffee as he could because his guardian wasn’t around and couldn’t say no to how much sugar and caffeine he could have.

This was going to end badly.

One of the baristas had been there the last time this happened and sighed but she kept giving him coffee. It was clearly going to be an adult Goose’s problem when he went back to normal.

Goose was currently on his fourth cup of coffee and was showing no signs of slowing down.

Things were pretty quiet in the store that day....things were usually pretty quiet in the store, and, really, around here, Tisarwat was going to count that as a very, very good thing. She only had a few managerial tasks to take care of and she got them out of the way swiftly, because she was kind of feeling compelled to spend the rest of her shift getting back to picking at a guitar to spill the space in between customers.

She hadn't been practicing as much as she probably should have, but it didn't take her long to get warmed up and to start experimenting around with some riffs. As far as instruments being played so intimately with one's hands, the guitar almost seemed a little more obscene than the piana, but there was still something about it that she enjoyed, so she kept at it.

Not that she ever expected guitar would be a skill that would ever actually be useful if she ever managed to get back to the Radch to stay, but who knew? A bizarre and quirky talent like that could make for an interesting stir back home, and, if anything, she was certain that Breq could only appreciate more musical knowledge among her crew.

And a guitar could definitely be loud enough to cover up some of her singing...

...what?

Troy's choice of costume for the homecoming dance had Tisarwat wondering if she should maybe actually take a venture into the basement to ensure that that tangled ball of headphone wires really wasn't turning into a monster, which would have been ridiculous, anyway, and besides, she used to live in that basement, it wasn't like it was some creepy dungeon or something, so she didn't know why she was filled with such trepidation and worry and wishing she had a better weapon than a microphone stand that she grabbed along the way as she flipped on the lights and went to go have a look.

And, sure enough, it was fine. Without anyone living there for so long, the place did start to give her faint 'undergarden of Athoek Station before we got there' vibes, making her wonder if she should actively try to rent the rooms out, but it was fine. In fact, she didn't even see the tangled ball of headphone wires down there.

....wait a minute...

Then where had it gone?!?

Considering the theme of the dance, it might have been a surprise to walk into the community center and find it looking relatively classy, but a ball was a ball, even if it was a ball for "monsters." There were candleabras and dark gauzey fabrics everywhere, trying to put off an "elegant evening in a castle" vibe. Even the glitter was understated!

There were extra masquerade masks in case anyone needed one, or wanted to switch things up during the night, and bags of candy for anyone who wanted to stop by, even if it was just to sneak a peek. Or get candy in general, there's no judgement here.

The party last weekend was excellent, and though she enjoyed herself considerably at the time, in the aftermath, it was just making Tisarwat a little homesick. And even more than that, it was making Tisarwat a little wistful for the life she could have had if all that business with her brain being hyjacked by the Lord of the Radch. Just her luck, right? Not that she didn't adore Breq and her Bos and the chance to be a part of something greater, obviously, but if none of that had ever happened, she would probably be enjoying a nice desk job back home and partying pretty much every night. Instead, she had a much different kind of desk job and was partying in the rare occasions that someone could be bothered to throw one.

Granted, she supposed she could throw one, but...most of the time, she couldnt' be bothered, either.

(It was almost as if all the time and effort she could have put into it was being channeled elsewhere instead. Weird).

But there was homecoming coming up, and so there was that, but with it being Halloween and what happened last year, Tisarwat figured they'd need to be careful what she and Lucille decided to do for their costumes. So she was trying to do research on Earth monsters on her phone, frowning deeply as she found herself falling down quite the strange rabbit hole.

The stereo was still on its spooky music bullshit, which she thought might have been inspiring, but it, apparently, was not.

Maybe it was just because she lived with someone like Lucille now, but when Tisarwat came into the shop to find that the stereo seemed stuck on playing a lot of dark, broody, atmospheric music today, she was kind of digging it. She didn't really understand a lot of the holidays on this planet, but it almost put her in a mood to decorate the store a little bit more like she'd seen other places doing, and it was just putting her into a great mood to just curl up with some tea and some of those old darkly romantic books that her roommate was so fond of.

Until, of course, those moments when the soft, atmospheric music cut out with either a loud, blood-curdling scream or a record scratch or shattered glass and went on like that for a few minutes before returning to the nicer stuff.

Tisarwat was going to go through a lot of tea today from when she kept spilling it as she jumped in startled fright, and she was absolutely avoiding handling anything more delicate after accidentally dropping and smashing a few records and CDs when it happened.

Glowering at the stereo afterwards didn't help any, but it did make her feel slightly better, especially when she felt it was doing it on purpose whenever she went to go have a sip or do some actual work around here.

Considering that the place didn't pull in much business normally, Tisarwat wasn't exactly expecting to be very busy today with almost everyone else off on the school trip. The quiet that settled over the island during these weeks was more than enough to drive her to wistfully dreaming about maybe planning some sort of trip for just Lucille and herself one of these days, to just disappear somewhere strange and different for a week or two and just explore somewhere different. It wasn't like travel was usually that difficult to pull off, from here, assuming Portalocity cooperated...

...but for now, for this week, there was a cat, and that cat was, she supposed predicatably, causing their fish a great deal of distress and trouble, so, if anything, Tisarwat was at the shop today just to get Issa out of the apartment for a little bit.

The cat seemed thoroughly unimpressed with the place, and seemed rather fond of expressing this distaste with a lot of swishing of her tail that sent things tumbling or a lot of prancing on piano keys and testing guitar strings with her claws, leaving Tisarwat to wonder, as she idly watched the attempted chaos from the counter with her tea, knowing full well that she'd just have to do it all over again if she went and took care of it now, if explaining to Issa what most of those strings were made of.

(Yes, she knew that the term 'catgut' was a bit of a misleading misnomer, but Issa surely wouldn't).

The heavy metal was back in the speakers, but, thankfully without a headache to go along with it this week, Tisarwat was finding that she....was actually starting to not mind it as much. It all felt wholly unsophistical and improper, and unnecesarily loud, but there was still something about it that almost seemed to tap into something more primal. If anything, she was actually finding it a pretty good exercise for her guitar work, to try and keep up with the music as she played along, made all the more challenging since of course she was playing with gloves.

She'd have to look into what kind of gloves might be best for guitar-playing, these ones were not working too terribly well, and it wasn't like Tisarwat was going to complain about an opportunity to splurge on some new gloves.

And she also supposed she could be doing actual work, but the store seemed to be running just fine on the absolute minimum effort already, and, besides, who could concentrate on something like work with all this heavy rock music going on? Certainly not Tisarwat! So this was a way to still be productive.
