Don't ask why Tino was willing to get Kenzi 150 pounds of shrimp. It was either bribery, blackmail, or sheer bludgeoning personality. Whyever he did it, he did it without asking questions.

Which was why Kenzi was at the beach at dawn, with a rented rickshaw full of fish.

"Heeeeere, squiddy, squiddy, squid. Heeeere giant huge pretty fishy. I have something for youuuuuuuu!" She paused. "Sunshine, I summon thee! Yo, giant squid! I have a business offer!"

...if it didn't work, they could always be barbecued later, right?

Interrupting Squid: Bloop, bloopidy bloop...

Announcer: Sorry. Can this lifelong undersea, high school swimming pool and duck pond dweller convince an entire bar and dance club full of people that she's really a hot, leather-clad bartender with a great rack and the ability to suck out your soul through your [BLEEP]?

Squid, with a bottle of beer in one tentacle and a pint glass in another, while a third slithers around the tree-trunk sized arm of the man across the counter: Bloop bloopdy bloop bloop...

Subtitles: Hey, handsome. Rough day? Tell me all about it.

Tiny: ...

Announcer: ...So that's a no, then. CUT!

Squid: Bloop.

Subtitles: [Bleep.]

"Splish, splash, I was takin' a baaaa-ath--" sang the 5,000th krill, because that was the only effing song they knew, and Sunshine rolled her giant yellow eye, then devoured it and 4,999 of its brethren, following that up with a sad little belch. (Well, little for a giant squid, which meant that the bubbly tsunami briefly covered the empty causeway in saltwater and swallowed half of Fandom's beachfront, but died away before it could do any real damage.)

It was one of Those Days. When the melancholy just boiled up from the deeps like a kraken released on the princess of her soul, and even the disposition that usually matched Sunshine's cheerful name couldn't withstand the truth: Fandom didn't love her like she loved Fandom.

( And then came the violins. )
