Raven prowled through the streets of Fandom, keeping a wary eye out for any villagers foolish enough to be out by themselves (herself excluded, of course) or those who had gone hollow. She was also looking for any of these new visitors to the island she'd both sensed and heard about. Some of them felt...familiar in a way, though she couldn't really explain how -- due either to her empathy being turned down by choice or tiny fragments of her memory drifting away. If they were friend, she'd direct them to the village and safety. If they were not, well, she'd deal with that, too.

She didn't want to get her hopes up that it was help. Hope had long since evaporated, the last traces of it gone after she'd lost Karla. Now it was just protection and survival.

Death belonged to the graveyard now, and the graveyard belonged to her.

She reshaped it to her whims -- turning the grass red on a whim before replacing it with thistles an hour later. Growing tall, fragrant trees that attracted strange birds, then crushing those same birds midsong with greedy hands. Sometimes, she raised the corpses and made them dance until their bones fell apart, or (if she was lucky) drew in somebody even more fun to play with.

On most days, this was the only life she could imagine.

On her best days, she knew this hadn't always been her. That before the island's plague began to twist her, she'd been much more than this. There'd been duty and siblings and friends and a sense that things made sense.

Today wasn't one of her best days. Today was a day for singing a song no one on earth had heard for centuries, and thinking wistfully of the dirty-copper flavor and sticky slickness of blood.

Didi had been off-island for a few days, accompanying Delirium on one of her adventures.

It had gone well. Or about as well as anything did when Del was involved. (Didi could have done without the half-day they'd spent sifting through a marsh bare-handed to find a trinket Del had dropped, which she insisted was the last relic of a long-forgotten invertebrate civilization that had once thrived on a planet far away.) Anyhow, she was back now, with only a few chicken feathers dotting her wavy cloud of hair to show anything had happened at all. It was a relief to go back to dusting the bottles.

Didi hadn't had much to do that morning, so she got to the coffee shop a little early for her plans with Kanan. As far as she was concerned, that was perfect -- it gave her plenty of time to settle in, to sip slowly at a cup of Earl Gray and daydream while she people-watched.

It had been a while since she made a point of spending time with anyone new. It was nice to have it to look forward to.

Caritas Presents:
3 MINUTE DATES

Unlike most 3MDs, there didn't seem to be a host. The zombies were just set up, all quiet, when the lights went out.

After a few moments, music started to play. A man's voice started to sing "Ooooooooh" while backing vocals repeated "come on."

The first chorus played before a voice that might have been familiar to longtime residents came up and completely failed to introduce himself. "Welcome to Three Minute Dates. I gave this CD to Tino years ago, just in case this thing I started turned a sexy, legal to drink in the rest of the country 21. In honor of that, have an open bar, courtesy of me, to make sure my name is never forgotten. When somebody reads your names or whatever happens, pair up, get drunk, and let those beer goggles take over for three minutes until this sound plays."

The song cued back up, singing, "You're hopelessly HOPELEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!" It was, perhaps, a mixed message.

"Have fun. And try not to bang too many people at once, like I'm definitely doing right now."

Finally the lights came back on. Jessica turned to Tino at the bar, taking a free drink, and asked, "Who was that?" Tino just shrugged. He clearly knew, but he was admitting to nothing.

There were the beginnings of a chill in the air as Didi got to work that night -- more the idea of fall to come, than autumn itself. And she had cases of cranberry ale and pumpkin spice vodka to unpack.

In a few weeks, she'd be as tired of pumpkin spiced things as anyone. But that night, it was nice to pour a shot of the vodka into a mug of warmed milk and nurse it as she went about her business.

While purple jello had been raining outside the dorms, purple jello shots had been raining inside the bar. Or at least, that was the only explanation Didi could come up with for the tiny purple-filled plastic cups littering every table and large swaths of the floor.

She couldn't even venture a guess as to how they'd all landed on their bottoms, without so much as spilling a drop.

She made a sign on the bar's chalkboard -- End-of-Summer Special: Free Grape Jello Shots -- and settled in behind the bar to see who would take advantage of it.

Didi noticed the scent of roses that accompanied the island's return to its home dimension as soon as she left her house. (It made for a nice distraction from wondering where exactly Tamsin had gotten off to.) By the time she made it to the bar, there was a black rose tucked behind one of her ears, and a white one poking out of her bag. They didn't come from anywhere in particular: Like so many of the Endless's personal possessions, they simply Were.

She twisted the flowers absently through the day, enjoying their silky petals against her fingers in between the mundane work of running the bar.

The bartender was in, and more than usually sympathetic.

The girl had no idea who she was or where she was, and somehow that was all right. She'd wasted the previous day with a long ramble along the beach gathering shells. It was morning again now, and she had a park, some stale bread for the ducks, and a bench to perch on.

She felt a nagging sense there was some important duty she was neglecting, some echo of a memory telling her this was not all right. She tossed another crust of bread at a fat duck and watched the flamingo try to intercept it, and decided she didn't care in the slightest.

The band had a new drummer this week. (The last one's arms had finally fallen off in a way all the duct tape in the world wouldn't fix; he sat on the edge of the stage, arms balanced in his lap and a sullen expression on his face.)

Didi wouldn't have had any particular opinion about the changes to the band, except the new drummer was exuberant and insisted on playing VERY LOUDLY. Which made all the other zombies start playing more loudly to keep up.

It was a good night for earplugs at Caritas. Ask nicely, and Didi would even give you a pair.

Didi badly wanted to be off exploring the planet Fandom had landed near most recently. Even from across the causeway it looked positively vibrant.

But as that wasn't an option during her shift, she contented herself at the bar creating space-themed cocktails. Eventually, she got draw into an argument with Tino over whether she did or did not still work at the bar. It was surprisingly hard to persuade him that she did; he kept saying he hadn't seen her in months, like that meant something.

Some days were 'feed the ducks' days.

Not for any particular reason, really. Sometimes Jono was feeling a bit down, sometimes he just wanted to get out of the house and stretch his legs. Today's reason wasn't either of those things. He already was stretching his legs, enjoying an afternoon jog, when on his way along the path by the pond he realized it had been a while since he'd just sort of taken a seat on the bench and enjoyed the quiet that the park had to offer.

Well, the relative quiet, anyway. Ducks squabbling with one another for a piece of bread were hardly silent.

Either way, he'd made a quick detour, stopped by T&C for a small loaf of bread, and then made his way back to the park to do just that. The ducks didn't seem to care either way about the man on fire, at least. They were far more interested in the food he was tossing their way.

Jono could make himself available in his office today, but the truth of the matter was, he would really rather claw out his own eyes than spend a day sitting at his desk waiting for somebody to come along to grill him on what he was teaching their little darlings. Besides, he had a business to run, here. There was a new Janet Jackson album out yesterday and instead of getting any copies of that in, his supplier had shipped him double copies of the new Trivium album.

Which... hey... great. He had no doubt he could sell them all given enough time and maybe some kind of dedicated metal marketing strategy. The band had never really wowed him, but... somebody had to like them, right?

Anyway, he'd left a map on his office door back at the school directing anybody who might care to talk to him to come out here, where he was aggressively hunt-and-peck typing e-mails back and forth to his supplier. No, extra copies of the new Sevendust album weren't going to get Janet on his shelves, either. And he was sure Avicii was great, but... Janet? Please?

No he didn't need a life-sized cardboard cutout, just send him the bloody albums!

...

Okay, the cutout couldn't hurt, either.

It was the last day of the reunion and Jessica figured she needed to take a moment alone. Get some solitude, a place to be with her thoughts for a little bit, in a quiet place. The beach would work. Have some white noise from the water, what could possibly be more relaxing.

When she got there, food was already on the grill, the volleyball net was set up, and a pig was sitting next to a spit, eating from a trough. There had to be a story there. And wait, who started grilling food on a beach only to leave it, and a pig? If this was Fandom magic, it was really weird Fandom magic.

Anyway, alone-time apparently wasn't happening. She could settle for some BBQ as long as she avoided anything that might have come from that pig's family.

Tino's bucket collection had grown overnight; now he had two buckets instead of one. The three of them -- Tino and the buckets -- all seemed very happy together.

The Perk had way too much coffee today. Caritas, on the other hand, had not nearly enough of anything. The beer taps had allrun dry, and the usually bottom less shelves of liquor and mixers had found their bottoms. Didi wasn't entirely sure whether it was Fandom weirdness or a natural problem, but the end result was the same.

Tino took off for a liquor store on the mainland, while Didi cut up a lemon and made a giant vat of lemon water. The sign outside the bar today read:

Tino's shot glass artistry had progressed over the last 24 hours, and he was now amusing himself by building towers so high that he had to stand on a stool to reach the top.

Didi was having a perfectly passable day at the bar, though not without a few Fandom diversions. There was the seaweed she kept picking out of her hair for no apparent reason, and the shark gummies swimming laps in the shots in the bar fridge ... oh, and the pile of sand on the karaoke stage. That was new.

She didn't remember the zombies wearing Hawaiian shirts before, either.

She was starting to get the feeling the whole bar wanted to be at the beach, and she couldn't blame it. She loaded up the margarita machine, asked the zombies to play a Beach Boys medley, and pretended she was close enough to smell the ocean.

Caritas had a rainbow theme today. Flags hung from the bar and walls, and Didi had decorated her top hat with a rainbow ribbon. She was in a resoundingly good mood as she polished the bar and watched for customers. She didn't care so much what marriage meant; it wasn't so long ago by her reckoning that it had been more about cementing family alliances than anything else. But love? Love was eternal, and love was worth celebrating.

A sign outside the bar read, Special: Free Rainbow Jello Shots. Didi was going to blame Tino for that one.

The zombies were dressed in their spiffies rags today, and a glance at the sign topping the merchandise table to the side of the stage showed why.

CD RELEESE PARTY, it read. FEECHERING HIT SINGLES "BRAINS" AND "GRRR ARRRGH".

Didi was going to spend the rest of her shift wondering how they'd found a studio to record in. Musicians might not be the most hygienic people on earth, but they were still normally a little cleaner than zombies.

Groovy Tunes, Sunday

Jono's yesterday had been fairly fantastic, actually. There had been food, and... not food, which had been every bit as enjoyable as the food. And yes, he'd even enjoyed the shopping more than he'd ever care to admit. Even if he was probably never going to wear that dress again. Ever. Because honestly.

But today brought some vague sort of acceptance that he still had responsibilities even when he had temporary breasts, and so he was at the Groovy Tunes today doing paperwork, balancing budgets, and enthusiastically singing along with anything and everything that came on the radio. His voice as a woman wasn't really familiar to him, so it was a fun game trying to figure out what songs he could handle and which ones made him regret opening his mouth. But, so help him, he was singing.

He wasn't looking forward to this ending, almost as much as he was. But really, he rarely ever felt at home in his own skin, so this was less an inconvenience and more like a novelty. And there were worse people to bear a striking resemblance to than Joan Jett, anyway.

Didi loved the Friday before holiday weekends. Everyone seemed more relaxed. Somehow, it even happened on the island -- where it wasn't like most people worked a five-day week to start with. And because Memorial Day marked the start of summer, it was even better: The anticipation in the air was electric.

She made up some lemonade-based cocktails and sipped one of them slowly as she sat at the bar, pretending she was already on the beach.

As one of, what, possibly three people on the island who hadn't been affected by Fandom's whims over the weekend, Jono was actually in a fairly decent mood today. And why shouldn't he be? The last time he'd found himself twenty years older thanks to Fandom's whims, he'd had a pair of boots thrown at his head.

Still and all, he'd been terrible at opening the shop over the weekend anyway, and had decided to make it up tonight by not only opening the Groovy Tunes, but also putting a 'buy one CD, get a second one free' sign up in the window in an attempt to attract customers.

Who knew? Maybe he could introduce the island's population to something they'd never heard before. That was always fun.

Jasper woke up face down in the sand. It wasn't a very appetizing breakfast. He eventually rolled onto his back and had to hold up a hand to block out the sun. Squinting, Jasper sat up and tried to figure out how he'd gotten there.

He remembered this weekend and that he'd been older and...vague. He remembered the sea of older faces but he couldn't find anything about who he'd been twenty years from now. For him, it was far easier to dismiss some sort of weird time travel than to grapple with not knowing what he'd be in the future. Last night, he'd remembered walking in the shadows, watching...someone? Something? He'd been trailing someone, that was a definite, but he didn't know why. He remembered thoughts of exhilaration and relief but why? Had he -- ?

No. No, he wasn't going there.

Instead, he spit some more sand out and pulled his knees up. Maybe he'd just soak up the scenery and try and forgot that he'd possibly turned himself into Dear Old Dad. Billy would be so proud.

Damn straight.

And what the crap was this Jazz stuff? Ugh.

The weather was still a little cloudy in the evening, but it was warm enough that hopefully people would still feel like partying. There was certainly enough food for a party, along with cool drinks and equipment for beach games like beach volleyball. Or beach dodgeball. Or beach something-else-with-balls because the residents and alumni of Fandom tended to be a creative and violent lot.

As the sun went down, the tiki torches came out, so there was no rush to head back indoors. It was time for an evening of fun!

It turned out that saying you were going to arrange things in your Realm so you could spend more time on a particular version of earth was much easier than doing it. By the time Death had negotiated the details with her other aspects to ensure no creature in the multiverse would die unattended while she was preoccupied, several weeks had passed since Didi's last visit to Fandom.

She had a bit of a history with the park in the island, so she bought some bread and went there as a way to pass time while she figured out what to do next. If she was sticking around for a while, she'd want a job and a place to stash her stuff, even if she didn't strictly need either.

But there was no rush on any of that. For now, there were ducks and flamingos to feed, and the sunlight on her bare shoulders to appreciate. It was enough.

Bay had picked up just enough about the weirdness going on to know she wanted no part of it. She'd mostly stayed in the relative safety of her room, sketching and listening to music.

In other words, it wasn't that different from any other weekend.

But by Sunday afternoon, it was clear the weird wasn't either dangerous or affecting her. Going out seemed relatively safe. It was in a vaguely melancholy mood that she took a shortcut through the graveyard and spotted a pretty, petite dark-haired girl with wicked eye makeup.

"Hey," Didi said cheerily. "What's up?"

"Getting something to eat," Bay said. "I don't know you, do I?"

Didi smiled at her. "You don't, but I know you."

That weirded Bay out more than a little, but it was clear the Goth chick wasn't any kind of a threat. And, as they kept talking, it turned out Didi was right -- and had some helpful advice to boot.

It was early evening, and Jono, being somewhat twitchy after realizing that the island was doing something strange again, had decided that he needed some fresh air. Sure, 'fresh air' seemed to translate to 'coffee.' Was that really so wrong, just so long as he was going to sit in the park while he drank it?

Never mind that it was too late in the day for coffee, please. He'd actually stopped by J,GoB for a few bagels, and a coffee just seemed like the thing to get for himself, at the time.

The bagels, of course, were for the ducks.

Jonothon had a bit of a history, when it came to feeding ducks in the park. Sometimes, it was nice to just sit alone and toss them a few crumbs between thoughts. These days, it was a little bit like brooding, but with some of the edge filed off. And he was quite alright with that, thank you.

Jono had new clothing, Jono had a guitar, and Jono had brought little Hendrix-the-fish to work with him today. Partly for company, partly because he didn't want Hendrix to make a graceful leap out of his little fish bowl during the course of his shift without any possibility of rescue. He wouldn't have been terribly pleased to come back to his room to find a petrified goldfish on the floor, after all.

He strongly suspected that Aquaman wouldn't have been terribly thrilled, either.

At least, he supposed, he could spend the day playing music as he always did, and he could pass that off as... bonding. Music lessons or some such rot.

Del was feeling a little restless on her first day at work, and weirdly enough, it wasn't because of the job, no; she felt like she needed to be somewhere else. Maybe she could send some fishies to look for Dream? She wasn't sure she could pick up his presence of the island, mainly because it had never occurred to her that the Endless could do that -and since they had the sigils for a reason, the youngest Endless had forgotten that fact-. But she had to stay put and do her job. Delirium working would usually imply her chasing very visible music notes at the back of the store, but not today. Today she was bouncing behind the corner, looking at the door unsure of what to expect. She could totally leave a fishie on charge, they were so smart!

And yet she doubted the fishie would be able to give change to the costumes.

All in all, Groovy Tunes was open.

Centuries ago, it had been hewn from the side of a mountain and inscribed with secret words by one with both magic and a deep and abiding sense of love. The words had infused it with power and, as far as a medium-sized stone can manage it anyway, a sense of determination. One might even say stubbornness.

The light of the stars in Fandom's sky had awakened it and it had a job to do.

It sent tendrils of power sliding across the island, searching out the people who lived here and more, the people who had once lived here. They were still bound, still connected, to the island, and the stone used those connections to send its power far across the multiverse.

The power didn't demand, and it didn't threaten. It was calm and subtle and warm, like a tropical breeze, sliding through people's consciousness (or trying to, in any event; Fandom seemed to have more than its fair share of those whose minds stubbornly resisted the stone's influence) to draw out the memories of those they had loved and lost, inviting them to dream.

The stone was a straightforward sort of thing, with all the imagination one would expect of a medium-sized stone, so its message was also straightforward.

If you dream them, they will come.

It was a promise.

Pleased with itself, the stone settled into its task, secure in the knowledge that it could only be found by those it managed to entice into following the power's path to touch it.

[Glee! Ehem, yes. There's OCD for those who are coming to touch the stone and for those who want to find where the heck this weird power signature/feeling is coming from or where these people are going. Not that they'll find out, but when has that ever stopped anyone?

That people in the first thread went into the woods is FB (unless otherwise marked); touching the stone is NFB.]

Didi sang to herself as she reordered the shelves today. It was a little weird (especially because she didn't sing that well) but it helped her keep the rhythm of her work without getting bored. It also had the side effect of annoying Apu.

Didi wouldn't admit how much she enjoyed that.

Didi spent most of the morning trying to convince Apu that his calender wasn't wrong, and she really had switched her workday to Mondays for the rest of the summer.

Once he'd finally quieted down about that, it was time to put together a sales display of the leftover 4th of July stuff. She held back a few boxes of sprinklers for her own use, before making a sign:

50% Off All Fireworks!
15% Off Everything for Newbies!

Squishy flavors: Raspberry, Pineapple. Blueberry

"I still can't get that song out of my head," Didi told Jono as they stood in line to buy tickets for Plaything Saga III. "It might be making me nuts."

She sounded cheerful, though, and why shouldn't she be? She had a week off, she her boyfriend, she was going to get popcorn, and a Disney movie guaranteed to make her sob like a little girl was on its way. The fact all of this was soundtracked to "Hungry Like the Wolf," and had been since her day at work yesterday, was a side note.

[OOC: For the boy! Unless somebody else is in a mood for Pixar.]

Didi was cheerful as she restocked the shelves at T&C today. The store sound system had gotten stuck on a cheerful hits of the 80's station, Apu was in a good mood, and there were absolutely no crises in progress.

It might be too good to last, but Didi wasn't about to jinx the day by thinking that way. She'd sing along to Wham! instead.

Squishy Flavors: Duran Duran Durian, Katrina & the Watermelon, Toni Basil

[OOC: Open shop! OCD is such a pity, can't you understand?]
