Rilla Blythe, forced to strip her way through college in order to be able to pay the bills for herself and her adorable illegitimate son, was in the back room of the Devil's Nest trying in vain to get the glitter and regret out of her skin after another long shift of degrading herself for five dollar bills.

"Why does life have to be so hard?" she demanded to her reflection as a single, photogenic tear trickled down her cheek.

[OOC: Open to other strippers, people passing through, whatever! Whee SOW!]

Rilla was hand-addressing Christmas cards to all of the people who had attended Bruce's gala in Fandom in the summer. What passed for regular handwriting at home was pretty fancy script now, and Rilla was taking advantage.

When she called Albert to report on her progress, he got an earful about what she'd learned in cooking class yesterday about pairing wines with food.
[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com
Rilla was back behind her desk this week, working industriously on a guest list based on the three charitable funds she'd picked out. The suggested donation per table made her heart beat a little fast, but Alfred had insisted that she hadn't gotten a zero wrong when she'd 'phoned him up in a panic, so Bruce's friends must be terribly well off.

And Christmas was a time for giving, wasn't it?

She hoped?
[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com
Rilla arrived bright and early after dropping Jims off at the daycare center, a hand crocheted bag full of pictures and knick-knacks for her desk over her arm.

She carefully placed the photograph of Walter in a place of honour, along with the snapshot Kenneth had sent in his last letter. He looked quite grown in it: it was hard to mesh that face (and his new promotion) with their night on the porch in Ingleside. She could be engaged to Ken, but being engaged to Captain Ford was quite another matter.

Decorating done, she sat down with the files Bruce had given her and a highlighter and began a list of pros and cons for each charity.

It was good to be busy.

The Wayne Foundation was open!
[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com
If Rilla hadn't wanted to go to a carnival, she really had not interest in going to the dance.

She still dropped Jims off with the sitter, though, and was now drinking a cup of tea and reading a copy of the letter Walter's batallion commander had sent to her family, assuring them that Walter had died instantly in an assault.

At least he hadn't suffered. That was some relief, at least.

Shortly before sunset, the party was ready to start. The park was decorated with classy black and white decorations, music was playing from hidden speakers, food and drinks were set up, there was a man from the bank with a stack of giant checks….

So apparently there were a couple things that set this apart from the normal Fandom party.

The setting sun was an unsubtle reminder that summer was about to end. And that was what this was all about, really, besides the orphans. One last big party with your friends who would be gone soon, a week before a brand new big party with your incoming friends. This was for you, Fandom, and also the orphans.

It was also probably notable that the guy throwing the party was not there yet. Which just went to show that you could still show up fashionably late even if you were the host, planner, AND decorator.

The weather was being kind - perhaps unnaturally so. There was a large gap in the clouds right above Fandom island, sending sunlight streaming down even as the sun made its way towards the horizon.

Perfect time for a beach party. More or less. The organizers were just happy the date they'd picked and put on all the invites looked like it was turning out sunny, okay?

There were coolers with lemonade and... other things, there were beach balls and there was sand: perfect excuse for a party, right?

It was a Fandom tradition that went back... well, at the very least several years: graduation brunch, offering visitors and locals alike the best food available on the island.

There was a banner that stretched from tree to tree declaring CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2013 in big glittery letters. There were tables full of moddable food and drink. There were happy decorations in blue and yellow and a long series of picnic tables for people to sit at and mingle.

And then there was the bit at the end where Mayor Swanson was barbecuing an entire pig's worth of food. Uh... Yeah.

"I thought after a busy weekend," Rilla said with a slight smile, "it might be nice to take time to pamper ourselves. The people here have offered us a very fair deal on getting our nails done, so we can sit back and exchange all of the news--" gossip, "--about the dance and any dates you might have set up after the function at that...bar...on Saturday."

Though if any of those dates were with Bruce Wayne, Rilla would go selectively deaf about them.

It being Finals week, it was, naturally, time for the Drama final. Of course, this being Fandom, pen-and-paper finals were hardly required, and so Thor had decided that the best thing to do was give a very practical final. In the form of a Christmas/Midgardian/Other-worldlyian holiday recital, naturally. He’d even managed to book time at the Boards for the occasion. And being a public space, it was of course open for anyone to come and watch.

And speaking of watching, yes, that'd be mistletoe hanging on the ceiling... just about any time anyone looked up. Have fun with that!

Pinkie had herself a nice, frothy hot cocoa and had stationed herself at the table by the window, enjoying the sun.

She also had a map of Fandom spread out on the table, with little statuettes of residents of the island scattered across it. And a green helmet with a star on it. And a little stick she used to push the little statuettes around the map.

"If I set off the party cannon here," she pondered, moving a tiny pink pony figure with a cannon over to the park. "That would get me the most coverage per square foot. Plus, it'll be out in the open so anypony can wander by and join in!"

This was going to be the most strategic party ever.

Jonothon had woken up with practically every NPC child on the island sleeping in his theatre this morning. Every. Last. One.

This had set off quite the chain of events. First, he'd had to feed them. He was pretty sure he wasn't going to have to make that many pancakes again for the rest of his life. And then he had to make a trip to the church to leave a sign on the door, directing any actual caretakers of these children to the Boards to pick them up. The kids had followed him on that trip like two rows of little baby ducks, which had been adorable, at least. And then came more feeding, because apparently children were bottomless pits.

And he had to do all of this without coffee, since he'd given that away yesterday in order to keep Korra from burning the building down.

Now, if anyone were to stop by the Boards, they'd find Jonothon half-draped over a chair, tiredly reading printouts of children's stories that he'd found on the internet for the few remaining children while he waited for their families to collect them.

Once they were all gone, he was going to sleep for about a month.

[Open Boards, naturally! If you left a kid with Jono, feel free to stop in or handwave picking him up. Poor Jims. I'll be a little slow while I'm at work, of course, but around-ish all day.]

Officer Clint Barton stared out across his desk, slowly stirring a cup of coffee as music swelled softly behind him. It was difficult being a man of the law in this town, but it was the only way he could think of to have a chance of finding his long-lost twin brother, and keeping himself busy kept away the memories of the terrible boating accident, the one that had stolen his family away...

No, he couldn't think about that right now. There was too much to do, too much corruption in this town for him to sit and wallow in his own thoughts. So, he sat back and flipped through his terribly cheap prop paperwork, looking for the next person to send to justice.

A body washed up onto the beach. As the waves slapped his face a little more, the body started to stir again.

Bruce didn't remember this - he didn't remember ANYTHING - but there had been an accident on his yacht. He hit his head and fell overboard. He checked his pockets and did find his drivers license, so he figured his name out quickly. But those pockets brought up other questions. Like 'Why did he have multiple wedding rings in his pocket?' Or 'Why was there a new wedding ring on his hand, with a date of last Saturday engraved on the inside along with 'The one I've been searching for. And this time, I mean it.'

Bruce had mysteries to investigate. Who was Bruce Wayne? Who was this wife? What was the deal with the other rings? How would anyone explain his dry clothes in a future scene when he didn't know where he lived or where his clean clothes were? He needed to find out the answers to all of these, so he started wandering back towards civilization.

Today, when all the children awoke in their beds, they would discover a most joyous occasion! There was a carnival in town! A carnival just for them! All the rides and events were all child-safe and kid-friendly. Even the thematic decorations had become kiddified; no worries about nightmares from this little guy, huh? Didn't he look like fun? Don't you just want to give him a hug?

As for any remaining adults on the island, well...there was still a carnival, okay? Sure, the rides were a lot tamer and a lot brighter and you were possibly too tall to ride the them, but it was still a carnival! A carnival soon to be filled with the loud laughter of many, many children all hyped up on drinks and food that all listed 'sugar' as their prime ingredient!

Truly, this was a day of fun and laughter for all! And probably a night filled with headaches and belly-aches for most!

After a very frustrating class in childcare (honestly, those children had been monsters, and grocery shopping should not be that difficult), Rilla picked up Jims from daycare and went down to the beach.

It was ridiculously hot outside, and while she was careful to put Jims on a blanket in a shady area, she needed to be drenched head to toe in a vain attempt to cool down a bit (in a swimsuit from 1915, so it wasn't like she had much skin showing...).

She was trying to stop Jims from eating a handful of sand when the raven arrived. She let out a shriek of surprise to see it (and another one when it took a nip from her finger), but then realized he was carrying a message for her.

She smiled with relief to hear from Dany after all the time and rummaged around looking for paper to write a very long letter back in reply.

Jake was in a pretty good mood as he came in to work today. The kids' graduation had come and gone- well, not without incident, but with... fairly self-contained incident. Let's put it that way. Handwavily seeing people visit with their friends and family had made him think maybe he ought to go back to St. John's for a couple days, just to catch up with everyone. And maybe rub his father's face in the fact that he'd managed to build a pretty successful life here in Fandom, yes.

So paintball... paintball was kind of getting big. Like, bigger than Topher had expected, really.

Now, sure, he could stay outside and keep shooting at people and ducking to cover and hoping for the best. He could, sure. Or he could play to his strengths and flee to somewhere where he'd probably be safe and where he could do something he was good at.

So he made his way (very, very stealthily, mostly as a result of following Peter-the-fox's lead) to Stark Industries, stopping only once on the way to pick up a ton of paint, and then handwavily texted Billy with his idea. Only a few minutes later, he was standing on the front desk, peering at the sprinkler system overhead and trying to figure out how it could be manipulated the way he wanted it.

Yeah, this was going to be awesome.

The community center had been decorated (glitterified), the models were probably backstage by now either looking fabulous or questioning their life choices, and once everyone was ready there were two emcees taking the stage.

Rilla was still not wild about public speaking when it wasn’t over the radio (there, no one could stare at her), and so she said a quick prayer that she wouldn’t lisp too terribly. The poor starving Belgians were counting on her efforts here!

“Hello,” she said with a tight, nervous smile, “and welcome to the first annual--” things sounded better when they could become annual events, right? “--Kappa Delta Gremlin Fashion Show!”

After waiting for any applause- and there had better be applause, it was only polite- Annie continued, "Tonight you're going to see members of the sorority, fraternity and Pride show off some fashions, and help raise money for the Red Cross to help people all the way back in 1915!" Which probably wasn't going to create some weird time paradox, right? They were being helpful. And retro. Retro-ly helpful.

Rilla waited for that applause to die down before concluding, “And tho--” bad word. BAD WORDS THAT RILLA DIDN’T EVEN THINK FOR THE POORLY TIMED LISPING RIGHT NOW, GOD, “--without further ado,” or any other words with s, if she could help it, “our first model!”

The town hall had been transformed into a ballroom fit for a queen (and/or king. Or multiples thereof). The ceiling was resplendent in ribbons of royal purple, gold and white, and castle murals adorned the walls.

As they entered, tonight's guests were offered their choice of crown or tiara. Over by the photographer who doesn't have a thread because that's what happens when you post at 6:30 in the morning, there was a pair of thrones set up to really complete the theme.

The girls had been handwavily notified to meet at Pixie Dust (with a handy map attachment included for anyone who might be too new to know where it was) for today's meeting. Because it would be bad to have a meeting and forget to tell people where.

"Hey, everyone! With Valentine's Day next week and the dance this weekend- and I hope you all stopped by the table and bought your tickets-" Annie was not above a shameless plug, no. "-and we thought we could spend today doing a little preparation."

Rilla nodded enthusiastically. Dress shopping was always fun! “Styles might have changed drastically from where or when you originally come from, but it never goes out of fashion to be tastefully dressed for a formal occasion.”

Which meant she’d be judging bare shoulders and a lot of knees showing, just FYI.

Right, don't dress like a strumpet. "So today we're going to spend time in the store, and if you need help you have plenty of support here," Annie went on. "Even if you're not planning on going to the dance and don't need to get anything, it's fun to just look around and try things on, right?"

“Right!” Rilla squealed. “And they have really good bargains in the back of the shop if your dollar doesn’t go quite as far as it did in 1914...”

Just to pull a year out of thin air.

During the afternoon, workers had built up a large firepit in the center of the park. Smaller ones were built a short distance away from it, just to make sure nobody froze during the festivities.

There was ice on the pond, thick ice, and someone had set up a small booth alongside it renting out skates for the night. Closer to the bonfire, there was a buffet, partly already cooked (and with cocoa, too!), partly set up with raw meat, fish, marshmallows and vegetables for the more enterprising crowd who might want to roast something over one of the fires.

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

It had taken some doing to get a decent party together on an island currently off the coast of Atlantis, but the Darlings knew that all things were possible with enough money and a few well-placed tantrums from Juliet. And so the pre-Fourth of July summer fiesta came to be.

Chinese paper lanterns marked off a section of the beach, and a mix of popular music came from the DJ booth in one corner. A barbecue-themed buffet was set up in a tent, which also hosted a few small tables and chairs for anyone who needed to take a break.

Due to any number of factors, Karla and Warren had been planning to celebrate their shared birthday a little early this year. They didn't want to interfere with people's graduation or vacation plans, as a last hurrah before finals, making sure their off-island friends would be able to attend mun failure at remembering her own character's birthday, all of these had convinced them to throw their birthday party a few days before it actually occurred. As a party, it was intended to be just as much of a celebration of the approaching end of the semester as a birthday party.

What they hadn't intended was the entire island turning into small children over that same weekend. It was a good thing that credit cards and bank accounts had already been charged before hand, or things might have gotten really awkward. As it was, the company hired to make sure the party went off without a hitch got to Fandom, set-up, and drove off before realizing that anything was amiss.

Which was probably for the best, as it meant they didn't have to watch their equipment become slowly transformed into kidlet-appropriate games and activities by Fandom's magic. What had been a party setup designed to appeal to a bunch of jaded teens had become a brightly-colored wonderland of kids' toys.

Don't worry, though. There was still cake.

Although the weekend was almost over, the esteemed alumni of Fandom High were not getting away without one last get-together. The park had been deemed too cold for the event, so the community center had been set up again with tasteful blue and yellow streamers and real flowers on the tables, although there might have been a few paper flowers still lying around from last night too.

There was plenty of food just waiting to be eaten, and if someone asked nicely, they might be able to acquire a drink or two as well. It was five o'clock somewhere.

No, Edmund wasn't in the wrong place and neither was this post; there was an incredibly direct note taped to the classroom door pointing his Dealing With Idiots students this way.

He also wasn't wearing one of the lovely purple uniform shirts stacked on the table beside him, and as for the hats... well. You couldn't pay him to put one of those on.

Just in case that wasn't obvious, he opened with a subtle allusion to that very fact: "You couldn't pay me to put one of those hats on." See? Subtle. "If you've any sense at all, the same is true for you."

Blackadder smiled somewhat evilly. Well.... not evilly, not really. Just bastardly. Evil took more effort than he cared to expend. "Luckily for us all, I'm not paying you; I'm just ordering you. Welcome to the Real World, and I don't mean that programme where they shove a bunch of spoiled twenty-somethings into a flat for six weeks and interview them on the commode about the previous week's adventures in fornication. I'm talking about the service industry. Today, half of you will be wearing the pointier and less dangly bits of a cow on your heads, while the other half try as hard as possible to make your lives completely miserable while ordering food from you."

All right, maybe he was a little evil. "The place is also open to the public, so you'll have to deal with any real idiots who wander in."

[OOC: Open! Post is for Dealing With Idiots class and anyone else who wants to traipse in and make their lives hell by ordering a Super McDuper McMoobity Meal with no bun, ranch dressing on the side, extra ice in the Diet Coke and a mini-moob meal toy without the mini-moob meal.]

It was a clear early spring morning as the sorority gathered at one end of the park for a 5k Fun Run. The registration table (bedecked in pink and green, natch) held bottles of water, logo t-shirts, and a basket to collect donations to the child abuse foundation, and the route was marked off with pink and green ribbons tied to trees and street signs along the route..

"Thanks for coming out," Quinn began in a loud, clear voice. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail, and she almost looked like she'd ironed the t-shirt and running pants. "This is what we hope will be the first of many Kappa Delta Gremlin events to let us improve ourselves and give back to the community. The route's just about three miles, so it shouldn't be too much of a challenge for most of us. And if you make it across the finish line, there will be Shamrock shakes waiting."

Bribery always helped.

As the posters had been saying all week, the KKG were hosting a haunted house and horror movie marathon in one of the abandoned warehouses in town. There were more signs set up, pointing the way to the warehouse in question, and gauzy fake spiderwebs and green and red lights illuminated the doorway to the building, accompanied by the eerie creaking and groaning sound effects that one might expect from such a thing.

The boys from the Kappa Kappa Gremlin wouldn't mind a donation of $5 should you like what there was to see inside, but admission is free, if you happen to be completely broke.

The doors were open, if you dared to enter.

[Open to anyone and everyone!]

In keeping with this year’s Homecoming theme, the carnival was decorated in all shades of blue, teal, turquoise and green. There were fish bowls on each table, under the sea murals painted on the sides of booths and fountains dotting the perimeter of the park.

The carnival was in full swing. The smells of carnival foods were wafting throughout town and the sounds of rides and different games could be heard from all corners. It was Homecoming weekend and the student council hopes you have a great time!

Lacey had been nattering on to the staff for a while now about a hundred little initiatives they could all take to be more environmentally conscious around the diner: CFL lightbulbs, more ecofriendly soaps and cleaning supplies, installing timers on the lighting, being careful about how often they opened the fridge, yadda yadda yadda.

She'd ordered the soaps and cleaning supplies over the weekend, come in this morning with a bag of CFL lightbulbs to tackle the kitchen and supply room lighting installations, and -- discovered that the walls had somehow sprouted wall planters of spinach and broccoli overnight.

"Boy, when I said I wanted to go green, this isn't exactly what I had in mind."

Luke's is not a greenhouse, but it's open.

Vida had been busy since early that morning, setting up the park to be perfect for the Strawberry Social. Fortunately, the park was bug free, but she had music playing to drown the sounds of Celine Dion from nearby residences. Said music tended toward the pop side, bouncy and happy, with a side of disco. Drake had nothing to do with that, really.

Several picnic tables were laid end to end, covered with red table cloths and adorned with flower arrangements. There were plenty of plates to load up with food, which was available in plenty, including just about every strawberry dish imaginable. Vida had gone overboard, yes. She'd also provided red flowers to tuck in the hair and red scarves for those who might be feeling red-deficient.

Ignore any threat of rain, the weather was gorgeous. Because Vida demanded it.

Anders didn't actually spend all week on the island, but after losing an entire week to being stuck in Special Collections he felt like making up for some of the time. Maybe lounging at the Perk with a triple blended mocha and whipped cream wasn't the optimal use of his time, but sometimes you just couldn't turn down the lure of caffeine and chocolate.

And a muffin.

Feet hooked into the rungs of his chair, he was lounging, drumming the fingers of one hand idly on the tabletop as he hummed softly to himself.

The tune could be familiar, yeah.

[OOC: Open like a coffeeshop. Mmm, caffeine.]
