It was Sakaki's last week here on the island; she'd be graduating at the end of it, and then she'd be heading back home for the summer before returning for veterinary school out in California, and it was a little bittersweet. Admittedly, she wasn't probably going to miss many of her classmates much; her shyness and general awkwardness left her not making many friends among her peers. But she would miss all of the animals at the shelter. She had the vet's email, too, so they could keep in touch, but she'd admit, she was still quite a bit intimidated by Sidon, so she probably wouldn't miss him much, either. She did think that everyone she worked with in the future would be rather boring and dull compared to him, though, but that was okay. That was more along her lines.

So she made sure the first aid kits were well-stocked and ready, because she was definitely going to be spending today and subsequent days to follow just saying goodbye to all the animals. Most of them should be fine, but she had a feeling the cats would be making the most out of their last chances to show their affection with all their bites, scratches, headbutts, and other acts of feline violence.

She really was going to miss them, and, though cats in Japan had been the same way, she sort of hoped cats in California might be a bit more....accepting.

This year's prom had an elegant black and white theme, and the Community Center was decked out with tasteful decorations that had all been covered in black and silver glitter. It was still fancy by at least some measures!

The food and punch were untainted (and unglittered) for the moment, and the dance floor was open for a fabulous time!

Sakaki had felt terribly nervous and distracted all last week, and it looked like it was bleeding into this week, too, but could anyone really blame her? She should be hearing back from the veterinary schools she applied to any day now, and it was nerve-wracked, thinking that she might not get into any of them. She had her preferences, too; she'd like to go to a school out in California, which...really, when you were flying or portaling, distance didn't make that much of a difference, but it would be nice to be closer to home while still being in America, although she would be pretty thrilled to be accepted into a Japanese school, too, and get to be with her friends more. There were a lot of possibilities, though, and not knowing was making her nervous and distracted.

She was trying to focus, then, on some studying and research, but she wasn't making a lot of progress. Thankfully, all the animals provided some cuteness as a distraction when she really needed it, even the cats, but that was mostly just because she was definitely keeping her distance.

With how close the shelter was to where the fire had been, Sakaki was incredibly relieved to see that it hadn't spread enough that any of the animals would have been in danger, although the vet told her that some of them had been a little stressed out about it. Either way, they both collectively decided together that they would spend a good portion of the day going over emergency protocols, just in case, and realizing that, if something were to happen, they could easily actually manage to get at least the cats out safely by just having Sakaki go around to collect them, and they'd end up just chomping onto her limbs and she could flail them off to safety.

It didn't seem like the safest method for her, but she had to admit, that was definitely a sacrifice she'd be willing to make for cats.

Hopefully, no one had any pressing business at the animal shelter that day, that would require assistance from more than just the vet, because one of the cats, apparently, had decided to use one of the dogs as her own personal bed, and so now Sakaki was rendered completely useless.

There was a chance she might snap out of it if something showed up to distract her, but this was a lot for her to process at the moment, and almost made her want to immediately rush to portalocity for a portal back home to have Maya do the same with Tadakichi-san STAT.

While she had already sent out her applications to all of her top choices for veterinary school, Sakaki was getting a little nervous about it, so she was researching and studying a few back-up plans and trying to get those applications out as soon as possible. She supposed she shouldn't be so nervous; she had been learning a lot, and, sure, there was still that problem with not being able to even really effectively treat most cats without having to need treatment herself, but both the vet and Sidon had provide her with glowing letters of recommendation, and she was pretty sure she was the only person applying to vet school that had a letter of recommendation from a Zora Prince, so that was pretty good, right?

And as she worked at the computer at the desk, Maya had curled up in her lap, so Sakaki was really hoping it was going to be quiet today. Not so she could get the work done, but because it would break her heart to have to disturb him if she needed to get up.

Her legs were definitely falling asleep.

It was definitely worth it.

Sakaki already had a particular weakness for cats, everybody knew that. But when that cat was a kitten, it was especially difficult for her to not completely lose herself in the adorableness, and when that kitten was engaged in standing with its paws on a potato and meowing at her imploringly, she was practically gone from this world.

Where did it get a potato? Who even knew? Did it matter? And why did it have a potato? She knew from her studies that raw potatoes were very toxic to cats, so she was going to risk the few scratches and the solid chomp she knew she would inspire by doing so, but the retrieved the potato, considered it thoughtfully, and then turned to figure out how to go about peeling and cooking the potato for the poor cat.

There were probably better uses of her time, sure, but when a kitten has a potato....

Sakaki had spent her entire day yesterday with Maya to make up for all the lost time and missing him for a full week (and thinking that she should have figured out a way to smuggle him in her luggage; after all, Maya was from Okinawa! He would have felt right in a place like Sumba Island!), but she was eager to see how the other animals at the shelter had been doing and getting lots of updates (and pictures!) from the vet about the exploits of the week that she missed.

There was especially a lot of excitement in preparing for all the little baby bunnies they were likely to have in a couple of weeks, too, and Sakaki was particularly excited about that.

But she was, mostly, still just hanging out with and clinging to Maya, hoping that they'd never have to be apart for that long ever again.

The rabbits? Were being a real problem that Monday.

The vet had helpfully (?) pointed out to Sakaki that it was just around the time for their mating season to begin, sure, but it looks like they were really trying to get the most out of it. Sakaki was trying her best not to be flustered by all of this, and the vet kindly suggested that perhaps she use this as an opportunity to learn more about the baby rabbits they were bound to be flooded with next month and the process of birthing and taking care of them.

Oddly enough, this was not actually helping much.

Love was in the air! Well, not really. That was later. But metaphorically, love, air, etc!

Caritas was decked out for Valentine's Day, with bunches of heart-shaped balloons in strategic places, copious amounts of pink and red confetti at the tables (a conversation starter!) and heart-shaped string lights above the bar and stage. And don't forget the glittery pink banner:

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES
IT'S LITERALLY ONLY FIFTEEN MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE

A few minutes before 8:00, Kitty took the stage. She was probably covered in glitter now. "Hello, everybody, and welcome to Three Minute Dates! If you've never done this before, the rules are simple. At 8:00 on the dot, we'll call your name along with one other person's. You'll get to know each other as well as you can in three minutes, and then the gong will sound and you'll get another name to meet. You'll do that for five rounds, and then if there's anyone you want to talk to more, you can meet up at the bar. Good luck, everybody!"

In addition to cleaning all the fish tanks on Friday, it seemed that Sidon had also gone through the trouble of setting up a nice new feeding area for the cats of the shelter, employing some very cute and very practical raised bowls, which would lead to nice, neat, and organized feeding times and Sakaki was really looking forward to seeing them all chomping down in their respective spots.

Of course (once she'd managed to survive the terrifying gauntlet that was the death-defying moment before pouring the food and getting out of the cats' way), because they were cats, this was not how it worked out at all.

Sakaki considered trying to step in and showing them that there was a better way to go about this, but after a second thought, she realized she, for the sake of her hands, should just stay out of it.

Sakaki hadn't meant to be so late for work that day; she'd just gotten caught up in one thing or another in her attempts to get ready and be on her way...

...okay, okay. So maybe while she was sleeping, Maya had curled up in the crook of her arm, and was still asleep there by the time she woke up, and she was so incredibly enamored with him in that moment that she couldn't bring herself to even move a muscle, and it was only when he finally stirred in order to start asking for breakfast that she was able to bring herself to get up and get her day started.

She knew that this was something she was going to have to work on, but today was not that day, and it could clearly wait for a time when her boss was not nearly so cavalier as Sidon was about tardiness.

At least she made it in, though, that was what really couldn't, wasn't it?

For the most part, Sakaki liked to think that she had made a lot of really great strides, in her time of working here at the animal shelter, in being able to control herself around cute things. More often than not, she could work through the urge to just slip into a state of comatose squee enough to take care of what needed to be done around Furnado: feeding the animals, cleaning their spaces, taking care of various scrapes and scraps, putting things away, updating files and what have you.

But then something happened like having to admit at new animal that tested the very limits of this progress she had made, and, this week, that was coming in the form of a little fluffball known as a red Cantonese bear dog.

The vet had made a comment of how she didn't actually think they were real, that it was just an internet hoax, and honestly? Sakaki's life would have been a whole lot easier if that were true, because then she wouldn't feel like she was slowly dying every time it looked up and waved that little stub tail of his. She was having serious doubts about being able to survive until the end of the day.

A very large shipment of a variety of hyper-realistic croissant pillows and cushions (and one baguette) had arrived at the animal shelter that day. Sakaki wasn't entirely sure they were supposed to have gone to the animal shelter, but the animals took to them immediately. The results were so incredibly cute and adorable that she wasn't going to question it. They were theirs now.

Unfortunately, this also meant that she was very unlikely to get any work done, but at least she was getting a lot of photos for her photography class. She just hoped she could manage to get some that might, coincidentally, manage to fit the assignment.

She was also wondering if croissants might be able to make it into the musical somehow, too.

Today was Sakaki's first day back at the shelter after having gone home for the winter break, and, of course, she'd brought back little treats for all of the animals, so most of her day on Monday was spent going around, distributing them, catching up on how they were all doing (and going over some files with the vet about some of the pets who may have had some issues over those weeks, to learn more about their care and treatment), and generally just feeling glad to be back.

Of course, the cats didn't immediately take to her gift-giving positively, but Maya was there to do the round with her and protect her, which kept the injuries....to a minimum. She had not managed to go through the gauntlet completely unscathed, but it had been far less worse than it could have been. There had even been a little bit of a scrap and tumble so that even Maya had to relieve a little bit of some treatment, but he did so with all the assurances of how brave and valiant he'd been, words of praise that he clearly took to heart with the way he strutted around the shelter importantly for the rest of the day.

The puppy pen was there for a reason, and that Monday, Sakaki was learning all about why. Because while the gingerbread buildings made for a very nice walk to the shelter that morning on her way in to work, making everything look incredibly cute and picturesque, it was suddenly not so charming when she was tasked with making sure that the animals weren't eating the walls when she got in.

Which meant corralling all the puppies into the pen, which was henceforth declared a gingerbread free zone.

And that was the easy part.

Because now she needed to deal with making sure the cats didn't eat too much of the walls, either.

Thankfully, the ginger seemed strong enough to put most of them off, but there were a few tenacious and curious ones that couldn't be swayed...

...the vet had plenty of bandages and the clinic's number ready to go on speed-dial, though, just in case...

The vet had been seeing something floating around the internet and social media of various shelters having a sort of "Pet of the Week" board, where there was not only a pet of the week position for an animal that had done particularly well, but also a naughty pet of the week for one who had behaved particularly poorly. Sakaki liked the idea behind the first part, but she didn't like the idea of calling out bad behavior in the animals and shaming them like that, and her concerns about the project were just compounded when she came in and saw this week's board for the cats specifically.

"If we put cats on the naughty list for biting us," she pointed out, "we'd have to put all the cats on the naughty list."

To which the vet responded by just handing a sharpie marker over to Sakaki and telling her she better get to work, then.

But Sakaki couldn't do it. She just couldn't bring herself to put any cat on the naughty list, and, in fact, tearfully wiped Leo's name off the naughty side and proceeded to put every cat in the store on the Pet of the Week good side.

The vet was still recovering from the holiday party that weekend to really care too much, either.

Has anyone ever wondered what frog Christmas music sounded like? Sakaki sure hadn't, but she was about to find out anyway, because, apparently, the traveling frog band had released a Christmas album while out on the road, and they sent some copies into the shelter for everyone to enjoy. Naturally, Sakaki put it on to play, she would have felt bad otherwise, and the reactions were....mixed.

One of the cats did keep trying to get up on the counter to knock the CD player off of it, but Sakaki honestly wasn't sure if that was more because he didn't like the music or more because he was just a cat.

She had to admit, though, their rendition of 'Carol of the Bells' done entirely in croaks and ribbits was rather artfully done.

Okay, Sakaki really did appreciate all the hard work that went into giving some of the dogs who were willing and eager a variety of adorable turkey costumes, but she was much less certain about how she felt about the turkey hats on the cats.

But she supposed she should try to see the cuteness in them, because it wasn't like any of the cats would let her get close enough to remove the hats without suffering some serious consequences.

And then she was mildly disturbed that it was kind of making her a little hungry. She didn't even like turkey! She wasn't even American (despite Osaka's claims to the contrary due to Sakaki's...erm...size)! She should not be getting hungry over this! But maybe she could run out and get some snacks to help with that.

Sakaki didn't know that she was supposed to be working at the animal shelter today, but Maya sure knew! And it didn't take much for the cat to convince the little girl to follow her all the way across the island until they got there.

And Sakaki didn't need much convincing to stay there, either, once she got there! So many animals! This place was amazing! And the very nice vet lady was good about giving her a few tasks to do, being patient even with the language barrier. She seemed to know enough Japanese, though, for them to get by. Even if it was mostly just helping with feeding the animals, it was still really nice! She wished she knew why Maya kept trying to keep her away from all the other cats, though; they seemed so cute and cuddly and friendly!

....unlike the terrifying little shark boy who was running around the place, too. That she didn't like at all, but Maya did a good job of protecting her from him, as well, and he might not be too bad if he wasn't just so rambunctious and loud (especially for someone who didn't even know how to speak properly, in Japanese or otherwise!).

Homecoming in November meant the community center was decked out in harvest-themed decorations for this evening's festivities. There were pumpkins that had somehow survived un-carved after Halloween, baskets of glittery vegetables (not for eating, please), decorative hay bales, and... a disco ball?

It's a dance, some things get dug out of the decoration closet no matter what the theme might be.

Sakaki was very surprised and even a little bit shocked to come into the shelter today to find that the place was absolutely littered with what looked like bottles and cans of various alcoholic beverages. Did the animals have a party over the weekend? How could Sidon and the vet allow such a thing? She may just be a fledgling veterinary students, but she knew enough to know that drinking and partying was not good for dogs and cats, let alone all the other animals like birds and lizards and fish!

Of course, her anger and mortification made way for sheepish embarrassment once Sakaki picked up one of the cans to discovered it was just some sort of plush toy.

Cheeks blazing pink, she sulkily went to clean them all up. True, they weren't really drinking and partying all weekend, but they could have at least tidied up a little after they were done!

Oh, sure. Sakaki was there at the shelter that day, but she had been rendered almost completely and entirely useless, because several, if not most of the animals were dressed up in costumes that day. Sakaki herself had put on a pair of cat ears for the occasion, blacking out her nose and drawing little whiskers on her cheek, and at least the distraction of the other costumes helped her feel less self-conscious about it.

She asked the vet if all the costumes were her and Sidon's work, but the vet just shrugged and avoided answering by giving Sakaki some work to do, which would not get done, because there were animals in costumes.

The only thing that did effectively pull her out of a cuteness coma was the occasional non-rain showers that were occurring intermittently. The candy wasn't so bad, but it was a little embarrassing how the spiders made her jump and scream and flail every single time, but at least they weren't real!

And she was really, really hoping she didn't turn into some sort of scary ghost again this year!

Sakaki was all in bandages and slings at Furnado again, but it had been entirely worth it.

She just felt a little bad, you see, that the puppies got all the love and attention this weekend for that birthday party, and so she wanted to make sure the kittens and cats were compensated by holding a party of their own.

The party itself was mostly successful. She set out all sorts of toys and treats and decorated some of their favorite cat towers and places to lounge, and most of them were just happy to get extra treats today, to terrorize some of the streamers and balloons, or completely ignore everything all together. Most of the problems came when Sakaki tried to give them adorable birthday hats like she'd seen on the puppies, and that....they were absolutely not having that.

Maya obliged, though, because Maya was perfect, and so at least Sakaki could soothe her wounds with the adorable balm that was her own cat.

Sakaki had really missed all the animals at the shelter, and so she was glad to be back that Monday, even if she had oh so handwavily spent most of her weekend here, anyway, to help with people picking up their kenneled pets and just to reconnect with everyone, especially Maya. She was worried the kitten might be a little upset with her for leaving (or, even worse, try to find her France the way he'd found her in Tokyo, but, thankfully, he'd stayed put with all his new friends), but he was just pleased to have her back, and kept the other cats at bay while she did her work.

There was one puppy that got a little overly excited when playing, though, and so they had to bandage up a hurt paw at some point. She felt terrible for the poor little guy, looking up at her with those big eyes with confusion for all the pain, but they patched him up quickly enough, and he was already starting to feel better, so it was good to have the practice and made her feel a little more confident about vet school.

Also, she had to admit, sometimes it was just nice that the bandages weren't being put on her for a change.

One of the cats was a little under the weather that day, which made Sakaki feel absolutely heartbroken, but it was a good, rare opportunity for her to spend a little time with the vet doing actual veterinarian work, which was the whole reason she was here, after all.

Almost as heartbreaking was the fact that, despite being sick, the cat in question still decided that the whole of her checkup was going to be conducted with her teeth sunk painfully into Sakaki's hand. But it allowed the vet to do what she needed to do, so she was just going to brace herself against the pain until she was finished, and then allow the vet to check up on her once they finally managed to pry the cat off of her.

So it was with a very bandaged and cradled hand that she attempted to go about the rest of her day, but she did so with a bright smile on her face, because the cat in question was already clearly feeling better, and that was what mattered, in the end.

Even though the visit with Chiyo-chan, her father, and Tadakichi-san had been brief, it had been nice and quiet and comforting, and so Sakaki really couldn't have asked for a better weekend.

Well, she would have liked it if Chiyo-chan's father had been a little more helpful when she turned to him for advice about veterinary school, but, to his credit, he had countered with some very good logic.

She was probably going to miss having Tadakichi-san around to pet, though, so it was thanks to him that she was actually spending a lot more time in the puppy pen than usual. None of them had the calm, solid reserve of Chiyo-chan's dog, though, so her hopes to just be able to sit there and pet a dog uninterrupted for long stretches of time were ruined, but it was ruined by playful little puppies who liked to pounce and wrestle with each other and try to climb on her like a jungle gym, so it was a price she was willing to pay.

Unbeknownst to Sakaki, people weren't the only ones talking like a pirate that day, which meant she was in for quite the surprise to come into the shelter that morning with Maya and discover that all the other cats were not only very vocal in their meowing today, but also doing it while dressed up in little pirate hats and a few eyepatches, having commandeered a few pirate-themed playsets for themselves.

Thankfully, thanks to Maya's vigilant presence and protection, she was saved from the inevitably very violent uprising when the cats thought of trying to mutiny on the counterspace, but he kept them bravely at bay, and she could just enjoy the pirate antics for the adorable adventure that they were.

It had been bothering her since her date with Tahani the other night, to the point where Sakaki almost made a special trip to the shelter to check, but the first thing she did when she got to the shelter that morning was hurry over to the frog band postcard billboard and search for any new ones she may have missed. And then let out a breath of relief that there were at least two that weren't there before she left for the break week, one from Montreal and one from Ontario, which was nice. It looked like they'd taken their show across the border!

So, with a great sigh of relief, Sakaki could now focus on her work here at the shelter, knowing that, if the frog band had met some terrible fate, it at least hadn't been in the last few weeks.

Although she supposed, things could take a terrible turn at any moment...

Your hostess wasn't gonna question it. And a few minutes before 8:00, she took the stage.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You talk to this person, get to know their likes, their loves, their dreams. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. Et cetera. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Have fun, and good luck..."

Someone had apparently gotten little cars for the rats to drive around shelter, and so while Sakaki was sort of hoping she'd have plenty of time that day to do some research on some veterinary schools and what she needed to do to start applying to them, she wound up basically having to play traffic officer, especially at some of the more dangerous intersections between the shelves, because there had been many rat-car collisions and even a few rat-car hijackings by some of the cats.

Thankfully, after a while, the rats seemed to understand the rules of the...erm....road a little better, even being so kind as to stop to let a turtle slowly cross the...um...street.

A new postcard had arrived from the traveling frog band, which was kind of a relief, if Sakaki was honest. They hadn't sent anything for a while, so she was a little worried that something had happened to them, but it looked as though they were fine, they just got distracted by the Great Lakes when they went up to Chicago (which was where the postcard was from) and they were now trying to put together a sort of blues set. Sakaki didn't really know much about music, though, so she was just glad they were safe and doing well and added the postcard to the board (which had been cleaned up nicely and smartly by Sidon, and she did not plan to touch it beyond adding postcards, because she's probably only make it terrible again).

Then she got to work, but she was a little distracted, still wondering if she should plan a trip home before the start of the next semester. It would be nice to see everyone, and Chiyo-chan had said something about everyone taking a trip Okinawa, which did sound like it could be a lot of fun.... And of course Chiyo-chan offered to help cover some of the cost of it for her, which was very nice of her, but then Sakaki would feel bad about taking her up on it...

She had some time to decide, at least, but it definitely had her distracted throughout the day, even when the cats were doing something particularly cute that would have usually snapped her attention right up.

If anything strange or unusual had happened this weekend, it slipped by Sakaki's notice entirely. She'd received a new stack of cat magazines from back home on Friday, and so she had a whole weekend of squealing over adorable pictures in the privacy of her own room, and of being enthralled by cat stories and cat comics, and of utterly failing at trying to recreate some of the cat crafts, and sighing wistfully at some new Neko Coneko merchandise that had been released. There was a summertime fun one where they both had the more adorable little sunglasses, and there was one where they had cowboy hats, and then little ninja ones....

And when she finally managed to pull herself away from her nice little cat bubble to go into the shelter, she was still thinking fondly about them, to the point where she barely even noticed the rearrangement of the cat platforms around the store. Granted, the cats did tend to leave her alone until she tried to engage with them, so she would have likely been fine, anyway, so long as she didn't provoke them into action. She was too busy trying not to have little bursts of cuteness attacks while attempting to get through her work, anyway.

Those little sunglasses...

Oh no.

Furnado now had banana beds. And if it weren't for the ones that were open clearly housing sleeping cats and dogs when Sakaki came in that morning, there was also the fact that some of them were closed, and, by peeling them open, she would discover all manner of other adorable critters slumbering away inside.

It was almost too much to handle.

It definitely made it worth the few times she peeled one away to reveal a cat inside who let it be known, very aggressively, that it did not appreciate being disturbed.

She was definitely leaving the shelter that day bandaged up, as usual, but she would also be toting back several of those bed for some of her plushies.

Taking a cue from the encouragement received in her Relationships class, Sakaki managed to gather together at least a few of the cats that day at the animal shelter, enticing them in with some food and, while they ate, she knelt down in front of them so that she could communicate to them her concerns.

"I feel hurt," she started, carefully, but with confidence in this apparently effective form of communication, "when you don't let me show you love or affection. I only want to pet you, and make you happy..."

So far, so good. The cats finished up their food and then looked at her expectantly.

"I feel joy," she offered, with a little bit of a smile, and her hand slowly starting to reach out, "when we can connected on a personal lev--"

Just when it looked like the closest cat was going to actually let Sakaki pet it, looking up at her hand with the pleased warmth of his upcoming food coma, he opened up his mouth and send his teeth sinking into the flesh of Sakaki's hand instead.

He clamped down hard, too, and the cat next to him quickly joined in, and, blinking through the tears and the pain, Sakaki tried not to shake them off. Instead, she tried communication.

"I also feel hurt," she said, punctuated with a little hiss of pain as she tried to gently remove the cats from her hand, "when you....bite...."

This communication thing did not seem to be working....

Sakaki had been tasked to decorate the billboard behind the counter tracking the sure-to-be meteoric rise to fame of the Traveling Furnado Frog Band across the country (and possibly across the world!), which she was very excited about, because she had a lot of ideas and was hoping to make the board as cute and adorable as possible.

Of course, Sakaki was completely devoid of any artistic talent whatsoever, so while the vision in her head involved a lot of adorable drawings of frogs playing instruments and some well-placed ribbons and bunting in various shades of green and white with a little touch of yellow here and there, the drawings were almost indecipherable and the attempted ribbons ended up looking like all of the puppies had not only pounced on all the materials and ripped them to shreds, but quite possibly also ate them up and promptly regurgitated them back up onto the board.

It was honestly a complete disaster, and Sakaki was stuck between wanting to feel proud that she'd at least tried or wanting to cry over how horrible it was to look at.

And attempting to to fix it, somehow, seemed to just make it worse.

At this point, they might be better off just burning it with fire.

Sakaki had read in one of her cat magazines recently that some cats are uncomfortable with making direct eye contact, especially with people they didn't know or like, because it was a sign of intimidation or aggression. This was very distressing news for Sakaki, because she could literally just stare at cats all day and be the happiest person alive because of it.

However, she was determined to get the cats at the shelter to like her somehow, so she was going to try her best that, when a cat caught her staring, she would turn her head away, divert her eyes, hopefully make them see that she was not trying to intimidate them and actually just wanted to be friends.

Unfortunately, this only resulted in the cat just getting up and leaving her field of vision by the time she turned to look back at it.

Well. At least just ditching her was better than straight up attacking her. Progress!

It would seem that this weekend had been a very big one for the frogs, as what started as just one adorable frog playing a keyboard had grown into something much, much larger. Sakaki still didn't know how they'd managed to procure such small instruments, much less figure out how to play them, but she also didn't know how they actually managed to get out of the tank and were now marching around the shelter, in their full frog band glory.

She was positive that stranger things had definitely happened, and, honestly, it was both fascinating and kind of adorable, so the only thing she really needed to worry about was making sure that the cats didn't try to break up the band in any truly horrific way.

Sidon had said that getting the puppies out of the costumes after the parade yesterday could wait for today, since most of them seemed to enjoy being all dressed up and fancy, and the ones that didn't made it very well known and took care of getting out of the costumes themselves, but when Sakaki came in that day for her shift, she was faced with a truly dire conundrum.

Somehow, in the middle of the night, all the costumes had switched from being on the dogs....to the cats.

And after one attempt to relieve a calico from her smart rainbow vest went horribly, horribly wrong, it was decided that, well, apparently, they'd be celebrating cats in costumes today at Furnado Animal Shelter.

And Sakaki was so overwhelmed by the cuteness of it all that she was going to be getting absolutely no work done, but at least the levels of adorable being infused into the air was enough to numb her from the pain.

Yesterday's rainbow was still intact in the sky today, and the weather was pleasant and sunny -- maybe it was like Yang had said, and Pride got the island's stamp of approval. In any case, it was good parade weather. Sunscreen was still a good idea, though.

The parade route this year might be a bit different than it had been previously, starting up at the lighthouse to come down Jones Parkway, then east along Serendipity Place to Loon Drive, then down Unicorn Way to Apocalypse Avenue before turning back up Chimera Court to Mallard Street. It shouldn't be hard to follow the route, either: rainbow bunting was strung up between light poles, and Steph might have gotten a few of the businesses along the way to put flags up, too.

The route would take everyone to the park -- cleaned up after yesterday's festivities, amazingly, but there were still drinks and pastries waiting for everyone in the picnic area afterward. Hey, doing a parade on all those stairs deserved some kind of treat and definitely some rehydration.

There was a rainbow. An actual rainbow arcing up over the island: a Fandom Pride tradition, actually, as Steph found out from one of the NPC workers helping with setup. (Which she wouldn't argue about; that was pretty perfect, if you asked her.)

And the park? It was an explosion of color, with rainbow pennant banners strung up over the picnic table area (where the tablecloths were in all the different colors of the progress Pride flag) and various Pride flags put up pretty much everywhere.

On one side of the picnic area a very large rainbow bounce house/inflatable slide formed the centerpiece of the carnival area, and yes, one side of the slide did dump people out into a rainbow ballpit. A couple of smaller rides and some games were spread out surrounding the slide, as well as all the booths set up by local businesses and groups.

On the other side of the picnic area was the stage, set up for karaoke or any open mic adventures people might care to have; beside the stage was a portable and semi-automated DJ setup, which explained the source of the music playing from the speakers whenever the stage wasn't in use.

Sure, it was pretty humid out, but arguably it wouldn't be Pride if you didn't have to remember to use sunscreen and stay hydrated.

It seemed like a pretty quiet, chill day at the animal shelter that Monday. The light rain throughout the day seemed to put most of the animals in a quiet, lethargic state, with plenty of lounging around and slumbering in adorable puppy piles, and, once Sakaki was able to get over the nearly incapacitating swells of emotion over how adorable it was that one of the kittens was using one of the larger puppies as a mattress, she was able to focus on getting some of her pre-vet course work done in relative peace and quiet.

Because it was so quiet, though, she was able to pick up on a strange, unexpected sound. It was so faint she was pretty sure she'd imagined it at first, or perhaps there was some ad playing on the computer that she hadn't noticed, but, no, it wasn't coming from the computer. It was coming from somewhere in the shelter, and so curious...and definitely a little nervous...she went to go investigate.

The investigation took her quite some time until she finally managed to locate where it was the loudest, and that was over by the amphibian tanks. Frowning, she tilted her head, straining her ears, and seemed to narrow down the general vicinity to one of the tanks in particular, and, peering in...Her eyes widened.

Sitting on a lilypad inside the little pond in his carefully curated by a fellow amphibian was the tiniest frog. And that frog? Was playing a keyboard.

Sakaki's heart may be in need of some medical attention.

Even though she herself was still getting the hang of using a computer and the internet, Sakaki had taken to maintaining a website for the shelter, since she was still better at it than Sidon was, and, really, he was generally often too....ahhh....damp to be handling a lot of electrical equipment for too long.

Besides, she was really enjoying taking pictures of the animals and posting them online with little biographies and information about them and their quirks and personalities and what kind of homes would be good for them and it was quickly becoming one of her favorite parts of the job.

Sure, almost all of the photos in the cat section were clearly taken in moments of crisis, but all the other animals looked pretty good. One puppy in particular, though, was getting an awful lot of attention in the comment section:

"He needs a pool!" the comments were demanding. "Get him a pool!" "This little guy needs a pool!" "Pool!" "Pool!" "Pool!"

And so, clearly, with a sigh, Sakaki realized that she really needed to provide an update.

Believe her, Internet. They had tried!

The park was done up with streamers, strings of lights and all the tacky police and firefighter themed decor you could find at a Party City, so it was maybe not quite as badass as McGarrett had been intending, but he figured that the sections that had been cordoned off for each department to show off would make up for that.

Well. That and the mahi mahi and Longboard beers he'd brought in from Honolulu. He knew a guy.

He was behind one of the grills, shirtless (worrying about burns was for the fire department), bopping his head along to the beat of the zombie band who were thrilled to be playing out in the sunlight and well away and upwind from the food because Steve wasn't stupid. That no one had put sunscreen onto the zombie band would be a Tino problem for the rest of the week.

The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and warm, and the tug-of-war for on-island first responder dominance would be both shirtless and unnecessary. Welcome, everyone!

Someone had dropped off an armadillo over the weekend.

Which meant that half of Sakaki's shift at the shelter that day was spent researching armadillos, and the other half was spent setting up two large plastic kiddie pools that were conveniently in storage, filling one with water because armadillos apparently liked having place to wade around, and then filling the other with sand, because they also liked to dig.

Wait, no, that division of time wasn't quite right.

It was a quarter of her time researching, a quarter of her time setting up the pools, another quarter trying to keep the cats from using the armadillo's digging pool as a litterbox, and the final quarter tending to the wounds unsurprisingly obtained because of said attempts.

Honestly, except for the armadillo part, it really wasn't that unusual of a Monday for her at this point.

The humble staff at Furnado Animal Shelter weren't about to just go and assume that, just because it was World Turtle Day, it was the birthday of every turtle they had in their care, but they would be pretty remiss to completely ignore it. Their approach, while still celebratory, was going to lean more on knowledge and support for turtles around the world, with plenty of literature and information about turtles, taking care of turtles, and what can be done for anyone coming in today.

Sakaki herself was kind of loving it, actually, because she loved learning about animals and she loved turtles, too, so she wanted to make sure she was well-informed and had to remind herself that, no, just because her roommate was gone right now, that did not mean she could use the extra space to fill her room with turtles!

If she even knew that another turtle across the island was getting an adorable little hat right now, though, she would be done for.

Well...it had been nice while it lasted.

But Sakaki very quickly discovered that the congeniality (and in some cases downright friendliness) of the cats toward her was but fleeting. She'd finally gotten some sleep after Saturday, but at what cost? And once she finished bandaging up her hand with familiar practice and making sure the scratch on her cheek was probably bandaged as well, she then sighed and looked wistfully at the cats going about their business, thinking she would easily go back to never sleeping again if only to have but a brief piece of that moment again.

But at least she had had that brief moment, which gave her hope and reassured her that all the pain and bites and scratches and maulings were worth it.

...it shouldn't have, but...there they were.
