It was here! Party night! And Aphrodite was there to greet all her guests at the door of the banquet room.

The party was actually taking place in two rooms, with the buffet dinner in the smaller one and dancing in the larger. Just inside the door of the larger room was the twelve-foot tree, with twinkly crystal lights, but no decoration. This was where people were free to place their own ornament on the tree, showing what holiday they were celebrating.

Also in the dancing room were several tapestries, with the names of several holidays in golden thread, and some symbol of the celebration. These ranged from a tree for Solstice, a menorah for Hanukkah, a nativity scene for Christmas, and several others.

The buffet was grand, with turkey, ham, and roasted lamb with all the trimmings. Near the bar was an actual champagne fountain, with real champagne flowing over the glasses for patrons to fill their own.

The food was ready to be served, the band was warming up for the dancers, and the goddess of love was at the door to welcome you!

(ooc: Party post, up early for SP. Everyone is welcome, and don't forget to bring your holiday ornament! Wait for the OCD is up!)

It was a good thing that no one have come to visit him, even without the timeline dangers. Leto didn't want to think about introducing aunt Alia to this place and having her talk to his teachers. Even Stilgar or Harah would have been a little difficult, and he could imagine endless tirades from Harah about wasting water.

He had ordered a coffee and sat down by a window table.

The area immediately outside the clinic seemed to be a good spot as any. "I'm keeping my promise, River," Karla whispered, as she stepped outside. The sky was threatening, and the ground was still wet from an earlier shower, but the air was clean and fresh and it wasn't raining now.

She wished briefly that she was wearing something nicer or had some music, but that hadn't ever stopped other-her or River from dancing in that other world, and it wasn't going to stop her here. "Shall we?" she asked.

[Both the road and the clinic are open and public places, though Karla's here for one.]

While the students had been completing their last finals, an NPC staff had been hard at work converting one of the empty warehouses into the site of tonight's dance. When the guests arrived this evening, they'd be greeted by a long yellow carpet, leading up to the open glass doors of the warehouse.

Once inside, they would find the space brightly decorated to celebrate the summer season. Gold drapes covered the walls, splashed liberally with glitter to make them sparkle in the low lights of the warehouse. Flowers were placed here and there, not overwhelming but definitely noticeable and fragrant. Images of beaches, palm trees, sunsets, sunrises, hammocks, and other various summer images were being projected on the walls randomly.

A long table consisting of food and drinks was along one wall, providing plenty of sustenance for everyone for their long night of fun. Dark corners could be found here and there, of course. There was music playing and a disco balls projecting light onto the dance floor.

It was time for the summer dance.

Simon had found a table by the window in the Perk, and was now sitting there reading a medical journal, while occasionally throwing a glance out the window. He had ordered a large cup of tea and an apple cake, but that was mostly an excuse to get out of the house for a while.

[Expecting one, but open Perk]

In a way, Simon was relieved that the boy who had surprisingly appeared on his doorstep together with a very young mother, who was also a complete stranger, seemed to take after him rather than his sister. River had been good at taking everything apart and putting it back together in working order, while Malcolm seemed content with reading books. And clearly he could read even if Simon doubted he understood that much.

"More cake?" he asked the boy.

[Open, Simon is here with the kid]

Well, it wasn't really a bad day, was it? The sun was more or less out, and the sky hadn't opened up to rain down on top of anyone, so Reno would call that a win had he the vocal capacity to do so. It was a little chilly, but that was what feathers were for.

And he had a few more days as a chocobo, so he was going to make the best of them.

It had taken a good deal of creative charades before he had managed to communicate what it was he hand in mind to Doji, but after a few rounds of 20 Questions, some clawing at the ground, and a bit of what may or may not be considered interpretative dance, Reno had convinced her to do him a bit of a favor.

Which was why there was a large bird hitched up to a T&C shopping cart, wearing a pair of novelty sunglasses and a sombrero, with a ferret curled up for a snooze in a tote bag that was hanging around his neck. Even Mako needed fresh air now and again.

Shopping cart chocobo rides in the park, anyone?

It was a pretty bloody good thing that a patrol was on the agenda for the day, because it was looking pretty bloody needed. With more excrement in her hair than she would ever like to admit to and having heard some insults that bested some of the drunkest London party girls, Daisy was not even going to harp on Kowalski anymore about going on and just shooting that last one dead, not unless it was to complain about how the next one was so hers.

"What I wouldn't give," she muttered, desperately trying not to breathe through her nose as her back hit the wall and they rested a moment in a small alcove to catch their breath, regain their collectively insulted dignity, and reload their guns before taking care of the next one, "for a trooper's uniform right now. They've at least got those helmets. No poo in the hair and it's got to cut out some of that awful stench, wouldn't it?"

Despite the weather, Simon felt the need to get out of the house. Wrapped in a warm coat he wandered around the park, stopped by the pond to feed the ducks, then sat down on a bench to drink the hot tea he had brought with him. Oddly enough, despite the cold, he enjoyed this and felt happier than he had in a long time.

Sitting by a table with a large cup of tea and an apple cake, Simon was skimming though a magazine he had found. It contained articles on the latest models of computers, and was excessively boring. Finally he pushed it aside, stared out the window and sipped his tea. Some days he really missed Serenity, and this was one of them. Tea and cake at the Perk was the best remedy, he had found, as the quality of food and drink tended to be lacking on the ship a lot of the time.

Mina felt rather foolishly today, as she cradled a cup of tea in her hands. In the name of being sociable, she'd almost let slip important details at Caritas last night.

Details she needed to keep secret.

Perhaps she just should give up on being social. But a recluse would not have any chance to gain valuable information from the town.

A happy medium was needed, apparently. She sipped from her tea, mulling over all these thoughts. She would happily tear herself from her thought if anyone came by, however.

Mary wasn't sure why, but Gunther was pouting a lot today. He was also muttering in German. Maybe she should ask Hoshi if anything happened yesterday.

Her suspicions grew as she watched the gleeful look on Gunther's face as he put up his own menu on the specials board.

Maybe he was spending too much time in this place, Simon thought to himself, but it was beginning to feel like something vaguely similar to a home. He had picked up a glossy magazine of some kind, and tried to interest himself in the fashions available around here, but it didn't quite work. Somehow it was depressing that the only Christmas present he was likely to get was from that annoying landlord.

Twas two days before Christmas and all through the lobby, the decorations were twinkling and Loki was reading like it was a hobby.

Or like he was utterly fucking bored. One or the other.

There was a stack of gifts on the desk, messily wrapped and slapped with bows to cover places where the paper ripped or ran out. There were actual gifts in the boxes but Loki had gotten bored halfway through and forgot what was in which box. That'd make for some interesting reveals whenever he started randomly giving them out to people he tolerated.

...people he liked. Shut up.

For now, the lobby lights were off and he was reading by Christmas lights.

Simon had a cup of tea in front of him and was reading through the newspaper in an attempt to get a better understanding of this time and place. Unfortunately, the specifics required some background knowledge, and apart from some cultural peculiarities, people seemed very much like people, even in another solar system. Perhaps that should be comforting.

This morning he had sent off a short message to Serenity, letting them know he would be staying here over the holidays and wishing everyone a happy Christmas. Hopefully they knew him well enough to know that last part wasn't meant as ironic. He had a feeling he should have sent some more private messages too, but he had refrained from doing so. His sister would have pointed out the error of his decision, but her not being here was his reason for being in the position where he had to send messages in the first place.

Strangely enough, a few Christmas decorations in his hotel room had cheered him up. Simon hadn't considered returning to Serenity for the holiday - if any news about River would turn up it would be here, and that meant he had to stay.

Still, now he smiled to himself as he sipped his tea while skimming through a newspaper at a corner table at the Perk,

Sometime between Monday and today, Loki had gone to the mainland and purchased himself a dart board complete with the sharpest set of darts he could buy. It was now set up behind the desk and he was lazily shooting them, striking the bullseye almost every single time. The times he missed were mostly just fucking flukes when he got distracted by his thoughts, such as they were.

There were currently four darts stuck in the board and he was currently tossing the fifth one up in the air, catching it between two fingers, sharp point down. This would be one of those things mothers would tell their kids not to do, you could cut yourself, take your fucking eye out, stab someone without meaning to.

Loki hadn't stabbed ANYONE accidentally. They'd all been on purpose. Ah, memories.

He tossed the dart one last time, snagging it out of the hair and hurling it towards the board hard and with pinpoint accuracy. After admiring his handiwork for a moment, he retrieved the darts and started flinging them as hard as he could at the dartboard. Maybe he was picturing someone's face there. Maybe not.

He had postponed this long enough, but now Simon sat at the table composing a short letter to Serenity, describing the situation with River. In fact, it turned out extremely short; the words just refused to appear in his mind. Eventually he sighed and pushed the sheet of paper away from him and turned to absentmindedly stir his tea.

Once again, the market crew had gone in and set up booths all over the park, decorating them in cheerful ways and putting down seats for those who might be tired from browsing all the wares. It was a little chilly, so a lot of the booths were wrapped up a little more to shield from any wind that might make it worse. The Monthly Market was open again.

As the sun went down, the twinkling fairy-lights that had been strung around the park took its place as a light source. Not nearly as big, but it was enough to see the food and the dance area by, with the help of some strategically placed torches in the shape of old-fashioned gaslamps. Nor nearly as warm, but there were carefully-controlled braziers here and there to take the nip out of the evening air.

Around the dance area and along the buffet tables there was a proliferation of orange, brown and rust-coloured harvest flowers that might have bordered on excessive, as if someone got rather excited about being offered a job this important, but it was still within the bounds of good taste.

By some act of Fandom, the weather was behaving itself. Any clouds or rain the weather forecasters had blathered about on the news seemed to have skipped over the entirety of Fandom Island. It was a perfect afternoon in October, just the right temperature in which to spend the day outside with pleasant company. Or even relatives.

A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a bright banner announcing the start of a hopefully calm weekend:

Simon was slowly wandering around the Park. Working one day a week at the clinic certainly wasn't enough to keep him busy, and left him with far too much time on his hands. He was beginning to long for a universe that worked in ways he was used to. Getting River out of the Academy hadn't been easy, far from it, but finding her in Kerrigan's universe seemed impossible. He didn't like that at all.

Without really thinking about it, he stopped in front of the pond, watching the ducks.

An early morning walk had done wonders when it came to pulling him out of too much thinking. Simon had to admit that this was a big advantage to living on a planet and not on a ship. And the island was beautiful; he had stopped on the beach and watched the waves roll in and wandered around in the preserve losing all sense of direction.

He had got hungry though, and stopping by the Perk he had ordered a large cup of tea and a blueberry pie. This did nothing to end his good mood.

Jeff was not entirely his usual anxious self today. He was, in fact, reaching a few new levels of anxiety he hadn't previously categorized yet, and it was making him nervous.

Nervous anxiety. It wasn't good.

The cause of this were a letter and some plane tickets he'd gotten from his mum. Cardiff. She wanted him to go to Cardiff. Oh god, there was absolutely no way his life could get any worse than it was at this very moment.

Nana did her part and drooled on his shoes for most of the day.

The sheriff's office was less of a mess than it had been a week ago. Actually, it was rather clean. His inbox was empty safe for a few files that needed to wait until Monday. Roy had worked through the paperwork from home, but his side was slowly healing up and he was determined to sit through a whole shift today.

The report in front of him was meant for Amestris, but Roy was struggling how to word the attack from Kimbley in just the right terms so no one would take offence to it. The island seemed to have returned to that same lull between chaos where you could almost start to believe that it was always like this. And in that quiet, Roy found himself mulling over that feeling of unease that had been creeping up on him since the end of the previous semester. He hadn't even realised it was there until somewhere in the last few days it had suddenly become hard to ignore.

Simon had remembered the Perk from his previous visits. River had recommended the apple cake, and he ordered one, and a cup of tea to go with it, and found himself a table by the window. No sign of his sister, and the worry he felt for her mingled with a little uneasiness about what he had left behind on Serenity. Despite this he had slept surprisingly well - perhaps sea air really helped? He sipped the tea, watching the street outside.

The Student Council had handwavily worked hard to put together a Parents' Weekend that couldn't be forgotten.  And hopefully not because of invasions, animal transformations or strangely shaped fairies.

A good part of the Park was set up with brightly coloured tables and chairs for mingling, relaxing, or simply watching the rare idyllic peace of a small pond.

To the left is the registration table, where the all-important name tag can be received while to the right is tables of delicious food and drink all under the watchful eye of Security.

Above everything waved a banner proclaiming in big blue and gold letters:  WELCOME FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF FANDOM ISLAND!
