By some act of Fandom, the weather was behaving itself. Any clouds or rain the weather forecasters had blathered about on the news seemed to have skipped over the entirety of Fandom Island. It was a perfect afternoon in October, just the right temperature in which to spend the day outside with pleasant company. Or even relatives.

A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a bright banner announcing the start of a hopefully calm weekend:
Welcome to Parents Weekend 2008

Viki had to admit, as she contemplated the scrapbooking materials thoughtfully, that she was unsure if she ought to go to the picnic or not.

It was not, after all, as if she expected anyone to be there for her. The idea of it made her laugh, and shrug. It didn’t bother her, not as such, but at the same time everyone there gathering their family and she...

Well.

Strokes of Genius was Open.

After class, Jen headed down to the pizza parlor to clean up and make sure the place looked fit for customers; with an influx of visitors today, she'd never have forgiven herself for leaving the place messy.

Even if she wasn't sticking around today. There was a picnic to get to, after all, and she was trying to be more social. Sort of.

[OOC: Moddable service ahoy, today! No need to keep the place neat, though. It'd amuse me if Jen had a mess to clean up in the morning because someone had a fight or something.

. . . oooo, the new update of the LiveJournal Addons extension for Firefox gives you a scrolling list of all available journal/comm tags. SHINY.]

Ella didn't walk into the diner today, she all but floated. Her magic book had showed her a letter from Mandy the night before.

Clicky to read the letter )

Mandy was coming to the island, and Ella didn't realize how much she'd missed her until the chance to see her again was dangled before her. She could sing.

Agnes tidied up around the store this morning, because guests were coming to the island, and then started researching disguise spells. Parents Weekend wouldn't mean her parents, she knew -- oh, no, not when Granny Weatherwax could use the opportunity to come and... visit at her. It would be awful, just disastrous, and she couldn't stomach the thought.

Of course, Granny wasn't actually going to be coming for her -- no one was -- and when she figured that out, she'd be feeling even worse.

It had been a long night with some hasty re-decorating to accommodate all the special requests for rooms, including opening up a never-used basement apartment. Still, Mary was in a very good mood as she brought her little sisters into the lobby.

"What do you guys think?" asked Mary.

"Pretty!" said Ashley, going straight for the flower arrangement on the desk. Ariel wasn't as vocal, but she made a beeline for the towel animals with a huge smile on her face.

Gunther, meanwhile, was setting up the buffet and looked a little warily at the two miniature versions of Mary.

Savannah was not at the registration picnic.

She was at work. The place she had told Benicio to meet her at.

The place that in a fit of nerves, she had rearranged again. The organization made sense to her, but probably wouldn't to Sean.

She just hoped that Benicio didn't run into Johnny before talking to her. She had made him swear he would come right to the store after checking in.

Nast's is open, complete with flailing.

So, Parents Weekend or something.

Ray wasn't planning on having any visitors. Way too cold up here for mom, and it wasn't like Stella would be eager to make any housecalls.

So he made some extra coffee and sat down for the day. Surly and all.

Chad knew he'd be opening the store late because of the picnic, and it turns out that he was glad he did, because otherwise, he wouldn't have had a friend to help him at the store today.

"Sugoi, Sado-kun!" Orihime beamed brightly, clutching poor Prince Oscar Pedro to her nearly suffocating breaths, "this is the place where you work? It's so big! And you're going to let me help you today?"

"Of course."

"Ooh, ooh! Can I pick the music?"

"Uhh...sure."

This meant there was no way of predicting what the heck Orihime would be putting into the CD player, but it would be...well, it was sure to be an adventure, that was sure.

"You can help me organize the shelves, too, Inoue-san," he offered, knowing full well he should do something to keep Orihime occupied, if even only for Prince Oscar Pedro's sake.

"Hai!"

Groovy Tunes is open!

Liir was at work, mostly because he had no idea that anyone would be coming for him.

Cookies, tea, cleaning, straightening: it was all done and the store was opened while Liir himself attempted more of that drawing stuff.

It was still a beautiful day and there was still plenty of wonderful food in the Park, welcoming visitors to Fandom Island.

The registration desk was still open and the banner waved in the comfortable breeze announcing the event of the day.
Welcome to Parents Weekend 2008

"It's gonna be boring," Rikku insisted. "Just hanging out while I work. You should go back to the picnic. Or your hotel room! That'd be fun, wouldn't it?"

"You sellin' these guns?" Cid asked, clearly impressed. (And ignoring her suggestions entirely.) He jabbed a finger at one of them. "I want that one. Gimme three of 'em."

"No," Rikku said. "No guns for you."

It was going to be a long day.

Jolee and Tino were stocking plenty of clean glasses behind the bar. This weekend meant family. Family meant drinking. It was a fact of life. It's part of the reason why Jolee never bothered with a family after breaking from the Jedi: he preferred sobriety.

The preparations ended when the door opened and Jolee felt an all-too familiar presence. "I'm sorry, Tino, but it looks like you're on your own tonight," he said, turning to face Revan. "We'll be in the lounge if you need me for anything."

[OOC: I'm totally cheating and making this a mod Tino night. As stated above, Jolee will be in the lounge if anyone wants to talk to him specifically.]

As soon as her player's internet decided to work Jenny dashed into Pixie Dust and flipped the sign to 'Open,' then scribbled a notice and stuck it in the window.

Welcome, Parents!
1/2 Off Old People Clothes!

There. That should do it.

It wasn't that he was desperately needed in the office today, but considering the kind of people that were already on the island, Cable felt it might be a good precaution to make sure he was available in case he was actually needed.

You know, for some kind of emergency.

The staff was still dealing with the fact the new mayor kept guns in the office.

[ open! ]

The Gig, Friday

[identity profile] waytoomanynames.livejournal.com
There were more people on the island, the sparrows told Rosie. People's families had come to visit. Knowing that made her miss her own family, waking a dull ache in her heart.

So,oOnce she'd fed the horses and done all those chores that The Gig required, she retreated to the smithy, hammering and refolding the bat'leth. It didn't look, right then, all that much like a bat'leth. But it was in one piece again; shape would come later.

[ooc: Smithy doors are as open as the post. I have the plaaaaaague, so expect slow from me.]
