Luke's Diner, Friday, 10/24

Ella didn't walk into the diner today, she all but floated. Her magic book had showed her a letter from Mandy the night before.

My dearest Ella,

Your school sent out an invitation to Parent's Weekend to your father. I assumed that you wouldn't mind if it didn't fall into his hands. Since there is no problem with a guardian arriving for you, I'm looking forward to seeing you very soon.

Mandy was coming to the island, and Ella didn't realize how much she'd missed her until the chance to see her again was dangled before her. She could sing.

After a quick tour of the town from Dick, Bruce thought he should get some food. If anyone asked, it was a complete coincidence that he was going to the diner where Dick's girlfriend worked. "Good afternoon," he said as he took a seat at the counter.

"Good afternoon!" Ella burbled in return, completely innocent as to who the man might be. "Can I get you anything?"

"I certainly hope so," Bruce joked. "How is the venison stew?"

"I really like it," Ella replied. "It's a recipe from home I gave the cooks. Not quite as good as what I'd get there, but things never are."

"Not a problem," Ella said, and went into the kitchen for a moment before returning with a steaming bowl of stew, with hearty bread on the side and a glass of water. "Are you new in town, or here to visit?"

"I'm just here for the weekend," Bruce said. "I'm visiting Dick Grayson. Do you happen to know him?"

"Good afternoon," Ella greeted the man. "Can I get you something?"

"A cheeseburger and a beer please." Tully said. "And I've hard you have a community bulletin board?"

Ella nodded. "It's back on that wall," she said, pointing. "Anyone can use it. I can get you the cheeseburger, but I'm afraid we don't serve beer here. Would a soda or iced tea do?"

"It'll be out in a moment," Ella said, putting the revised order in at the window. "So are you new in town, or visiting someone?"

Mandy knew from the letters that she had received that Ella worked at the diner on Friday's, so instead of trying to find her at the picnic, she headed straight for Luke's. "Ella. You look well." She said, as she sat down and waited for the girl to notice her.

"Mandy!" Ella exclaimed, beaming and all but launching herself across the counter for a hug. "Oh, I'm so happy you came, and not Father or Dame Olga. It's been too long since I saw you outside the book."

Mandy returned the hug and then stood Ella at arm's reach to take a good look at her. "Well, I couldn't have just anyone visiting you, could I?" She studied the girl and nodded. "You've been taking care of yourself."

"I've been trying to," Ella said, still smiling. "They don't have language classes, but I'm studying things that seem useful, and I'm a cheerleader -- it's a kind of dancing for school spirit. And I went riding last week!"

"With a young man?" Mandy asked completely innocently. "You'll have to introduce me to all of your teachers, of course."

"Actually it was just me," Ella said. "I should take Dick, though. And you'd like my teachers, I think. Minsc is teaching us about the care of magical creatures, though he couldn't believe we keep Apple as a pet."
