Ella was at the diner early that day, in a peculiarly thoughtful mood. Classes were over for the year, and she'd be home for her break soon.

She stood at the counter, wiping it again and again as her thoughts enveloped her.

It's not a wonderful curse. )

When Ella came to again, she realized she'd been wiping the counter for so long that it was almost wearing thin. She shook off her own silliness and went to fix a mug of tea.

Jaina was having the start of a very bad night. Not that she knew it right now.

No, she was just walking out into the powdered sugar, standing at the perfect place to gaze out upon the pond behind her at that camera angle, gazing out to where the sunset would have been if it hadn't already happened. Though it should be noted that the moonlight still illuminated her features perfectly.

"Neeeeeeeeeeeeeear, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar, whereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeveeeeeeeer you aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare..."

[OPEN. I've had a bad day month which has culminated in a dinner of Oreo cookies dipped in boozed up egg nog. If you don't get sang at, I will have to send other girls. And if I still need happy, who knows, maybe Buffy will end up as Whitney Houston. YOU DON'T KNOW.]

Ella had tried to lure the tiny horses on the diner roof down with hay and lumps of sugar, but hadn't met with any success. She was still pouting about that failure as she took her station behind the counter, and she made the chefs cook things that the horses would like, just in case they changed their minds.

Specials
Oatmeal
Carrot-Ginger Soup
Applesauce Muffins

Achoo! Ella sneezed wetly into a handkerchief as she opened the diner. She felt miserable.

"I have the plague," she informed the kitchen staff. "I'm staying out front today and not touching the food.

None of them seemed inclined to argue the point.

Ella slumped behind the counter, sipping from a mug of tea and not going near the food. It would be a long shift.

Specials
Salmon with Mango Salsa
Broccoli-Cheddar Quiche
Black Forest Cake

The Wokling came to work with Ella today.

That meant she spent a very cursory amount of time checking on things in the kitchen -- an expedition laced with "No, Furball, that's hot" -- and the rest of her shift playing with the baby at the counter. For a teddy bear, it was getting pretty good at peekaboo.

The diner was open.

Specials
Turkey Reuben
Spicy Onion Rings
Lemon Meringue Pie

Ella had a craving for waffles as she entered the diner.

The nice thing about working around food was, you got what you wanted, and Ella was soon happily enjoying a second breakfast.

If she went for a third one, she'd get the kind with ice cream and call it dessert.

Luke's was open.

Specials
Belgian Waffles
Tex Mex Savory Waffles
Bittersweet Chocolate Waffles with Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Ella was oblivious to Halloween, though she did feel oddly disconcerted by the balloon giraffe she had gotten in the park. As such, she went through her normal morning routine in the diner then settled at the counter with a novel.

The kitchen staff decided she was dressed as Girl Who Doesn't Get Halloween.

Specials
Curried Pumpkin Soup
Pumpkin Ravioli with Sage Butter
Pumpkin Cake

As the sun went down, the twinkling fairy-lights that had been strung around the park took its place as a light source. Not nearly as big, but it was enough to see the food and the dance area by, with the help of some strategically placed torches in the shape of old-fashioned gaslamps. Nor nearly as warm, but there were carefully-controlled braziers here and there to take the nip out of the evening air.

Around the dance area and along the buffet tables there was a proliferation of orange, brown and rust-coloured harvest flowers that might have bordered on excessive, as if someone got rather excited about being offered a job this important, but it was still within the bounds of good taste.

[OCD is now up. Have fun!]

Ella didn't walk into the diner today, she all but floated. Her magic book had showed her a letter from Mandy the night before.

Mandy was coming to the island, and Ella didn't realize how much she'd missed her until the chance to see her again was dangled before her. She could sing.

After a relatively quiet week, Ella was grateful to have the structure of work today and a slumber party to look forward to tomorrow. She spent her shift trying to get all the diner's silverware so clean she could see her reflection in them.

She had a strange sense of fun sometimes.

Angela and her large mug of coffee were at a window table in the Perk.

Her excess enthusiasm from homecoming had been mildly dampened thanks to spending a large portion of yesterday feeling decidedly queasy. Stupid potent spiked punch.

Still, she was feeling much better today and was making the most of that by actually leaving her room. After listening to radio, she just had to come out an assess the truth behind the insanity. So far, it was a bit of a let down. Shame.

[[ooc: Angela is still just Angela, however if anyone wants to be drama-y at her you just know I'll love it.]]

Charles Bass was brooding beautifully again. His scarf and expensive black coat were billowing in a soft breeze that seemed to follow him everywhere. Last night's impromptu lap dance had been fun but it distracted him from his work. His father had ordered him to get rid of the Skywalkers and so far he had done nothing to do so. He blamed John Sheppard for his delay. Yes, that evil scarf-stealing, pointy haired bastard. This was all his fault.

Just the thought of John made Charles seethe.

Ella would have been grumbly about missing most of the carnival in favor of work -- she was going to take a long lunch break to look around, anyhow -- but she set that aside in favor of a different irritation when she got to the diner.

"Why is everything covered with bacon?"

The kitchen staff just shrugged.

Ella sighed and set to gathering the bacon off the tables, placing it on enormous platters and hoping the store's fans would blow the scent into the street and draw in customers.

The kitchen staff were singing today. Not just pop songs -- they were carolling "does anyone know where the onions are?" and scatting "watch out, the pan is ho-ho-hooooooooot."

When they started rapping about how the banana cream pie was way too fly, Ella decided she'd had enough and would stay in the front of the diner for the rest of her shift.

Specials

Cheesey garlic bread
Toffee banana cream pie

Ella had taken off her shirt on the air last night. Ella kind of wanted to die. The fact it was radio, so people heard but did not see her topless state, had kind of gotten lost in her mortification. She simply didn't think it could be worse.

Therefore Ella was hiding, very very stealthily spending her shift in the kitchen. She would come out if clients needed her, but she'd tucked her hair up under a ballcap and was wearing stealthy dark sunglasses.

The kitchen staff had decided to cook a western feast to cheer her up.

Luke's Diner was open.

When Robin came into work, feeling all attractive and swaggery and boobless, she found a very disgruntled young woman behind the bar.

When she was done laughing, she assured him she'd be calling him Tina all night, and then wrote up a little sign.

Or free if you tell who you are right away, thanks

And with that, she went back to admiring her own reflection in a back of a spoon.

Things were a little chaotic at the diner today. Apparently yesterday's discussion about the lack of olives had lead to a fight between a few members of the kitchen staff about whether black olives or green olives were superior, and then someone else had chimed in on the vital pit-or-no-pit issue, and somehow this lead to the shipment of olives that arrived this morning being commandeered to prove someone's point -- and ultimately dumped all over the kitchen floor.

Ella carefully picked her way to the counter. She didn't even like olives, but some specials to get them all used up and out of the kitchen again seemed like the best plan.

The diner was open.

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

[ooc: OCD up! Party down!]

Ella rushed to the diner early, wanting to make up for her missed shift the week before. She'd been a little confused about days, with no classes and the time lost to being a squirrel, but that wouldn't happen again.

Her hopes for a quiet shift were quickly dashed by the appearance of a small, furry black-and-white creature who dragged himself onto the stool with focused effort. "Hey, byooootiful," he slurred. "Howsabout some black coffee and .... I'm gonna hurl. Be right back." The skunk clambered off the stool, and Ella could hear retching from outside before he reentered with great drunken dignity. "Riiiight. Bla' coffee an' somethin' with lotsa grease."

"A ham and cheese omelet?" Ella offered from a safe distance.

"I li' that," the skunk said. "You're smar'. I'm gonna tell allllll my friends 'bout this place." He pulled out a cell phone, from where Ella didn't want to ponder, and started dialing.

Which was how Ella came to spend her shift making omelets and chicken wings for drunken skunks.

Amateratsu and Issun were in a bit of a fix. This place was using a totally different kind of money. And to pay for the inn they were staying at, they needed to figure out a way to earn some "dollars". Issun was in no hurry of course, even though Ammy made the task seem urgent. She was hoping they'd see some villagers to ask about money. They took up a post in a nice green place with paths, hoping to come upon someone helpful. The wolf proceeded to lounge next to the park bench, thinking this might be a good spot to find people.

It was a slightly disgruntled Ella who stood behind the diner's counter today. She wasn't entirely used to pants, and Bermuda shorts were even worse. And, of course, going to work meant detouring past the beach, through the science classrooms, and around the pond in the park.

At least the shorts were more practical in the kitchen than her skirts.

The Diner was open.

After her flailing over a bikini, the day was too chilly for one anyhow, so Ella was clad in a sundress and light cardigan as she sat on a rock, waiting for her date. The swimsuit was stowed in her bag alongside a sack of cookies and oranges, just in case the weather changed or she changed her mind.

She fidgeted a little as she sat there, unable to decide if she was nervous but excited or excited but nervous.

Pixie Dust, Saturday

It was a hungover Toby that opened Pixie Dust today.

God, the sun sucked so hardcore. Rather than doing something productive, he sat on top of the counter, sipping a V8 and trying to remember if he'd actually gotten anywhere with Tino or not. If he had, it was fanfreakingtastic. If not, he was so trying again.

Regardless, Pixie Dust was open for business.

Ella was bored to be at work today. Bored bored bored. Even after she was done with her prep work, she kept wandering to the windows and stretching her neck toward the ocean, wishing she were at the beach.

Eventually, she settled on the stool behind the counter with the Bitterwoman volume she'd gotten at the library. Bitterwoman had been kidnapped by the Pride of Evil, and had to depend on that drip, Trevor, to rescue her.

Pirates. Pretty frickin' sweet. Seriously, Fandom never got old.

Since his entire wardrobe (which, yes, still consisted almost entirely of identical blue tunics) had transformed into pirate clothes yesterday, Sokka was dressed like a pirate. And... kinda liking it, actually.

He spent some time trying on some of the pirate clothes on the racks in the store, until he found some that he liked, and then packed them all into a cardboard box. After taping the box shut, he wrote on it in big letters "DEAR FANDOM: PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THESE BACK TO NORMAL" and wrapped it in aluminum foil.

Ella should have been cheerful as she opened the diner. She'd had a very nice time with Dick the night before, and one of the songs they'd sung as a duet was still going through her head. The whole thing made her a little floaty.

However. There was rain as she walked to work. Purple rain. So not only had her hair frizzed up in a desperate attempt to escape its braid, but she was a bit, well, grape-tinged.

Grumbling, she changed into a spare uniform in the back of the restaurant before preparing for the day.

Having been insulted by...pirates on her way to the bar (Robin didn't know. They were really creative, though), Robin wasn't her normal, bubbly and friendly self.

Okay, so...basically, non-bubbly was her default, but still.

She was running a special on rum-based drinks, however, to temper this and in honor of their current location.

[I hate having to do this, but a) I'm still kind of loopy from ye olde teeth yanking and have been dozing off and on all day, and b) I have to interview someone to take over my lease (A WINNING COMBINATION, I KNOW. "Hi, so here's the apartme..zzzzzzzzzz") so I'm going to have a touch of the SP/AFK tonight. I should be able to pick up pings if you don't mind being patient, as I'm getting some caffeine in me, but at the very least, expect about 40 minutes of total, definite AFK while I commute to and fro my apartment. Holy crap, this OOC note is longer than the actual post. Sigh. Anyway: mod Tino for speedy service.]

When you had money and were creative you could make parties happen anywhere. Blair had both money and creativity in spades, and thus her party was born.

It was an Antarctic theme so there was ice aplenty. Blocks of it were used to make tables and chairs (with blankets and cushions on them - Blair would suffer for fabulousness but there was no reason to willingly give yourself frostbite). Slabs of ice made up the bar and the tables for food. Carefully placed lights helped to show off what was available. All in all the end effect was something not unlike this. The only thing that wasn't as icy was the floor, because much though Blair would find it amusing to watch people fall down, it ran the risk of her pretty decorations being destroyed.

There was dance music playing and a space for dancing if anyone was inclined. There were plenty of extra blankets for anyone who hadn't dressed warmly enough to avoid a chill, or just wanted an excuse to cuddle. There were also tables set up in booth-like formations for those who wanted to sit and chat without being in the middle of the flow. One table had its own bar, extra thick and comfy pillows on the chairs, and luxurious blankets to help stay warm. No prize for guessing that this was the table Blair had claimed.

Someone, possibly the same person who had left a teen fashion magazine for Jenny to find, had left one in Ella's common room as well. Ella had no idea the fourth was a holiday, until the grumbling of the kitchen staff gave her a good idea.

"Give us the day off," the dishwasher demanded.

"Um. All right," Ella said, only a little nervous. If it was a holiday, there shouldn't be too many customers ... right? And most of the food wasn't that hard to cook; she could manage on her own.

Absolutely.

After the staff left, she finished the prep work and settled in behind the counter. The diner seemed very quiet.

Superstitions about Friday the 13th were unknown in Kyrria, but that didn't mean the day hadn't attacked Ella. By the time she took her spot behind the counter, she had already woken up 15 minutes late, tripped coming down the dorm stairs, bruised her knee and skinned her palm, and discovered the blouse she wore to work had a lovely split in the underarm seam.

And then the dishwasher she didn't like ordered her to scrub out all the pots used the night before. Her sore palm smelled, wretchedly, of garlic.

It was a rather frazzled Ella who put together the specials board and then settled behind the counter to work on a letter to Prince Char.

It had been a quiet week, and Ella was thoughtful as she let herself into the diner on time and made sure everything was ready for the day of service, then helped herself to a breakfast of a cinnamon roll and tea.

Alice still had the morning's meditation practice on her mind as she opened Groovy Tunes. You might notice her slowly moving through the motions as she wandered through the racks.

As for today's musical discovery, this Bjork seemed to pronounce words strangely, but the oddness seemed in tune with Alice's own mood.

Ella arrived early for her first shift, dressed in a plain blouse and skirt and with her hair neatly bound back. Mandy would envy some of this equipment; she'd have to write her a letter about it.

After exploring (and chopping half a bag of onions at a cook's command), Ella took her place behind the counter, straightened the pie case just so, and settled in for her first day at work.

Lacey? Still painting. Still slapping the paint-covered brush angrily against the wall. Still mad about what the radio was reporting about her.
