Turtle & Canary, Wednesday, 7/30

Amber was tired and sore when she came into work, and not just from the play last evening, but from her learning self-defense from Murdock. Muscles ached that she never knew she had.

Apu was behind the counter while Amber curled up in a lounge chair in the camping section of the store. What? Demonstration was a key quality to successful selling. Not like anyone would want to go camping, but it was the idea, right?

She's pretending to camp. Shh.

Ella came in after her classes and in a bit of a rush, In her fluster of the last few days, she had forgotten to pick up her new pet.

"Hello?" she called. "Is there a parrot around anywhere?"

A parrot? Why yes, yes there was. Amber sat up, shoved the dark glasses she was wearing back off her nose, and looked over at the sleeping caged creature.

"Over here!" she called out as she stood, waving her hand in the air.

Ella rushed over. "I hope it's not been here long," she said, looking at the bird. "It ... doesn't seem terribly lively, does it? Was it upset?"

Amber raised a brow, leaned over and tapped the cage. A parrot eye popped open. "Nah, it was just cat-nappin'," she grinned. "It wasn't upset, I fed it a bit of fruit and then like me, we both sort of fell asleep. It's a beautiful parrot. You have a name picked out yet?"

The bird squawked a little and settled its head back under a wing. "Maybe," Ella said, inspecting it. "My roommate's not from here, so I might give it a name in her language, kind of as a thank you. I know 'Pento' is birdy."

"He is handsome, isn't he? Wait, is it a he?"

"Ah, that's a nice gesture," Amber agreed with a nod. "And hmm," she peered over at the bird. "I... really don't know."

Ella looked kerflummuxed by this for a moment, then set her jaw. "Well, I'll just have to find out," she declared. "Let me just pay for him and the cage and some food. I'm sure he wants to get home."

Amber wondered how one could tell a male from a female. Not like she tried to look or anything. She started for the counter but paused, turning back to look at Ella. "Do you know where the food aisle is? Oh, and by the way, I'm Amber Atkins," she grinned. "I don't think I've met you before."

"I don't know where the food is," Ella said sheepishly. "Could you show me?"

She bobbed a half-curtsy. "I'm Ella. I was new in May, and I'm not sure I've met you either."

"Of course I could!" she declared brightly. "It's just a few aisles over this way..."

Oooh, a cursty! How nice. Amber thought Ella to be from very far away and was immediately curious. "You have such a pretty name, Ella. Where are you from?" She asked as she began to walk, assuming Ella would follow.

"Thank you," Ella said, following along. "It's short for Eleanor -- I was named for my mother. I'm not sure I've met an Amber before."

"And I'm from Frell, in Kyrria, but don't worry about it. No one here has ever heard of it." She sounded very certain on this point.

"Eleanor is very nice too, so old soundin'. Not that your ma is old, I'm just sayin'. My name is very ordinary, normal. I don't believe I was named after anyone," she chatted as she rounded the pet food aisle.

"Oh, I've not heard of it but you've probably never heard of Mount Rose, Minnesota either, where I'm from. That's the neat thing about Fandom; gettin' to learn where everyone is from. Now. You know parrots have a special diet, right?" Amber asked, coming to a standstill in front of the parrot food. And she only knew this by having cleaned this aisle so many times, straightening the various canned and bagged goods.

Amber could certainly talk, and Ella was content to let her, making sympathetic noises in the appropriate places. "I had barely heard of Minnesota," she said. "But I did know about the special diet! It was in the book I got at the library."

Pento (if that stayed his-or-her name) let out an irritated squawk and repeated, "Minn'sota. Book. Awk."

"Oh, Amber, he's already talking," Ella grinned in delight. "I think I'll take that food." She pointed to the container with the prettiest packaging.

Amber did ramble, oh yes. "Oh good!" she grinned.

"Eee! How cute, Ella. You'll get him or her, to talk easily and won't that be fun?" She took the container of food and began to head towards the counter where she could ring her up.

"Hopefully it won't keep you up at night," she giggled. "If it learns snorin' noises, that just might be funny."

"I'll blame it on Rikku, if it does," Ella giggled, pleased with her new pet. "That's why I wanted a parrot, you know, to teach it to talk. I'm glad this one has a gift."

Pento's contribution was to look smug. he really was the best parrot in the world, yes.

"I've thought about a pet, but not sure what I would want," she admitted with a wry smirk. "Maybe a puppy. I don't know. The idea of teachin' a pet to talk sure is intriguing." Amber told Ella the amount and bagged up the food for her.

"I thought of it because I always loved seeing the parrots at home," Ella said. "The shopkeeper would teach them to say things in all sorts of languages, and I thought it would be wonderful to have one all my own. Our housekeeper had one, at home, but it only said a few rude things."

"Puppies are cute, though."

"A parrot always reminds me of a far off tropical place," Amber said. "That or the zoo," she laughed. "I think they are so beautiful and you're lucky to have one. I guess it's not too nice to teach one rude comments but I bet they learn words more by mimicking, yah? You could accidentally say 'damn' one time and then your bird will say it all the time." 'Course Amber thought that might be kind of funny. "Not sayin' that that will happen. You know... just sayin'."

"It happened with Mandy's," Ella said, handing Amber the money for the bird and supplies. "The shopkeeper she bought it from thought it would be funny for the bird to say 'Kiss my ... er, bottom' in another language. It took us months to figure out."

Amber cracked up laughing. "Oh how funny!"

Seriously, who wouldn't think that was funny? Her ma would love a bird like that but oh man, the people that would not come around because of what it learned to say. Ma dropped the F-bomb left and right.

Yeah, her ma didn't need a parrot.

"So that's it, Ella. I really hope you enjoy your bird and maybe I could stop by to see it sometime? See how it's doin'?"

It was probably more funny if you weren't cursed to try to obey the thing. Mandy had to tell Ella, "Don't listen to Choch," a dozen times.

Still. She could see the funny side of it, and so she smiled. "Of course you could!" she burbled. "I'm in room 308, and I'm there a lot."

"Great! I will come by then and I'm in 409 if you ever find yourself on that floor and just care to say hey. I'm there a lot myself," she smiled.

Ella grinned. "I'll stop by," she promised, then, awkwardly balancing the bird over one arm and her bag over the other, left the store.

Marco had spent a week as a vending machine, so he was hoping that Turtle would be around for his favorite hobby of "bother Turtle". However, he was happy to see Amber there as well. "Hey!" He said cheerfully.

"Hi, Marco! Haven't seen you in forever. How are you?"

"Human!" Marco said, still cheerfully. "You?"

"Human too!" she giggled.

"What have you been lately?"

"A vending machine - again." Marco sighed dramatically. "There's no justice in the world."

"Well, I don't know about that. Do you give away free pop?"

Marco paused before replying. "NO."

"Just checkin'," she grinned, teasing him. "Free pop would totally be worth you bein' vendin' machine, yah you betcha."

"I like my kidneys!" Marco's brain was sometimes a strange place to be.

Amber cocked her head, narrowed her eyes. "Oh, okay then. I..." her eyes kind of swept over him, "...wasn't thinkin' clearly about your body parts."

Marco's brain popped for a second. "Yeah, body parts. Good on me. Er...inside me."

"Right. No loose body parts. Or, I guess, givin' them away because wow, just think what you might be missin' when you became human agaom," she snickered, trying to wrap her brain around that.

"So, uh, how've you been otherwise?"

"Up until my brain tried to figure out how I would function without ... body parts? Good. You?"

"Yah, right, so." Amber wouldn't dwell. "Good. Busy. What with the play and all and you should come see it, Marco!"

"There's a play?"

"Titus Andronicus," she said proudly. "Openin' night was last night but we are goin' to have four more performances so if you don't turn into a vendin' machine again, you can come watch! I have to tell you, it's full of all kinds of gore."

"Gore? Why didn't you say so?" Marco grinned. "I'll be in the first row."

"There's rape and cannibalism too," she said, twisting her lips. "Mutilation... but yah, come and watch us!"
