Summer had gotten ahead of Apu a little bit and saw what days he might be celebrating and seized an opportunity to jump on at least one holiday for herself. Which meant that Turtle & Canary was getting a new temporary friend, because it was Take Your Cat to Work Day, and so Pancakes was definitely coming with her.

Of course, Summer did realize there was a problem with this whole plan the moment Pancakes caught sight of the canary, which was definitely on Summer. But sometimes, you know, you just forgot about those guys, you know?

She was keeping an eye on them both between her inventory and orders, and feeling glad that the holiday Apu was leaning into today was Fresh Veggie Day, which was normal and lead to useful discounts on produce...as long as you ignored that Apu was wearing a broccoli costume, anyway.

Summer was definitely ignoring the broccoli costume.

Batter up! It was World Softball Day, and of course Turtle & Canary was celebrating! Prompto didn't know much about softball (or most sports, really, save for football, and that he mostly knew about because of the Puppy Bowl), but he did think what Apu had set up today was really fun and cute! He'd set up a softball diamond on the floor with the Squishy machine as home base, there were sales on anything baseball related, and he'd even gotten jerseys and caps for the staff!

Even Prompto!

It was going to take some doing to figure out how to set the cap on his head without messing up his hair too much, but once he got it, it was going to be selfie city, especially with the cheese panda, who was looking so great in his own oversize jersey, and now he was just going to have to try really hard to not idly munch on some of the peanuts and Cracker Jacks being offered with each purchase.

For a brief moment, Summer was slightly thrown off by the cheese panda wearing a nametag. Not only that, but also what the nametag actually said.

"Do not," she said firmly, "tell me that this whole time, your name has been Earl."

Earl the Cheese Panda? Ridiculous. No. She refused to believe it.

Thankfully, her doubt proved to be well-founded, because he was only Earl for National Earl Day. Apu was also wearing a nametag that said Earl, and wouldn't you know it, he also had one for Summer.

"....fine," she said, taking it with a sigh and only because he'd made it very pink and sparkly and so it was pretty funny, actually.

"Oh! National Yo-Yo Day? Sweet!"

Prompto was stoked to come into the store for his shift that day and see what Apu had set up. Bright and colorful yo-yos on display and on sale, with a small table of a few of them so that people could just sort of play around with them and give them a try. He went straight for a yellow one, of course, grinning broadly as he tossed it in his hands a little before starting to pull off a few little tricks here and there.

He was a gunslinger! He was good with his hands! Also there were a lot of idle hours during the Long Night, and he had trouble staying still a lot of the times so it gave him something to do with his hands while also maybe trying to impress peop--

"Hey," the trick he was currently trying to do fell short as, all of a sudden, Apu bustled over, shoulder-checked him, and started taking down the display. "Wait, what's going..."

He watched as Apu replaced all the yo-yo stuff with gardening stuff, and he pouted.

"That's just cold, dude," he said, sighing, and feeling a little hurt, too, even though he felt like he shouldn't. But he felt like he and Apu had made progress, and now he was changing up the whole holiday just because Prompto was enthusiastic about the first one.

Whatever. It was fine. He was here to work, anyway, not just play with yo-yos, and so now he was going to go slink over to the register and definitely not pout while still playing with his yo-yo.

Memorial Day Sales? At Turtle & Canary? Please. Apu would never!

Especially not when it was also World Redhead Day! Sorry about it, those who died in service to this country, Apu had a boss to suck up to!

"Awwww!"

And, clearly, it was working. She was greeted with confetti and cake when she came in that day, and any and all redheads would be receiving discounts that day, and anyone not of a natural ginger distinction could still get those discounts by heaping copious amounts of praise onto the store's own brilliant flame-haired manager.

His idea! Not hers! But she didn't think anyone would believe her if she said that so she didn't even bother with the distinction.

Summer was frowning a little when she came into the store, although she wasn't terribly surprised. According to the internet, today wasn't very great for days to choose to celebrate, so she knew she was going to be dealing with something less than stellar when she came into the store that morning. She should have known that World IBD Day was absolutely what Apu would lean into.

And she supposed pamphlets and information about it was nice, even if she felt that was more trained toward the clinic, and, okay, food that were better for someone dealing with it being featured and marked down was nice, too, but once he started bringing in bathroom accessories.

"I just don't know, Apu," Summer said. "This all seems like kind of a shitty idea."

And now Apu was offended.

"Okay!" she allowed. "Maybe it was a bad choice of words! So sue me."

She might be worried he would actually consider it, but, as far as she knew, there was no National Lawsuit Day. And her opinions on this matter would be only justified once she saw one of the Squishy flavors for the day.

Today was National Limerick Day and Apu wanted to run a contest: submit an original limerick about Fandom Island or anything Fandom Island inspired, and the best one was going to win a hefty gift card for the store, and Summer didn't really figure anyone would have much to offer or want to go through the trouble, so of course she was fine with it. Especially since, if anyone did feel so inspired after all, it would be pretty entertaining to see what they came up with.

Apu had even offered his own contribution:

Which, really, rhyming island with 'end 'em' and 'buy them' was kind of a stretch, but Summer did always appreciate a good F-bomb. There was a good chance that panda was working on one, too, but was getting a little stuck on what he wanted to use to rhyme with gouda.

Prompto was greeted with a confetti-like shower of buttons when he walked in through the door, except the nice thing about confetti was that it was, you know, not hard like buttons were and so he was just going to give a very disapproving look at Apu because not cool, bro. He bruised easily!

But that wasn't all! The button greeting was due to it apparently being Hooray for Buttons Day! So if you needed buttons, Turtle & Canary had them! And marked down, too! It was a Button Bonanza! Also, did you have buttons on your clothes? It was an additional percentage off of your purchase that day for every button you had.

"So not only are you assaulting me with buttons today," Prompto complained, "but now you're also making me do math??"

Way to make Prompto question every attempt to ever try to make friends with you, Apu!

Was Apu celebrating Cinco de Mayo today? No. Of course not. That would actually make sense.

He was, instead, celebrating Hug a Shed and Take a Selfie Day.

Yes, that's right. Hug a Shed and Take a Selfie Day.

Which meant that, if you showed off a picture of yourself hugging a shed, or even just a selfie with a shed (the hug was being assumed), then you'd get 25% off of your purchases that day.

Summer could only shake her head. "Sometimes," she stated, "I hate it here."

('Here' being the store that she owned, not the island as a whole, omggggg, but also, well...)

And that wasn't just because she was a little bitter over the fact that she didn't already have a shed selfie and would apparently now need to go and get one, because she hated not being able to just immediately answer to some ridiculous thing presented to her. Really!

Originally, Prompto hadn't been planning on leaving work early to get ready for the weekend camping trip with the guys. But that was before he came in and learned that it was International Tuba Day, and you know what? Taking a nice half-day was sounding pretty good right about now.

It definitely sounded better than Apu's attempts to play the instrument, which Prompto felt deserved better than this abuse, especially on a day that was supposed to be celebrating it.

Until then, there were always earplugs and picking up a few last minute supplies to bring with him, and potentially conspiring with the panda to stuff that thing with cheese when Apu wasn't looking.

A day like National Superhero Day probably hit a little differently in a place like Fandom than most places (though certainly not all!) around the multiverse. Mostly because, like, half the population of this island could probably be considered a superhero in some way, shape, or form.

So, naturally, Apu would want to celebrate that on the day for celebrating it, and Summer was definitely not going to complain because some of her favorite people were, in fact, super heroes.

There was a bit of legalize on how one might define a superhero, of course, with fine print and everything, but Apu was most likely to hold people to that distinction far more than Summer, who was willing to just, you know, go on vibes or convincing arguments. But no matter how they managed to define it, all Superheros were getting a nice 25% off their purchases to day, so maybe a good time to stock up on all your superhero needs!

Unless that need included duct tape. Sorry!

Prompto had been working ~~here the whole time~~ on improving his relationship with Apu, and one of the best avenues for that, he felt, was to get on board with the whole random holiday thing (sorry, Summer!). And while it would have been great to have actual penguins in to celebrate World Penguin Day, they didn't have a good resource for that, not even through Furnado. So Prompto made a bid for the next best thing:

He and Apu had coordinated to wear tuxedos to work today.

(The cheese panda didn't need to, he was already black and white! But he did throw on a cunning little bowtie).

They were also putting any penguin themed or branded items on sale and in a display, so he was definitely grabbing a penguin plushie for Noctra, and he was loading up on Kid Cuisine (sorry, Ignis!).

Summer checked the internet every week before coming in to work now, and she was glad she did, because what she was afraid of happening today was, in fact, happening today.

And she was going to nip it in the bud right away, marching into the office and to the sound system and immediately killing the music.

When she went back out into the store, Apu, inexplicably wearing a track suit, pouted at her, but she was ready for that, too.

"No," she said. "Absolutely not. Just like crumbs will get us ants, Dance Marathon Day will get us Stewarts."

And she'd been blissfully free from that guy lately, and hoped to keep it that way!

Summer sure liked to complain a lot about Apu and his random holidays, but honestly? Prompto found a lot of them to be pretty fun and interesting, and he was especially enjoying today, because it was Respect Your Cat Day, which meant great extra discounts on all things kitty related in the store! And also...

Oh. Oh. Prompto was just going to maybe stealthily pocket a couple of those and pretend he had no idea what that had to do with anything.

When Summer came into the store that day,things were set up as if for a birthday party, streamers and balloons and generic banners everywhere, and the cheese panda was on charge of giving people free slices of cake (just regular old birthday cake, not even cheesecake!) and ice cream,and Summer was....suspicious.

"Who's birthday is it?" she asked, pulling out her phone to see which obscure historical figure it may have been, and if this was a new thing Apu was doing to sort of move away from his whole random holiday deal.

But Apu just shrugged and took a bite of his cake and acted like you really shouldn't just question random birthday events.

"....why do I feel like this always happens around this time of year?" Summer then wondered, but then she was being handed cake, and so she just shrugged and decided not to question it either.

Summer's biggest fear about what sort of random holiday Apu would be leaning into was confirmed once she walked into through the door and saw him with exactly what she dreaded to see.

"No," she said firmly, as he took a deep breath but before he could let it out to blow through the bagpipes.

He deflated a moment, looked at her ruefully, and drew in a second attempt at a breath.

"I mean it," she warned.

Apu deflated again. The pause this time was longer, and she could just tell he was thinking of taking another breath and trying again, so she just head him off at the pass.

"If your lips even come near those bagpipes, Apu," she said, "I will stick it up through holes you didn't even realize you had!"

Later, she would be receiving a letter, addressed to HR, to file a formal complaint. Which, you know, she was HR, soooo....

Prompto was left wondering if today was some kind of National Amnesia Day, with the way Apu did a double take and then started questioning what Prompto was doing there.

"What do you mean, what am I doing here?" Prompto asked, just as frustrated as he was bewildered. "I work here. I've been working here for, like, more than two years, dude. I'm here almost every Friday!"

Really! He totally was!

"Every. Friday."

Definitely yes, he absolutely had been, consistently, for real! Don't trust the squirrels or what the lack of posts may suggest!

But Apu didn't seem to buy it, but, whatever er, he'd just take care of the To-Do list Summer always left for him that he always did on Fridays when he was definitely usually here and then went to play video games on his phone at the cash register.

Summer was a little late coming into work that day, because she was busy picking up a big fancy cheesecake from the bakery for the cheese panda. Because it was actually a pretty big day here at T&C. It was not only National Cheese Lovers Day, but also, apparently, his birthday (although Summer suspected he just said it was because of the cheese lover day thing, but who was she to criticize anyone for leaning hard into a theme?). So they were celebrating two-fold with a little party....and they were passing the sales onto you!

But only if you got one of the cheese panda's recommended cheese. 30% off of all of those, but if you picked one outside of that list, all you earned was a disapproving look and a shake of his head. Which was an improvement from when he used to attack people for their poor taste in cheese, at least!

So come get some cheese, celebrate with the cheese panda, or just do regular shopping or whatever since, you know, that's the whole point of the store.

Did you need something simple or personal or interesting to decorate your life with? Then, boy, were you in the right place! Because it was National Sticker Day here at Turtle & Canary, where there were boundless stickers available for free with any purchase! For every $5 you spend, you get a free sticker of your choice, and there were so many great and moddable stickers to choose from, too! There were also some pretty good discounts on sticker packs, sticker books, stickers for scrapbooking, etc, etc, etc...

"See?" said Summer, gesturing at all the good work Apu did in putting up signs and banners and putting out baskets of stickers for people to shift through and choose. "This is more like it. Nice, simple promotions on things that make sense for a store to have and celebrate. More of this and less....I don't know...National Bring Your Elk to Work Day stuff, Apu, please?"

She might regret this encouragement when she'd found that someone had gone and put a ton of their free stickers all over a variety of shelves and the walls and the Squishy machine and even the cheese panda, but for now? She was actually sorting through a bunch of stickers herself to decorate her water bottle with.

Summer sighed, as she nudged the llama that had been following her and trying to snuggle with her all day that store away yet again so that she could complete entering in her orders into the computer, and then sent a withering look over toward Apu, who, naturally, just ignored her and continued going about his business with his own llama, which mostly involved making sure that the his own llama wasn't eating any of the tinsel that a customer had inadvertently dragged in when coming in through the tinsel-shower weather.

At least she'd managed to shut down his proposal of giving away a free llama for National Llama Day with each purchase over $50. For one thing, that was a staggeringly low price. For another thing, no one should be getting llamas from their grocery store. And for a third thing, she was going to make sure that these llamas went back to whence they came, because she did not want to have that conversation with Prompto about having to dump them at the shelter or just leaving them at the Gig.

Especially since she was pretty sure that, despite the fact that they were all wearing Christmas hats and blankets, these were not a part of the usual Fandom holiday bullshit.

Apparently, Basketball Day and Play Basketball Day were two entirely different things, and Summer should feel bad for not knowing that, but guess what? Summer didn't feel bad in the slightest, there should not be two separate days, she didn't even care what Apu had to say about it, and she was honestly just irritated that he'd apparently spent the weekend while she was gone changing the floors in the store that so that anyone wearing sneakers would make squeaking sounds as they moved across it, just like when you played basketball on a gym floor.

"That is...so much unnecessary attention to detail," she stated, too flabberghasted that anyone would have that kind of energy to even insist upon it.

But he was too busy swooshing balls into the hoops he'd put up at all the end of the aisles to care. Just so long as he didn't accidentally hit any of the little ponies that Summer was trying very hard to not want to adopt (it was made easier, yes, by the fact that they would be gone tomorrow probably), she was fine with it.

Even if they did keep trying to eat things.

Summer had woken up to some rather colorful splotches of cat puke around her apartment, which she cleaned up while wondering why the hell Stark had let her feed sprinkles to her cat.

Granted, Summer probably would have fed sprinkles to Pancakes anyway, but that wasn't the point! He hadn't exactly done anything to stop it, now, had he??

Either way, at least Summer had checked what the internet claimed was a holiday on any given Monday before going into work, so she grateful o come into the store that day to find no banners, no signs, no big specials or strange things, and to have Apu just sort of roll his eyes at her a lot and sigh and walked around with a sort of a blasé attitude, because...well...

It was Blasé Day. What else would be acceptable other than the most unenthusiastic and unimpressed of attitudes? And that was a good thing, because she could not handle dealing with rainbow cat puke and Apu probably trying to eat with her.

Of course, Summer found it absolutely impossible to be blasé about anything once she passed by the cheese case, blinked, and had to grab something from it and start demanding answers from the cheese panda.

"Really, cheese panda? Contraceptive cheese?"

Sometimes, she really hated it here.

But also? Like, she did want to try it, but she would absolutely not trust it.

It seemed as though maybe Apu had trouble figuring out which day to celebrate, and, to be fair, even Summer would see how it would be hard to choose. She couldn't really blame him for being unable to really dedicated himself to one or the other, there were some top choices for November 18th, apparently.

So while everyone was a a princess today and would receive a free tiara with every purchase, there was also a sale on Ouiji boards, black candles, and sage, and a contest to win free groceries for a month if you could shoot an apple off the cheese panda's head.

Apu was clearly banking on the fact that no one would even want to try shooting an apple off the cheese panda's head, but Summer, knowing how people around here could be pretty good fucking shots, herself absolutely included in that, informed him that it was coming out of his paycheck if someone actually did pull it off.

The store had been quiet when Summer came in that day...suspiciously quiet, and her eyes narrowed a little bit at the empty aisles and lack of Apu. Clearly, he was in the back somewhere, either dealing with a shipment or digging up whatever he needed for whatever weird holiday it was, but still, she felt a sense of dread for whatever awaited her later in the day.

On the bright side, she didn't have to wait too long. Almost as soon as she settled behind the counter, booted up her laptop, and started to go through her emails and the payroll, the speakers overhead crackled to life and started absolutely blaring death metal.

And Summer promptly went to the back to threaten to pull the plug on the sound system unless he changed it, because "You know that's only going to summon--"

There was a break in the music just enough for her to hear the bing! of the door opening, and she and Apu both poked their heads out of the back room to confirm as the dark specter of Stewart started making his way through the aisles.

"See?" Summer hissed at him. "I told you! Shut it off! Play elevator music until he goes away. I'm not coming out until he does."

Well, tough luck, Summer, because Apu was going to respect the holiday and keep playing it, but he would at least tell the skid that you weren't in if he asked.

Which of course he would.

After making sure that her day didn't need to be filled with a lot of super annoying portal shit, Summer headed into work to get started on her usual weekly ordering and inventory and whatever else. She'd also prepared herself to ignore whatever it was that Apu was doing that day, only to find that, yet again, twice in a row, she actually found nothing objectionable about anything he was doing.

Because it was National Candy Day, a day that conveniently, like National Chocolate Day last week, shared its space comfortably in the purview of Halloween, meaning all the extra candy was still on sale, as well as other non-holiday related candy, and he hadn't even started putting up Christmas decorations or playing Christmas music yet at all!

She was equal parts proud of him and incredibly suspicious.

Whoever was in charge of these daily holidays things at least got one thing right by putting National Chocolate Day right before Halloween. So while Summer was using it as a good excuse to snack on some of the really fancy stuff while she was working on her orders for the week, there was also a pretty big sale on all the bags of chocolate-centered Halloween candy you could imagine, all of them, of course, in a great display that showed that Apu really did have a knack for this when he wasn't being weird about it.

She was absolutely hording all the Reese's pumpkins, though. Maybe if you give her a good deal or could sweet talk her enough, she'd be willing to share her bounty with you, too.

For many, many years in the past, Apu had celebrated Bathtub Day by setting up a bathtub at the front of the store and slipping in to enjoy the benefits of the holiday personally, but, thankfully, and especially because Summer didn't want to deal with that sort of crap today after dealing with what she had dealt with over the weekend, he finally decided to do something a little bit....different this year.

He still had a bathtub out in front of the store, but instead of actually putting himself in it, he just filled it up with all sorts of bath supplies, soaps, lotions, towels, etc, etc, etc, in a display that was particularly featuring things like bath bombs and bubble bath since he'd heard Pick Your Poison was dispensing of all that chemically stuff, or something like that.

"I cannot even tell you how much of an improvement on previous years this is," Summer complimented him. "Good work, Apu."

See? See what happened when you were just normal and not weird, Apu? You got compliments and probably a little boost in your paychecks.

Well, until she found out what you'd allowed to go on in front of the store during the weekend, anyway.

Yes, there had been a truce, a treaty, an...agreement, between Stewart and Summer that dancing in front of the T&C was an activity most forbidden. But the space out in front of the Kwik Stop was...subpar, in his grand opinion, and while he supposed they could make use of the space in front of Groovy Tunes since he was the de facto manager of the place and therefor not one to complain about his own illicit activities there...

....Summer was, as per her email to her class that morning, not even here right now.

But Roald (and Connor and Darian) was. And Stewart wasn't about to have his best friend(s) come all the way from Letterkenny just to dance in front of a subpar storefront.

The Skids were out in full force today, everyone, just in time for all your dear friends and family to visit, too. They had out their boombox, pumping out some of the best electronica and EDM beats, and they were going to be aggressively dancing for all the world to see, and, quite frankly, as far as Stewart and Roald (and Connor and Darian) were concerned?

Of course Summer knew that today was Celebrate Bisexuality Day, and so she was bracing herself and holding her breath for whatever potential terrible and highly inappropriate Apu might think to do about it. But maybe she'd luck out and he'd celebrate International Day of Sign Languages instead? All hopes of that were immediately dashed the moment she walked into an explosion of pink, purple, and blue within the store, though.

But that....seemed to be the only thing? Was he actually being...dare she say it?...reasonable about it? She wasn't sure if she could trust it, so, just to make sure, whenever Apu did come up to her and open his mouth to say something, she cut him off and stopped him.

"No," she said. "Don't. This is nice, you're doing so well, Apu, let's not do anything to ruin it, okay?"

Very, very slowly, he was going to go ahead and put away that 50% off if you kiss both of us sign, which was, really, a very smart move.

"What do you mean, there's no provolone?" Summer asked, frowning at the cheese panda while doing her best to try and ignore the mariachi band that was playing way too closely to her, the one that Apu had brought in for Mexican Independence Day, and the cheese panda tried to explain without any word at all about the entire lack of provolone cheese in the store that day.

"So there's a shortage on provolone," Summer shrugged a little, because there was still, like, so many other cheeses, "what's the big deal?"

The cheese panda continued to try and press upon her the importance of all this provolone just disappearing, apparently there had been plenty up until today, and now it was all gone, but Summer was still not seeing what the big deal was, and she promised the cheese panda she'd order extra today to make up for it, but he was still irritated and there was a huge cleanup on Aisle Handwavey because of it and Summer wondered if she needed to threaten mandated employee anger management classes again.

But, after she ordered the provolone, she almost didn't even think about it again, save for when a customer asked about it, which was....surprisingly high, since when did so many people need provolone cheese??? Did someone buy them out of it late last night or early this morning? She checked the sales and didn't see any...

...and then she started to warily eye the piñata that Apu had hoisted up by the Squishy machine.

No....

....no. He wouldn't...

....ohgod he would!

Summer was squinting a little bit at the display that Apu had set up in the store that day, which involved a confessional of sorts and an assortment of different bottles and cans of brews, letting everyone know that it was, apparently, Buy a Priest a Beer Day.

"Wait," she checked. "You're not suggesting that you're some kind of priest, are you? I mean, I was actually a high priestess in a religion for a hot minute, I'm pretty sure that gives me way more credentials to have a beer bought for me today that it does you."

But now she felt she was onto something. "Wait, do former priests count? And can I substitute a beer for, like, a White Claw or a cider? Don't give me that look, I'm not going to drink it here. I'm doing sangria tonight, pregaming for that just means being even more miserable on Tuesday."

Whatever. She mostly remembered that she was the boss around here and if she wanted a White Claw for briefly being a priestess in a religion that worshipped giant floating heads that made people sing in a glorified intergalactic EuroVision-slash-American Idol to save their planet from being destroyed, she could just, you know, get one.

It was the start of a new semester, so of course Turtle & Canary was having its traditional New People sale, although Summer realized that the amount of people who could take advantage of that was pretty small this time around. So she'd be willing to hear cases from people if they weren't, like, pretty much the three newbies that showed up at the bar on Wednesday, but you'd have to be pretty convincing.

Besides, Summer was far too busy being concerned with the Free Ear Piercing station that Apu was setting up for Pierce Your Ears Day. He insisted that he had experience because he used to work at a Claire's, but Summer had her doubts.

The fact that each ear piercing came not with a free set of earrings but, instead, a free ice pack, should tell you all you needed to know about that, really.

For once, the random holiday that Apu was celebrating was actually kind of useful! And not actually annoying, and made perfect sense for a general store like Turtle & Canary. Summer was almost a little bit touched, even if she was trying to keep herself cautiously optimistic about perhaps a more reasonable turn in Apu.

Because, if the tall white pyramids flanking the Squishy machine or the check-out counter or mounted in the front window weren't a hint, the banner hanging from the ceiling would tell everyone that it was, indeed, National Toilet Paper Day, and they were having a nice little BoGo on it, today only!

Summer, meanwhile, was definitely the one who added the "Stock Up Now for Halloween!!" sign.

Summer was avidly determined to ignore Apu completely the moment she walked in the door and he tried to speak to her and she was immediately, "No. No. Absolutely not" and shut that down as soon as she could. He could do that to the cheese panda and hapless customers all day if he wanted, but she wasn't having any of it, which was fine, because she had some work and some texting to do.

Until...

Summer was convinced, of course, that everything in the multiverse was a crapshoot and coincidences were just that, happenstance and bizarre luck that was determined by nothing in particular, no greater forces, no matter how many fucking Jedi and Sith she happened to come across and learn to know and love throughout the years. But moments like this almost made her wonder, because she just so happened to idly look up as Apu was carting a few boxes from a morning shipment (one of the ones she hadn't even ordered) toward Aisle Handwavey.

Black boxes, with some red bleeding edges, and a distinctly precise white lettering in an instantly recognizable font, that she hadn't seen in well over two years, despite her attempts to order it constantly, orders that abruptly cut off sometime around when a certain trio of chocobros left for their best friend's wedding.

"....Hole-lee shit. Apu! Hold on! Wait!"

The poor man didn't know the value of the cargo he was just casually toting into the store, and Summer was going to circumnavigate that instantly to the back room, and quickly, too! She needed to decide if she wanted to use this as a bargaining chip before Gladio stopped in for his weekly beverage run. She needed to strategize. She needed to get some rum for the squirrels. She needed to figure out which of the potential pathways she could take from here would be most beneficial to her in the long run, and while she considered the possibilities, she would be cackling with the mad power that had just fallen so haplessly into her hands.

And then Apu ruined it by saying something to her.

"Please," she said, "I was having a moment, how do you even know any Gungans, I swear to god..."

Summer had been bracing herself for going into the store today, because she knew the cheese panda had been excited about Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day for nearly the entire month of July. And today was finally the day, and she wasn't exactly sure what to expect when she waked in.

But honestly? What he'd put together was actually kind of nice? There was signage over in the cheese department explaining what Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day meant and how it tied back to old methods of pest control in the form of offering cheese to rats and baiting mousetraps with them. There were pamphlets on more humane ways to pest control available these days, so that you can enjoy all your cheese to yourself and not waste it on ungrateful rodents! And, as such, he'd set up little smaller samples and pieces of a variety of different cheeses to be bought at a significantly reduced price, some of them even in collection of various different cheeses! All in reverence and reference to the small bits of cheese sacrificed to mice and what have you throughout the centuries.

So you know what? Not bad, not bad!

Granted, we'll see if Summer's positive reception of this special event remained in tact once someone tried to politely decline taking any cheese from the panda, but for now? She was almost kind of impressed. Good work, cheese panda!

Prompto was so, so, so tempted to just not even ask why Apu was setting up a massage table at the front of the store today, but of course Apu was going to tell him about Holistic Therapy Day, anyway, and explain that he wanted to offer his services to customers in celebration.

Skeptical that 1) Apu was any sort of professional in this regard and 2) that he wasn't just ripping off of Liliana's class yesterday and claiming it was an official holiday or whatever, Prompto was keeping his distance and maybe making a small addition to the sign Apu had put up about it.

If anyone needed Summer, she'll probably be in the aisle doing inventory, or sitting in front of the checkout counter, because behind the check out counter, there was a hammock strung up and she didn't want to deal with working around it, and Apu can ring people up since he seemed to insistent on the hammock being used while anyone was back there.

Like, the cheese panda setting up a display of gorgonzola in a hammock? Sure, fine, whatever, didn't make a whole lot of sense but it was on theme, but behind the counter? Come on.

Whatever. Summer was just going to absolutely wait for when Apu had to get out of that hammock and film how ridiculous he looked in attempting.

Whenever Apu passed by Prompto or if Prompto went to ask him something, all he was getting out of the other guy was his tongue being stuck out at him. Which did seem to be in line with something Apu would do, so he tried not to think too much about it, although he was, toward the end of the day, unable to keep himself from starting to do it back. He wasn't proud of this development, but it really couldn't be helped.

And, really, he was going easy on the guy! He bet Summer would have just straight up threatened to cut it off if he kept doing it!

In between customers, he was going to start trolling through the shelves to look for other products that may have leaked over from Eos, since it had been a while since he'd seen any, and it was always kind of fun and neat and it would be pretty cool, wouldn't it, if things turned out the way they had during the reunion where they could actually get back again?

Prompto's Crumbler class had really reignited his tinkerer's spark, which meant that thank gods it was Etch-A-Sketch Day! He had come in fully intending to finally get inside that Squishy machine to see if they didn't need Amaya to come in to fix it when it needed repairs after all, he could probably do it himself, which would have lead to the whole thing being down for the entire day, but Apu, not even realizing what fate he was preventing by doing so, slipped one of the Etch-a-Sketches in front of Prompto and Prompto was instantly intrigued.

"Oooooh," he said, once he started turning the knobs and seeing that they made lines. "Neat!"

And thus, the Squishy machine remained in tact, and Prompto was giddily wasting way too much time trying to draw chocobos and puppies on a children's toy at the counter.

Summer had debated with herself for a good, long time that morning about whether or not she wanted to bother going into work today. She was also considering just turning off her goddamn phone and heading into space for...a good long time, not even caring about her class tomorrow and just....yeah.

But she knew that doing that would probably just make things even more complicated and annoying, so she stayed put. Considered just staying home then (still probably turning off her phone) and forgetting about it for a while with some chemical assistance, but...

She did end up coming into the store instead. Maybe just focusing on inventory and orders would help her forget just as well, in addition to being a productive member of society. Or whatever.

A choice she was regretting with every "Hear ye, hear ye!" announcement from Apu, where he was taking International Town Criers Day to heart by bellowing out the sales of the day every hour, on the hour.

Looks like her phone was staying on, after all, if only so she could have music to blare to drown him out with her earbuds, and thank god for some of Atton's recommendations last week, because that was exactly the vibe she needed right now.

Prompto was frowning when he came into work that day. He was frowning a lot.

Because, apparently, Apu had gone and changed all the signage in the entire store to Comic Sans for Comic Sans Day.

Look, even Prompto knew how terrible this was! But when he started to let out a complaint about it, Apu told him about what other day he almost celebrated instead.

Prompto was no longer frowning about Comic Sans Day nearly as much now.

Naturally, the store was all decked out in red and white today, and you just know there was a shit ton of blue waiting in the back room to be haphazardly added to it in a couple of days. And while Summer came in that morning expecting to be confronted with a display of maple syrup, Canadian bacon, and all-dressed chips, she was, instead, met with postal stamps.

"While I applaud your efforts to move away from the obvious, Apu," she stated after she considered this, "this feels a little like a conflict of interest."

But Apu just shrugged, and so Summer just shrugged, too, and went about her work, and only realized way too late that the sound system was only playing reggae.

Summer thought about skipping out on work as an extension of her birthday weekend, but since she and Stark had already returned in time for paintball, she figured it wouldn't hurt to at least drop in and see how things were going and to make sure nothing had gotten too chaotic or wild in her absence. And you know what? Everything seemed pretty a-okay. That was kind of the beauty of a store that, if left to its own devices, really did seem to delight in running itself well and efficiently. She could sort of disappear whenever she wanted or needed to and things just chugged right along.

There was, of course, a big display and sale on swimwear and swim gear. Not because it was summer, or anything like that, perish the thought. Just because it was apparently National Swim a Lap Day, and Apu just wanted to make sure you best equipped with the best gear for....that one lap, apparently.

On the bright side, nothing too weird had happened yesterday when Summer went home for Father's Day. However, that bar was so low you'd trip on it, so Summer still didn't want to talk about it. She also didn't want to deal with Apu.

She would never know how lucky she was that he'd gone and misinterpreted World Croc Day to mean 'let's put a bunch of really ugly shoes on sale' day and not, you know, 'let's fill the store up with a bunch of giant semiaquatic reptiles that could easily bite off customers' appendages' day.

Oh boy! Were you looking for some good deals on some ball point pens? Then today was your lucky day! Because there was a massive sale of them going on at Turtle & Canary today for National Ballpoint Pen Day! Come, get some good discounts on writing utensils and see the amazing work Apu had done recreating the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and the Sears Tower all in ball point pens! Amazing! Brilliant!

Honestly, Summer wasn't paying any attention. Not only did she have work to do and caused a ruckus when she accidentally removed a load-bearing pen from the ballpoint Big Ben, but she was also trying to decided if she wanted to go with humane pest removal by blasting Stewart with Atton's music if he showed up at the store today or if she wanted to have a little more fun with it, because she did order some more spike strips that could fit neatly in front of the store....

....it would, however, mess a little with the friendly, welcoming aesthetic they had going on, but....

Maybe if she accidentally just dropped a bunch of thumb tacks? It was nice, though, that she did have options.

During the first half of his shift that Friday, Prompto was just sort of fascinated that not only did VCRs still exist, but that they had enough of them to be putting them on display and promoting them for an actual holiday. Like, he wasn't even from here, but even he knew how outdated that technology was.

But by the time he'd come back after taking his break for Camping class and lunch, nearly all the VCRs had been somehow mysteriously broken? None of the others would fess up to anything, but Prompto had a sneaking suspicion it had something to do with the fact that he was also coming back to discover a whole mess of brie that needed spoiling out.

And you know what? This seemed like a good time to settle in and start poking around with some VCR equipment to see if he could figure out how to either fix them or repurpose them somehow for something else.

Between the mugs, the banners, the balloons, and the almost Stepford-y levels of cheerfulness coming out of Apu every time he mentioned it, it seemed that Thank God It's Monday Day was in full swing here at Turtle & Canary! Summer definitely was not getting down with the sentiment, though, shaking her head and trying to ignore it as best she could as she went about her usual Monday tasks.

And then realized around half-way through the day that the reason Apu was going to embrace the chance to make it TGIM instead of TGIF was probably because Prompto worked on Fridays, and so he truly never would thank God that it was Friday...

She did sort of wonder, though, if there was going to be a turf war later if Stewart showed up to do his weird dancing thing while that random fat orange cat with a sign protesting that he Hated Mondays was still there outside.

Alright, so Prompto finally figured out how to make this Friday schedule thing work, and he knew Apu was going to give him crap about it, but Apu? Was just going to have to deal with it.

But he could easily come in for the morning, and then head out a little early to swing by home to pick up Noctra for their camping class, bring Noctra back and have a little extra extended lunch with her and Liz before heading back to the store and staying just a touch later to finish out his shift. Apu made a rude comment when he came back after his class and lunch break that he shouldn't even bother coming back at all, and you know what, Apu? That just meant that Prompto was going to come back even harder.

(Whatever that meant).

So there.

But also, he was pretty sure this alleged National Heat Awareness Day was not a real thing, and, if it was, it definitely wasn't celebrated by cranking up the heat in the store in the summertime, Apu.

They were definitely going to have to call Amaya by the end of the day with the way the Squishy machine was working overtime to keep itself cool today, ugh.
