From a distance, they were just three students waiting for transport. The dog, the cat, and the horse were unusual additions, but not completely bizarre.

Get closer, and one would realise it was a uniquely Fandom group.

One priest, one demon hunter, one Tarkheena and one Avatar, along with a horse and a dog who'd both recently spent time as humans. The transport they were waiting for wasn't a bus or a taxi, but rather a swirling multi-coloured portal.

It spun into life and Altra led the way as Aravis, Dean, and Karal, along with Ata and Trenor, moved between worlds into Valdemar.

The raft was almost done now; just one more log to fasten securely, and it'd probably be water-worthy. Ender wasn't in any hurry to do it, though. He was hoping his friend (or close to a friend, whatever quality the word had taken on at this point his life) would show up, and so he didn't hurry, wrapping the rope around his hand to keep it all neatly together.

He had time to sit, and focus on the waves, rolling gently up the beach.

"I must leave soon," Solaris murmured, glancing down at Altra.

The beach was peaceful, the intermittent rains held at bay for the moment, and two Sun-priests stood looking out over the ocean, one through the eyes of the Firecat sitting by his feet. "I know," Karal replied.

Solaris had arrived before dawn, accompanied only by Hansa, and they had made their way, priests and Firecats, to the clearing in the preserve, the one Karal had come to think of as his. Together, they had said the Dawn Rites, and the light that filled the clearing was brighter and warmer than any nearly-winter morning should rightly be.

"I'm grateful that you came," he continued, entirely at peace. "What do you think of the ocean?"

"Incredible," Solaris replied. "Simply incredible."

Karal smiled, remembering the first time he'd seen the great expanse of the sea, and they stood together in silent companionship, listening to the waves and enjoying the tranquillity of the morning.

[ooc: The beach, it is an open place, and welcomes all, but Karal and Solaris are here just for one, please.]

Karal had awoken before dawn to pray, reciting the Dawn Rites on the dorm roof, and now he and Altra were walking along the beach. They had returned from Valdemar with the problem of Veren unresolved and it was worrying at him.

Six months ago, he'd have been riding Trenor, finding peace in the time spent with his horse; now, all he could do was walk. It didn't help.

Something else might, though. When he reached Ender's raft, he sat in front of it, pondering it through Altra's eyes. After a minute, he started wrapping rope around the joins.

It was nowhere near as distracting as riding, doing little to clear his mind, but it helped a little.

Ender had found his fair share of jobs to keep his hands busy. It still wasn't enough, and mornings granted him too much silence, of the kind that was discomfiting rather than comfortable, the kind that made him move.

He wanted something simple for those mornings. And that was what found him on the beach early in the morning, early enough for sunrise to have only just set in, a set of wooden poles scattered across his little corner of it all. He had some rope, and he had some tools.

It was stupidly, feverishly sentimental, but that wasn't something he minded right now.

Slowly, surely, Ender Wiggin started to work on his raft for the first morning in a long string of them.

Perhaps being out and about wasn't the safest of options, but Karal needed to walk, to be out in the fresh air, and they were being cautious.

Altra paced in front of them while Karal told Evey of what had happened in Special Collections today. "And I would be just as happy to never have a need to go in there again," he finished, twining his fingers with Evey's.

Mayor Summers and Principal Winchester stood on the platform, the former crossing his arms and scowling somewhat at the back of the room. When he got up to the stand, though, that wore off.

"Welcome," he said, once everyone had entered, "I'd rather have had my first town meeting on more of an up note, but that's not in the cards. You might have noticed the arrival of another island off our shores. They aren't friendlies. Stay away from the island to the best of your ability. Don't pick fights unless you have to." He scraped his throat. "They are currently trying to hold us hostage. We're not going to let that happen."

He nodded at Zoe. "Principal Winchester?"

Zoe was trying to keep her expression neutral, in the hope that if she stayed calm, everyone else would as well. "The inhabitants of the other island want this one as their own, and their leaders have come up with a...plan of sorts for deciding who gets to stay. It's a tournament, us versus them, with chosen fighters from each side."

"After careful consideration," she said, glancing at Cable before looking back to the crowd, "we have decided that agreeing to their request is the best course of action."

"You'll find the list of chosen fighters at the door," Cable continued, fluidly, his face set as impassive as it got-- which was pretty much totally. "But have faith-- no matter how this tournament goes, they're not going to take this island, and you'll hear from us again soon enough."

Karal had woken early this morning, well before sunrise, and after saying the Dawn Rites had wandered down into town.

A pot of tea and a comfortable seat by the window, Altra curled next to him with a belly full of cream, was a pleasant way to while away the time until he had to go and open the library. He had deliberately set aside everything that had been filling his thoughts over the past week, and was simply enjoying the morning.

The past few weeks of work were finally coming to a head, and Charlotte was both nervous and excited and getting herself worked up into a frenzy with making sure everything was perfect. She couldn't help feeling an overwhelming sense of satisfaction with the exhibit, though. The turnout wasn't huge, but nicely manageable and thankfully not small by any measure. Some of the work was a bit amateurish, but she had to admit to being pretty blown away by a few of the others.

By the time eight o'clock rolled around and the doors were open, the gallery was set up in a display of the pieces by artist, and the usual spread of treats and drinks were available in another area of the room. Charlotte, dressed in a vibrant red, milled around the gallery to make sure everything was in order and all the guests were enjoying the exhibit. She was also keeping an eye out for the artists of certain pieces, since she was very eager to potentially meet them.

In retrospect, Charlotte was thinking that perhaps, after his little display of his ability to hammer well, she should lightly pester Kevin into flexing those carpentry muscles to build something...anything...for the exhibit, especially since there had been no submissions yet. Sure, it was still a few days until the deadline, but she was a little paranoid polly and it made her flail a little bit. Maybe she should extend it, wait until next week to do the exhibit...

...The usual Sunday tea that was set out for guests was being constantly rearranged out of all of Charlotte's fidgeting.

It wasn't unusual for Adah to be ready for what she needed to do before it needed to be done or, in this current situation, before she could do it. Most of her things had been shipped for convenience, so Adah sat at the base of a tree in the park with one simple, small suitcase beside her and a notebook in her lap. She had a bit still until her cab should arrive at the causeway to take her to the airport for her flight back to Georgia and back in 1963, but that suited her just fine. It gave her a chance to work on one final tribute to Fandom as she passed the few, slowly dragging hours that remained. Sitting, and sketching. Wildlife, but not the birds or plants that took form in her usual sketches. No, she was sketching squirrels today, many of them. And all of them dying horrible, realistically scribbled deaths.

It was analeptic, really, interrupted only occassionally by a slight sigh and a lift of her eyes, casting her gaze around the park as she tried to not think about how much she'd miss this place, before checking her watch again, seeing how long she had, and then returning to her sketching until it was time.

Karal arrived a bit early and took a seat near the window to wait for Jaina, hoping she'd actually arrive as she'd said.

Not far from where the Skeleton Tea had been held earlier in the day, there was a tent that had been erected, with thiny, gauzy material and bone-like poles. Not dirty. The lights were soft as the evening grew darker, casting a welcoming, yet vaguely spooky illumination on the proceedings.

The proceedings of PROM.

One side of the tent was open, backing against a grove of trees; there were a few lights among them, but for the most part they offered shadowy nooks for anyone who wished to be a bit apart from the main action. The rest of the tent was enclosed, save for the entrance, and the same skeletons who'd worked the Tea earlier were at the refreshments table, ready and willing to serve any students or chaperones who approached. At one end of the table was the ballot box for prom court voting.

The music was just getting started, and the dance floor was yet to fill up, but regardless, Fandom High Prom 2008 was underway!

Karal had woken early even for him, slipping quietly out of bed before sunrise and making his way down to the stables.

He perched on a hay bale, drinking tea while Trenor ate his breakfast. He groomed him while that breakfast settled, taking extra care and just enjoying the time with his horse, then turned Trenor out in the stableyard to doze while Karal cleaned his stall.

Leaning on the fence when he was finished, Karal watched him, chuckling when Trenor snorted himself awake. Once he was tacked up, Karal pointed him towards the beach. It was crisp and clean and warm, a perfect day to run, and it wasn't long before they were galloping down the beach, flying over the occasional driftwood log and splashing through the surf.

The waves washed up on the beach. The ceaseless sound of the sea had filled the ears of the temporary residents of the cave as they fell asleep and it was there in the morning, marking the pace of the ocean. Today the sun shone, it's light reflecting and moving with the shifting water. Seabirds cried out, the smell of salt and seaweed was carried with the wind. It was an Easter Sunday morning, just like any other morning by the sea. Danyel drew circles with a stick in the sand, the cat called Altra pacing next to him. He wasn't crying now, but the dried tears from last night made his face sting. His mother wasn't coming back; those who had killed her were.

Then in a second there was a shift, small but noticeable. From across the water a silence approached. The sun seemed brighter; its light appeared to grow stronger. Danyel looked up, frowning but curious. The wind slowed down into stillness, and at first the sea seemed to grow calmer. Then its surface changed to cold, bright white. It was turning to ice. The air was freezing too, stinging Danyel's face even more than the tears.

There were no sounds anymore, as if the bright, cold light was absorbing it. When a figure appeared walking towards them from the horizon, no noise was heard.

Altra looked up and hissed, ears flattened, and he shouldered in front of the boy. :Danyel, run. Get to Anakin.:

Danyel took a step back, then another one. Then he froze, unable to take his eyes off the angel.

The angel stretched out a hand towards the boy and smiled. )

They made it back to Fandom in one Jump, hit the ground near the Causeway, and Altra instantly Jumped them again. Karal barely held onto his nausea, but he never let go of the boy.

When they reappeared in a cave - a nice cave, as caves went, dry and spacious, and he could hear the ocean - he stared around, blinking as Altra created a magelight. "Altra?"

:We're still on the island. If they find us, if they follow us... we need to hide him, and it's not safe for us to be near people. Give the boy to Gabriel and fetch Evey. I'm going after Anakin. I don't know if they can follow our trail, I obscured it as best I could, but we have to assume that they'll be here eventually.:

Karal swallowed hard and nodded, gently pressing Danyel towards Gabriel, and then he turned and ran out of the cave. Altra Jumped out a few seconds later, leaving the glowing blue magelight hanging in the air.

Sometime in the afternoon, phone calls started coming in to Zoe from the away teams, with messages of success that made her feel more relieved than she had in days. After talking to Harriet and Kerrigan about what they'd been able to accomplish, the plans to finish this fight finally started to come together, and all that seemed to be left to do was inform the town, and gather more volunteers.

Once again, fliers appeared around town and in the dorms, calling everyone who was left together for a second town meeting. Zoe gave the people who arrived some time to get settled and check in with each other, before she got up to speak.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," she said. "I'm pleased to say that I have good news to share. All of our travelers have successfully found the information we sent them to search for, and with this information, the administration has come up with two plans: one to stop the angels, and one to bring everyone who's gone missing home."

First, Zoe explained the plan to lure the angels into the preserve which I will not type out again so as to not bore you all, and then she opened the floor to Harriet, to explain how the missing persons were being brought back which has its own OCD thread la la la.

"What we need now are volunteers to deal with the angels, and to make this plan work. I'm not going to lie to you," she said. "It's going to be dangerous, and I know that my job is to keep the students and teachers out of danger as much as possible. But I also know that if anyone can pull this off, it's the people in this town. If we all work together, we can get rid of this threat, and get our friends and family home. If you have any questions before you volunteer, either Dean Jones or I would be happy to answer them."

Arrivals to the town hall for the dance would find it decorated with darker, richer colors, from the draping streamers to the balloons scattered around to the runner on the snacks table. At the entrance, there was even a table with a variety of masks available for those who might not have brought their own, or were too damn lazy to get one, provided ever so graciously by Turtle & Canary.

And there wasn't a single speck of pink in the decorations. Nope. Not one. Turtle had made sure of it, even against the nefarious plottings of someone whose name may have rhymed with Peg Panning.

There was, however, still a lot of glitter. You could change the world, but you couldn't tempt fate.

Somehow, somewhere, in Galahad's attempt to find a ship to take him home, he'd lost his bard.

He needed his bard, his bard was very important.

A bard could go where a knight could not...unless that knight was the bard's guard. Chaucer was his key to safe passage.

When he found himself on the beach, now free of mountain sized talking monsters, he decided it would do for tonight's camp. Plenty of dry wood, with a lee in the rocks that would protect him, Gaiwan, and the fire from the wind and the cold. It was perfect.

No bunny tonight, but as it turned out there were deer in the woods - tiny, strange coloured ones - a haunch of which he set to cooking over the flames.

The sun rose, the clouds parted briefly to let it shine through onto the beach, and Karal stretched to his feet. He'd been awake all night, was beyond tired, but despite that, he felt alive, energised, and he beamed as he stretched.

"This is going to be a good year," he announced, walking down to the water's edge. Altra grumbled a sleepy protest behind him and put his paws over his head.

Karal simply laughed at him and dodged a wave. "It is, you'll see. Glory, it's going to be wonderful."

Ignoring Altra's muttered imprecations about the bad things that happened to those who were cheerful in the mornings, he began the Morning Prayer, welcoming the first day of the new year to Fandom.

There was a bonfire on the beach, burning merrily against the darkness.

Karal had spent the hours before sunset gathering wood, arranging it carefully so it would catch easily and burn well, and now he sat, wrapped in his cloak, watching the fire.

Altra sat next to him - well, sprawled on a blanket next to him - grooming a paw. :You're going to stay here all night.: It wasn't really a question.

"Until dawn," he replied, glancing down at the 'cat. "As is the tradition."

It was the vigil against the darkness, to ensure the time between one year and the next passed smoothly. In Karse, it would have been held in the great Temple, by a convocation of Sun-priests, novices, and acolytes, but here there was only him.

"Luckily it's only a small island," he whispered, head tipped back to smile up at the stars.
