So, it was Nina's birthday weekend and Prompto had been planning this for a while---well, okay, so, he'd been planning it since Tuesday, but! That was, like, really ahead of the game for him! And he was feeling pretty confident in how everything was falling into place, getting to the island early so he could make sure everything to set up right and engaging his 'troops' to keep Nina nice and distracted for the day -- Foomy on the front line (he didn't think he could effectively recruite Ms. Dozy and he was not wrong), with Ignis slipping in to ask about some rando obscure detail of Lucis military history and asking her thoughts about a more modern approach, Iris engaging in a super important flailing manuever of what to wear to some school event that night, and then, finally, the real coup to grace of distraction and preoccupation, deploying Noctis with the deceptively simple 'happy birthday' text that should really buy him some time.

And so, by the time the evening was on its way and the sunset arrived to distract Prompto (dressed, of course, in a terrible shirt to fit the theme) with that awful longing for actual sunsets all over again, everything was set and ready to go, and the beach looked like a party store had tropical indigestion and threw fake plastic pink flowers and long grass table skirts up over everything. There was a big bonfire roaring and ready to go and tiki torches set strategically to keep everything nice and illuminated for the night, a stereo pumping out some real sick beats, a disgusting amount of pink flower leis, tons of food....and yes, even a palm tree balloon arch, don't even.

...so now all they needed was people, and, eventually, the birthday girl herself, as Prompto was now bouncing and fidgeting over the sand, really hoping people got the invitations. Or, if anything, that they saw there was a big ass party out on the beach and showed up even just to check it out or crash whatever it was.

It would be nice, though, if it was mostly people here for Nina's birthday, because he just knew how much it would mean to her.

[[ OPEN PARTY IS OPEN! Mod invites, just wander in, crash because it is NOT a subtle party at all! Just please to be waiting for the OCD it's up! Have at it! ]]

Summers were for lazing about, that had become clear to Owen.

Of course, to do your lazing about the right way, you needed money. And so there Owen was, sighing wistfully at the tea nook that he was not, he would point out, lazing in right now.

He had been using a broom to clean up the same patch of floor for about an hour now, though. But still: that wasn't lazing!

Honestly, like, Nina didn't hit up the beach very often. The beach itself was okay, she supposed, though it was too rocky to be properly romantic and the porgs, while cute, were also not really conductive to romance either. The real reason she didn't hit up the beach much was the ocean.

It was huge. It felt empty.

She didn't like it very much, despite all the torrid romances she'd read about dashing pirates.

Traveling over the ocean was fine since, like, that served a purpose and she did enjoy that, with the rocking of the ships and the sea breeze tangled in her hair and salty spray everywhere. There was something energetic about it.

But she didn't like the ocean much just by itself.

Still, today was a lovely spring day and her walk had led her to the beach. The walking she was enjoying. The ocean… well… Nina gave it a go at pretending it wasn't there.

Because, sure, that would work.

So! This pollen thing sure still was going on, huh! Kitty would have appreciated knowing that was going to be a thing when she set that up! Though it might also bring in more super frustrated people towards the end of this week?

The flyer on the door advertised Three Minute Dates tonight though it was easy enough to miss if you were distracted/wanted to be surprised and there were plenty of available drinks, along with Tino at the bar, who was happy to sign you up for tonight. Maybe without you knowing about it.

At 8:00 on the dot, the zombie band, dressed in tuxedos and please don't ask how they got them on, began to play something that sounded suspiciously like Barry White. And after that intro, Kitty walked out to the microphone, where a banner reading "WELCOME TO THREE MINUTE DATES" unfurled behind her.

"Good evening, all, and welcome to the triumphant return of Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you've never experienced this before, the rules are simple! Your names will be read off in pairs. You will sit at one of these lovely tables here. You will have five minutes to talk and get to know each other. Exchange numbers. What have you. After those five minutes, you'll hear a gong-" Or a bell, or a buzzer, who even knew anymore. "-and move on to the next partner. You'll have five rounds, and if there's someone you hit it off with, feel free to stick around and get a drink with them once the dates are over. Oh! And don't have sex in my bar."

That was important.

"And with that over with, let's-"

And with that, the gong went off too early- prematurely, you might say- and it was on to the event!

[Three minutes = ten comments total, five per person. Feel free to go a little over but don't get carried away. You have other dates to get to! A regular bar post will go up later, and you can absolutely finish things up on Sunday!

OCD a-coming! a-here! Go forth and date for exactly three minutes!

If I made a blatant mistake, like doubling people up or you dating yourself when you did not tell me you could date yourself, grab me via email or in the OOC thread and I will adjust!]

He was just, er. Trying out the comfort of their reading nook?

Yes. Yes that was what going on here.

... The Bookbelt was open. Allegedly.

Well, sure, it was a bit brisk out, but that was actually the perfect kind of weather for a good end-of-the-season bush party. All Wayne had to do was throw on a turtleneck underneath his plaid (you lose a lot of heat in the neck) and make sure the fire was a good solid one, and they'd be all set.

Where Wayne managed to get so many fold-out chairs to set around the fire he'd gotten started in the firepit in the old campgrounds out in the preserve was anyone's guess, but there was plenty of seating for anyone who did show up. He wasn't really expecting a whole lot for just an impromptu bush party, and that was fine, as it'd come up as mostly just a way to get to know his roommate a bit better, and sometimes the smaller get-togethers were always the better ones, but there was a lot to be said for a party that just got much bigger than you expected, too.

Pretty low key. Nothing fancy. A fire and some food and some beer and pop, ain't no reason to get excited.

Although there were apparently a lot of sparklers, too, and more glitter than Wayne would have expected about the place considering he hadn't even brought any. The sparklers he was fairly certian had something to do with his invitation sender. The glitter could have been her, too, but he'd actually be willing to put his money down on the island for that one.

[[ open party is open! If you're a student, you received an invitation, one way or another! If you're someone else who just wants to harrass a bunch of kids having a drinking party in the woods, FINE BE THAT WAY OLD MAN. I DON'T CARE! err, um, ocd on the way! lol is up. Have at! ]]

Weren't the quiet weekends nice? Owen certainly felt so.

Even if he was still uncertain about Nina's whole book furniture... thing. "Right, mates, it's time for your bi-weekly cleaning," he said, "By which I mean I'm going to lightly wave this rag at you and... maybe give that massive tome over there a massage because you're looking a bit ornery, buddy."

How had he fallen so far, so quickly? Who knew.

It had been a surprisingly quiet day.

Quiet in a cypher sort of way, Owen meant. He spent some time that morning cleaning up a bit, broom in hand, but by afternoon laziness had struck and he'd take up lounging in the corner.

But it was quiet. His senses weren't even giving him much data on the weather.

"Sigh."

Yes, he just said the word 'sigh' out loud.

It was a perfectly ordinary sort of day, and Owen was in a perfectly ordinary sort of mood.

Bar the part where all the books had decided to hide in boxes in the back today.

And so he was stuck going from the back to the front, trying to figure out how he'd somehow wound up living a life where he had to coax books out of their hiding places.

Well, the excitement of no longer being the newest person on the island had worn off, perhaps, but the food hadn't!

... Yes, Owen had stolen a fair amount of pastries from the picnic yesterday. Was he snacking on them above the books? Of course not.

... The counter, however, was free game.

Mmm.

Owen had fallen asleep a small, orange-y toy computer, sitting alone on a shelf somewhere in the Bookbelt.

He woke up a fully-sized teenage boy, sitting on top of a toppled bookshelf, surrounded by dust and cranky books and covered in paper cuts.

"What the... Ow! I need a medic!"

Well, okay, maybe that was a little overblown.

The music was gentle, almost unobtrusive.

Outside.

Inside, it was blasting at high volume, and it was driving Owen insane. Bad enough that all the walls were now creepy stone and block-shaped 'bookcases' that looked like the books had been drawn on one dot at a time, but the music--!

"If I hadn't been here for a few months already, I'd think I was losing my mind," Owen sighed, watching the lava spark and pop outside in the store's sudden, unexpected moat. "Actually, jury's still a bit out on that, come to think."

This week hadn't been so bad. Certainly, Owen had sensed a few more... mishaps... in the area, but his senses didn't actually extend to knowing why, and. Well.

So he showed up reasonably early, and by the time anyone entered, they'd catch Owen humming an old tune to himself while he took books from one place and put them somewhere else.

Not all of them needed to be put elsewhere; he just wasn't in the mood to lounge just yet.

Owen's head had been going haywire every night, these past few nights. Ah, it was bad enough during the day, but at night, when he could identify all the monsters wandering about outside... it didn't allow for a lot of sleeping.

Hopefully Nina would forgive him for opening up the shop, sitting down for a moment, and...

... passing out.

Sleep. Sweet sleep.

Well, Owen had gotten turned around on at least seven seperate occasions, and he'd almost blown off the whole affair in favor of sitting in his room and eating... something.

Except then he'd remembered that the delivery people were no longer... doing their delivering. And he hadn't been here last weekend. And so he trudged obligingly towards his workplace, where he patted a book on the head (just to be certain) and settled behind the counter.

"Random hazards popping out of nowhere," he sighed. "Almost feels like home."

It was a beautiful day outside!

Nina's explorations hadn't yielded anything strange or bitey or dangerous that wasn't usually strange or bitey or dangerous around the island, when it wasn't messing around with their locations, and she'd sent out an email, on Friday, after all that meant now that it was definitely looking really great for the week?

ONSEN PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What was that? Island-wide texts were obnoxious?

Well, like, whatever, the water was great! The sky was back! There was no possible way a party like this could go wrong, right?

… Right?

Well, it wouldn't go wrong today, anyway!

"Well, it's certainly cheery out there."

Did Owen expect the books to speak back? Of course he didn't. He wasn't an idiot. But some days, when the outside was just that dreary, you had to indulge a bit. Say the ridiculous things. Go with the whimsy.

"Doesn't seem like the sort of place they'd treat a book right in either," he added to the bookcase. "You lot are lucky, you're all safe in here with the fantastic Owen Corley and his dusting... rag..."

He squinted at it.

"...of wonder."

It was a mightily pleasant week so far, wasn't it? Owen came to work whistling, with the occasional skip. It was a lot easier to segue back into his regular, brilliant, upbeat self when the island wasn't frustrating him at every turn.

He was humming as he went through the stacks, making sure everything was dusted and cleaned up and put in the right place.

Were the books humming back? Perhaps they were.

This week, he was intent on not letting anything throw him off his stride.

"Well, I suppose at least nothing seems to have drowned."

Owen arrived to the Bookbelt fashionably late to open up. The lock creaked a bit. As, as it turned out, did much of the insides. "Since when do we have metal shelves?" he wondered. "And... are those fluorescent mushrooms? Did we go home unexpectedly?"

Beat.

"No, they'd be bigger."

He shook his head, cleaned up a bit, and then sat down to lounge behind the counter.

Owen was fine.

Sure, he'd spent the better part of the past week - all right, the entire past week - locked inside his room trying... to make sense of the weekend-- yes, sense was the right word, just making loads of sense, ha ha. And so maybe he hadn't returned any of Nina's messages.

It happened! Sometimes he was forgetful!

He arrived to Book Haven with a smile practically tattooed onto his face. Unlocked the doors, and... found himself facing a massive expanse of water.

"You must be joking," he muttered.

Did that... did that mean he could go back to his room? Or did he have to swim, or...?

He had no idea.
