It wasn't Cable's usual day, but he wasn't the kind of man who got thrown off by things like normal and usual.

He did spend a lot of time in the back today, rummaging around the store room, tacking up maps and playing around with radios. But since that was in the back, firmly behind a locked door, no one would see it.

They would, however, see the jaunty We're Open! and Now Hiring signs hanging outside. And the door was open.

He would hear you.

The doors opened on Wednesday, as they hadn't in some time.

Cable flipped the We're Open! sign on the door, then retreated inside. Was that a new shotgun attached to his hip? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.

Enter the store, and you'd find him behind the counter, flipping through channels on what looked like an ancient radio.

While the weather seemed to be on-again-off-again sputtering rain today, the island, perhaps recognizing that outdoor job fairs didn't tend to work well in the rain, had provided a large canopy in the park, under which numerous booths were neatly set up, awaiting employers to fill them. Notices had handwavily gone out advertising the event, and so the usual contingent of food vendors had congregated on the outskirts of the park, shaking off their summertime 'this is for Wednesday' mindset in order to provide cheap fried goods to folks who were swinging by as an excuse to get out and be social today.

There, the island had done its part. Fandom's locals were welcome to do whatsoever they pleased with it from here.

The door at Wellspring Arms had been closed for several weeks.

This morning, it was open. The NOW HIRING sign was back on the door, as was Come In, We're Open!.

Where had Cable been these past few weeks? He wasn't saying.

He was, however, sitting behind the counter.

The Now Hiring and the Come In, We're Open sign were back up at Wellspring Arms. This time, though, Cable wasn't inside, behind the counter, or doing anything out back.

He was sitting on the steps of the building, his legs stretched out.

He'd been working on the shop for so long, he hadn't really had the chance to catch the local smell. See the life of it. Someone else might have gone for a walk, or gone to the bar.

But not Cable.

He'd be on the steps, with a few cans of soda in the morning, and a few cans of beer in the evening.

The store was open, though.

It had been a long few days, though Cable was not going to tell anyone what he did or what he had to kill to return Wellspring Arms to something of a manageable state. Nor did he tell anyone about what he found in the back, or what he was planning to do with it.

No, he simply strode outside on Wednesday morning, hung a cheerfully rustic 'Come in, we're open' sign on the door below the NOW HIRING sign, and patted the door.

Then he slipped right back inside.

Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center was open for business.

There was, for a brief moment, a flash of light, on the street just outside Wellspring Arms.

Then it faded.

What remained was a man - not a tall man, but still an intimidating man - wearing battle gear, an infinity scarf, a metal arm, and a remarkably neutral facial expression for someone with a jaw as strong as his. "No, I didn't," he muttered to himself, for reasons that did not seem immediately obvious.

He held the metal arm up in front of the door. The door made a noise, a zooming, trembling sort of noise. Then it parted, allowing the man in.

...

...

And then Cable stopped, right on the treshold, and stared into the mess that was the disused shop.

"What the shit."
