Now that everything in her apartment had been neatly packed up into meticulously sorted, labeled boxes (except for those three boxes of miscellaneous stuff that were going to cause her angst, as anything that defied her obsessive-compulsive tendencies was wont to do) and hand-written, overly flowery goodbye notes had been left at the post office for all her employees, Lacey stopped by the diner to wrap up a few last things and found it --

Well.

The sign out front was already different, even. Talk about your quick turnover.

At least she could still get in, and she pushed the door open and called out, "Hello?"

[OOC: For the new proprietor first, but if anyone wants to bug Lacey before she goes, go for it -- SP may be a thing, since I'll be out at a show this evening.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
It had been several things, really. A call from Emma Leroy asking Lacey what she thought of several proposed menu changes at the Ruby. An entire list of Hank's latest mishaps in vivid detail (and how Wanda had managed to cram that much of a smug, envy-inducing undertone of heh heh, sorry you missed it into an email, Lacey had no idea). A weird dream that had involved gophers, Fitzy losing a mayoral election to Emma, Brent selling Corner Gas, and her moving back to Toronto; it'd made her wake up feeling homesick. News about a kids' soccer team starting up in Dog River and wanting sponsors. Maybe the clockwork spiders had factored into it, too.

She was being pretty low-key about it for now, but Lacey wasn't bustling around prettying things up the way she usually did; paperwork was going to take up a lot of her time today. A little more spontaneity in her life wouldn't hurt, but she wasn't going to up and leave her employees in the lurch without making sure the diner was taken care of.

So paperwork: budgets, inventories, recipes, instructions, overly helpful lists. And if you squinted just right, maybe a little bit of wibbling while she was at it.

Today's Specials
Lettuce Cups with Stir-Fried Chicken
Mango-Ginger-Curry Soup
Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dogs

Luke's is open and, despite the manager's preoccupation today, still quite clean and shiny and (she hopes) welcoming.

[OOC: I'm too sleepy for OCD. Yeah, this is Lacey's last diner post, though she won't be leaving until Friday. Aww.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey couldn't rely on the wall planters to grow all the produce for the diner; there were some things she needed to rely on suppliers to get, although she made it a point of pride to source as locally and organically as possible. Case in point, the asparagus, a bunch of which had somehow ended up shoved to the back of the fridge and forgotten about for a while, then discovered this morning by the cook, who'd asked for her opinion on whether it was still good.

Lacey stared into the refrigerator at the bunch of asparagus, shriveled a little bit in its purple rubber band, as it jerkily tap-danced around the crisper drawer in a badly broken rhythm.

"No, no, I think . . . it's safe to say that asparagus has gone a little off." She'd get rid of it later -- somehow -- but wasn't composting supposed to be a less guilt-inducing method of disposing of your organic waste? Honestly.

Lacey had gotten a new blend of organic fair trade coffee in today; this was a good way to start the week, if you asked her, and it put a spring in a step and a lilt in her voice for about the first hour of the day.

When she happened to overhear the kitchen staff in the middle of a spirited discussion about whether anyone would notice if they replaced the fuel in someone's tank with the (as it turned out, really potent) coffee, it deflated her bubble a little -- which put her back down to about normal, tolerable levels of Lacey-chipper. So really, that all worked out.

She'd be keeping the coffee under close surveillance, though.

Luke's is open. And not any kind of filling station, thank you very m-- well, technically, if you counted stomachs . . . oh, all right.

The truth was that all the rain was getting Lacey down. Oh, she was trying not to show it, which only meant delving into a fit of forced manic cheerfulness that made it even more obvious that she was trying to overcompensate for something.

But the upshot of all that was that the dessert case in the diner today was filled with brightly-colored, elaborately frosted baked goods.

So it wasn't too bad, was it?

Today's Specials
Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Cherry Salsa
Chicken Parmesan Burgers
Olive-Oil Cake with Candied Orange

Luke's is open -- mind the sugar high from just looking at the dessert case.

[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
There were some mornings when she showed up at the diner and everything was normal. With the island in its current itinerant mood and the scenery across the causeway changing from week to week, 'normal' for Fandom was even more relative than it usually was, but that was sort of the point: 'normal' for Fandom was a constantly changing concept.

Still, Lacey didn't count on things like walking into the kitchen and finding a model volcano made out of bread, erupting oatmeal at a vigorous rate.

". . . not asking," she declared immediately, and headed back out to the front of the diner to leave that to the staff.

Today's Specials
Beef and Napa Cabbage Stir-Fry
Chicken Parmesan Burgers
S'mores Crepes

Luke's is open, and not in a terribly breakfasty mood today, it seems. Odd, that.

[OOC: Perhaps inspired by what happens when you try to cook steel-cut oats in a shallow bowl in a 1250-watt microwave.

. . . the OCD went where half the oatmeal did. :/]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
It wasn't that Lacey wasn't interested in going out and exploring the isladn's new surroundings today. She was. She really was!

It was just that, the more she thought about it, the more the prospect of all that sand intimidated her. Sand, with its tiny, gritty, abrasive little particles that got everywhere, and then if it got everywhere it just stood to reason that she'd track it everywhere, and then there'd be sand in her shoes and sand wedged between the cracks of the tiles in the diner floor and sand in her carpet at home and . . .

So she was staying right here. In her nice and (so far) sand-free diner. Yes.

Not because she was scared of the sand or anything, though!

. . . ignore the compulsive sweeping.

Today's Specials
Eggs, Hash Browns, and Steel-Cut Oats
Roasted Broccoli with Asiago
Slow-Cooked Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Luke's is open, and sand-free, by god.

[OOC: And OCD-free, and I don't even know.]

Last week's election results had been disheartening, at best, to say the least. The kitchen staff, in their own special way, were going to be asking Lacey questions about it all day, and Lacey, in her own special way, would be spending most of the day answering in far too much well-meaning but not entirely coherent detail.

In between questions and customers, she'd be contemplating writing notes to Fandom's other Canadian citizens, apologizing for Saskatchewan . . . and wondering if it was a good idea or a bad idea to include a postscript disclaiming that in her defense, she was from Toronto.

Being Lacey was fun sometimes.

Today's Specials
Smoked Ham, Roasted Radicchio, and Cheese Panini
Bacon-Wrapped Eggs with Polenta
Potato Leek Soup

Luke's is open, and blunderingly, earnestly civic-minded. North of the border, anyhow.

. . . how does that work when currently in Iceland? Don't answer that.

[OOC: Oh, I am so not awake enough for OCD. Also I blame [livejournal.com profile] shagthis.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey didn't mind the change in temperature much, to tell the truth. The Vikings, on the other hand . . . well, they got a lot of side-eye looks from her. Fandom was much more accommodating of her menu quirks than Dog River had been, but she had no idea how these guys would take it -- and were there health inspectors to worry about, wherever they were now?

That was the question that had her all nervous and flustered as she bustled about the diner today. Really, the only reason she wasn't completely out of her mind with nerves? She'd done her civic duty and cast her absentee ballot last week. Go, team Lacey.

Luke's is open, and despite the weather outside, the culinary theme of the day is still spring, darn it.

Lacey was expecting a quiet week, or at least that was what she was hoping for; expecting it might be the same thing as jinxing it, given her luck, and did that mean that she'd already -- okay, no. No thinking about that too much.

Better to just polish the napkin dispensers and wipe down the counters with an almost obsessive fervor, probably, which was . . . what she'd be doing most days anyhow. There was just a little extra frantic vigor behind the cleaning routine today. If anybody asked, she'd call it residual Easter enthusiasm.

. . . yes. Right. That'd work.

Five Bean Salad
Grilled Citrus Chicken
Sausage Risotto with Spring Greens

Basically, the minute Lacey had figured out what was going on with the island on Saturday morning (namely, with the small children) she'd battened down the hatches and settled in to weather the storm.

. . . otherwise known as spending the entire weekend on the couch, watching cheesy old movies, and by entire weekend that was to say that sleep had been entirely optional.

So someone was more than a little zonked out today, but if at any point she'd dozed off with her face practically in the mug of coffee that accompanied her absolutely everywhere today, she'd pass it off as a silly little rumor started by the busboy. Not that anyone would be likely to believe that claim.

Today's Specials
Chicken Parmesan Burgers
Risotto with Butternut Squash, Leeks, and Basil
Creamy Farfalle with Salmon and Peas

It was a sad, sad statement to make that someone who ran a diner and had a certain passion for food could have traumatic associations with certain ingredients now, but Lacey had spent most of the weekend running from ambulating mushrooms and getting lost in various pipes.

Which was why, when the cook approached her in the morning and asked if she thought a mushroom frittata would be a good idea for a breakfast special, the heretofore-unrealized bad influence that over a year of doing radio broadcasts with Katchoo had had on Lacey's vocabulary made itself very, very amply known.

Today's Specials
Ham and Cheese Omelet
Pineapple Teriyaki Burger
Roasted Asparagus and Baby Artichokes with Lemon-Oregano Aioli

If her weekend might have turned out at all eventful, Lacey wouldn't know; she'd ended up going back to Dog River for a few days, and made it back just in time to get a couple of hours of sleep and then head in to work.

So if there was a distinct lack of energy to the diner's manager today, she felt it was justifiable, and if anyone needed her, she'd be behind the counter, hovering over the coffee machine and availing herself of its caffeinated product with an embarrassing frequency.

Spring Greens and Lima Bean Soup
Artichoke and Turkey Panini
Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Roasted Baby Carrots

There was a miniature potted tree on the counter this morning when Lacey came in, bright and cheerful in its shiny foil-wrapped planter with tiny colorful fruits hanging from its branches, and it got an excited little "Awwww!" out of her when she spotted it.

Upon closer examination, though, she realized that the fruit dangling from the tree's miniature limbs was, in fact, miniature peppermint candy.

"All right. I know this is Fandom, but come on now," she announced to the as-yet empty diner.

The diner didn't (mercifully) have a comment in response. Neither did the tree.

Hank Yarbo had decided to start a blog, Lacey had learned over the weekend, thanks to an email from Wanda that was so smug that Lacey could practically hear the laughter coming through her computer speakers.

It was, as she'd discovered last night, a horrifying trainwreck of a thing, all incoherent rambling and subject pinball and . . . very, very Hank. It was also -- well, a trainwreck. She couldn't look away. So don't mind the proprietor of the diner today if you happened to catch her staring at her laptop and occasionally letting out a loud and thoroughly undecorous guffaw. It was going to be the theme for the day.

Lacey was in an odd sort of mood today; she'd found a roll of blue masking tape dangling from a branch on her way into the diner this morning, and used it to outline a hopscotch court on the tiles of the diner before she opened up.

Anyone looking through the windows might see her taking the occasional hopping runthrough, concentrating fiercely in fine elementary-playground style. Definitely an odd mood, and one that appeared to have influenced the menu.

Luke's is open. No, there isn't a jungle gym. Sorry.

The very beginning of the workday passed without incident, which in Lacey's frequently-too-neurotic opinion was a rare enough occurrence that she was grateful for it. That state of affairs was short-lived, though, and doomed from the moment the busboy and the cook got into a heated debate about whether or not the optical illusion postcard on the bulletin board had distorted-looking squares, or non-distorted squiggly shapes.

"You're both wrong," Lacey said once she'd had it with both of them. "It's a camouflaged sabertoothed tiger, and it's coming to eat you both."

She didn't really care if they shut up because they thought she was weird, rather than because she'd successfully intimidated them, as long as they shut up.

She'd come to regret that by the point in the day where they were both standing in front of the board, staring at the postcard and thoroughly hypnotized.

How had it gotten this close to the end of the month already? Lacey had no idea, although she blamed part of her own inability to keep track of the time on getting far too distracted looking up recipes for the vegetables her in-house planters seemed to be intent on growing all on their own.

It kept her from sighing too much over not being in Hawaii, at least. And the diner smelled (she thought) pretty good. Warm and inviting, even.

Lacey had kept up on the radio broadcasts and knew exactly what was going on this weekend (despite the fact that it had been prom weekend she'd marked up on her calendar with big red Sharpie exclamation points and warnings about watching out for balloons), so she'd made a point of hiding out for most of it. There wasn't much she could do other than brave the possible children and head into work today, though, and so she'd tried to quell her own anxiety by throwing herself into planning the day's menu with a desperately maniacal fervor.

She'd been in the middle of congratulating herself for the delicious-sounding yet vegetarian specials she'd come up with when she remembered that the entire reason she'd started to put so much effort into planning vegetarian food options wasn't around any more.

It took a lot of the perk out of her demeanor as she bustled around the diner today.

You'd think Lacey ought to have been frustrated by the sudden influx of rose petals all over her diner, just on account of the mess they made.

Oh, no. Lacey thought they were downright adorable. Filling up two drawers of her cash register, sure, but adorable -- and they made such a nice decoration for the dessert case, and maybe she could come up with some creative plating arrangements today, and, and, and . . .

In between the book she'd found stashed beneath the counter (when was she going to need to know how to run away from, say, an ocean liner?), the delivery that still didn't contain the nails she'd been expecting but did contain watering cans for some inexplicable reason, and the sudden abundance of spinach in her planters, Lacey was having a perplexing kind of morning.

That didn't ease up at all when, in the process of harvesting the spinach, a bottle of white glue, a box of crayons, and some pipe cleaners fell out of the planters (or maybe thin air) at her feet.

". . . I'm growing elementary school supplies now?" she asked with a groan. And just . . . gave up asking, right then and there.

Lacey was expecting a special delivery today; she'd spent the weekend collecting, matting, and framing some new artwork for the diner walls, and all she needed was the set of picture-hanging hardware she'd ordered.

. . . the shipment that did come in was large, and bulky, and not at all what she expected.

"A white lawn chair? But I ordered nails . . ."

Suspicious glances at the kitchen staff yielded nothing but helpless shrugs and mumbled denials, so Lacey sighed, picked up the lawn chair, and headed for the storage room. "I guess this can just go back there with the tricycle planter for now."

Today was typically Sookie's day, but in between the blizzard and Sookie leaving her a message about not making it in today, Lacey took it up on herself to make sure the diner was at least open for anyone who might be stuck out in the cold. So it was simple fare on the specials board today: lots of hot soups, stew of both the meat and veggie varieties, hot chocolate, tea, and coffee. Just the sort of stuff that'd warm you right up, and didn't require any special market runs.

Look, Lacey was from snowier parts of Canada, but she wasn't that foolish that she'd go blundering out into this weather more often than absolutely necessary.

[OOC: Sookie's absence modded with permission, and mod your service today, please! This is mostly up for the benefit of Shunsui's class. ;)]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey still didn't know why exactly the squirrels had decided to herd her into the radio booth yesterday to make that announcement, but she was still firmly convinced that this meant they had some kind of weird platonic wee squirrelly crush on her.

She thought it was sweet, and in her strange overcompensating way had decided to make them a rum and nut cake as thanks. Of course, it was an interesting contrast to today's specials, chosen in light of the surprisingly warm weather, but that was all right; this cake wasn't meant for human consumption.

. . . which didn't mean she wasn't using human food-grade ingredients. Smart squirrels and all.

Luke's is open, and summery, and kind of nutty. Some might point out that on Mondays, that last statement is a given if you interpret it the right way . . .

Don't ask why Lacey had taken a wild notion to thoroughly clean the cash register, right down to every little crevice between the keys. (In reality, she'd had a fairly vivid nightmare that involved adorable yet bitey plush bacteria squirming out from between the keys in giggling, gleeful hordes, and had woken up shrieking, then run straight for the disinfectant in her kitchen. She was not sharing this information with anyone, thank you.)

But that, at almost any point in the day you might choose to peek in, was exactly what she was doing in between serving customers and arguing with the kitchen staff that just because you had an allergy to shellfish it did not mean you were from Venus.

Yes, all day. Anything to purge the horrifying dream imagery from her brain, okay?

The year was starting off on an interesting foot for Lacey -- almost literally, given the single designer boot that dropped out of thin air and hit the floor in front of her just as she walked through the diner's door this morning.

Lacey'd shrieked, and flailed, then quickly recovered herself to take a deep breath, in then out, eyes closed. Right. "No, no," she declared loudly to the as-yet empty diner, "I'm turning over a new leaf. I refuse to take this as a bad sign of anything this year. It's a good sign."

Silence.

". . . good sign of what, I have no idea yet."

If she'd been hoping to get an answer to that not-quite-question, it wasn't going to happen today, but at least no bad signs had seemed to crop up so far?

Luke's is open, and despite initial appearances to the contrary, shows no sign of unexpectedly metamorphosizing into a purveyor of fine footwear. Honestly.

[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
It wasn't usual for Lacey to spend all day at the diner on a Thursday, but with the end of the year (ack! How did that happen?) looming she'd been struck by the compulsive need to take thorough inventory, evaluate what new supplies and equipment she might need, and make sure everything was in as neat and well-documented a state as she could get it.

The idea of starting a fresh new year on that kind of footing appealed to her. What could she say?

The staff was a little bummed about her constant presence today; that wasn't likely to change as part of turning over a new (hydroponically grown right here, as fresh and local as it could get) leaf for a new year. Hey, some things had to stay constant.

Christmas in Dog River had been surprisingly nice, actually, and it had been good to see everyone again -- yes, even Hank. Lacey missed it there, but the Ruby was in good hands with Emma (even if Emma did keep hinting that some of the menu changes she'd made were a huge hit thanks to things being much less big-city-fied now) and she had a diner to run in Fandom, and people to keep fed there.

So the first portal out of Saskatchewan this morning had dropped her off back on the island, and she'd wasted no time in getting everything bright and shiny and ready to go for anyone who might be around at this point in the break.

Although she could swear the vegetables in the wall planters seemed a little droopy, as if they'd missed her.

That was what she was telling herself. Hush.

More baking this week, of course; pfeffernusse and gingerbread and almond snowman cookies and really, Lacey, were you trying to compete with J,GoB? No, of course not; it was just that it was in the holiday spirit and all!

As the diner was, even more so than she'd planned; the fresh wreaths and candy canes and little brass bells she'd hung up were lit in the multicolored glow of Christmas lights that hadn't been there before.

Lacey? Absolutely squeed.

Luke's is open, and glowing with Christmas cheer. Literally, in some respects. Bask in the Christmas cheer. BASK IN IT.

[OOC: The OCD washed away in the rain. Extreme SP warning in effect again today, and AFKness for most of the evening as well, so . . . yeah.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey's grand plan of making sure the troopers and police force were supplied with food and coffee over the course of last week hadn't exactly gone according to schedule, but that was hardly her fault when the storage closet had locked her in and not let her back out until this morning, was it? (In retrospect she'd probably been safer that way, but it was hard to be appreciative when you were still picking pinto beans out of your hair, and all you'd done in the first place was go in for a pack of coffee filters.)

In short, she was irritable, and slightly traumatized, and very much in a mood for therapeutic baking -- which was why, after a quick trip home to shower and get a fresh change of clothes, she promptly commandeered the oven, made the kitchen guys work the front, and proceeded to indulge herself with a lot of consolatory confectionery.

Had she actually managed to listen to the radio last night, Lacey might've had more misgivings about coming in to work today. But Saturday's pastry precipitation had --

Inspired her to bake. This sudden motivation didn't in any way, shape, or form have a thing to do with the inexplicable and quite frankly sad need to prove (to herself) that she didn't have to worry about being outdone by Fandom weather of all things. Of course it didn't. Why in the name of the diner's overly-full pastry display case this morning would you ever have reason to think that? Look, anyway, the point here was that she'd been so occupied in an all-out baking blitz in her kitchen that she hadn't gotten around to the Sunday night broadcast.

Despite the season and the cold temperatures outside, the plants inside the diner were, thanks to Lacey's obsessive care, lush and verdant, blanketing that entire wall of the diner (and those spots of the ceiling from which hanging planters dangled) in bright, cheerful green.

You'd think this would be an uplifting sight, the kind of thing that ought to brighten the day of the diner's proprietor upon entering first thing in the morning, but Lacey had spent several hours last night parked in front of her TV, decked out in Saskatchewan Roughriders gear out of some slightly desperate need to show solidarity with people thousands of miles away and unaware of her efforts, only to watch the Riders lose the CFL championship game for the second year in a row to the Montreal Alouettes.

So as soon as she saw that bright, vitamin-rich wall of vegetable green?

". . . oh, sure. Rub it in."

The staff didn't get it, but they thought football with only three downs and the goalposts at the front of the endzones instead of the back was slightly delusional anyway.

Today's Specials
Cauliflower Gratin with Mustard-Sage Cornbread
Chicken Cutlets
Spaghetti and Meatballs

NOW HIRING - See Manager for Details

Luke's is open, if in a bit of a post-Grey Cup slump.

[OOC: And the OCD went wherever the hell Durant's ability to throw a goddamn complete pass last night did. Not that I'm bitter about that game or anything. REALLY.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey'd had the weirdest dream last night about being in a tiny spaceship riding through somebody's brain. It'd been interesting, but a little gross until the random unicorns showed up, at which point it had just turned surreal . . . she really wasn't questioning it too much.

It might have had something to do with the vegetarian nature of the specials board today, though.

Today's Specials
Cannellini Beans with Kale
Potato Gratin with Mushrooms and Gruyère
Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie

NOW HIRING - See Manager for Details

Luke's is open . . . no, there aren't any actual unicorns frolicking about. Lacey might be a little disappointed about that.

[OOC: The OCD is still asleep, like I wish I was. I . . . completely blame Dar Williams for doing the most adorable rendition of "The Babysitter's Here" ever last night, and thus for inspiring this post. Also epic SP warning today, blaaaaaaaah.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
. . . right, so the less said about what she'd been up to last week, the better, Lacey decided; she was just going to steadfastly ignore any amused looks or muttered comments from the staff, go about her business, and . . .

Spend a lot of time inventorying the stockroom, apparently. Who knew if there were the right number of beans in those bags of pinto beans back there, after all?

Today's Specials
Smoked Turkey, Apple, and Cheese Quesadillas
Chicken and Fall Vegetable Pot Pie
Vanilla-Spiced Caramel and Pear Tart

NOW HIRING - See Manager For Details

Luke's is open, and Lacey's around . . . somewhere.

[OOC: OCD is itemizing grains of rice, diner is open, caveat that today I may be extra slow is in effect. Oh, Monday.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Yes, Lacey was a proponent of talking to plants as a way of encouraging them to grow. No, it wasn't unusual for her to be spotted doing just that with the vegetables in the diner planters these days.

"Look at you, aren't you just a nice healthy bunch of spinach? All . . . robust, with shiny, shiny leaves . . . boy, I bet you're just chock full of chlorophyll and nutritious goodness, aren't you? And you -- I don't think I've seen lettuce that crisp and fresh in a long, long time. . . ."

Yes, she was petting the veggies. Shut up. Her life was kind of sad.

Today's Specials
Green Beans with Bacon and Chestnuts
Potato Gratin with Mushrooms and Gruyere
Cranberry and Wild Blueberry Pie

Luke's is open, and . . . yeah, the kitchen staff won't judge you for staring.

[OOC: The OCD is off trying to get three stars on all the Angry Birds Halloween levels for me. Dude, don't look at me; I don't even know about this post.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey did not want to talk about the unfortunate ramifications of an overambitious pumpkin-carving plan that had resulted in her being . . . let's just say she never wanted to deal with pumpkin guts again, okay?

It explained why she still twitched every time one of the kitchen guys would walk casually within earshot and make squishy sounds, really.

But she wasn't going to talk about it; thankfully, she could throw all her energy into tending to her hydroponic planters instead. Nooooooo pumpkin guts involved there.

Today's Specials
Sugar Snap Peas and Potatoes with Parsley Pesto
Winter Squash Soup with Fried Sage Leaves
Rosemary Roasted Potatoes
Butternut-Squash Parsnip Soup with Thyme

NOW HIRING - See Manager for Details

Luke's is open, and yes, menu item substitutions are available upon request. So long as they're not unreasonable requests. Or riddles.

[OOC: OCD has dissociated itself from me out of embarrassment that I went for the cheap and easy joke there. SP warning more in effect than usual since I might have to make an off-site run today.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
"What's with all the herbs, guys?"

The kitchen staff, who paid as little heed as possible to the planters, had no constructive answer (unless you counted incoherent mumbling) to Lacey's question.

"Well, okay then. Why not? Ooooh, is that -- well, it's about thyme."

If Lacey made it through the rest of the day without getting pelted with carrot tops and bread heels for bad punning, it would be a miracle. That was what she got for laboring under the delusion that she was hilarious.

Today's Specials

Sausages with Cider and Sauerkraut
Apple and Smoked Gouda Quesadillas (available with smoked turkey)
Salty Chocolate-Caramel Apples

NOW HIRING - See Manager For Details

Luke's is open. Pun-ishingly so.

[OOC: And OCD-free because I done say so, so there.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Let it be known that if Lacey had woken up yesterday to a noticeable drastic change of anatomical assets, she'd have deemed today completely and totally spoiled. But she hadn't, and a lot of the people who'd gone on the trip had come back looking different from usual, as did her kitchen staff, and Lacey . . . was finding her sense of unaffected smugness stymied by the feeling of being left out. Again.

Today's Specials
Three-Cheese Mushroom and Spinach Calzone
Chicken Parmesan Burgers
Creamy Asparagus Soup

NOW HIRING - See Manager For Details

Yes, that was an incredibly sad reaction to have to the whole thing. She was perfectly aware of that, thank you, which was why the planters (the veggies still looked healthy; yay for small favors) were getting an extra-vigorous tending job.

They could get extra sunlight today, reflected off the aggressively-polished counter surfaces, too.

Luke's is open, and this is perfectly normal, thank you, why would you think otherwise?!?

[OOC: OCD went wherever Lacey's genderswap did. Mwahaha.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Regardless of the ghost-town-like feel of the town over a break week, the diner must be opened, and opened it was today, with Lacey taking advantage of the quiet time to recover from her weekend's Thanksgiving trip back to Dog River.

Recover from the muscle strain of laughing at Oscar Leroy and Davis Quinton stuck like treed cats on a roof they were trying to repair, granted, but recover nonetheless -- while planning out holiday decor for the diner (maybe she could hang Christmas lights on the plants in the wall planters!), negotiating with the cream soda stock, and fielding repeated bratty reminders from the staff that Thanksgiving here hadn't happened yet.

She knew that, thank you very much.

Today's Specials
Brisket Braised in Porter
Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie
Turkey Chili

She'd actually gone through several turkey chili recipes on an online forum -- discarding a particularly horrifying one submitted by a woman in Mercy, Saskatchewan that involved a digestive-tract-melting amount of Scotch peppers -- before deciding on the one she'd gone with. Just for the record.

Luke's is open, and still feeling rather Thanksgiving-y today.

[OOC: OCD tried Sarah Hamoudi's turkey chili recipe and will be trying to get the chili taste out of its mouth for the rest of the day.

. . . I couldn't resist a gratuitous Little Mosque on the Prairie reference. JUST FOR YOU, [livejournal.com profile] shagthis. JUST FOR YOU.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
There were sugar snap peas in the planters, now; Lacey hadn't planned on those, but she'd stopped in over the weekend to pay the vegetables some compliments and distinctly recalled the phrase 'aww, that's sweet' coming up more than once. Maybe the unicorns had done the same a few days ago?

It actually made sense to her as a rationale now, and she'd just roll merrily on along without questioning that any further, thank you very much.

Today's Specials
Baked Eggs with Bacon and Spinach
Israeli Couscous with Asparagus, Peas, and Sugar Snaps
Shiitake and Snow Pea Stir Fry with Beef or Tofu

NOW HIRING - See Manager for Details

Luke's was open, and diversifying! Planter garden wise, anyhow.

[OOC: Also OCD-free. Also I want that stir fry myself now.]

Jaina had to work today, so no mixer for her. She wasn't sure how many people she'd get in here tonight with that going on, but at the very least she had a Zekk with her. One she was occasionally glowering at after she'd heard about him going to see John.

Everyone else would get a non-glowery girl, though. Probably. You never knew with her.
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey's planters had held up nicely, she was glad to see, and the spinach and broccoli were flourishing. She'd brought in a few of those hanging tomato planters to add to the display today, and was humming to herself as she perched precariously on a ladder, suspending them from the ceiling.

The staff kept yelling "Come on, fall! Fall!" from the kitchen, but to no avail; the dishwasher sadly noted to the busboy that it didn't work as well as it did when they snuck up behind her and yelled "BOOM!" while she was playing Minesweeper.

Today's Specials
Brisket Braised in Porter
Noodles with Stir-FriendFried Tofu and Broccoli
Sesame Spinach and Broccoli

NOW HIRING - SEE MANAGER FOR DETAILS

Luke's is open, and it's not a game, kitchen staff, God.

[OOC: The OCD -- and most of my post-writing brain -- melted in this ridiculous heat wave, mmmkay.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
A week in, Lacey was pleased to note that the hydroponic wall planters were still there, and thriving; she spent possibly far too long fussing over the plants (and talking to them, yes, she took the idea of talking to plants more to heart in Fandom than she would anywhere else) and making sure they had enough water and nutrients before she so much as started cleaning up the diner in preparation to open for the day.

The salad bar area -- relocated near the wall planters -- had pride of place today, stacks of plates arranged tastefully next to silverware and brightly-colored dishes of tomatoes, beets, yellow peppers, other pretty vegetables, and all the dressings and toppings she could think of. Dangling from fishing line over the salad bar was a neatly hand-lettered sign that read "NEW SPECIAL" -- Pick-Your-Own-Salad Bar!

Look, just because Dog River had given her crap over improperly using quotation marks for emphasis, it didn't mean she was above trying it again in Fandom. It had been long enough. (About that definition of insanity, Lacey . . .)

The specials board was up as usual, though.

Today's Specials
Broccoli Garlic Quiche
Spinach and Cheese Omelets
Spanakopita
Apple Fritters

NOW HIRING - SEE MANAGER FOR DETAILS

Luke's is open, and just chock-full of healthy entrepreneurial ambition, isn't it?
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey had been nattering on to the staff for a while now about a hundred little initiatives they could all take to be more environmentally conscious around the diner: CFL lightbulbs, more ecofriendly soaps and cleaning supplies, installing timers on the lighting, being careful about how often they opened the fridge, yadda yadda yadda.

She'd ordered the soaps and cleaning supplies over the weekend, come in this morning with a bag of CFL lightbulbs to tackle the kitchen and supply room lighting installations, and -- discovered that the walls had somehow sprouted wall planters of spinach and broccoli overnight.

"Boy, when I said I wanted to go green, this isn't exactly what I had in mind."

Today's Specials
Cobb Salad (with or without bacon)
Spinach and Mushroom Omelette
Penne with Hazelnut Gremolata and Roasted Broccoli

NOW HIRING - SEE MANAGER FOR DETAILS

Luke's is not a greenhouse, but it's open.
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey was expecting something to go awry today -- attitude from the soda fountain or some kind of battle of attrition in the crisper drawer. Something.

So far, nothing untoward had happened.

She'd take that as a good sign . . . but she'd spend most of the day with a spatula within reach, just in case.

Today's Specials
Tuna Sandwich
Grilled Vegetable and Mozzarella Panini
Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Pudding

NOW HIRING - See Manager for Details

Luke's is open, back-to-school themed, and very wary.

[OOC: Also OCD-free.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
After Lacey had found out about Thursday's banana-split surprise incident, she had a Very Serious Talk with the kitchen staff about fair division of work, labor laws, and how didn't they think, well-meaning as it was, that was a little harsh of a way to spring the surprise on Francine?

The kitchen staff was entirely unmoved, and Lacey really couldn't fault their ultimate intentions, so . . . she let it go, and busied herself whipping up a batch of cookies, since she had a new bottle of organic natural Mexican vanilla she wanted to try out, and then there was an unfortunate incident with the dishwasher, a fit of sneezing, and a flying spatula . . .

Today's Specials
Grilled Salmon

Luke's is open and smells like . . . a cookie, really.

[OOC: The kitten did an amazing disappearing act and took the OCD with it. They're probably plotting evil together right now.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Lacey'd gone over the diner with the frenetic cleaning energy of someone who was trying to pretend she hadn't spent the last three days cowering in a corner with a cast-iron frying pan, and needed the reassurance that her business was really intact.

Now, after opening for the day, she was still cleaning ALL THE THINGS every surface and restraightening everything regardless of whether it'd been crooked in the first place or not. It wasn't necessary, but it made her feel better.

Today's Specials
Grilled Tri-Tip Sandwich
Rosemary-Lemon Grilled Turkey Cutlets
Dulce de Leche Cheesecake Bars

Luke's is open. And shiny. But most importantly, intact.

[OOC: Also OCD-free. OMG.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
Did Lacey open the diner door cautiously and edge inside with a broomstick clutched in both hands, doing a comically bad (yet unintentional) impression of someone sneaking through dangerous darkened corridors in an action flick?

***

Flash-cut to Agent Burrows in a slick all-black outfit with cool hair and everything, high-powered uptempo action music thrumming in the background as she KICKS the diner door down and brings her weapon to bear on ABSOLUTELY NO ONE --

LACEY: . . . um. Hello?

***

Of course not. Why would she ever do that?

Today's Specials

Artichoke, Cherry, Tomato, and Feta Salad
Grilled Chicken and Peaches with Chipotle-Peach Dressing
Blackberry-Blueberry Lime Tart

Luke's is open, and actually pretty boring today. Maybe just to spite Lacey and her suspicions.

. . . don't mind the footprint on the door.

[OOC: The OCD fell between the cushions of the soul-sucking couch that held me captive to sleep all weekend.]
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
It was a quiet morning and early afternoon for the diner staff, who were happy to be left to their own devices without their (they thought) overly anxious and nagging boss; they went about their work with as much chatter as they perfectly well pleased, didn't pay much mind to salt spilled on tabletops or napkins on the floor, and were, in general, having a grand old time.

Until afternoon, anyway, when a disheveled and traumatized-looking Lacey stumbled out of the storage closet clad head to toe in bright green Saskatchewan Roughriders team apparel and evidently -- judging from the unnatural orange color of the trails and puddles she left behind her -- drenched in Gatorade.

"Don't ask," she said, holding a hand up as she staggered through the diner and headed for the front door. "Just don't."

Today's Specials
Heirloom Tomato Salad
Baked Rigatoni
Cheesecake with Raspberry-Hazelnut Sauce

Luke's is open, and they didn't ask, but there was an uproarious burst of laughter after Lacey stumbled out and, presumably, home to shower.
[identity profile] laceycantlie.livejournal.com
It was a pretty typical occurrence for Lacey to walk into the diner and hear suspicious noises from the storage closet; she never did get the cream sodas to resolve their differences.

That didn't mean she'd ever stop trying, even if an outside observer might tell her that all her efforts only seemed to compound the already contentious carbonated conflict and so there she was -- once the counters were wiped down, the till was counted, the dessert case was presentable, and all the tables were arranged to her satisfaction -- strolling into the storage room with her hands held out.

"Okay, guys -- ack!"

What happened after that is a mystery, but anyone looking for Lacey might be looking for quite a while. Her one consoling thought before she got pulled in was that at least the specials for the day were squared away.

Today's Specials
Potato Salad with Pancetta, Rosemary, and Lemon
Napa Valley Basil-Smoked Burgers
Blackberry, Lemon, and Gingersnap Cheesecake Pudding

Luke's is open, proprietor-less, and . . . look, don't begrudge the currently in-absentia woman her trivial cause for peace of mind, as silly as it might be. Or at least, don't tell her if you do. Not that you can at the moment.

[OOC: Open, though service is entirely moddable today.]
