Glitter seemed to be a theme of the evening. There was glitter on the posters covering the walls, glitter on the plants printed on table cloths. Glitter on the fake full moon hanging in place of a mirror ball.

And of course, glitter on the banner hanging above the entrance.

Welcome to Homecoming 2012

Become a (wo)man.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer were making sure to say their goodbyes to the horses, just in case they were not here next week.

Firekeeper wondered how they'd do without others to properly talk to- of course, they had each other, and they were intelligent enough to make their feelings known even to those who couldn't speak the language of the Beasts. She'd have to tell Dani to make sure to keep them updated on the gossip around the island.

Today, the calves seemed more sad than angry. From what Firekeeper could gather through gentle (yes, she could be gentle, shut up) questioning, it had to do with the fact that they had never known their father.

With sympathy, she agreed that that was sad and offered the little animals an apple each. It seemed to satisfy them for the time being, at least.

Calves? Still there. Still angry. Whether their anger had something to do with the fact that they were still there or there was some other reason, Firekeeper couldn't tell. For all their complaining, the calves were being remarkably secretive about the reason for the complaints.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer had decided to just let them sulk it out, and so were studiously ignoring them as they traded gossip with the horses.

When Firekeeper and Blind Seer arrived at the Gig for their usual shift, they stepped into the barn only to be confronted by a pair of extremely angry young calves.

At least, Firekeeper was going to interpret their insistent moo-ing as anger. The creatures were very young, too young to really be truly coherent. But their actions definitely seemed to convey displeasure.

Firekeeper sighed and went to go get a bucket of water. She really hadn't the faintest clue what would make a baby cow happy, but if she could just get them to quiet down, that would be enough for now.

There were only the usual number of horses at the Gig today, along with the usual number of wolves. Who could all be found outside-

because the inside of the barn was inexplicably filled with watering cans. Nobody seemed to know how they'd gotten there or why- Firekeeper was fairly sure that even if Dani had gone on a landscaping kick, she wouldn't have needed that many. So. She was just going to ignore it and hope they went away, like the weird things that showed up sometimes usually did.

Blind Seer really, really wanted to know the logic in this. Every other transformation seemed to hit either both Firekeeper and himself, or miss them entirely.

Except this one.

So once again, today at the Gig you'd find one more horse than normal. And a bemused looking Firekeeper, who was using the picture button on her phone to snap a few. She figured Tahiri and Francine, at least, perhaps a few others, might be amused by these. ...If she could figure out how to send them.

Firekeeper did not have a mother to speak of, even if she had been able to contact anyone in her own world. Firekeeper did not even know there was some sort of festival associated with the day- even after four years in Fandom, her understanding of how the passage of time was marked was still rudimentary at best. Look, she remembered to come in to work once a week (well, excepting when there was some sort of festival at the school, granted), what more did you want?

She, Blind Seer, and the horses could all be found outside today, enjoying the warm if not precisely sunny weather.

Disregarding last year's meadfest with their friends the Vikings, it was a fine Fandom tradition that the graduation day was followed up by a grad brunch on Sunday, and this year was no exception.

The weather was okay, and a feast had been laid out in the park. A banner spelling out CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2012 hung from the trees, and there were tables and chairs spread all around, some covered by tents and some not. And at the center of it all, naturally as at any good Fandom event, were the tables of moddable foods and drinks.

Even cake. Fandom High graduation ceremonies might have been things of surprise dropbear terror, but the school did take care of its own when it came to food. It was a very good time for the graduates, along with their classmates, friends and families, not to mention random townsfolk, to gather and celebrate yet another class making its way through the challenge knowns as high school.

Just because it was graduation weekend didn't mean Firekeeper and Blind Seer were going to be remiss in their duties.

Especially since the horses wanted to hear all about the ceremony.

If anyone needed to talk to them, they could be found in the stables, re-enacting the fight scene for the benefit of the horses.

Given last night's activities of which the wolves were totally handwavily aware, damn you RL, Firekeeper and Blind Seer were totally unsurprised to come in to work and see the barn splattered with paint.

Luckily, the horses had escaped such a fate. Which was good, because Firekeeper didn't really want to hear the endless (albeit justified) complaints from them that surely would have generated.

It hadn't taken long for word to spread regarding the removal of the rabbits, gizkas, protopets... and most importantly, the School Board and the Howells.

The lack of needing to pretend they were a Perfectly Ordinary Boarding School meant that the uniforms could had to be disposed of.

Firekeeper wasn't sure what use she and Blind Seer would be in the meeting at the town hall, so she'd decided that they would just go to work as normal.

Perhaps if they'd been preparing for a fight, she might have attended, but this 'school board'? She honestly had no idea what to make of it. And so, for the time being, was ignoring it.

...The hay had all turned in to some sort of soft green plastic.

The horses, naturally, found this very disconcerting. As did Firekeeper and Blind Seer, although Firekeeper was currently occupied with the egg-shaped thing wrapped in foil that a bunny had showed up with earlier. The bunny had indicated in no uncertain terms that Firekeeper was to take it. But- now what was she supposed to do with it? She gave it a cursory sniff.

Ah! Chocolate. Well. That was easy enough.

Wolves in general adored children, and so Firekeeper was really quite fond of these weekends. She got to the Gig and set things up, explaining the island's latest mischief to the horses as she and Blind Seer went about their chores.

Perhaps some of the island's temporary residents would appreciate a horseback ride?

There was no bouncer at the entrance to the Community Center, all the better for any underclassmen to sneak into the night's festivities and pray that their own official final dance in Fandom would be half so...red. To be technical, the shade was rust.

Thankfully to the more practical among the StuCo Prom Committee, the Mars theme lended itself to plenty of starry twinkle lights and a decadant foggy mist rising from the dance floor that might just help the chaperones in their quest to look the other way when students got too handsy. That was really all that mattered at an event like this. Well, other than the food on hand and the ability for the punch to merge well with whatever spirits were 'accidentally' dropped into over the course of the evening.

For this was a night to be remembered! Even if all that stuck in the memories of the students was the terrifying spacemen floating around the giant papier mache Mars that dangled in place of a disco ball over the dance floor. Or perhaps it would be the fantastic flavor of the fiery fountain of cherry pie filling. Fake fire, of course, but the filling? Totally real and delicious. Even if it looked a little too much like fiery blood for some people.

In addition to yesterday's soap, there was now a crate full of mops at the Gig. Firekeeper, however, was just going to frown at it.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer hadn't the slightest idea that yesterday had been some sort of significant festival. Neither, it turned out, did the horses.

The horses also couldn't explain the tiny sugary things that had appeared everywhere. After some deliberation, Firekeeper tentatively tasted one.

It wasn't... terrible.

Apparently, the horses were feeling more ornery than usual today. Which Firekeeper and Blind Seer found out when they tried to get them to go outside for a brief run.

Fine, Firekeeper scowled, dodging Duke's teeth as he aimed a nip at her shoulder. We will stay inside, then. But don't blame me if you get bored.

So if you needed service today, everyone would be inside the barn, some sulkier than others.

It was that time of the year again: spring break, with its travels to far away and exotic locales! Like Brazil.

Teachers and students had been asked to assemble at the causeway as per usual. Their portal would be leaving early on into the afternoon, so there was plenty of time to pack up your things and hurry on down to catch it.

So, the question remained: was everyone ready for some fun in the sun? Or was there still too much bodyswappy freaking out to be done?

Stay tuned.

Firekeeper wasn't precisely oblivious to the fact that something was going on on the island that was affecting the sexual drives of... just about everyone.

She just didn't care, because procreation wasn't relevant to her (and the idea of sex for enjoyment was just... odd.). Blind Seer, on the other hand, had taken to spending a large amount of time prowling the woods alone, which is where he was now. For the meantime, Firekeeper was happy to sit and chat with the horses.

As they entered, tonight's guests were offered their choice of crown or tiara. Over by the photographer who doesn't have a thread because that's what happens when you post at 6:30 in the morning, there was a pair of thrones set up to really complete the theme.

The nice thing about working with horses was that they were fairly easy when it came to forgiving someone for coming to work late.

Especially when that someone brought apples to share.

Perched on a hay bale, Firekeeper munched on an apple of her own as she caught up with what the horses had done this week, a disinterested Blind Seer lounging nearby.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer were no stranger to finding odd things lying about the stables, and today was no exception.

Investigation into a barrel tucked into a corner (a barrel she was certain hadn't been there last week) yielded three potatoes, a tomato, and five apples.

Shrugging, she offered the apples to the horses and flopped down on a hay bale with Blind Seer.

Life is a gamble, and we're all players.

Here, victory relies on a relationship forged over thousands of years: the ancient connection between man and horse.

This is the world... of thoroughbred horse racing.

(Blind Seer, for the record, was extremely confused by this whole thing, but had learned some time ago to just go with it. At least he wasn't a pony this time.)

Firekeeper had long ago learned not to question certain of Fandom's... oddities. So when she arrived at the Gig to find Duke wearing a top hat, and a long purple scarf draped around Kally's neck, she didn't ask. And none of the horses offered an explanation, either.

She looked up in surprise as Blind Seer sneezed, and he looked back at her, his expression equally surprised at having found a pile of sand in a corner of the barn. Blue sand.

Numbers- and by extension, calendars- held very little meaning for someone like Firekeeper, so she hadn't really participated in last night's festivities. What did hold meaning for her was that this was her and Blind Seer's final semester as students here. She found herself wondering what would become of them afterwards. Would the portal back to their world open again, as it infrequently had during their many seasons here? Or would it stay closed, requiring them to take refuge in someone else's world?

The horses, as it turned out, were of very little help in this discussion. But the Gig was open!

Helplessness was not a feeling Firekeeper was accustomed to. Or very fond of (as if anyone really was). Unfortunately, a lack of reading skills meant there was really nothing she could contribute to any sort of research effort, so she was left at loose ends, frustrated and annoyed.

Hopefully distracting herself with the routine tasks at the stables would help a little. So, she and Blind Seer went to work as usual, perching on a hay bale as they chatted with the horses.

Not being all that literate, Firekeeper hadn't read the email (or the printout supplied by Annie) regarding Portalocity's recent... issues. She had, however, listened to radio and had made note of it that way. Of course, given that travel between this world and her own was already highly stable and unreliable, she supposed it didn't actually affect her.

The reports of people disappearing, though? That had both her and Blind Seer rather worried, especially since contact with anyone in Hawk Haven or Liglim was already near impossible. If any of their friends disappeared... they'd have no way of knowing.

Perhaps, Firekeeper mused, she ought to try calling Tahiri or Francine or Dinah rather soon (the ability to add an identifying picture to a 'contact' was something that had pleased her greatly when it had been pointed out). Just to... what was the term? 'Check up' on them.

So it was a rather broody pair of wolves that were taking care of the horses today.

Tamara and her puppy had spent most of yesterday exploring the woods, but today... today they knew they had a very important job to get to! They had to make sure the horses were fed and brushed and exercised and everything.

When they arrived at the stables, though, they found another little girl asleep in the hay bales. Tamara put her finger to her lips and made a shhhh noise as she greeted the horses. Maybe when the other girl woke up she'd want to play or help with the horses, but right now it would be rude to do anything but just let her sleep.

Firekeeper tended to pay as little attention to things like 'the passage of time' as possible, so really, she was entirely unaware of the whole idea of 'falling back'.

Luckily, the horses weren't really concerned with timekeeping either, so none of them really had much to say when Firekeeper and Blind Seer ended up showing up for their shift a little earlier than usual.

With no small amount of grumbling, Firekeeper had finally submitted to the fact that it was officially Time To Wear Boots again.

...Unless she was indoors. Which explained why she and Blind Seer were spending much of the day inside the barn with the horses, sprawled out on a hay bale.

This latest round of transformations had skipped Firekeeper because her paid account ran out, something for which she was grateful. She could swear the horses seemed almost disappointed though. Most likely they were looking forward to an excuse for spending another day being belligerent. Instead they got Firekeeper and Blind Seer, both in their usual shapes.

No, Firekeeper had not been in to work last week. And no, no matter how much Bold pestered her or Blind Seer, she was not going to let the horses know the reason why.

After yesterday, Firekeeper had done something she didn't normally do: took a shower. Which was not to say she didn't bathe, just that she normally did so in the creek or at the beach. But somehow being covered in ichor had made her feel like perhaps, just this once, scalding water might make a difference.

Especially since today was her day with the horses, and while they were by no means overly skittish creatures, she knew the week had to have been hard on them. No need to make them smell the taint of whatever wicked sorcery had created the monsters that had ravaged the island still on her skin.

Still, much of the morning was spent working with Blind Seer to coax the horses out, let them see that it really was back to normal. Or on its way to normal, anyway.

The blasted heath might be trying to devour the entire island, but it still hailed from one focal point. The campgrounds, now grey and full of ashes, held the source of the taint. A rock, so strangely hued, so alien-looking. The fissure it was in produced bubbles now under the last rays of the sun, sending the water trembling.

It was time to do something about it.

It would take work to draw all the grey out of the land, but concentrated effort might do it. After that, removing the rock might work - at least if the professors of Miskatonic University were right.

That was the plan.

But there were monsters on the horizon, playing and eating around the blasted heath, and they would not take any of this lightly.

Be ready, Fandom. It’s going to be a long day.

There were some things that Firekeeper felt she would never truly understand about Fandom. Like how people would wake up wearing shapes that were not their own. At least enough time had passed that it no longer angered her when such things happened. No, this time it was almost funny.

Because, you see, it hadn't been her that had transformed this time, but Blind Seer.

"I feel ridiculous," he grumbled as he trotted over to the barn. How was his mouth even managing human speech, anyway? This made no sense.

"You look ridiculous," Firekeeper offered, trying to hide her smile. She didn't know how long he'd be like this, but she knew it wouldn't be permanent, and that was enough. "Perhaps the horses will be glad to have a playmate who does not have claws today."

After his conversation with Karla the previous week, and the train wreck of a weekend he'd just experienced, Wesley, true to his word, trekked out to the preserve on Monday evening to set up what would be a memorial for Katniss. The preserve had obviously been a place of some significance ot her, given her avocation for hunting, and it just seemed natural to have it there rather than in a park or in the church. So that evening found him setting up candles people could light and sprigs of katniss and other flowers for people to lay down if they wanted to, and clearing a spot for people to congregate. There were blankets on the floor, since the nonstop rain lately had made the ground fairly wet, and seemingly limitless boxes of tissues.

There. That... that was a memorial. With all the candles lit, it would be a proper memorial, but until then, he lit one of his own.

Firekeeper didn't usually skip the welcome picnic, but yesterday she'd been- well, still sulking in her own way about Katniss having to leave. She still had Blind Seer, of course, but both of them agreed that the room seemed far too empty without their friend and hunting partner. At the same time, they were relieved to find that the school hadn't assigned a new roommate.

In any case, with all the new faces milling about, there was definitely some comfort in the familiar, although the horses were disappointed at the lack of gossip about new students.

It had been a couple weeks since Firekeeper had been able to get a proper shift in at the Gig, but then, the end of a semester- especially when it was also the end of the school year- was always like that. Busy. Which she didn't mind, actually, it kept her from dwelling on the fact that friends would soon be packing up and leaving.

Of course, the strange sugary things falling from the sky were also pretty effective at keeping her from dwelling on things. The horses had managed to nibble a few of them, and now had far too much energy to work off in the pasture.

The pasture which... what is wrong with this grass? Blind Seer bitched as he attempted to curl up for a snooze. Whatever it was, it was getting all tangled in his coat and that was not on.

Due to any number of factors, Karla and Warren had been planning to celebrate their shared birthday a little early this year. They didn't want to interfere with people's graduation or vacation plans, as a last hurrah before finals, making sure their off-island friends would be able to attend mun failure at remembering her own character's birthday, all of these had convinced them to throw their birthday party a few days before it actually occurred. As a party, it was intended to be just as much of a celebration of the approaching end of the semester as a birthday party.

What they hadn't intended was the entire island turning into small children over that same weekend. It was a good thing that credit cards and bank accounts had already been charged before hand, or things might have gotten really awkward. As it was, the company hired to make sure the party went off without a hitch got to Fandom, set-up, and drove off before realizing that anything was amiss.

Which was probably for the best, as it meant they didn't have to watch their equipment become slowly transformed into kidlet-appropriate games and activities by Fandom's magic. What had been a party setup designed to appeal to a bunch of jaded teens had become a brightly-colored wonderland of kids' toys.

Don't worry, though. There was still cake.
