The causeway [before classes, Tuesday morning]

The series of portals Anakin had managed to set up on short notice weren't the most direct way to get to District Thirteen, but they were the fastest. Anakin had checked four times to confirm when he realized they had a stopover in the Triassic era...

Now, as the sun peeked up over one of the allegedly happiest places on Earth (Anakin had other opinions on that), he waited for the rest of his fellow travelers to arrive while he left Tahiri a voicemail asking her to cover classes for him.

"This is the worst vacation ever," Karla mumbled, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She hoisted her emergency bag over her shoulder--and how telling was it that she now had one and left it packed and in her dorm closet?--and ambled over to Anakin. "You're looking better," she said, eying him. "Can we get details now?"

"I don't really have many to share," Anakin said, looking almost apologetic.

...for him.

"Katniss is in the hospital after getting shot on live television."

That woke Karla up a little. "Mother Night," she said, now looking worried. "Did Haymitch tell you her condition?"

Warren at least had the good grace to look apologetic as he stepped up to Karla. His wings were a little prickly looking yet. The pinfeather sheaths would take another day or two to crumble and leave actual, workable feathers behind, but he was doing a good job of not complaining about the itching, at least.

Or the claws. The tail and the fangs and the spots and the freaky eyes had gone, so Warren could probably cope with claws.

"I think I owe you ownership of a small Hawaiian island, by this point," he murmured, biting at his lip. "And a promise to never make you vacation in August again."

"It isn't your fault," Karla said, slipping her arm around his waist and trying not to wrinkle her nose at getting prickled by pin feathers. "...But I won't argue with you about no August vacations. Or Hawaii."

Wesley's expression was almost eerily serious as he arrived at the causeway, without any trace of tiredness in his eyes - just pure determination.

Although? Someone with a very discerning eye might notice that he was dressed just slightly nicer than usual. Yes, it was silly, but it had been months and he wanted to make a good impression.

Anakin gave him a nod. "We'll head out as soon as everyone else arrives."

Oh, there was fidgeting. Lots of fidgeting from the guy with the claws and the really, really rough looking wings. Warren hung back for a few minutes, just eyeing the back of Wesley's head while he tried to nerve himself up to approaching him.

"I think I really, really owe you an apology."

He hadn't been in his right mind when he'd attacked him on Saturday, but that didn't mean he remembered it any less vividly.

Wesley? Had not recognized the winged monster thing, although now he was rapidly putting it together.

"You..." he began inquisitively. Then he took in Warren's tattered wings, then the claws, and that was all it took. "Oh! Oh, it's no matter. I didn't realize -- ah -- that is to say -- I suppose I owe you an apology as well, then. Are you, er, healing all right?"

Yeah, sleepy brains at sunrise were for other people.

Gabrielle was used to up and leaving Fandom -- or any place, really -- at a moment's notice, and had only had to grab her travel satchel off the back of her desk chair on her way down to the weapons locker to pick up her staff.

"Is there anything we know for sure yet?" she asked without preamble. She could work with vague basics, but it didn't hurt to know more.

"Haymitch wasn't that chatty," Anakin said.

And also Anakin didn't like him.

"But Katniss is in the hospital--she got shot on live television, so someone isn't using their propaganda piece effectively."

Gabrielle sucked in a sharp breath. "Alive, though?" she had to check. Logically she knew that -- his wording said as much -- but there had been so much death associated with everything involving Katniss the last few months that even she gave in to the occasional impulse to assume the worst.

Luke had basically gone from spending a week training his army on the Princess Andromeda right to the causeway, with only about an hour's sleep and a shower in between. He was tired and was using the bag he packed as a pillow of sorts to lean his head against as he waited for everyone to show up.

"You look exhausted," Anakin said, a little concerned.

"Been working back home all week," Luke said, cracking an eye open to peak at Anakin. "Only just got back when I got your message. I'll be fine, though. Just need a nap or something."

It hadn't taken long for Firekeeper and Blind Seer to get down to the causeway. After all, as far as Firekeeper was concerned packing consisted of grabbing her bow and a quiver of arrows from the weapons locker. She didn't know what to expect, but a fight would almost certainly be part of it, and so she felt she ought to be prepared. Blind Seer, on the other hand (paw?) did not even have to worry about packing that much. And so, only a few minutes after receving the call, the pair was there and ready to go.

Anakin gave them both a smile. "I can't wait to see how District Thirteen reacts to meeting two wolves."

Firekeeper smiled in a way that was more a baring of teeth than anything else. "I will not try to scare them too much," she offered.

It was possible that she enjoyed the fact that she tended to unsettle people who didn't know her without actually trying.

Ghanima had stayed only long enough to make arrangements for Alice to cover her class before leaving to meet Anakin.

"Nothing good, I take it?" she asked, glancing at the assembled students.

He shook his head. "Katniss was shot and Haymitch finally called for backup. I can only imagine it's because he's needed backup for weeks."

By the time Jaina got to Fandom, she'd been going for a while, and was beginning to wish there was time for coffee. Then she started thinking about the last two times she'd been in the same room (physically or not) with all of these people and she wasn't thinking about coffee anymore.

She had her bag with her and made sure to turn off her comlink and slip it back into said bag while she waited.

Anakin walked over to give her a hug. "I'm glad you made it."

"Jaina," Ghanima greeting, giving the other woman a smile. "Thank goodness. I was starting to fear I would be the only adult going along."

She was teasing, Anakin. Mostly.

There was no way in hell that Warren was going to miss this, clawed hands, itchy, still-fledging wings, or otherwise. He still didn't look completely on top of his game, but if he was needed for anything...

Well, he'd be there.
