Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

Welcome to the reunion bash, everyone!

Yesterday's rainbow was still intact in the sky today, and the weather was pleasant and sunny -- maybe it was like Yang had said, and Pride got the island's stamp of approval. In any case, it was good parade weather. Sunscreen was still a good idea, though.

The parade route this year might be a bit different than it had been previously, starting up at the lighthouse to come down Jones Parkway, then east along Serendipity Place to Loon Drive, then down Unicorn Way to Apocalypse Avenue before turning back up Chimera Court to Mallard Street. It shouldn't be hard to follow the route, either: rainbow bunting was strung up between light poles, and Steph might have gotten a few of the businesses along the way to put flags up, too.

The route would take everyone to the park -- cleaned up after yesterday's festivities, amazingly, but there were still drinks and pastries waiting for everyone in the picnic area afterward. Hey, doing a parade on all those stairs deserved some kind of treat and definitely some rehydration.

[OOC: Come get your Pride parade on, Fandom!]

There was a rainbow. An actual rainbow arcing up over the island: a Fandom Pride tradition, actually, as Steph found out from one of the NPC workers helping with setup. (Which she wouldn't argue about; that was pretty perfect, if you asked her.)

And the park? It was an explosion of color, with rainbow pennant banners strung up over the picnic table area (where the tablecloths were in all the different colors of the progress Pride flag) and various Pride flags put up pretty much everywhere.

On one side of the picnic area a very large rainbow bounce house/inflatable slide formed the centerpiece of the carnival area, and yes, one side of the slide did dump people out into a rainbow ballpit. A couple of smaller rides and some games were spread out surrounding the slide, as well as all the booths set up by local businesses and groups.

On the other side of the picnic area was the stage, set up for karaoke or any open mic adventures people might care to have; beside the stage was a portable and semi-automated DJ setup, which explained the source of the music playing from the speakers whenever the stage wasn't in use.

Sure, it was pretty humid out, but arguably it wouldn't be Pride if you didn't have to remember to use sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Marc was the early riser of the two of them. Which was good because that meant he was able to listen to radio before Steven did and firmly decide who wasn't getting the body that day because hoo boy did Steven not need to hear that.

Had Marc lied to Steven and said he wanted to spend the day trying to meet people? Yes. Had Steven looked at him suspiciously but agreed to it? Yes. Did Marc feel guilty about it? Always, about everything Not in the slightest.

He didn't want to be cooped up in the apartment, however. So here he was at a table in the Perk with a coffee and an egg and cheese sandwich. He was pointedly ignoring his last text from Layla ("Someone you care about does things that frustrate you? Please tell me what that's like.") and instead focusing on his phone as he tried to figure out if living a few years in the past meant he could be keeping on top of twice as many Cubs games this season.

She pressed a button on her phone. "Expect the unexpected. Let's go, boys."

"We're going to the place that popular culture would like you to think is an automatic death-trap," Yang announced.

"Deserts take up about one third of the Earth's land surface, and usually have a large diurnal and seasonal temperature range, with high daytime temperatures and low nighttime temperatures. Seriously, day temps that can reach 45 °C/113 °F or higher. The dry desert air is incapable of blocking sunlight during the day or trapping heat during the night without water. Thus, during daylight most of the sun's heat reaches the ground, and as soon as the sun sets the desert cools quickly by radiating its heat into space."

"So, how are these deserts formed?" Yang continued. "Well, most deserts are formed by rain shadows; mountains blocking the path of precipitation. Deserts are often composed of sand and rocky surfaces. Sand dunes called 'ergs' and stony surfaces called 'hamada surfaces' compose a minority of desert surfaces. Exposures of rocky terrain are typical, and reflect minimal soil development and the sparseness of vegetation."

"Like I mentioned earlier, many people equate deserts with a hostile environment that conspires against human life," Yang said with a shrug. "In the popular media, desert areas seem to be considered to be at the top of the wilderness list for danger. The historical fact is, however, that on Earth, the human race was cradled in arid lands and people are well adapted to survive in deserts. Learning to be part of the desert's ecosystem, and not view it as an antagonist is the first step of desert survival. Preparation starts with how you dress. People stand upright and receive only 60% of the solar radiation that animals on all fours do. By adding a proper hat, with a wide brim and closed crown, the head and body are further protected. A common mistake made by new desert visitors is wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts. Loose fitting long sleeves and pants provide good air circulation and much better protection than sunblock."

"Deserts are defined by their lack of water. Learn to ration sweat, not water. By staying in the shade, limiting activity to cooler times such as night and using your available water, your chances for survival increase greatly. Sipping water does not get it to the brain and vital organs. Take a good drink when you need it. People have been found dead from dehydration with water in their canteens. Also, do not rely on tricks such as depending on solar stills as a primary water source. These will often produce more sweat digging the hole than is obtained from water gained. Learn to locate water through areas of green vegetation, flights of birds, converging animal trails and digging in the outside bends of dry creek beds."

Right on cue, the portal flared to life, awaiting its passengers.

"So today, we're going to Australia. Where everything wants to kill you!" Yang, don't sound so cheerful about that. "Larapinta trail, here we come!"

Was it awkward to have a child with her ex-girlfriend partner following her around? YEP. Yang was gonna go with a big YES on that one.

At least Bells seemed cool, and rather unruffled by everything so far. And the option of ice cream had been a big hit.

Which was why Yang and Bells were currently engaged in a contest as to who could eat a Skywalker Special the fastest, without getting an ice cream headache.

"On your mark, get set..." Yang said, reaching slowly for her spoon...."GO!"

They might both regret this later, but Yang was pretty sure this was quality mom-daughter bonding.

"We are getting the fuck out of here," Yang said, punching the button to summon the portal the moment her students arrived.

Did she look slightly hungover and like she's maybe just popped back in through another portal? Absolutely. Summer's shirtless cat cafe had been a big hit.

"Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall. The monsoon trough, alternately known as the intertropical convergence zone, plays a significant role in creating Earth's tropical rain forests. Even cooler, 40 to 75% of all species on the world's habitats are indigenous to the rainforests!!! Its been estimated that many millions of species of plants, insects, and microorganisms are still undiscovered. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth", and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world's oxygen turn over, often misunderstood as oxygen production, processing it through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and storing it as carbon through biosequestration."

"A tropical rainforest is a biome found within 10 degrees north or south of the equator, which is the center of the planet. They are common in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America, Central America, Mexico and on many of the Pacific Islands. And when we say rainforest, we mean rain! The minimum normal annual rainfall is between 1,750 millimetres and 2,000 millimetres in this climate region. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C during all months of the year."

"The rainforests are home to more species or populations than all other biomes added together. 80% of the world's biodiversity are found in tropical rainforests. The leafy tops of tall trees - extending from 50 to 85 meters above the forest floor - forms an understory. Organic matter that falls to the forest floor quickly decomposes, and the nutrients are recycled." Yang grinned. "They're pretty cool. It's not a biome that I've gotten to experience before, despite the fact I literally grew up in the woods. Totally different type of forest."

"In a rainforest, tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are the dominant plants, forming a leafy canopy over the forest floor. Taller trees, called emergents, may rise above the canopy. The upper portion of the canopy often supports a rich flora of epiphytes, including orchids, bromeliads, mosses, and lichens, who live attached to the branches of trees. The undergrowth or understory in a rain forest is often restricted by the lack of sunlight at ground level, and generally consists of shade-tolerant shrubs, herbs, ferns, small trees, and large woody vines which climb into the trees to capture sunlight. The relatively sparse under story vegetation makes it possible for people and other animals to walk through the forest. If the leaf canopy is destroyed or thinned, the ground beneath is soon colonized by a dense, tangled growth of vines, shrubs, and small trees called a jungle. Now, a lot of people thing jungles and rainforests are the same thing, but they are WRONG."

"Today you have two options. You can wander around the ground level, looking for medicinals and various creatures and plants, or you can climb the trees."

The portal flickered to life, and Yang gestured to it. "Okay, team. Let's go."

[personal profile] misshapen_spark
"Let's get explosive!" Yang cheered, after her team had assembled. "As in, one of my favorite terrains, the volcano!"

Yes, she was absolutely poking fun at her own explosive temper.

"In a bit, we're gonna head over to the place that most English speakers call Mount St. Helens -- known as Lawetlat'la to the Indigenous Cowlitz people, and Loowit or Louwala-Clough to the Klickitat --which is an active stratovolcano, most famous for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, at 8:32 am PDT which was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States," she stated. "Fifty-seven people and uncounted amounts of wildlife were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche caused an eruption, reducing the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 feet to 8,365 feet, and replacing it with a one-mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater."

"This little planet may look like a single solid mass with some water on top, but it’s really made up of several massive plates of earth and rock. These crustal plates are constantly moving and colliding with one another, creating earthquakes and the pressure zones that lead to volcanic eruptions. Underneath those sliding and colliding plates is hot, melted rock known as magma; it sometimes collects in areas of high pressure called, naturally enough, magma chambers. When this pressure builds up and becomes too great, the magma sometimes explodes upward in a great cataclysmic event. This is a volcano."

"Unfortunately, there is not much a single person can do to prepare for a volcanic eruption, but it is always good to have a good knowledge of them. Be aware of the hazards that can come with an eruption: the flying debris, hot gases, lava flows, potential for explosion, mudslides, avalanches, and geothermal areas. Prepare provisions, water, food, blankets, and medical supplies if you live around a volcano before anything happens. Also be ready to get up and outrun flowing lava . . . and yeah, I'm totally serious. Lava is fast. Above all, use caution when near an active volcanoes. Even if you've got a superpower, do not venture toward any activity, and consult local experts on the area. Follow all recommendations, regulations, or requests of officials."

"If you do become trapped near an active volcano, there are things you can watch out for. Stay away from lava flows. Not all of them will be red-hot and obvious; some move very slowly and appear as dark and solid, but are liquid beneath the surface. Also, do not try to cross an active flow; you might get trapped by multiple lava streams. Keep an eye on the Colcanic domes - Volcanic domes and plugs in craters may seem harmless, but they can explode without warning. Footing and glassy rocks can also be very dangerous. Some cooled lava of this sort can resemble jagged pieces of glass. Wear good, solid hiking boots on the mountain - never go barefoot. Be sure of your step."

"Be careful when crossing lahar - debris - flows, for they can gush in large and small floods. And above all, avoid areas where volcanic gas is released. Carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide can kill quickly and silently. You may not be able to hold your breath long enough. If you see a location around an active volcano with dead vegetation, carcasses, or bones, do not enter it."

"How can you prepare? If you live in an active volcanic zone, always assume that you may have to deal with the effects of an eruption. If you are in an area that could experience a lava flow during a volcanic eruption, know a quick route to safe ground. Once the eruption begins, if you're in a safe place, save water in your bath, basin, containers or cylinders at an early stage - supplies may become polluted. Stay indoors with as much as possible and wear mask and goggles if you go outside, to keep volcanic ash out of your eyes and lungs, and keep below ridge lines in hilly terrain - the hills will offer some protection from flying volcanic debris."

"So we're gonna start at the Johnson Ridge Observatory, named after one of the people that died that day. Then, we're gonna hike to the crater rim. I already got us our permits, and set-up the portal so that we're arriving first thing in the morning, and no matter how long we're there, the gnomes will get us back here with only one hour having passed. We can't go down into the crater itself, but that's for the best. First off, it's a fragile ecosystem. Second..." Yang had the good graces to look mildly abashed. "...I originally wanted to take us to Kīlauea in Hawaiʻi, but, um, there you can feel the heat under your feet, and I'm kinda magma-and-lava-reactive apparently? So, while Lawetlat'la is still active, it's WAY safer for us with the magma farther under the crust."

At that, the portal flickered to life, and Yang gestured for the group to go on through. "So let's go play on a death mountain!"

Come one, come all! It was time for everyone's some people's favorite event, maybe!

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES!!!

The bar was open before the dates, and maybe you hung out. Maybe you mingled. Maybe you signed up. Maybe you'd be surprised when Tino or someone else signed you up against your will! But regardless, a few minutes before 8 pm, Kitty hopped onto the stage, which was bedecked in a red sparkly curtain that someone had probably gotten on Amazon for $6!

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to this installment of Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You get three minutes to get to know that person. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Everyone have fun tonight!"

Or like, at least attempt it.

[Please hold for an obscene amount of OCD posted while babysitting! OCD is up! A regular bar post will go up later on Saturday. If I spelled anything wrong, it's because none of your characters' names make sense to me anymore.

When the boys arrived at the community center today, they'd find that Yang had made an obstacle course, modeled (vaguely) after rooftops and walls, about twenty feet off the ground, foam mats all over the floor.

"Parkoooooooooour!!!" Yang yelled, pumping her fist. "It's warmer and mostly dry, so we're going free-running around Fandom! In a bit! First, I want you to get a feel for it!"

"When lost or being pursued in a city, sticking to the streets is the equivalent of painting a target on your back," she said bluntly. "Especially if you aren't local; a stranger will stick out like nothing else, and sometimes an alternative view of your surroundings can be suuuuuuuper helpful."

"Parkour is the concept of moving from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible, using the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls — and is practiced in both rural and urban areas, though personally I think urban is more fun. Parkour practitioners are often referred to as traceurs. Why? I don't know, look it up."

"Now, parkour is an activity that is often categorized as an extreme sport; however, parkour has no set of rules." Fear the unholy gleam in Yang's eyes, boys. Fear it. "Most experienced traceurs think of parkour as a discipline closer to martial arts. It is often said that 'the physical aspect of parkour is getting over all the obstacles in your path as you would in an emergency. You want to move in such a way, with any movement, as to help you gain the most ground on someone or something, whether escaping from it or chasing toward it.'"

"The primary characteristic of parkour is efficiency. Practitioners move not only as rapidly as they can, but also in the most direct and efficient way possible. This characteristic distinguishes it from the similar practice of free-running, which places more emphasis on freedom of movement and creativity. Efficiency also involves avoiding injuries, both short and long term, part of why parkour's unofficial motto is 'être et durer,' which means 'to be and to last.' Those who are skilled at this activity normally have an extremely keen spatial awareness."

"So, today, we're going to start small, with the basic movements, since I don't know how much experience people have with this, and then we'll head outside and tear around Fandom."

"The weather suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks," Yang said, shifting from one foot to the other today, looking slightly gleeful. "So fuck it, we're leaving, and going to some place called Heron Island in Australia. Sounds fake, but whatever."

She opened one of the trunks sitting at her feet, and tossed some bottles of sun screen at the boys. "Hold on to that. You'll want it later."

"So, you may be wondering what sort of terrain you need to learn about with a beach. Sadly, we aren't going to master the art of the sand castle, or tanning, but we ARE about to go scuba diving. Water covers most of this planet, so being able to move through it is important."

"People go scuba diving for a lot of reasons, both personal and professional. Most people begin with recreational diving, which is performed purely for enjoyment and has a number of distinct technical disciplines to increase interest underwater, such as cave diving, wreck diving, ice diving and deep diving. No, we are not doing any of the extreme ones today." Gladio.

"Then there's the people who do it as a job, and not just teaching the recreational divers how not to die.
Most of these commercial divers are employed to perform tasks related to the running of a business involving deep water, including civil engineering tasks such as in oil exploration, underwater welding or offshore construction. Commercial divers may also be employed to perform tasks specifically related to marine activities, such as naval diving, including the repair and inspection of boats and ships, salvage of wrecks or underwater fishing, like spear fishing."

"Other specialist areas of diving include military diving, with a long history of military frogmen -- NOT as neat as that sounds -- in various roles. They can perform jobs including direct combat, infiltration behind enemy lines, placing mines or using a manned torpedo, bomb disposal or engineering operations. In civilian operations, many police forces operate police diving teams to perform search and recovery or search and rescue operations and to assist with the detection of crime which may involve bodies of water. In some cases diver rescue teams may also be part of a fire department or lifeguard unit."

She went on to explain how to suit up properly, as well as the basic mechanics of scuba diving. "But you don't have to take my word for it," she said, as the portal flickered to life inside the community center. "Let's go join the experts. And if you can't swim, well, I bet they have lessons for that too."

Was Yang basically bouncing in excitement when people showed-up today?

You bet your boots she was.

"What's up?" she asked, grinning, once people had arrived. "That's not a rhetorical question, 'cause today we are studying mountains, and rock climbing!"

Thanks, Gladio, for moving this up her list of things to do.

"The important thing to remember about mountains is that each one is different, depending on the size and location," she said. "High mountains, and mountains located close to the Earth's poles, reach into the colder layers of the atmosphere. They are consequently subject to glaciation, and erosion through frost action. Such processes produce the peak shape. Some of these mountains have glacial lakes, created by melting glaciers. Mountains can be eroded and weathered, altering their characteristics over time, so even if you've been to an area once, it may not be the same as before."

"Tall mountains have different climatic conditions at the top than at the base, and will thus have different life zones -- with different survival hazards -- at different altitudes. The flora and fauna found in these zones tend to become isolated since the conditions above and below a particular zone will be inhospitable to those organisms. These isolated ecological systems are known as sky islands and/or microclimates."

Yang grinned at them brightly.  "I REALLY want to take us to a sky island or glacial lake at some point, so if you have suggestions, I'm all ears."

"Mountains are also generally less preferable for human habitation than lowlands; the weather is often harsher, and there is little level ground suitable for agriculture. At very high altitudes, there is less oxygen in the air and less protection against solar radiation, and acute mountain sickness, caused by hypoxia - a lack of oxygen in the blood, affects over half of lowlanders who spend more than a few hours above 3,500 meters, or 11,483 feet."

"So today, we're starting small with rock climbing at a gym!  We should be having a portal show up right about...."  almost on queue, the portal she ordered popped up at the other end of the classroom.  "Now!  Gotta say, when the gnomes are on time, they are ON TIME!"

"Now, this is the one I go to regularly, so behave.  I've already covered your passes and gear for today, so let's go have some fun!"

Super-small class this term, but Yang wasn't going to let that deter her.

"What up?" she said, cracking her knuckles and grinning cheerfully once her team was assembled.

"So, some of the other teachers normally handle this class, but I was like, nah, I think it should be open to everyone and not just the kids at the school. So! I stole their syllabus and decided to make it mine!"

"Welcome to Terrain! Because sometimes, this island goes nuts and you might get stuck somewhere that is TOTALLY not the type of climate you're used to! A portal could dump you in an underwater city, or the tundra, or, like, a monster-infested forest."

"My plan is to give you a basic grounding in the varying types of terrain you might encounter as either an adventurer, or a resident of Fandom Island. 'Cause let's be honest, the fact you live here is testimony to the fact that you never know where you may find yourself."

"So from cityscapes to icebergs, each week we will look at a different type of terrain, and one thing you can do to make your life easier. And no, I'm not gonna let you know too far in advance what we're doing each week, because I don't want you to have time to prepare for each scenario. Too many times you'll have to work with only the things you have on you during an emergency, and learning to keep your wits about you is important."

"Today? Let's walk and talk. Hope you brought a coat, we're gonna hike around the island, learn about our local geography, and get to know each other! Let's go!"

It was Arms Day for Yang, so after a quick (five mile) run around the island, here she was at Atlas, getting set-up for her workout.

It was easier to do all her weight training here, rather than worry about annoying her neighbors with her loud music while she worked out, and they already had all the equipment she needed.

Tunes on, Gatorade on standby, and Yang Xiao Long lost herself in the familiar routine.

If someone else came in, she'd turn down the music and gladly share the equipment, but for now, she was in her happy zone.

"Last class for the year!" Yang hollered cheerfully. "As the handwavey email said, if you're allergic to animals, I hope you took some OTC drugs, because we're off to an animal shelter!"

Not the one HERE. That was Prompto's territory, and Yang hadn't felt comfortable asking him for that favor. Especially after what she'd heard through the radio about him going on dates.

She'd loved visiting him there when they were both stupid kids students, and getting covered in puppies. She didn't want to tarnish those memories with a new, awkward one.

Instead, Yang grinned brightly at her gathered party, blonde hair whipping in the winter wind. "So let's get through the portal," she cheered. "On the other side is a branch of the Animal Humane Society."

"As one of the nation's leading animal welfare organizations, the Animal Humane Society is changing the way shelters care for animals, and directly engaging their communities. From innovative medical and behavior programs. to investments in outreach and advocacy, they're advancing animal welfare and creating a more humane world for animals everywhere."

"From offering low-cost vet services like microchipping and neutering, doing trap-neuter-release with feral populations that won't adjust to being pets, to building sliding-scale vet centers in areas that don't have any animal care, they've gone above and beyond 'just' rehoming stray animals. Though they do a lot of that too."

"Today, you've got a bunch of options. Take dogs for walks. Play with cats. Help the groomers bathe these babies to help them find good homes. Interact with the more exotic animals, like birds and lizards and ferrets. Help potential adopters fill out paperwork. Or sort the donations that people drop off."

"But let's go change some lives!"

"If you hate the hats, good news, we're leaving the island again, so you can try and take them off if you want," Yang said as people arrived at the Causeway. "Hope you got my handwavy message to dress warm!"

"A bunch of cities got hit by snow over the last few days. Predictably, the residents were unprepared because of unseasonably warm weather lately. Gotta love global warming. However, the cities were also unprepared, and while they've been out handling the roads, they have not yet cleared the sidewalks by their parks."

"Why does this matter? Because not everyone who's disabled has a bad-ass prosthetic like my arm," she said bluntly. "They may use mobility aids, or just get along the best they can, and a snow and ice covered sidewalk? Does not allow them to get to the store or to public transit."

"Keeping sidewalks clear is important for people with mobility aids, people with strollers, and just general safety! Not everyone has a car, or speeder bike, or whatever to get around, and sometimes you just gotta walk somewhere."

"This city has a group called the Snow Angels. They're broken up into groups by neighborhood, and handle clearing the sidewalks and public transit stations when the city fails to help out in a timely manner, ESPECIALLY around retirement homes and high-density housing filled with immigrants who reply heavily on public transportation. They also take applications for helping out private citizens who cannot clear their own walkways or driveways for a variety of reasons, and don't have the money to pay someone else to do it for them."

"So today you've got a few options: help with snow removal by going out with one of the teams, stay at the community center and pass out hot cider and coco to teams that are coming in to warm up, or work dispatch with the radios to coordinate teams. Now let's go!"

"Today we're helping the environment, and heading over to Swallow Falls State Park," Yang enthused, once people arrived. "We're going to help them prep for winter by doing some trash pick-up and trail maintenance!"

"The United States has both a National Parks system, and a State Parks system. Basically, at one point, people decided 'hey, nature is important,' and took some serious steps to make sure it was preserved for everyone, and that not everything got paved over into cities."

"Today, we're at a park run by the state. With winter coming, it's especially important to get trash picked-up and thrown away, the seasonal bike rentals cleaned, maintained, and put away, and the landscaping get all raked and trimmed and prepped for the season."

"I have both disposable and gardening gloves available for everyone, as well as trash bags. The park rangers have gardening tools, tools for bike-fixing, and big bags of mulch to start doing trail repair if you really want a work-out. So let's go!"

"Okay, team, we're off for more sorting!" Yang said cheerfully as they headed through the portal.

"As you may know, there is a gift-giving holiday coming up in this country. A few of them, actually! And as you may have noticed, this world -- like many others -- has a wealth-disparity issue and not everyone can afford gifts for their families."

"This year is even more of a challenge, because families all around the globe continue to need support because of the economic and personal challenges the pandemic has created. So today, we're volunteering with a gift drive that is taking that into account."

"While 'Toys for Tots' is fairly well known, people tend to focus on the 'tot' part of that name and only provide toys for babies. But that program has drawbacks, like the short application period, or the limited toys. In reality, people of all ages need toys to promote their creativity, and they deserve to pick what they want, not structured along gender or age lines."

"This particular gift drive has two goals: items donated will go to two very worthy local organizations: Hallie Q. Brown Community Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the Women’s Prison Book Project in Minneapolis, Minnesota."

"This drive is doing all they can to make donating safe and easy for everyone despite the ongoing pandemic. In addition to physical donation boxes in multiple stores in the area, people also have five options for donating remotely."

"So today, you have options. You can join the van crew and ride around emptying donation sites, you can process the items that are arriving at the central distribution hub, you can unpack the remotely-donated items, or you can help at any of the other things going on at the community center today. They also have a food shelf that's open today, or childcare down the hall."

"Wheels up, people!" Yang hollered cheerfully as she ushered them through the portal this week. "This time, literally!"

"Meals on Wheels is a program that brings pre-made meals to senior citizens who are for one reason or another in need of help with meals. They provide nutritious meals, a quick safety check and much-needed human connection to homebound seniors. In some communities, additional services that keep seniors healthy and safe are also offered, like pet food delivery, senior center meal programs, home repair services and transportation. Each local program works with its own community’s needs and resources to provide a community-specific solution."

"Yes, this is a volunteer gig, not a standard social service provided by the government." Yang shook her head in dismay. "Sometimes, Earth really sucks, which we're isolated from in Fandom. We might have large apocalypses, but for people outside Fandom, sometimes every day is a crisis."

"The reality is that over nine million seniors in America struggle with hunger, fifteen million live in isolation, and eighteen million live in or near poverty. So today, we're going to try and do our best to help out a little bit."

Yang was... not having a great day.

First, her latest attempt at tracking down the area that Raven was in hadn't pulled up any leads. Qrow had given her the most likely locations of the current camp, but she still had to do the legwork to find where they were now.

Second, she'd turned on the radio to find out that apparently Prompto had gone on a date.

It was fine. Totally be fine. It wasn't like they were still dating, and she totally didn't still have feelings for him. Timelines had fucked them over and they'd grown apart and they weren't dating. They weren't the same people they had been as students. So it didn't sting at all.

At least, that's what she was telling herself while she was putting herself through her paces in the weight room, doing her best to stop thinking and just be in the moment with her workout.

Weights, sauna, boxing, sauna, tai chi, sauna, weights... rinse and repeat, until she was too tired for her brain to keep going.

It was fine. And she had a new weight record to beat without using her powers.

"Right, same Earth as last time, let's go," Yang said, hustling everyone through the portal.

"So, if you've been on Earth in this hemisphere before, you know it's about to get very, very cold and wet. If you didn't know... now you do."

"Today, we're helping out at a 'winter gear drive,'" You could basically hear the airquotes. "People from all over have donated new or used-but-still-good condition coats, gloves, hats, boots, snowpants...everything people are going to need for winter."

"And if YOU are not equipped for a Fandom winter, let me know. We'll get you set-up too."

"We're going back to the same near-Earth dimension as last time," Yang said, as she started waving people through the portal. "But this time, to something a little less physically intensive."

On the other side, they'd find themselves in front of a library. "Today, we're going to be reading tutors."

"Statisics show that communities are happier, healhier, and have higher upward mobility in the future with high literacy rates. But not everyone is able to get the help they need at home or at school."

"Many times, kids don't like doing their reading with their families, often because of the stress of expectations from their adults, or perhaps the adult in the room doesn't have the literacy required themselves. So today, we're going to do our best to help out by providing some non-judgemental, one-on-one time with students. Reading Partners, the people who invited us here today, already have outlines for us for what we should accomplish in our time with the kids. We just have to follow their timeline."

"For those of you who prefer not to interact deeply with children, they can use help organizing supplies, making photocopies, and running the sign-in and registration table, where you'll be working mostly with their adults."

Class was told to gear up in clothes they could move in, sunscreen, a water bottle, and solid shoes, and to meet at the Causeway portal.

"We're headed to a near-Earth dimension, where those who are not human-standard won't get a second look," Yang promised. "And we're gonna build some houses. I'm providing all of you with work gloves, and dinner."

"Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. The goal is getting families into new, safe, quality homes of their own, with affordable mortgages."

"Why is that important? Well, lots of houses are getting snapped up by corporations to be rentals, and for families, it's often more expensive to rent than own, especially the bigger the family. Not to mention the instability of your rent always going up. It's also hard to find housing if you have an eviction on your record, or even just if your credit isn't spotless. So today, we're gonna use our brains and our brawn to work on four houses. Habitat managed to buy the entire block, so we've got plenty of chances to work!"

"Welcome back," Yang said cheerfully, once everyone arrived to the Community Center room that was now filled with... boxes.  So many boxes.

"If you pay attention to the mainland news, you may have heard that a hurricane really wacked the heck out of the Southern and Eastern United States recently," she continued.  "So, I reached out to the Red Cross, and we're now a temporary volunteer site, so we can help out."

"In our case, by packing emergency supply boxes!  Which, is a skill.  What DO you need in an emergency?  How do you know?  In a moment of panic, deciding what is a necessity and what isn't can be difficult.  So, we're gonna talk about what makes a good emergency supply kit, and what maybe you should have in your grab-and-go bag under your bed."

Everyone had one of those, right?  Right?

"So, first off, I printed out the official list from Ready.gov for all of you," Yang said, handing out the paper lists.  "But for a personal emergency kit?  You REALLY need extras of your medications, but be sure not to let them lapse.  Know where your official paperwork is, like your birth certificate, passport, etc.  Keep charged batteries, both the disposable kind and the reuseable ones.  There's small ones you can get to keep your phone charged, some of them are even solar-powered!  There's also bigger reuseable ones that can even jump a car."

"If you can get a portable generator, great, but those can be expensive and hard to get/upkeep.  Do you have a pet?  Make sure you have their vet paperwork and their food and meds! If you have any food in your kit, rotate it out before it goes bad."

"And, because we're Fandom Island, I'm sure most of us have weapons in our go-bags, so be sure you have your weapon maintenance equipment. I have to have spare parts for my arm!"

"But... that's probably not a problem for, like, regular people that have been displaced from their homes, or are still there but in bad situations."

"So grab a box, and the list that goes with it! All the storage boxes are labeled, let's work together to get these packages ready to send out! And if you need someone to lift something heavy, yell for me or Sidon."

When everyone arrived, they'd find that Yang had booked for class a space with a lot of bean bag chairs that she'd kinda shoved into a circle. Each chair had a moddable notebook and pen on it, and by the door was a big box labeled 'SUGGESTIONS.' Yang herself had already grabbed a seat -- and a notebook with a dog on it -- and wasn't wearing her mechanical arm. Instead her t-shirt sleeve ended just above the metal cap that sealed off her scar tissue.

"Hey," she said, once it seemed like everyone that was going to show up was there. "Grab a seat. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Yang Xiao-Long. You can just call me Yang. "

"So. You all saw the course description when you signed-up. Or read it on your schedule when the Moose decided to mess with you. But to recap -- sometimes, we all get wrapped up in the chaos that is Fandom Island, and think the only way to help is to fight. Together, the might of Fandom makes right. And that's wrong. I'm aware that might sound like bullshit, coming from someone with super-powers, but it's true."

"Some ways to help without fighting seem small, some are bigger. Some are temporary but no less-needed, some make a lasting impact, and others are volunteer-tourism that hurt more than it helps."

"So, I'd like to hear from you -- why did you sign up for this class? What do you think your greatest talent is that you bring to a group? What's one thing you'd like to accomplish this semester?"

After getting a load of what Summer had put together for her jello shot theme that evening, all Tino could do was complain about how it wasn't fair that apparently Summer wasn't being banned from the Olympics, but he was.

"Yeah," said Summer, "I'm pretty sure there's a big difference between thematic jello and shotputting from the karaoke stage, Tino."

Maybe she could just convince him to pole-vault himself right into the trash or something, though.

This week? Was driving Prompto crazy. Truth be told, this whole summer was making him crazy, and every day was like a new roller coaster of anxiety and pent up energy and horrible crippling fear, and it was reaching a point where he wasn't sure if he could take it anymore. But there wasn't much he could do about it outside of just hitching a portal back to Insomnia, but, what? What he going to do that every single time?

Well, he could, but he'd feel pretty shitty about.

But what else could he do? Something fun, something silly, something that could be done in the daytime hours before the sirens but that wasn't necessarily outside that would remind them of everything, but wasn't in the dorms, either, because he was feeling a little closed in and trapped and claustrophobic about the place this week...

Then he had an idea, and it was pretty dumb and dorky and kind of lame, but (spoiler alert!) HE was pretty dumb and dorky and kind of lame (SHOCKER, right?), so it worked, and he hit up the emails and the texts to his fellow students:

S'up, everyone!

I don't know about you guys, but this week is feeling all KINDS of BLAH for me, so I got to thinking: I'm gonna do something about it! Kind of. I'm talking Fast Eddie's, pizza, bowling, arcade games, BOOM. Something that's decidedly NOT all doom and gloom and creepy monsters. And early, so the people who need to can get back well before the sirens go off again, and everyone else? Bring your weapons, we can have, like, a super raid party on the way back!!!

Anyway, I'm going to be there either way. Hopefully you'll all be there, too! DON'T MAKE ME EAT ALL THIS PIZZA BY MYSELF!!!

--Prompto!!

And, as the message said, he was there, either way, getting in a few warm-up practice shots before too many people showed up (assuming anyone even will, but, whatever, he was going to have fun and a million leftovers if no one did!), wrinkling his nose at the bowling shoes because he sort of like them for how weird the color combos were, but, man, did they make his ankles look small when he was used to wearing boots all the time!

[[ work is pretty chill this morning and I'm bored af (famous last words!), plus a couple of bottles thrown into the recycling bin sounded like bowling pins to me, so here we are! Invitations went out to all students, but it's a public place, so come on in, anybody! No OCD because that would take me a million years; let chaos reign, I guess! woo! ]]

This year, Student Council had gone for the most empowering theme they could come up with. Be strong! Be glamorous! Be a Glamazon!

And they would have gotten away with it too, if not for that pesky pollen making for some last-minute revisions to the decorating. The glitter was a staple, the glitter was fine, and so there was plenty of that to go around. But the Greek statues that had been set up tastefully around the Community Center had all in one fell swoop started to seem decidedly less tasteful, and so in a fit of panic, Student Council had dressed each and every one of them up...

... in lingerie.

At least it was glittery lingerie? Though the end result did seem a little less Ancient Greece and a little more Rocky Horror than had previously been intended.

Glamazons, guys!

Yes, Yang had high-tailed (pun intended) it over to Furnado the moment she heard the radio and realized WHY Prompto hadn't been answering her texts.

Which was why now she was at the park, with Prompto, yes, but also two of the other puppies from the store. She'd been going back-and-forth all day, bringing them out to play in different shifts because there was no way she could manage ALL the puppies at once.

"Ready guys? Goooooooooooo..... GET IT!" She flung the tennis ball with a nice, high arc, and Prompto and his new BFFs took off.

"NO! Don't chase the flamingo-- great. Just great." Well, that was ONE wet puppy so far who'd need a bath when she took them back to the store. At least it wasn't Prompto?

If anyone needed Prompto at the shelter that day, they would find him laid out in the puppy pen. Yes, this was usually where anyone who needed Prompto at the shelter would find him on any given shift, but this was different. This was not the usual puppy pile, not by a long shot.

This was a sad, depressed, pathetic, desperate puppy pile befitting an ultimate idiot loser such as himself.

"You gotta pile harder, pups," he told them. "Just crush me to death with your weight. It's a far better ending that I deserve."

Nope. He still wasn't over the fact that he'd gone and sent Yang flowers and forgot to include a note. He's spent so much time obsessing and flailing and worrying about what to put on that note, too. He'd written about five hundred possible notes. And was so caught up in the distressing possibilities of what to even put in a note like that, that he'd totally blue-screened and didn't include any of them.

And then she'd gotten him a flower, one that did have a note, a note that he then started obsessing over instead to the point where, even if he'd had a text message all ready to go on his phone about a million times, he deleted it over and over and over.

Thinking about it now, under a pile of puppies, he let out a miserable little groan over how hopeless and pathetic he was, but then he looked up at the face of the puppy sitting on his chest and lifted his hand to start scratching behind his ears. "If you get hungry, buddy," he said. "Just eat my face. The world will be better for it. I'm a lost cause, boyo. I'm hopeless. I'm pitiful." But that face! Prompto's voice started to go a little mushy as his scritching turned into cute puppy face squishing. "Who's just a sad sack of crap who fails at life, huh? Ish it me? Ish it me? Yeah, it's meeee. Yesh, yesh, yesh. But who's a good boy? Ish it you? Ish it? It iiisssss. Such a good, good boy, yesh you are! The best of boys."

And, despite all that, he had to chuckle a little, especially as the puppy gave him a little encouraging lick on the face, and he settled into petting him, and sighing a little, but he was grateful. Puppies really did make everything better.

It started out simply enough; Prompto had decided that he and Girl were going to have a photoshoot day at the shelter, so that he could snap a bunch of good pictures to send to Zack to let him know she was doing well and was in totally good hands (because he knew that if he had to leave behind his dog to go traipsing around back home, he'd definitely want as many adorable updates as possible), but he'd only gotten a few shots in before the familiar message of his memory being full popped up and he had to take a moment to go through his jam-packed-full album and get some of them saved to the external album he had because it was impossible to just delete them.

And it was also impossible not to get a little squishy and nostalgic as he went through some of the pictures still on his memory. Some as recent as the one's he'd taken from the zipline in Field Trip class two days ago, pictures of the newbie picnic last week, pictures of Hyrule, pictures of him and Yang kissing in Hyrule...pictures of them all dancing (mysteriously having captured him in the picture despite being the one to have taken it) to defeat those snow-jerks, nearly every animal in the entire shelter, that picture of Nell he'd told Nina he'd get. There were pictures from homecoming, from Greece, from the first welcome picnic, one of those first selfies with Vette where she taught him how good of a word 'Wookiee" was to get people to smile, the shuttle bus, the view of Eos on his way out, and, finally, that last picture he'd taken of him in the guys, in Noct's apartment, him and the prince mugging it for the camera in the foreground, Ignis caught in the act of pushing up his glasses, Gladio rolling his eyes but there was still a faint, amused smile on his face...

And that one pulled at Prompto's chest a little harder than he'd expected, and it hit him like brick that he hadn't seen any of those ugly mugs in person since he came here. Maybe...maybe he should see what it would take to arrange a trip home. Maybe just for the weekend, or something. He didn't even have to be back on Monday, since he didn't have any classes until Tuesday. If he let Noct know, he could probably foot the bill for it, too. He could get in some training, just hang out with them again...

Weird, how you didn't realize how much you could miss people until you actually stopped distracting yourself and were forced to look at it...

...not that he imagined they'd be missing him nearly half as much, but still...

So Prompto, biting his lip nervously, hesitated a moment as he leaned on his elbows on the counter, his foot dancing a little in the air behind him, before he decided to hit Noctis with a text.

Yo bro. wyd?

Anybody walking past Caritas would have spotted a sign out front:

Caritas presents:
THREE-MINUTE DATES

It was written in a calligraphy that was decidedly at odds with the fact that it was done in neon marker on a bar sign.

Inside, tables had been set up throughout the bar, with little candles just a shade nicer than they probably should have been on each one. The zombies were wearing pinstripes (except for the drummer, who was inexplicably wearing a bowtie) and playing their way through a collection of swing music. On the bar were an assortment of snacks, mostly nice cheeses and crudités, with slices of good, crusty baguette.

At eight o'clock sharp, Hannibal took to the stage in front of the band and nodded to the assorted guests. He was dressed in a lovely burgundy and red plaid three-piece suit with a pink shirt and blue paisley tie and pocket square. Somehow, it worked on him.

"Welcome to Caritas this evening, and thank you to the staff for hosting us. I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter, and tonight we are hosting three-minute dates. I hope that many of you will be participating. I am obliged on behalf of myself and this establishment to advise you that we are not liable for any inconvenience or damage you may incur. Hopefully those will both be kept to a minimum, however. Rude behavior is frowned upon." That was a mild but serious look he was giving you all preemptively.

"This is an opportunity for you to meet and make friends, and perhaps spark something more. It will work like this: I will announce pairs of people. You will go to the tables indicated and meet, and you will have three minutes to introduce yourselves and do whatever you like, within the bounds of legality and public decency. Then the band here," he gestured at the zombies, "will begin to play, and you will wrap things up before I announce the next pairings. You will each have five dates. Should you wish to spend more time together, the bar will remain open afterward, and we encourage you to remain and mingle."

He smiled and spread his hands. "Please, enjoy."

[Each date is five comments per person; if you need one or two to wrap things up, that's cool, too, but keep it short in the spirit of things. Regular bar post for post-3MD mingling should be up Saturday, but this is going up early for great timezone justice.]

Town hall was decked out for homecoming, and there was certainly... a theme. Halloween Under the Sea was definitely a theme that they had come up with.

And it was a theme that was put together by several people not from this universe who didn't know much about Halloween, or what this planet had under its sea.

So there were definitely backdrops of waves lining the walls, and they were decorated with things like fish. Fish that were wearing costumes that had been Googled so that some might have firefighter helmets on, or cat ears. One was very definitely a superhero. Same for the octoroks. And sure, yeah, maybe you had one of these guys on a wall but he was wearing a witch's hat!

There was also plenty of orange and black glitter around, too. Don't worry, they hadn't classed the place up too much.

The shadows didn't want to budge. They liked it here, and they liked their toys, and maybe they would like to reach out, sometime, and bring in more...

It would be oh-so-cosy.

myownface: The rainbow Pride flag (Pride)
[personal profile] myownface
Much like last year, yesterday's rainbow was still stretching across the sky, as bright as it ever was. The weather this afternoon was beautiful too, not too hot, not too cold. The island didn't even have to stretch to make that happen today.

In the park, there was a pretty impressive setup for a Pride picnic. The tables had been draped in tablecloths in the colours of various pride flags, and each one had a centerpiece that consisted of a vase with smaller moddable flags in it, free for the taking. Off to the side there was a ball pit, a giant inflatable kraken slide (Jono still wasn't actually sure where the slide had come from, but he was going to just roll with it), and other activities for people to enjoy. There were booths, there was the requisite food, and even the stage had made a reappearance this year, with a setup for karaoke if anybody was feeling daring, but plenty of room if anybody wanted to get up and play, too.

All-in-all? It was a lovely day with a brightly-coloured park open for everyone to come enjoy.

"Fireball special, incoming!"  The cheery voice was probably at odds to the music of bullet casings hitting the pavement, as Yang incinerated another slug using her shotgun gauntlets.  "Aw yeah, that makes fifty-seven.  Who's up next, ugly little dudes?"

Her gauntlets rotated and reloaded, and Yang spun about, looking for her next target.  It wasn't punching Grimm, but it was the closest she'd gotten since getting here, and it was good target practice.  "Batter up!"

Yeah, she'd be at this for awhile.

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and octopuses octopi octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.
