What day of the week was it? Who knew! Who cared! The important thing was it was the 31st, and everything else was officially next year's problem.

The bar was done up in a ridiculous amount of Christmas lights, which when paired with the usual metallic balloons and streamers, made for pretty good mood lighting. And sure, the mechanical bull still looked like sort of a lit up monstrosity but it added a certain something to the place.

Today of course was the day for getting everything finalized for the party, including decorating. It was never anything too crazy (aside from the yearly fight over whether glitter would rain down at midnight), but Kitty had liked the idea of a lot of lights. Which she couldn't find.

At least until she went looking in the back room and found them all on the mechanical bull, lighting it up like some ungodly mechanized beacon, visible from space.

"Tino, I've got a project for you to undo!"

Nothing like trying to blind the patrons.

Kitty was not actually working. Well, she was, if anyone came in, but work was a good way to finish wrapping presents without a seven-year-old making up convenient excuses to come by. She'd commandeered a table I the lounge as a wrapping station and had at least confined her mess to there.

As for the caroling gremlins... well, they were onstage. With the zombies. They were current working through Little Drummer Boy and Kitty was wondering how fast she could possibly be done with this and flee.

Kitty expected things to get quiet over the next week or so, so she made a point of getting everything printed up early so she could post flyers around town before then. She loved this party, people needed to know that they should attend.

Kitty was a little late to work due to taking Lexi to Selkie Peak to see the town lit up at night. (And it being dark meant the kid probably wouldn't notice the puppet people and start asking questions.)

When she got into work, she didn't find Tino at first. Not until he came back in with a load of tangled Christmas lights that he was going to stick on the mechanical bull. Kitty felt like this would end in being able to spot the bull from space, but at least it kept him occupied.

Kitty was trying to arrange some stuff for the New Year's party in her downtime.

Tino was riding a lit up reindeer outside. She told him they could just put lights on the mechanical bull and he wouldn't chance getting thrown down any stairs, and yet.

Also now she had to get lights for the mechanical bull for the holidays.

Okay. Oh boy. Kitty liked the December whimsy. She thought Carol of the Bells was pretty. She also worked in a bar with speakers for the band/karaoke and some in the back room so today was stupid.

She was generally a reasonable person! Definitely the normal one between herself and Tino, though the bar was in hell for that one. And yet:

"If we take them down and put them in the alley then we should be good," she said as she unhooked a speaker. At least she wasn't phasing through it.

Tino seemed pumped for Wednesday, the day that everyone would pile into the bar for the night before Thanksgiving, to escape the family they were visiting.

"That doesn't happen here," Kitty said. "That's never happened the entire time I've worked here, at least not for that purpose."

Great. Now she'd crushed his dreams.

The bar had gone from looking like Halloween threw up to looking like Christmas was about to up at the same time. The tree was up, there was some kind of white snowflake garland all around, it smelled weirdly of peppermint in here.

Kitty was... just gonna let it happen. Pick your battles. She'd still be in a fall mood, with a bowl of extra candy out on the bar because Lexi's haul had been ridiculous. And she was mostly excited about the potato (??) she'd gotten.

Kitty had taken a couple days off after the trip, so she didn't come in until her shift. She was prepared. She knew she'd be walking into the bar looking like Halloween had thrown up all over it.

And it did. Fake rubber spiders hung a little too low from the ceiling. Brooms lined the walls, which made her wonder where he'd gotten them all, and also they were plastic ones you could buy at the store, one had a dustpan on it. Several pumpkins were on the bar, next to the bar, on the tables in the lounge. Black and orange confetti was on everything. There were plastic cauldrons on the bar filled with snacks. (That eas actually cute.)

Tino had been really disappointed that she'd come through the wall. She knew there'd be a terrible "scary" noise that went off when someone opened it, and now she was both wanting someone to come in to know what it was, and hoping she didn't have to listen to it all night.

Tino had apparently listened to radio, because he was on a pumpkin spice kick. If the maple adventures had been interesting, pumpkin spice whiskey lemonade wasn't quiiiite the same thing? Especially when he was that heavy on the syrup. Kitty was all for embracing your inner basic bitch but hoo boy.

He'd tried putting pumpkin spice margaritas as a special but she was erasing that from the board every time he wrote it on there. Yes, there had been multiple attempts.

Once in a while, Kitty and Tino would use a shift to try coming up with new drink recipes. Today they were going with a fall theme and trying maple with different things to see what stuck. Maple and cotton candy vodka? Absolutely not. Maple margaritas were not going to be happening. The maple bourbon lemonade honestly had no right to be as good as it was.

Kitty did come in every day in the daytime. There were things you buy and unload, bills to pay, paychecks to sign. It wasn't like she was absent.

So when she walked in today, and the place looked like fall had exploded. Things were covered in gourds, it smelled like potpourri, there was a Pilgrim banner, which... way too early, but also no.

"When did you even have time to do this?" Kitty asked. "...are these real leaves on the floor?"

Welcome to Caritas! Today was for sweeping the hell out of the bar!

If you heard a vacuum going during any downtime today, it was because Kitty was making Tino clean up all the glitter he'd brought back into the bar on Saturday. There was no way he'd get all of it, that was impossible. But he was damn well going to try now that he was good and ready and forced to.

Were you tired of glitter yet? Because the banner above the stage reading "WELCOME TO THREE MINUTE DATES" was covered in it. Which meant the stage was covered in a fine mist of them. Which meant there was probably some of the tables. And the bar. Not the drinks, though, they kept up with standards.

And a few minutes before 8:00, Kitty took to the stage.

"Welcome again to Three Minute Dates!" she greeted them. "If you haven't done this before, the tiles are simple. Every three minutes, we'll read off pairs of names. You sit down with them, get to know them for three minutes, and when the gong bongs, you'll move on to your next march. After five dates, if you want to talk to anyone more, hang around and chat for a while. Ready? You've got a couple minutes to sign up, then we're gonna get going."

Kitty was getting the place ready for Three Minute Dates Saturday, including stretching butcher block paper over the bar to make the sign. Would they need glitter? Of course not, it was still all the hell over from the weekend and would be there always.

Tino was doing his part by trying to come up with themed drinks, and Kitty had had to spend a lot of time already nixing the idea of jungle juice so good luck to you all.

The employees at the Perk reeeeally wanted to make sure you know it was pumpkin spice latte season. There were several ads. There was a life si3 (for a human) cardboard cutout of a PSL. Someone had stuck a scarecrow in the corner with a cup in its hand, which, calm down, it was t even Labor Day yet.

And boy, did they not expect anybody to order a regular iced mocha.

Kitty got her drink, took her seat, and tried to ignore the judgmental and confused glances from the workers. She even got up to move to the other side of her table so they could at least be confused at her back.

Tino had all sorts of ideas for movies for the upcoming weeks. Kitty had them planned, and she said so, but he was undeterred.

Which led to her saying a lot of things like, "I'm not sure anything rather NC-17 is family friendly?" or "No, we're not pulling a Death in a Fence series all night marathon."

It might be a long night.

Kitty was here with a raging headache and the aspirin hasn't kicked in yet. And unfortunately any hope of an easy night was thwarted by Tino working as loudly as possible while apparently trying to work quietly, and the zombies seemed to be experimenting in a hair metal phase.

Maybe she'd go home early. Before the zombies started head banging because she couldn't deal with anything that came from that.

Kitty liked doing the movie thing on Monday, and was putting up posters advertising the next one, but it opened her up for helpful suggestions from Tino about which ones to do next.

These suggestions elicited answers like, "That's disgusting," "Kids go to this," "No, we're not doing anything gory," and finally, "What the hell is wrong with you?"

The projector was set up in the park again, with all the room to set down chairs and blankets so people could hang out and watch.

Tino was also handing out toy totally-not-lightsabers which was not in the plan and he wasn't supposed to be involved in any of this so surely this would go well.

Kitty hasn't even seen Tino at the movie last night and yet here he was, steadfastly refusing to serve anything but Coronas. Kitty herself would serve whatever, because she was a normal person. But... it was a battle.

The park was set up with a large screen for the movie to project onto, the sound system was up and working, and there was plenty of room for people to spread out with blankets, chairs, picnic supplies, or whatever else they might have brought. Alcohol was fine as long as you kept in mind that this was a family-friendly event, in that younger kids would only probably really be interested in the cars and older kids might enjoy the actual movie.

So come one and come all, and watch yourselves some 2 Fast 2 Family.

The way Kitty saw it, it was worth coming up with a reason for people to gather at night without it being kraken-related, and lo, an idea was had. And now she got to go around town putting up posters.

There was sand all over the floor. All over. Kitty didn't know if it was a Fandom thing or if it was a Tino thing and you know what, Kitty didn't care as long as it was gone by tomorrow.

At least until she went into the back room and found a giant beach umbrella propped up in the sand. That just felt excessive.

Kitty had found that the washer wasn't working this morning when she went to do laundry. She didn't think much of it yet; maybe it was just old. It was annoying but these things happened.

It was more annoying when she realized she didn't out the lid on the blender all the way and it popped off, covering herself and Tino in attempted margarita. She had spare clothes in the office just in case, so that would be an easy enough fix once she finished cleaning up, but Tino, despite living upstairs, was just working with his shirt off now.

So enjoy that, patrons.

The ballroom was all done up in appropriately red, white, and blue bunting. Because bunting felt very Steve if you asked Tony. And Tony was the one picking the decorations for this one. Sorry, Steve.

There were a few fireworks themed chandeliers set up in the center of the room to drive home the celebration as well. And a wide selection of foods that Steve liked most. So all the foods. It was all the foods, but straight-forward stuff (burger bar, taco bar, hot dog bar, ice cream sundae bar with a chocolate fountain (because who didn't want a chocolate fountain on their birthday?)), and not appetizer portions. And pie! Either because Steve liked pie or because Tony thought it was hilarious.

Or both.

And after all of that, there would be a birthday cake with a truly obnoxious number of candles and a 'fireworks' show that was visible from the ballroom windows if you didn't want to brave a trip to the roof. It was actually a drone show because Tony was Tony. And the noise would be something else if they did actual fireworks.

Tino was hyper focused on the blender today. Normally not a huge problem, but he was taking it as a challenge. Everything was getting blended. Did you want a run and Coke? Blended. Martini? Blended. Beer? You best believe you were getting it blended.

Usually it was Tino who was annoying. Tonight, it was the zombies. Despite the AC cranking to a comfortable temperature, they were playing hear-related songs. Summer in the City, Fever, Heatwave... and then Nelly e wet second song despite Kitty begging them to give it a break.

So that was fun.

The zombie drummer's arm kept falling off. This was the fourth time, and Kitty was getting real tired if going up there to fix it. She was going through so much duct tape.

She was beginning to think he was doing it on purpose.

Kitty was a little late to work. You didn't have to work every day for a holiday to completely screw with your schedule, apparently.

And once she'd phased through the bar to take her rightful spot, she had to deal with judgey looks from Tino.

Once in a while, Kitty and Tino had experiment nights, where they tried to come up with different drinks. Today they were mixing things together, trying to figure out what exactly to do with pickle vodka.

It wasn't going well.

Kitty was just trying to work. She just wanted a peaceful night. And yet here she was, with Tino shoving his phone at her to get her judgment on how to swipe on his Tinder matches. When, it should be noted, she didn't want to have to think about this and also he was way out of his league.

"None of these people live on island, right?" she checked. Because she'd feel like she'd either have to protect them or judge them, depending.

Kitty was having one of those days where nothing was going right, where she'd spilled badly-needed coffee and the kid had an attitude and it was a special kind of annoying to snag your clothes on the doorknob while phasing through the physical door. That kind of day.

And then she walked into the bar seconds after Tino dropped a tray of glasses. Cool. Cool cool cool. Doing great today.

Tino was on the mechanical bull during any due time today. He was determined to stay on for the whole eight seconds and apparently it was going to happen tonight.

So far it was funny when he went flying off. It might be less funny tomorrow.

There were mixers. Or at least two mixers. And they were 7-Up and Coke. Sometimes Fandom did funny things, and sometimes those funny things were taking away mixers... while only leaving them with three flavored vodkas: cake, jalapeño, and bubblegum.

Tino was very obviously hungover. He was sort of hunched over the bar with his head down, and he'd been like that for long enough that Kitty checked once or twice to see if he was awake/alive. She'd told him to go home but apparently it was too much effort to go upstairs when he could perish in silence here.

She was nice enough to not make comments about him not being a spring chicken, too. She had to get some sort of credit for that.

Kitty had no idea how many people were actually interested in this, but you know what, sometimes you had to do something different. And by "different" that meant "it had been probably like five years."

For as much as she was missing the weather in Barbados, Kitty was glad to be back, glad to be reunited with Lexi, and she could finally start on an event she'd been promising for a few weeks/probably a few years now. The menus were out on the bar and everything.

She did check that he was in fact not going, which sort of made this feel like it would be mean to anyone who wasn't, but what did she know. Still, let her bet the decorations down first.

Also someone was completely blowing up his phone after last week so basically there were a lot of Tino-related things she was questioning today.

A couple minutes before 8:00, Kitty interrupted the zombie-played version of "Pony" to take the stage. You're welcome.

"Hello and welcome to Three Minute Dates! Thank you all for coming, whether you're here by accident, here on very purpose, or dragged here by Tino. I know there are other things you could all be doing." Ahem. "Here are the rules: every three minutes you will get paired up on a date with someone. When the gong sounds, it's on to the next date. It's fifteen minutes of your life, and then afterwards if you want to hang out, make friends, have one of Tino's horrifyingly on theme drinks, feel free. I just ask that you please don't have sex in the bathrooms."

She could not stop you from having sex in the bathrooms.

"Have fun! But not too much. Till later. At home."

Ah, the one week Kitty very much did not want to be at work. And especially did not want to be at work around Tino.

He was being pretty normal today (for him), aside from clearly getting a hold of the specials board to be a 12-year-old, apparently intent on making more for Saturday's dates. Kitty wasn't getting into it but she did add a note because she wasn't dealing with it.

She'd also had to threaten to phase through Tino's phone if he kept looking up Cupid costumes. She was saving you all.

She'd figured she'd get her cookies done for class while a certain little girl was out of the house and long story short, that little girl had decided they were going to be an early dinner. There's been some re-baking of cookies, a bribe of leftover cookie dough if Kitty could just get this done, and fifteen minutes there when she wasn't at work yet.

Whatever, it was her bar.

Caritas was open and your bartender smelled faintly of cookies.
