Clearly it was unavoidably fall now, because while the weather wasn't exactly chilly, Parents Weekend had rolled around once more - and with it, picnic tables and name tags and great potential for surprise/confusion/joyful reunions among residents and guests alike.

There was also a banner in Fandom's colors floating above the tables, of course:

WELCOME TO PARENTS WEEKEND 2025!

Come meet your people! Or just to grab some free snacks.

Nell was here and quite cheerful as she worked with all the plants today. The weekend had been, well, rather different, but ultimately fun.

Today she was focused on finishing up paperwork and then tackling all the things that needed to be done as the growing season was coming to an end. There were a lot of things to do. But at least yesterday she had done her big honey harvest for the fall. Her bees sure had been busy!

Which meant there was lots of fresh honey today!

Since Gladio had fit in a ton of extra training that weekend, because, let's be real, when some giant eagle that was basically the guiding spirit of your entire lineage showed up for a weekend no matter how handwavily, you took advantage of it, he was going to take it pretty easy at the gym that Tuesday. As a treat. And as a way to also take care of some of the stuff involved in running the place, because that was pretty important, too.

That was the plan, anyway.

But, instead, apparently, somehow, (he didn't want to point fingers, but some of the gremlins were acting a little suss after their aerobics class today), beef jerky sticks (sorry, sorry, some of them were turkey and chicken jerky, too!) had been littered and tucked into various places around the gym, and now Gladio was sort of stuck in the task of trying to locate them all, shaking his head every time he found one and added it to the pile on his desk.

And maybe it was just an old habit that made him think this, but if he didn't get some kind of cool item at the end of this particular quest, he was honestly going to be a little annoyed about it.

Maybe it would be some kind of beef jerky Cup NoodleTM! That would definitely make it worth it!

When Nell arrived to open the shop today she found stacks of what appeared to be mail order catalogs being dropped off. She tried to explain that she hadn't ordered them and didn't need them, but the mail person insisted that they had to drop them off because of what day it was.

"Monday?" Nell asked, with a note in her voice that suggested it was hopeless to even ask, and indeed she just got an eye roll before they headed off for their next stop.

Nell sighed and brought the stack inside before setting to work. Periodically throughout the day, if she had a break, she'd pick one up at random and leaf through it. Some of them were ridiculously expensive or had ridiculous offerings. Sometimes both.

Come distract her!

Nell had spent a good chunk of yesterday (and would be spending another good amount of time today) getting flowers ready for Steven and the Detective's birthday and wedding celebration. Lots of sunflowers and red roses with the occasional sprig of honeysuckle for devoted and everlasting love thrown in.

They were going to be relatively simple, but beautiful.

The park was set up with a large screen for the movie to project onto, the sound system was up and working, and there was plenty of room for people to spread out with blankets, chairs, picnic supplies, or whatever else they might have brought. Alcohol was fine as long as you kept in mind that this was a family-friendly event, in that younger kids would only probably really be interested in the cars and older kids might enjoy the actual movie.

So come one and come all, and watch yourselves some 2 Fast 2 Family.

Steven very much welcomed the cool temperature of the Museum once he got inside of it. He had various things to catch up on today but first he was going to sit at the welcome desk and appreciate the wonder that was air conditioning.

At some point he might notice how limp his hair now looked thanks to the heat and humidity. But for now he was simply happy to be inside and with a cool cup of water.

Nell spent a lot of time on the phone today, dealing with deliveries that had somehow gone awry. Whose idea had it been to hire squirrels to deliver flower arrangements? Certainly not hers.

And now she not only had to apologize to disgruntled customers, but also find a way to politely suggest to the squirrels that their talents might best be served doing other things. Someone come save her!

Turns out today was the kind of day where Gladio would be running circles, but not on the track at the gym or a treadmill. He was almost inclined to think today was one of those days were the phones were messing up, with how much difficulty he was having trying to get a hold of someone to come check out the washers they used for the towels around the gym, because they just weren't working.

So probably a good thing that the pool didn't get much use, but of course there was a scheduled gremlin synchronized swimming group in later today....

He was going to give it a few more tries, and if he still failed to get a hold anyone, he supposed he'd just have to call in Prompto.

Not exactly cars or guns or computers, but it would be worth a try.

Nell was still awfully happy about their adventure trip yesterday. Whale watching and a hike, and hot springs, oh my!

And luckily, today she just got to do normal stuff with her plants in the store and helping customers that might wander in.

Nell had a busy morning tracking down some exotic flowers from a man who wanted to impress his girlfriend. She'd tried to suggest that buying a set of super expensive and fragile orchid plants, might not be the best choice, but he was having nothing to do with her suggestions, so...

She was on the phone explaining the situation to one of their suppliers. It was taking a while because he was laughing so hard.

She'd be glad of a break later on.

"No thank you," Nell said politely for the trillionth time that day. "Yes, I'm sure this is a lovely rescue dog, as were all the others, but I'm not looking to adopt any dog at all. My cats would be very unhappy. And in any case if I were to want one I'd go to Furnado."

Where the raccoons got all the dogs she had no idea, but she hoped they'd all end up in a good place.

Nell was a bit perplexed to have the store visited by a group of raccoons were sunglasses. 'Raybans' apparently according to them. They kept telling her that today was the day to go out and 'catch the rays' and weren't satisfied until she assured them she'd be getting plenty of outside time.

Covent Garden Flowers was open.

Nell was busily working both out front and out back today. Occasionally someone stopping by might see a sign saying that she was up at the greenhouse and would be back shortly.

Lots and lots to do!

Especially if she wanted to be able to take her usual tea and a book break in the late afternoon.

Nell was busily transplanting seedlings to bigger pots today. She'd have to make a trip back to Soulwood soon to plant some of them there and bring some of the Soulwood plants here. She'd thought she might go last weekend, but with Gladio... dormant... she'd decided to stay home and keep an eye out.

TPFKAG was on the table near her with his robe draped over a chair to the side. Just in case.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
[personal profile] mylandmyrules
Nell and the Plant Formerly Known as Gladio were once again at the flower shop today. Nell still had his robe nearby - just in case. The shop was fairly quiet today, so anyone stopping in might see Nell sitting in a chair reading to a vase of Gladiolas.

What? He might be able to hear her even as a plant. You never knew in Fandom.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
[personal profile] mylandmyrules
Today there was a large vase of gladiolas on the front counter with a "Not for sale - Do not touch" note on it. There was also a rather large robe draped over the back of a nearby chair - just in case there was a sudden floral reversion. Nell was not one to take chances like that.

Nell went about her day, mostly as usual, though she kept up a running commentary, talking to Gladio as if he could hear her - and who knew, maybe he could - and giving him the opportunity to answer (at least in her head). It was a pleasant day, all things considered, excepting the fact that her most significant other was currently a plant.

Nell (who was absolutely here every week whether or not it seemed that way) had been woken up ridiculously early - and she was already an incredibly early riser. It seemed that Ignis was off with Liliana and needed Gladio to help Prompto cover his class - none of which made Gladio very happy (except for the opportunity to make the class all about Cup Noodle).

All of which meant that Nell was out and about even earlier this morning - she certainly wasn't letting Gladio get up by himself. Which also meant that she'd gotten the majority of the basic work done at the shop when Prompto called to let her know that Gladio had turned into a plant again.

Which explained the pot of Gladiolas currently sitting on the counter of the store with a "Not For Sale -Do Not Touch" sign on it.

Sigh...

A raccoon came by early in the morning asking if they could play a prank on Nell, given that it was April Fool's Day. First mistake, don't ask.

Nell declined, so they offered that it was also National Sourdough Bread Day, so she agreed to make an extra loaf of bread for him to pick up tomorrow. That settled, she went back to work.

Nell was planting up a storm today. She'd spent a good chunk of the weekend getting the beehives cleaned up and ready for spring and had been pleased to see that her hives had wintered over well. Soon there would be more than enough flowers blooming to keep them all happy.

In the meantime, spring meant planting and while it wasn't quite spring yet, it was the perfect time to start her seedlings. The afternoon would find Nell with smudged clothes and face and very content as she took her afternoon tea and reading break.

Nell was busily persuing catalogs of new plants that she could order. She was wondering if she could grow some of those Bird of Paradise plants and she definitely wanted some of those Mother of Millions plants. Maybe she'd get some Blue Passion Flowers too.

So many options!

Nell was still taking it easy today. Luckily, February was a quiet month so she had lots of time to sit and sip tea and read a book in between dealing with customers and taking care of the plants.

And, since one of the raccoons had dropped off a note saying that today was National Homemade Soup Day, she had a pot of her best chicken soup on the stove.

Gladio was switching up the motivational stickers this week, especially since they were in February now, so all the January Resolutionists who weren't really going to stick with it had already filtered out. He still had silver and gold stars, but he'd added a few workout specific ones to the offerings this week, too.

The Cup NoodleTM stickers he'd also ordered, however, were all for him. And,well, maybe if you really impressed him.

The January New Years crowd was already starting to thin out significantly, just as Gladio had predicted, which meant that this week was going to be dedicated to encouraging the few people who had still managed to stick with it. If they made it to February, then there was a good chance they'd made it a habit for the restoration the year...or at least a few more months.

And so the stickers had made an appearance again, and he went around distributing them to new patrons and old regulars and even gremlins alike, with a grin and a nod and a word or two of encouragement.

And then he'd spend the rest of the week wondering if he should rethink it when he would later find silver stars over half the equipment and the lockers in the locker rooms.

Nell was very pleased that her own plants were not snickering at her behind her back. That had made for an uncomfortable day yesterday. She thought she'd need to give the flowers a talking to next week, which was certainly not anything she'd had to do back home!

Everything ran smoothly today though, giving her lots of time to think about what a lovely night they'd had last night.

Nell had not been affected by the whatever it was that had disappeared yesterday and then returned, so she was confused by customers coming in and asking her if she was relieved that 'it' was back.

But, being a good shop person, she just agreed and went on with the day, feeling a little bewildered.

The flowers were laughing at her behind her back. Apparently they had their own little 'Flower Tok' thing going on.

And today there was delivery after delivery of rubber ducks. Nell finally had to start refusing delivery since she had no idea what in the workd she'd even do with the ones she already had.

It was the quiet time of the year, so Nell had planned to work on plans for the coming spring. Instead she was continually interrupted by raccoons and a couple of the bigger squirrels stopping by to bring her some strange things they called bobbleheads.

Nell tried to protest, but Leroy (who seemed to be the ringleader here) insisted that a National Day was a National Day and they didn't want her to feel left out.

She thought about telling them that she'd be happy to be left out, but didn't quite have the heart to do so. (Plus some of those raccoons were big!) In any case, by the end of the day she had quite the selection of bobbleheads and a discrete sign by the counter offering a bobblehead or two with every purchase.

Except that there was one thing that she wasn't giving up. She had no idea where Leroy might have found it - he had some strange explanation, but in any case, it was hers.

Nell had certainly been here every week whether it had seemed like it or not. She was glad the Christmas and New Year's rush was over so she had time to finish up some paperwork. The next big push wouldn't come till February, but there would definitely be those who stopped by for flowers to brighten the gloomy days.

It was New Year's Eve, and Caritas was decked out for the holidays. The bar itself was decorated with silver fringe, there were gold, black and white balloons arranged in corners (so anyone trying to hide either couldn't, or they could really hide), silver and gold garland hung from the ceiling, and Tino had even dressed up. Meaning he was wearing a short sleeved t-shirt that looked like a tuxedo. It was the thought that counted.

The zombie band was playing the hits, the bass player dressed in a dashing red velvet jacket for some reason, and Kitty had had fun with the specials for the night.

SPECIALS
Dumpster Fire
Yule Mule
Baltimore Egg Nog
Whiskey Shamash
25th Hour
Fergeue Fruerzangble FuerahsksdahdsadhasjdhWTF Flaming Sugarloaf Wine Thing

Kitty stared at Tino when she saw that last one added. "There's a USB-powered menorah because fire and drunk people is a bad combination and you decided to do this?"

Anyway. There was also a very easily accessible fire extinguisher on top of the bar if needed. Don't let it be needed.

When Steven bumped into dreidels on the way to work he was able to guess what the day's event had turned out to be. He quickly texted Llewellyn to warn him, then just as quickly ran to work on the odd chance the dreidels might follow him instead of hanging about outside their home.

Once Steven was behind the Welcome Desk he did indulge in a few games so the dreidels would know it was nothing personal. Steven got a few pieces of chocolate gelt for his attempts, so at least he had something to nibble on while he was working. Worse things could happen to him by far, really.

Otherwise he was working and preparing things for next week's holiday break. Certainly there for any visitors who needed him.

Nell was rather giggly today. Even though she definitely didn't need to, she'd taken a rickshaw ride from the house to the gym and back again before work. She just couldn't resist! They looked so pretty with all the lights. She might have to make an excuse to go out again. Tonight. After dark.

Wouldn't they be pretty then?

In the meantime, Plant Parenthood was open!

Gladio was squinting a little at the weight area, where a bunch of gremlins in sweatbands and legwarmers were lifting weights with....yup. Yup. He was pretty sure those were fruitcakes. And once he did notice that fact, he had to go over and see for himself just how effective those fruitcakes might have been.

Granted, he was a lot stronger than your average scrawny gremlin, but even he had to admit, for a cake? Those festive bricks were dense. Probably not anything he'd consider working into the regular equipment, but honestly, for the season? He'd allow it.

He'd just make sure to send someone to clean up the area after they were done; you'd probably need a chisel to break off any crumbs from those things, but still, he didn't want to be wrong and end up with ants all over the place next week or something.

Nell had had a remarkably wonderful weekend and was still riding on that good feeling. She'd taken the day off yesterday to, well, to really do not much of anything. Liliana would be thrilled.

Today she was back with the plants and the online orders and the hundred and one normal things that went along with being a business owner. Still, she didn't mind. She was happy to have the freedom to do all of this. From safety. And with great friends and a wonderful man in her life.

Life was good.

After a lovely evening last night, it was hard to make herself roll out of bed and start the day. Still she managed her run and work out before opening her store and getting on with her work. The plants were happy, Nell was happy, and she was looking forward to an upcoming weekend getaway of some sorts with Gladio.

Which might be why she was terribly surprised when a group of raccoons burst in, playing an odd song and tossing her a strange tiny little bikini with polka dots on it. They were holding up a little sign that said "Happy Birthday, Brian Hyland!"

Whoever that was.

Some green furry ...being in a trash can had stormed into the shop and yelled at her about something before storming back out again. Something about it being his day and she should stop being so cheerful.

Nell pondered on that as she got back to work in the store.

Nell was having a quiet day today so when a passing customer told her today was national dessert day she started planning out fun desserts for the evening.

Nell still had a lot to think about after the weekend, but mostly she was over the moon for Gladio. To be able to see his sister again after so long was amazing. It had been wonderful to see them together, watch them tease each other and laugh together. It just made her heart happy.

In other words, she could be excused if people found her singing quietly as she went about her work.

Plant Parenthood certainly didn't need the degree of deep cleaning that Covent Garden Flowers did, since Nell and Eleanor kept it up very well. That left Nell with plenty of time to put together some new orders and experiment a little with adding her own honey to some ideas she had for a new tincture.

In the afternoon she took time for her usual break with some fresh baked bread, with her own honey, and a cup of tea.

Please stop in to say hello and pick up anything you might need!

Today was a day for cleaning. Which meant everything taken down, cleaned to within an inch of its life, straightened, put back again, and organized. Walls, floors, shelves, nothing was safe.

The flowers had been through this before and just quietly made sure all their leaves and petals were in order and waited for it all to stop. It was worth it, they like a sparkling clean shop as well as Nell, but while the cleaning was going on it was a bit intense.

Nell was happily working in the store today. She knew Steven would be by later so they could harvest some honey and she was really looking forward to that. In the meantime she took care of the plants in the back and restocked the shelves. There seemed to have been quite a run on some of her lotions, so she made a note to make up some more of those when she had some time.

Nell had spent most of the weekend harvesting the honey from her beehives and storing it for further use. She'd also put quite a lot of it into jars to sell here at the store while reserving a good amount for herself and to use in the various things she made. The beeswax had also been carefully collected for use in her lotions and skin creams - and perhaps even a foray into beeswax candles if the molds for them ever came in.

All this to say that today there was a sign in the window announcing Fresh Local Honey!

Come on in and try some with Nell's scones and tea!

It was a quiet day today, which Nell took full advantage of in order to catch up on paperwork for both stores.

Midafternoon she had a visit from one of the raccoons with a pile of rocks because apparently it was national collect rocks day and they wanted to share. Which was nice of them, she thought as she set them aside. Now she had to figure out something to do with them.

Monday started off as a normal day, then partway through Nell sensed something and went running out of the store, pausing only long enough to turn off the lights and lock the door.

Nell was busily making up a simple syrup for the new hummingbird feeders and filling them up - once it had properly cooled, of course. When they were all finished she ran them up to the roof to set them out.

She left a 'Back in Fifteen Minutes' sign on the door when she left, just in case anyone stopped by, but she might just have forgotten to take it down when she returned. However, anyone looking in would see her bustling around the store. Unless it was later in the afternoon in which case they'd see her in a chair by the window with a book and a cup of tea.

Wherever she was, she was absolutely interruptible, so please do stop by!

The new stereo had come in yesterday and it was still working very well, not getting stuck on any songs at all, and the staff was under strict instructions to not let any of the gremlins near it if they could help it. This meant that Gladio had to deal with a couple of any gremlins that morning, giving him the stink eye, but he was fine with that. They knew what they did.

But, to kind of ease tensions a little bit, too, there was a Music Playlist Suggestion Box set up at the reception desk in the lobby now, too, with little cards to even include what time and days you were at the gym so that it could be more likely to hear what you wanted to hear while you worked out if you weren't working out to your own jams.

Gladio wasn't going to put it together; he was absolutely sending that task over to Prompto, because Prompto would go nuts for something like that, but it felt like a good compromise over, you know, letting gremlins play the same exact song on repeat all godsdamned day.

Nell didn't expect too much business today given that it was a holiday, but that just gave her more time to finish up the never ending paperwork. And a bit of an excuse to be a bit lazy in the afternoon once all the work was done.

Still, she was here and Covent Garden Flowers was open.
