Normally, there were two forested areas on Fandom: the Preserve, and the wooded area, wherein a certain creepy mansion and a magical Grove were located. Saturday morning, however, the island sported a third: a beautiful bit of forest that could have been transplanted from the English Midlands and right next to Selkie Cove. Magical, idyllic, and somehow just big enough for people to get lost within while undergoing shenanigans to in the name of freedom and self-discovery. Full of exotic fauna and pastoral fantasy, it seemed to whisper to promises of refuge and safety (if, for example, you were fleeing from the harsh realities of Courtly life), of adventure and excitement, and, oddly enough, of cross-dressing, if you're of a mind to do so.

It's said that All the world's a stage, / And all the men and women merely players; / They have their exits and their entrances; / And one man in his time plays many parts. This weekend, all the world's a forest, at least for Arden Finch.

The Merchant wasn't quite sure where he'd wound up that morning, but, well, they weren't nomadic for nothing, now, were they? After having looked around for where his donkey may have ended up with no such success, he'd made a quick, albeit just a touch nervous, assessment of his surroundings. Odd. All very odd, but surely no one would notice just a few things gone missing, making their way from the shelves of the sort of...was it a storehouse of sorts?...and into his packs. No matter, he'd be on his way soon enough, and an assessment of the area eventually lead him to finding a little nook, out of the way enough to not cause any trouble, but hopefully not so much that a few wandering souls might not pass by and feel compelled to relieve themselves of a couple hundred runes here and there.

He'd started a warm and crackling fire and, hunched over in his shaggy cloak and feathered cap, he'd settled in front of it. He cradled his instrument in his lap, but he did not play. He mostly just sat and watched the flames beside the lake, and wondered where he might find himself a new mount to continue on his journeys elsewhere, or if he should just remain here as a new spot to claim.

He supposed only time would tell...

So. Noctis was back, apparently, and the thing he wanted to do now that he was here and reunited with his chocobros was...

....go fishing.

Of course he wanted to go fishing, and, of course, how could any of them deny him that? The dude sacrificed himself to save the entire world. If he wanted to go fishing, they were going fishing.

That didn't mean they couldn't complain about it the whole time, though; in fact, them complaining about fishing was part of the whole fishing experience.

"It's far too late in the day already to get many bites, I'm afraid," Ignis observed softly.

"Maybe if someone didn't decide to just waste most of the morning sleeping in," Gladio snorted wryly.

"Come on, guys, coming back from the dead is probably pretty exhausting!" Prompto argued lightly.

"Maybe I'm not getting any bite because some people won't stop talking and are scaring all the fish away," Noctis pointed out.

"Nah," said Gladio, "they probably just got a look at that face."

But they were quiet after that, because this was all weird and surreal and it had been ever since he showed up at Gladio and Ignis' apartment last night, and there'd been plenty of time for catching up then, and a lot of really tangled up emotions that none of them had really figured out how to process just yet. So honestly, even if it was too late to be effective, even if their familiar quips and jabs or their ugly mugs were frightening the fish, it wasn't really about the fishing, anyway. It was sort of just about being there, together again, almost (almost) feeling whole.

"...you seriously named your kid after me, huh? Man, you really are bad at naming things, aren't you?"

"Don't think just because you're dead I won't push you into the water, dude."

...yeah. This...this was almost perfect, right about here.

(Almost).

Jester was determined to draw the entire island in her sketchbook if she could get away with it, and neither Yasha nor Beau's offers to get her a phone just so she could take pictures of all of it had convinced her in the slightest -- something about the drawings being her way of communing with the Traveler, which Yasha could respect, even if it was a little weird to her given that the Stormlord only talked to her through cryptic visions and, well, storms.

Also, as Beau had pointed out, Jester needed to be able to leave her little Traveler pamphlets and dick drawings everywhere. And Jester was determined to spend as much time with both of them as possible this weekend, so despite some reluctance on Yasha's part, she'd accompanied them on a long, meandering tour around the town this afternoon so they could do just that, and now they'd come up here to take a break and enjoy the view.

It wasn't so bad, she decided, taking a seat a little bit away from Jester and Beau as the two of them plotted out some scheme for Jester to rope Nott into, so they could prank Caleb and Fjord when she got home, and debating whether they could talk Caduceus into helping out with it. Being sort of adjacent to that group, even if she wasn't really a part of it -- it wasn't so bad.

It was strange to think about how for as much as Rey had used one before, and how much Jedi stuff she'd already done, she still wasn't used to having a lightsaber on her belt. She'd had this one for- what, a week?- before it was broken, and even then she'd been focused on getting rid of it.

Sometime near sunset, when it had cooled down more, Rey went out to Selkie Cove to do some drills. She had to make sure she was in a safe spot, clear of any porgs, but they seemed pretty used to people by now so they didn't get too close. She felt like she had to get to know it again, which was probably weird, but something that also made total sense to her.

Plus, honestly, it was fun.

Beau had, frankly, gotten off to a terrible start with Jamie yesterday morning, and while she still wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of having her future child (?!!?!) from some reality stuck with her sorry ass for a few days, she was extra determined to make up for her poor initial reaction. Call it a concentrated attempt to not be like her own parents out of sheer spite, if you would, because that was precisely what it was. Even if she had no idea what to do, she was going to spend time with this kid.

That still meant figuring out how to keep a five-year-old with alien powers and an apparently endless reserve of energy occupied -- preferably in places that weren't her apartment, because she'd already had to dissuade the kid from trying to fly off the balcony three times, which was about as much saying no as she was willing to do. After a long walk/run around the island, which hadn't seemed to put a dent in Jamie's energy level at all but left Beau slightly winded, they ended up by the lake, which seemed as good a place as any to let the kid test their powers out with minimal property damage.

"Okay, kid," Beau said, taking a seat atop a large rock and sending out a quick text message to let people know where she was if they needed to find her, "go nuts, but keep it away from the water, got it?"

"Got it," Jamie echoed with a bright, cheerful smile that Beau was pretty sure they had not gotten from her, "but sparring later too?"

Beau sighed, but there was a touch of an indulgent tone beneath all her awkward diffidence. "Yeah," she said, "sparring later. Whatever you want to do."

The kid could project energy beams. She wasn't even going to have a reach advantage on a five-year-old. That was kind of sad.

[OOC: Expecting a few people, but open (with patches of SP), why not? Also, just as a note, Jamie uses they/them pronouns, thanks.]

Octavia had gone exploring.

Usually, she spent a lot of her time out in the preserve, whenever she was feeling restless. But today, the rocky bits had called to her. Maybe it was the promise of physicality, the promise of strain. Or maybe it was just that it was a different way of being in an environment that wasn't as unfamiliar to her as the town was. The storefronts and the rikshaws and everything in between were a constant reminder of how far she was from where she still felt like she was supposed to be.

(And yet she continued to berate Bellamy for how stuck he was on trying to get back, and not caring about anyone or anything here.)

Whatever the reason, it paid off. The rocky bits were the workout she'd so sorely needed, and at the end of thre trek, she was treated to a wonderful view. She'd never seen Selkie Lake from this side before. And the only thing taking anything away from her enjoyment of it was a single thought that came to her out of nowhere:

Lincoln would have loved this.

Ada had fallen asleep in her tank last night. Where else did she sleep these days? But when she woke up... this, this water was fresh, she could feel the springs that were feeding into it, the cool currents sliding past her skin. Was that a rock? And another rock and... a fish? No one put fish in her tank, that was a recipe for disaster. Tasty disaster, but disaster.

A flip of her tail and Ada was barreling towards the surface at a speed no human could match, breaking past the water and-- huh. She couldn't see the bone yard anywhere. She recognized the smell of that bit of ocean, though, its familiar song starting to unfurl in the back corner of her brain as the sight of Selkie Peak loomed over her.

Ada sighed and hauled herself out of the lake on to a decent-sized flat slab of rock, ringing out her hair. "Well an' fine, I guess that's one way to get me to attend the reunion," she sighed, shaking her head. "Though can't say I much appreciate the magical kidnapping. You best put me back where you found me, Fandom, 'cause I got two shows on Monday when we hit Texas!"

Some days were harder than others.

Today was shaping up to be one of those hard days that Will seemed to have more often than not. Dreams of his parents had assaulted him last night, leaving him sleepless and tired. The lies, the mystery and their apparent 'deaths' had left him pretty raw inside. Being away from friends and familiarity didn't help but he was trying to trust Headmaster Rourke. Trying hard.

When he'd woken up before the sun had even decided to come up, he'd checked his tablet and found a short, succinct message from Coach Jericho.

Train. Awaken. Accept.

It was cryptic (which was typical of Coach Jericho) but something about it sent Will out into town, looking for some place to do what had been requested. The lake he found near Selkie Cove would do just fine. It took some time to set up the space for the training. He found some driftwood and liberally dropped several coins into the nooks and crannies in the weathered wood before he pushed it out into the middle of the lake.

With that done, Will tested the water. Cold but definitely not freezing like it'd be in Wisconsin. He stood on the edge of the lake and brought up his grid. The enhanced way of seeing meant he could spot rocks underneath the surface, dips and deepness within the water and the best possible way to get close to the driftwood to do his thing.

Will took about twenty steps back away from the lake before he shot forward and gained speed faster than any normal human. His feet hit the water and he caused so much surface tension that he ended up running on top of the water just as he'd hoped. He sped towards the driftwood and shot a hand out as he got closer. He pictured a nickel in his head, pictured it in his hand and used his mind to lift the coin from the driftwood and sail it several feet before it smacked into his palm as he ran by.

Then, he was back on the other side of the lake, dry and with a nickel in his hand. Now, time to do that about twenty times.

[Open place, sure. NFB on the exact nature of Will's powers for the time being but okay to say he was doing stuff around the lake! If anyone wants to witness the whole thing, that's cool with me.]

It was time to leave.

Five words, Romeo mused, but packed full of so much. He'd be out of the apartment by the end of the weekend, in Hawaii the next day, and back to Verona to begin work in his father's company a matter of days after that.

He did not know if he'd be back. He liked teaching and had come to love Fandom, but the life he saw ahead of him was that of a Montague in Verona, with his (third, perhaps, but also final) bride by his side.

Most of his friends were long gone from the island. Romeo's last goodbye was to a place. He took himself and a notebook to the beach, perched on a rock, and -- as he had so many times -- began to scribble his thoughts as he watched the waves roll in and out.

Sometimes, being in town got to feeling claustrophobic. Too many people with too many loyalties, all crowded together, dancing on eggshells while they pretended one thing and felt another...It all got so tiresome after awhile. After awhile, Karla felt on edge, jumpy; and needed to retreat somewhere to gather herself again. The park in town was a bad idea; it was part of the rounds of several of the regular patrollers. And the Preserve was also out. Not only was it in the heart of Umbrage's territory, it was also where Karla had her secret vegetable garden. Which meant she limited her visits there as strictly as possible; the last thing she needed was to attract the wrong kind of attention by sneaking in there too often.

So instead of the obvious places, when Karla escaped the town, it was usually to somewhere on the edge of the island, where she could look at the sea and dream of home or, at least, happier times. Back where there had been happier times, anyway, like brief flashes in the dark.

Usually, Karla was silent when she snuck away to center herself. Today, however, Fandom intervened. As it occasionally did.

Dammit, Fandom.

"Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows.
Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play.
The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you.
The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you...

The impulse to sing left her and she stood there, wrinkling her nose. "That's bullshit," she announced to no one in particular. "I'm not about to die for a lack of anyone."

Selkie...

The residents of Fandom had long memories, as did Fandom herself. Long memories and many residents.

Peak!

Cove!

Peak!

Cove!

Peak!

Doink-doink!

Cove!

Chunk-chunk!

Screw this, thought Fandom, when there was enough of her remembered for her to remember she was sentient and could remember too.

Which was why Galactica Drive now ran past scenic Selkie Lake, and the long-lost Selkie Cove nestled sandily and cave-ily at the foot of Selkie Peak.

While she was at it, it was also why the frakking parking lot was now attached to the island instead of hanging around in Alexandria, Baltimore, and possibly Cleveland depending on how mentally grumbly the residents had been about leaving their cars.

If IKEA also had a slightly firmer and rounder western view, that was nobody's business but Fandom's.

Selkie Cove, Monday

Monday found the iceberg still stuck to Fandom.

If it was at all possible for icebergs to look smug, this one did. Of all the icebergs in all the oceans, only it had been smart enough to find a life of luxury nestled next to a nice warm island.
[identity profile] cheminthehead.livejournal.com
What with all the icebergs floating around yesterday, it really wasn't all that surprising that one rather large one should hit the island and decide to stay for awhile.

It was huge and extremely solid, a floating island of ice caves and twisted natural sculpture, flat expanses and pockets of deep snow, that one could simply step onto and explore.
[identity profile] cheminthehead.livejournal.com
Antarctica was one of the coldest places on Earth. And now, just off the coast, was a great big chunk of warm.

Tuesday morning found the beach at Selkie Cove awash with seals. Happy, barking, frolicking seals, who were very pleased to find a polar bear and orca free environment in which to sun themselves.

Being not at all familiar with humans, they had no fear of them, and so would merely react with puzzlement and/or curiosity at seeing one. Any food that might be offered would definitely be looked upon with favour.

[ooc: come and look at/feed and/or play with/pat (within reason; they're still wild critters!) the seals! Seals can lumber around, so also feel free to mod them as being around the town, but not up in the school or grounds. The hill's a wee bit steep for them.]

Lana wasn't very interested in trying to sleep in the cabins. Too many people, too hard to keep waking herself up before the nightmares caught hold of her.

Instead she was out on her favorite rock at Selkie Cove, watching the stars and the new coastline. It was enough and she was feeling happily content.

There was a break in the rain this morning, and it had left the air cool, the wind whipping off the ocean crisp and clean, as it the salt washed it free of any taint.

Harriet tipped her head back and closed her eyes, just for a moment, before looking down at the young girl holding her hand. "What do you say, Lauren? Does this look like a good spot?"

Lauren was already pulling off her shoes, and Harriet turned to glance at the third member of this very strange trio. "And you, Sarah?" And my, it was hard to remember not to address her by rank. "Does this suit you?"

It had been a long and confusing couple of weeks and Lana was tired of holing up in her room. Of course, her interactions with others hadn't exactly always been going smoothly either.

Some of her happiest memories were from here and some of her best thinking was done here too. And she had quite a little to think about.

It only took her a minute to climb up onto her favorite rock and stretch out in the warm sun. The sound of the waves and the sight of the sun glimmering off the surface of the water worked their magic and before long she was feeling more relaxed than she'd felt since she'd gotten back.

She hadn't heard from Chris since she'd left his room Thursday and wasn't really sure when she would. Or if she would. Or if she really wanted to. She wasn't sure if she was upset or sad or mad. A series of beeps interrupted his thoughts. "And there it is," he muttered, scrolling through the readout. 31:08:2007:05:00 followed by a set of coordinates.

The airships were still floating over Selkie Cove. On the ground below the wooden cage was now full of flying blue hedgehogs, who were singing a sad, mournful melody. The goblins on the other hand seemed quite enthusiastic and were talking to each other in their own tongue. One of them, the one carrying the staff and a heavy book, was singing a cheerful song in what sounded like an attempt to compete with the hedgehogs.

Slowly two ropes were hauled down from one of the airships and the goblins on the ground connected them to the cage. The singing of the hedgehogs turned louder.

Two airships slowly approached the island. As they drew closer any observers might be able to make out warlike symbols painted in garish colours on the sides of the rather patched up ships, accompanied by something that looked like text in a strange language. Reaching Selkie Cove, the two ships circled for a while, then let down their anchors. A rope ladder was rolled down from each airship and a number of figures nimbly climbed down from one of them, carrying between them a large wooden cage. Once on the ground, the cage was firmly attached to the ground with ropes. Three of the ship crew stayed close to the cage, while the remaining four headed off towards the town.

She sat and watched the water and the few high clouds in the sky, remembering how tightly he'd held her, the words he'd whispered, and how she'd watched till the cab disappeared in the distance.

Jack and D'anna had roped in a bunch of people to help, and the stretch of beach they'd appropriated was starting to look pretty damn good.

There were tall torches, stuck in the sand to give light once the sun went down. There was a bar (you might think you recognise the moddable bartender, but you'd be wrong) under cover of a sail, a barbecue and tables near by with an endless array of moddable food.

Chairs and towels and blankets were available in plentiful supply, and moddable anything else you might need to be comfortable. The music was playing, speakers scattered around the area to ensure it could be heard by all, with a flat spot cleared for dancing.

Since it was a Seahorse party, there was a discrete sign propped against the bar which read, Shirtlessness Encouraged.

An unlit bonfire was waiting for the sun to set, and Jack grinned as he got himself a large drink with a paper umbrella in it, grabbed a chair, and propped his feet up on a rock, waiting for people to arrive.

Lana found herself up early this morning, but without work or classes until after lunch. after talking with Marie about Selkie's Cove last night she found she really missed the peacefulness of it and decided that this lovely cool morning would be a perfect time to go sit on the rocks and watch the waves.

After a stop to grab some chai and a pastry, Lana made her way out to her favorite watching rock. She spread out the blanket she'd brought and made herself comfortable.

Ah... she'd missed this.

[OOC: Absolutely open. Feel free to come chat or commune with Lana or find yourself another rock entirely to sit on. :) ]

Tim heard the rocks slide as his feet slid out from under him. Fortunately all he hurt was his pride and his tailbone, and it didn't feel like that was too bad actually.

Ahead of him, he heard something else moving amongst the rocks of the beach, just out of sight.

ooc: open for anyone.

Bel shimmered to Selkie Cove, searching for his girlfriend-turned-fish. The waxing moon gave him enough light to see the shoreline and the water lapping at the rocks.

"Phoebe!" he called out toward the waves.
