Dinner was apparently going to be American today. Kids' preference. And after a tour of the island, they'd also asked for it to be at Fast Eddies. Jaime had vetoed it immediately, insisting on something more substantial than nachos and soda for dinner. Del had agreed and apparently not just because Jaime had said it. Alex had rolled his eyes and stubbed his toe into the ground, but didn't push. He did when Momoko requested Cafe Fina, though. Apparently they ate at family restaurants like that in Tokyo City all the time.

"So, what? Mooby Land?" Momoko had suggested as a joke.

...

"I am totally getting an extra shake for this," she muttered a few minutes later to Jaime as they carried the trays of Mooby Meals to the table where the kids were waiting.

Jaime had not been expecting a phone call this morning. Certainly not from some kid who was trying to sound calm but obviously more than a little panicked. And Momoko and Jaime's budget had not been expecting emergency portal bookings, either.

But after ten or fifteen minutes on the phone to calm down his caller, Jaime and Momoko had packed a couple of bags, booked a last-minute portal, and headed to Fandom. "Didn't have enough time to get all the details," he was saying, trying to sound calm himself as he and Momoko headed for the spot the kid who'd called had said they should meet up. "But something was definitely up. The way he talked sounded... I don't know. Off, I guess."

Much like the last time this event had taken place, it would appear to anyone who came to the community center tonight that whoever had been responsible for decorating for the reunion mixer actually had some taste. The decorations were simple - blue linen on the tables with gold flowers as centerpieces, and a notable lack of any tacky accoutrements - but there was, of course, gold and blue glitter scattered just about everywhere.

Don't tell us you hadn't missed it, old Fandomites.

Momoko and Jaime arrived on Sunday and quickly found that none of the children on the island were theirs. Momoko... wasn't sure how to take that.

But JJ apparently didn't have instilled in him the strict 'no spoilers' rules that her other kids did, so she was totally pumping him for information over an early dinner.

"So the portals closed?" Momoko asked, urging JJ to go one with the story. The one explaining how she and Jono had ended up together.

JJ nodded. "When they reopened, apparently the whole dimension had reset. Mr. Reyes was a teenager again, his whole personality and history had changed."

Momoko looked aghast at Jaime. "That can happen?!"

"No." Bo crossed her arms behind the bar and ignored the balloon Tiny was holding out to her. "I already told you my terms. The whole thing or no deal."

Tiny held up his phone in the other hand, then made a show of putting it away. Bo just shook her head.

"No. I don't care if you record me. I'm just not doing it without the quid pro quo." She reached out and bopped the balloon lightly. "Every. Single. Verse."

Which was why anyone visiting the bar tonight, including the guests at Warren and Karla's birthday party, would find themselves treated to a high-pitched -- and very long -- performance of I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major-General from the huge guy in the leather vest.

Bo's performance, they'd have to be very good at searching YouTube (or know Tiny's username) to find, and also fast enough to get there before Bo filed the fake DMCA takedown notice. Or the obscenity one. She was still trying to decide which seemed more likely coming from Disney.

The weirdness had, yet again, skipped Jake.

He was honestly at the point where his relief at being skipped over by these things actually looped around full circle until he was worried that this meant Fandom had something big planned for him, eventually.

It's a good thing he worked in a bar, because Jake's method of dealing with this sort of sense of foreboding was to drink. Heavily.

Worried that all the glitter on the island had been used up at the dance or at yesterday's festivities? Worry no more! Because today's brunch possibly featured more glitter than the previous two days combined, though someone very intelligent had made it so that most of the glitter was located on signs and posters conveniently located out of most children's reach. Because no one wanted kids eating glitter.

The music was wolf-themed but quiet and non-scary enough to be kid-friendly. Though maybe it hadn't been the best idea to overinflate those wolf-shaped balloons.

Live and learn.

Today, when all the children awoke in their beds, they would discover a most joyous occasion! There was a carnival in town! A carnival just for them! All the rides and events were all child-safe and kid-friendly. Even the thematic decorations had become kiddified; no worries about nightmares from this little guy, huh? Didn't he look like fun? Don't you just want to give him a hug?

As for any remaining adults on the island, well...there was still a carnival, okay? Sure, the rides were a lot tamer and a lot brighter and you were possibly too tall to ride the them, but it was still a carnival! A carnival soon to be filled with the loud laughter of many, many children all hyped up on drinks and food that all listed 'sugar' as their prime ingredient!

Truly, this was a day of fun and laughter for all! And probably a night filled with headaches and belly-aches for most!

Huzzah!

It wasn't safe for him to be out and about so soon after the jailbreak, so shortly after regaining his freedom right along with everyone else in detention. Especially not taking into consideration the fact that he hadn't been able to get his hands on enough leather to so much as fake a set of bandages, to keep the riot of flames pouring from his body hidden as he walked through the dark. But so help him, Jonothon hadn't seen the sunlight in three damn years, and he swore to himself, if he ever tasted freedom again, there was only one thing he knew for certain that he was going to do.

The rest of his life was up in the air, wide open with no direction to it at all.

But this morning he was going to stand on the beach and he was going to watch a sunrise. Just one. And then he'd get on with sorting out whatever was left.

Jaime knew he should be asleep. Tomorrow promised to be a big day, after all. But that was why he couldn't seem to relax. His mind kept running around in circles.

So rather than simply sitting restlessly in his room, he decided to at least do something that was potentially useful. Not that anyone would need anything from the front desk, probably, but just in case.

Besides, maybe there would be something he could do. About... something.

Anything, really.

So instead of fidgeting in bed, unable to sleep, he was seated in the lobby. Fidgeting. Unable to sleep.

Jaime was distracted. Which wasn't entirely unusual. What was unusual was that he was distracted enough to, well, be noticeably distracted. He was usually quite good at being attentive and helpful and getting work done.

And of having a good idea of where the loyalties of everyone around him lay. Considering the work he did on the side, that was pretty important.

But today he was just distracted. He was at the front desk turning a bit of pink plastic over and over in his hands. It looked an awful lot like a make-up compact, actually. Not something that Jaime was likely to have considering the fact that he didn't wear make-up himself, and that he didn't really spend that much time around people who did. Mostly because he didn't spend that much time around people.

Maybe he'd just found it lying around somewhere. That seemed likely.

Every so often he would shake himself, trying to escape whatever thoughts held him in reverie, and look around. After all, he had a job to do. Two, really. Assisting Arms guests was one, and doing what little he could for the Resistance was the other.

And given his discussion with Ender the day before, that second one was beginning to feel more urgent.
[identity profile] gameinprogress.livejournal.com
They would have to take more of the heavy hitters out of the equation.

Ender knew that much.

Tony had been too wary to get too close to, but there was a chance they could pull him aside eventually. That wouldn't amount to much, though; he was just one player. But it would be something.

Ender sighed, leaning back in his seat in his little makeshift room. They had put up a deadline because he knew that without it, people would continue to be scattered in their efforts, and prone to give in to desperation. The downside of this was that they had a deadline, and time was ticking, and while Peter had mentioned some promising ideas coming in...

"I could have used you here, Bean," he murmured.

The large expanse of the mostly-empty attic was dimly lit, with scattered old boxes here and there. He could hear Peter tinkering with his desk in the next room, but that was that. Quiet.

Notices had gone out to all and sundry, inviting both those who still lived on the island as well as those who'd moved away to come back for a dance at the Fandom Town community center, in celebration of the 43rd (give or take a day) anniversary of the original moon landing, as well as the wonderful summer they were having.

Once people arrived, they'd find the community center's auditorium decorated according to the theme of the evening. Silver streamers hung all around, and a few papier mache moons had been fixed to the ceiling. The lights were dimmed, and there were flowers – most white, but some of them colored silver – on all the tables, bringing the faint scent of summer with them.

And naturally, there were big tables full of food, like at any large Fandom gathering. There was also a bar, though those underage would have to content themselves with sodas and virgin drinks. Maybe they could get over their sorrow over that on the dance floor, showing off their best Moonwalk.

Everything was ready for the people of Fandom to have a good time.

Jaime needed coffee.

And space.

Not really to think about things. He had no idea what he'd even think about. Or, more accurately, he wasn't sure what thinking would accomplish. On the one hand, seeing kids that could potentially have been his as relatively well-adjusted teenagers had been kind of cool. On the other hand, they really just served as reminders that he was... unsettled ("unhappy" wasn't something he was going to admit quite yet). They seemed to come from a happy family, one where he and Momoko, somehow, worked out.

A family that he was never going to get to see, except through these brief glimpses.

So: coffee. And some breathing space. To just... wallow think.

The glitter moosen and beavers had been moved to the park to stand friendly guard around a cluster of tents, tables and chairs. Underneath, the Homecoming events rolled on with another maple-themed buffet and plenty of space for standing around and chatting.

The sound system played kd lang and Leonard Cohen at a low volume, to gently welcome anyone who might have gotten into the punch last night after it was spiked. This event was decidedly hangover-friendly.

The blasted heath was really enjoying itself now. Having turned everything in the campgrounds to ashes, it now spread to cover the park in full, twisting its creatures into grotesque shapes. Even sand on the beach had greyed, and tiny crabs were both growing bigger and more fearsome.

The taint climbed up the walls, destroying ivy and mosses that might have rested on them. It would take time for the rock and cement to grow brittle and crumble, but it would not be more than a few days before even the buildings of Fandom Town would submit, and turn to ashes.

The heath now reached its tendrils slowly into one direction. The dorms, once so far away, coming ever closer to its reach.

Momoko loved the Cafe Fina for many reasons, mostly having to do with the food. But she also loved the cafe staff, and the fact that they put up with so much from her.

Which was totally what they were doing now. She had a large table in the back of the dining room covered in papers and calendars and notebooks, her laptop set to one side; August was only eight days away and after that, she and Jaime would be leaving the island for different worlds. She was totally not going to give him up without a fight, and so she was trying to work on a plan.

She was working so hard on it, actually, that she didn't notice the bowl of beef stew the Napkin had just set in front of her... and because she was reading a pricing brochure from Portalocity, no less!

The wait staff had an amused side-bet going on with the kitchen staff about whether or not she'd break when they brought out the white chocolate raspberry chocolate tart.

Dinner had been nice. It occurred to Jaime as he and Momoko walked along the street that they didn't go out nearly often enough. It was just so much easier to stay in and watch DVDs and eat junk food. They'd sort of fallen into a routine. And... while that was fun, he didn't want to... just do that.

So they'd had a real date. And he'd even let himself get talked into taking Momoko shopping for a 'real' cowboy hat. And then boots. And a belt.

The kind that didn't make her look like a tourist.

"See?" he explained, arm linked through hers. "Much better than that tourist-y thing you got in El Paso."

The first arrivals to the warehouse would have found nothing - until the lights went on, dropping many shades of glitter down onto the floor. The glitter would stick around all night, almost-but-not-quite clashing with the colorful decor, though it did not seem to incite any boykissy.

Even if one of the janitors definitely took a shot at using it as an excuse.

Some would rejoice, others would cry, and a good chunk of Fandom's population would probably wind up with mixed feelings. This portal had brought the children onto the island but two nights ago, and now it had reversed the polarity of the neutron flow returned to take them back.

It floated calmly in the middle of the park's clearing, exuding a soft yellow light. It wouldn't steer the children wrong.

Momoko was sitting in the Cafe Fina, poking a spoon at a parfait. She'd tried rifling through the cupboards of the common room, looking for something to eat, but she needed more than just candy and packaged cookies to deal with the two unopened envelopes on the table in front of her. So far, she'd finished three slices of cake, one slice of pie, and two bowls of warm cobbler a la mode.

She pushed at the two envelopes with her parfait spoon, frowning. The results of her National Exams and Police Academy test had both arrived in today's mail. Both marked confidential, both meaning different ways for her life to go. Both reminding her that school ended in just a few months.

Did it mean something if one was a thicker envelope than the other? Hadn't one of Dinah's university letters been thicker? Which one was it; the good news or the bad?

"And what exactly do I think is good news?" Momoko frowned and dug back into her parfait, completely not wanting to open either envelope. She hadn't had nearly enough snacks yet.

Jaime had a couple of SAT prep books he needed to spend some time going through. And that? Required coffee.

Fortunately for him, there was a place where he could get it. After ordering the largest black coffee that the Perk would furnish him with, Jaime found a table slightly out of the way and began to set up camp. Notebook, test prep books, laptop (wifi was amazing), and coffee. What more did a boy need to score high on the SATs so that his life plans didn't crash and burn before they got off the ground?

Just on the other side of the Causeway, the weather was cool, but in Fandom, a beautiful, warm nearly-summer evening welcomed Fandom's seniors and juniors to their Prom.

A large tent open on one side had been erected in the center of the park. Garlands of small white lights entwined with greenery decorated the edges and roof of the tent, while two of the canvas sides were covered in large pictures of cherry blossoms and the middle had a wall-sized painting of a masquerade. Under the canopy were clusters of little chairs and tables along with the table of food and punch bowl.

Beyond the tent's open wall, a dance floor had been set up on the grass under the conveniently flowering trees. More fairy lights had been wound through the tree branches leaving the area softly lit in most areas. Torches were placed in a few clusters around the dance floor, making flickering areas of brighter light for people to congregate.

A photographer waited for his clients just beyond the dance floor with several backdrops of flowers or masquerades or, oddly, a lemur family to choose from.

The voting box for Prom King and Queen stood right at the entrance to the dance for those last-minute votes.

And, of course for Fandom's Masquerade, a table of elaborately decorated (or some more simple ones) waited for their new owners to simply slip them on and join the revelry.

When Miyako crept down the inside stairs to Cafe Fina, she was tired, a little hungry, and incredibly frustrated. She'd finally determined that she was -- somehow -- on Earth, and not in the Digital World, but she still had no idea how she'd gotten where she was, she didn't have Hawkmon with her, and she was more than a little frustrated that her friends hadn't replied to her messages.

So she'd spent the night tossing and turning with worry, she'd been hesitant to use the (well-stocked) kitchen, and thus she'd ended up creeping down to Cafe Fina in hopes that someone would tell her what's going on.

Of course, the Cheese Grater took one look at her, frowned, and forced an apron into her hands. "You'll do," he said, and then shoved her towards the specials sign.

If you wanted to know why, you might get an idea from the cartoon mouse pin that had replaced the smiley face on her jacket, or from the guidebook to Disneyland she kept flipping through in between customers. Last shift before winter break, and Dinah was admiring the red and green streaks in her hair and on her face now, thanks. And laughing at the note someone from an earlier shift had left in response to hers.

The poinsettas really did look kind of ominous. She arranged them behind a little fence enclosure, and watched them for a few minutes, then wrote another note.

I think I have the poinsettas cornered, guys. Don't turn your backs on them. The garlands are looking suspiciously innocent and the watering can is missing again. Watch yourselves!

Lance Sweets, Doctor Extraordinaire, was not currently on duty and, as such, decided to indulge in a cup of coffee and the Sunday paper. He spent a lot of time reading the obituaries and regretting that he hadn't been able to save all those poor people with his amazing medical skills.

[expecting one, but can be open if you want to talk to Sweets/need emergency medical care. or use for your own Perk needs]

There was something that Emma had been meaning to do for months, but it had just kept slipping her mind. Until today.

So after a quick trip to the post office to mail two envelopes; one addressed to Rosto the Piper, Tortall, and the other to Morton diGlacia, and both filled with pictures of certain young ladies all dressed up for Homecoming, Emma was at the Perk. Thoroughly enjoying her large latte and a book, and a mission well-done.

And if Karla whined, it was all her fault anyway from yesterday's little note-passing conversation.

Emma was not above playing dirty, no.

"We never did get to do this while we were at the resort," Dinah said, holding the door open for Clark, "But I still owe you some ice cream. What's your poison?"

[for a [livejournal.com profile] redandblueblur, but open, as ice cream places are]

There was a buzzing in the air as Momoko flew the helicopter around the park. A sudden movement on the ground distracted her for just a moment, but it was long enough in 'flight time' that when she looked back up, the helicopter was heading into some trees. She worked the controls frantically, and managed to gain enough air and speed that she barely clipped the branches, but she wasn't home free - in fact, after just a few feet, the craft began to sputter and fall to the ground.

"No no no!" She jiggled the small box she was holding but the falling chopper was out of range of the remote. She ran closer and managed to catch the machine just before it hit the ground. She checked for any scratches or damage; she didn't want to explain to Reno that she'd broken the toy he'd given her. "That would be an awkward phone call," she muttered, relieved.

It was good, though, and she sent it up again, following with the remote. She shifted her voice a bit: "Kshhh. Roger, base. We are good to go. The alien tree monster appears to have lost interest after catching us in its forcefield. Sending coordinates and continuing surveillance of the planet. Over."

[Open, as the park is. Feel free to join the exploration!]

"Welcome back," Ghanima began, looking over the assorted company. "I'm pleased to see we didn't scare too many of you off by forcing introductions."

"Luckily for you, there aren't any enforced group bonding activities today. Only sparring."

"Sparring," Tyler concurred. "No talking. And, since we're huge now, more matches. You and you, you and you, you in the back and you trying to look too cool for this. Ghanima, pick the last six."

"You can talk to other people, of course, but only if you want to. And you should introduce yourself to your partner," she commented dryly. "Let's see. You, sir, with her. And you and you. Leto, with her."

"Everyone else, grab someone, grab some mat, and start punching."

"We're here if you need us," Tyler added, retreating back to observe.
