It was the last day of the reunion and Jessica figured she needed to take a moment alone. Get some solitude, a place to be with her thoughts for a little bit, in a quiet place. The beach would work. Have some white noise from the water, what could possibly be more relaxing.

When she got there, food was already on the grill, the volleyball net was set up, and a pig was sitting next to a spit, eating from a trough. There had to be a story there. And wait, who started grilling food on a beach only to leave it, and a pig? If this was Fandom magic, it was really weird Fandom magic.

Anyway, alone-time apparently wasn't happening. She could settle for some BBQ as long as she avoided anything that might have come from that pig's family.

The chances of Atton achieving anything remotely resembling a good mood were pretty much zero at the moment. Below zero, in fact.

So when he stepped outside the MCA that morning and watched a bunch of zombie gremlins shambling towards him, he just sighed. "I don't want to deal with this today," he said.

The zombies didn't seem terribly impressed by that, so he lit his lightsaber with a snap-hiss. "No, seriously," he said. "I really, really, really don't want to deal with this today--"

Originally, this was going to be a much smaller event, but then Fandom had to be Fandom and Portalocity had to be Portalocity, and now Zoe was wondering if there would be enough food for everyone or if she'd have to get things from the local restaurants.

For the moment though, everything was set up nicely. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and gold tablecloths, each covered with glitter from years of use. There were balloons, streamers, and other slightly tasteful decorations, also covered in glitter from years of being stored with things that were also covered in glitter. Don't worry, no one had died from a glitter overdose yet.

Once the food was set out and the (non-tainted) punch was ready, it seemed like things were as good to go as they'd ever be. If things got too crowded, hopefully a fire marshal wasn't among the folks who had come back to town.

The weather was still behaving itself, so the sun was beaming down brightly (which might not be appreciated by those who overindulged last night), the humidity wasn't unbearable, and the mosquitoes were keeping to themselves.

Beneath a generously be-glittered banner that read "20th ANNIVERSARY REUNION!" was a veritable feast of breakfast-y foods on tables that looked dangerously close to toppling under the weight.

There were pastries, various egg dishes, and yogurt parfaits in mason jars (because Pinterest might have died ten years ago but mason jars were forever). There was more coffee than should probably be legal.

Come out! Tend to your hangovers! Explain any walks of shame!

Eric would have hosted the New Year's Eve party at the Devil's Nest, but he suspected that the students wouldn't appreciate his "no, no alcohol for you" stance and here in a different venue, he could avoid some of the liability. (Eric hadn't lived a thousand years by being a very stupid vampire.)

The ballroom was decked out far more classily than it had for school dances in shades of cream, silver, and black: there were sumptuous fabrics draped to soften the room , gilt mirrors to add light, and sparkling crystal because Eric liked expensive crystal. For those who ate, there was top shelf alcohol, more than enough champagne and all kinds of fancy appetizers (and pigs in blankets because shut up). For those who didn't eat, well, the bartenders wouldn't be suprised for requests of O Positive.

The DJ was playing the top 40 hits of the year, but could be persuaded to play anything that wasn't Justin Bieber (Eric had glamoured the hell out of him had a Talk with him, and now as far as the DJ knew, Justin Bieber didn't exist).

Happy New Year's Eve, Fandom. Put on your tuxedo and come party with a vampire.

The full moon was over for the month with no more damage done to Jack than usual, and Jack had a week's distance from that other world.

He wasn't quite all right. Even someone with his impressive repression skills needed more than seven days to get over being dead. But he was feeling normal enough to hum along with the stereo as he got to work, and to make a small wager with Tiny on the women's soccer games later that day.

Jack put his money on Japan and Canada before settling in with some supplier contracts.

In a stunning display of his own ability to avoid Fandom insanity without even knowing it, Mitchell hadn't been around for the past week. Sure, Nina and George's behavior had become increasingly more erratic, and he was worried - worried enough to stick around for longer than intended.

Still, he was getting back to work. He helped the staff set up the sign in the morning--

Mitchell had been gone for two weeks, and, well. The other investors had made good work of that time. The building was now covered in ads for the current feature, urging people to bring their kids in for a rollicking adventure.

Or this appalled, as Mitchell arrived fresh off his portal and found himself staring.

There was a holiday week coming up - traditionally not the busiest time on the island, and it had been quiet for Mitchell anyway. As a result, he'd made a quick detour past Wales to check in on Nina and George, just to... have something to do. It hadn't quite helped his feeling generally listless, though.

Now he was back, and picking films again. Some of the new ones just coming in at the box office were more interesting than they appeared, and so he'd scheduled one.

October 1st, 2011. Kate's 18th birthday. On Fandom, anyway.

That was the big reason she was here, bright and early. She hadn't heard anything from Bod so she assumed she was in the clear as far as Silas showing up was concerned, and this was just another mundane Saturday in early September back in Kansas, so she'd hopped a portal and here she was, heading to the Perk first for a hot chocolate and a muffin for breakfast.

And being her, she sent out a mass text to all her friends she figured would be on the island on this fine Saturday:

eighteen, bitches! holding court at the perk this morning, come say hi if you're not swamped with guests.

She was so not above attention whoring when it was her birthday and her parents wouldn't acknowledge it for another month. She picked a table by the window and settled down to peoplewatch with her treats.

Unlike half the island, Mitchell had only spent a few passing thoughts on 'a hole in the wall? really?' and 'a fucking volcano' before he'd wisely decided to move on. He was coming up on a hundred and twenty in two years - he'd seen his fair share of insane shit.

Still, he thought it was probably a good thing to run a movie today that had as little to do with super-dramatic soap-operas as he could manage. It meant a bit of digging around the old box, but, still, he was happy with what he'd come up with. It was due for a rewatch, anyway.

It was still awfully quiet without Kate or Jack around. Mitchell was starting to think he might have to start inviting Bo over every week just to keep him from staring at the walls, brooding about the past couple of months. (Not that he wasn't going to do that anyway, but...)

He helped the crew set up the sign in the morning, then padded in by himself, hands in his pockets. He'd probably check in to see the movie in a short bit, but right now his thoughts were his main focus. Fuck, he hated remembering.

The theater seemed a little quieter now, in the absence of two particular people. Which was a stupid way to feel, considering that Jack had never really come in to the theater except the once, and Kate had always had Wednesdays, but that was just the way of it. Then again, Mitchell had dealt with worse losses in his life, and so he was hardly going to let that rule him.

He did, however, put a sign up by the window that said HELP WANTED! in big screaming letters, just in case one of the kids was cinematically inclined. Hell, Kate hadn't been, and she'd done a capable job anyway.

That done, he headed back into the theater to get to work.

The NOW SHOWING sign said GOODBYE, KATE, which hadn't actually been Mitchell's idea; he'd shown up in the morning to find it already hanging there. Apparently it could be blamed squarely on Box Office Guy, but Mitchell chose not to question him about it.

He did order them about to set up the drinks in a slightly more party-like configuration, put out some bowls of nachos, and promised the staff they'd shut down early to make it a proper party. Sort of.

Incidentally, Mitchell was also heavily repressing the fact that she was leaving. He did things his way, okay?

Kate was picking up an extra shift this week after having missed yet another one last week. And she was glad that she had, if what little she'd heard of the latest catastrophe held true.

She wasn't thinking much about that. She was trying to ignore every bad thing that might have been lurking around the edges of her mind, holding on to all the good of last week. The movie choice for today reflected that, too.

To say Mitchell was worried about Bo was putting it mildly. He hadn't seen her in days, not after she woke up that morning - and she hadn't answered her phone, either.

But something had shifted that morning, and it wasn't just the Magic Kingdom out in the distance over there. There wasn't anything bad stalking the streets, and the place felt less wrong to his senses. So Mitchell decided to take a chance, and got up early to set up the theatre.

It wasn't like it was her fault she kept getting turned into a cat or yanked away to do shit that was far more important than running the concessions stand hardly anyone visited.

And in any case, she was there now, and that was all that mattered. Not that she seemed to be working too hard, mostly engrossed with some things on her phone and jotting down a list of things on a small notepad.

But hey, she'd picked the movie for today!

"The island," Jack announced to no one in particular as he wandered into Caritas for the first day of his new job, "is full of ponies."

The surly pony behind the bar rolled its eyes at Jack and flicked a dishrag at him with its teeth, as if pointing out it had already noticed that.

Jack rolled his eyes right back at the pony and slid into place. He wasn't an expert bartender, but he reckoned he had an automatic advantage over the one with hooves.

This morning, Mitchell had taken one look in the mirror and decided he'd be better off staying in bed. This wasn't so unusual the past few weeks, really, but this time he felt he had a much better reason.

Of course, then George had called, and failing to take up that phone call (because of the hoove problem) had led to increasingly annoyed voicemails on his machine, so in the end Mitchell braved the streets down to the office anyway.

Eric and Jack were back in front of the classroom again, and laptops had been placed on each person's desk. "Tonight we will work with a simulation that will let you experience the importance of making proper financial decisions without risking any real money," Eric said.

Via being stranded on a weird planet full of slime. Eric thought he was amusing. "Please run through the simulation and then tell us how much money you managed to save up by July. Could you afford your return ticket home?"

Eric had been able to, easily. Jack...not so much. "What investments did you make? Did you choose to eat less food, commute? Skip vacations?" He waved his hand. Last night, Kate had finally managed to get a call through to her mother after nearly a week of trying (and before that, over a week of not bothering to even try because she'd needed a bit of distance). She'd been expecting to have to cover for why she'd been out of contact for so long, but her mother had actually seemed pretty mellow, and hadn't said a single thing about any missed calls.

The explanation had come soon enough, though. When Kate had carefully asked about how Charmaine had been doing after the wedding/family secret unveiling extravaganza, her mom had said the strangest thing. "Well, I think she's still coming to terms with it, I mean it's only been three days."

...According to Kate's perception of the world, it had been over two weeks. Oh yeah. Welcome to having timeline issues, Kate. She was pretty adamant to not think about that at all today. Her senior prom was coming up, so it really was time to think about accessories, rather than give herself a headache trying to figure out interdimensional time differences or, God forbid, think about the stuff she'd told Mitchell about a few days ago.

The hardest question she wanted to be dealing with today was who was going to ask who to the prom. (She figured it was Bod's turn this year.) The day's movie was a comedy, too, and she approved of that.

Hannibal hadn't counted on being back on the island so soon. In fact, he'd been perfectly content to hole up in Abigail's spare room, eating Ramen noodle and letting his own guilt overwhelm him until he eventually withered away from old age.

Of course, that hadn't happened so he was back. It kind of sucked that it was overcast so he couldn't sit in the sun but Hannibal figured that not showing up at all because of that would have been worse than showing up and sitting underneath a cloudy sky. He'd just let other things prove that he wasn't who he had been anymore.

Despite the overcast day, he was wearing sunglasses because he wasn't quite sure what was going to greet him and he could hide a lot this way. There was a cold coffee in one hand and Hannibal was slouched back on the bench, eyes up on the clouds and feet stretched out in front of him. Don't judge. She was trying hard not to have a mild panic attack over the coming weekend. She wasn't even sure what was making her so nervous about it, but she knew the jumpiness was there, and it needed to be ignored. It was those messages, along with the phonecall that had followed, and the roses that had arrived for her this morning that had left Kate in a far better mood than she'd been in yesterday. Apparently, Zach couldn't eat or sleep or stop thinking about her. He'd promised Cally he'd try to accomodate some children's fare, and that's why today, the theater was topped with the following bill:

NOW PLAYING:
Terrible I

He was hoping that would be worthwhile for her, anyway.

Thanks to a late portal and some ... tension between Nina and George, the source of which Mitchell was a little too aware of, Mitchell barely made it to the Perk before closing. Still, there was about half an hour left before the doors shut, and they were still willing to serve him some coffee, so there was that.

He sagged back in a seat, coffee in hand, and stared up at the lights in the ceiling. The past few days hadn't been all bad - even if he still felt like an awkward nit about Lucy - and at least it was putting some distance between him and the whole ugh with Hannibal.

But coffee, on his own, at the Perk? A perfect metaphor for his mental state at the moment.

The theater staff had said something cheerfully about 'playing a fun old comedy to lead in the new year', but Mitchell hadn't really been listening. After a while, they'd caught on to it: the boss's dorky demeanour was gone, replaced by something colder, and a little more alien. They decided to make themselves scarce as a result, albeit not before putting up the sign.

LADS IN LEGGINGS
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Mitchell's New Year was not. Panicked text messages in his phone predicted rather auspicious things for the next few days, at that. Not just here, but in Bristol. Fucking brilliant.

By the time Thursday came around, Mitchell had heard of all that had gone on. He figured the kids could all use some escapism at the moment, so he spoke to a few of the lads inside and they all agreed. A Space Battles marathon was clearly in order for anyone wanting to take a moment away from the island, just for the day.

And lo, the sign above the entrance changed accordingly.

There. That ought to be Mitchell's contribution to humanity for the day.

Last week had been a long, long week, first with vampires, then with teenagers. Mitchell couldn't say he wasn't a little relieved to have the respite, even if it made him antsy. He greeted all the theatre workers as he came in, smiling, and snagged some popcorn from the concessions stand.

What? It was only his due.

Then he had them put up the sign for the day--

Now Showing:
It's Not Such A Bad Life.

And indeed it wasn't, really.

Mitchell couldn't say he was entirely at ease with what he'd found out about Kate's current-- hobbies, yet, but there was only so much he could say about it. Now, several days worth of hanging in front of the telly and checking on Nina and George both had finally come to an end, and it was time to get back to work.

He felt a little restless about it all, for no reason he could pinpoint. He stuck his hands in his pockets and eyed Kate as they got off the cab and wandered onto the island. "Home sweet home," he said.

[[ mitchell's here with one, but open as a causeway is ]]

Mitchell wouldn't be able to afford staying in Fandom for much longer. A few more days until the full moon in Bristol - tonight here, but time had shifted some on its own axis, and... well, he wasn't a scientist.

The fact of the matter was that he didn't have a great deal of time left to him in Fandom. He contemplated calling Chloe, but that felt awkward somehow; she was a student, and, well. Then there was Max, but Max was Max.

At the end of it all, the Perk had seemed the best choice. It tended to be a hub for people of all stripes. If he wanted to bump into someone he know, say his last goodbyes, it was most likely here.

So he ordered a coffee and sat down, staring out the window.
