Devil's Nest, Monday

The full moon was over for the month with no more damage done to Jack than usual, and Jack had a week's distance from that other world.

He wasn't quite all right. Even someone with his impressive repression skills needed more than seven days to get over being dead. But he was feeling normal enough to hum along with the stereo as he got to work, and to make a small wager with Tiny on the women's soccer games later that day.

Jack put his money on Japan and Canada before settling in with some supplier contracts.

Because ~~his mun wanted to pay Jack's mun back for threadspamming~~ he hadn't been on the island for... a while, and his life had finally quieted down... somewhat, Mitchell had decided to check in for the next few days while he still could.

Naturally, his first destination would be the Devil's Nest - it seemed to be where everyone he knew spent their time these days.

"And here I thought I'd managed to run away from the Olympics."

"No such luck," Jack said, with a pleased, surprised smile. "But I win fifty quid if Japan pulls this one out, so I can't be too upset about Tiny's choice of entertainment."

He shut his laptop and gestured to indicate Mitchell should sit. "Wow, it's been ... a while."

Possibly not that long in actual terms, but it had been a long few months.

"Haven't had time," Mitchell muttered. Lots to do with Daisy and other affairs he was in no mood to share with George, let alone Jack. "Sorry about that. Can I get a lager?"

Jack considered pointing out he wasn't 21 yet just to be a pain, and decided Mitchell did not exactly seem to be in the mood for tweaking.

Instead, he went over and conferred with Tiny for a moment. Tiny had a whole rant about yellow cards going, but eventually poured the lager.

"Here," he said, putting it in front of Mitchell. "It's all right. Haven't exactly been texting you every 15 minutes myself. Everything okay?"

"Yeah, everything's fine," Mitchell said, and gladly accepted the pint. "Nothing's gone wrong over the past few months. In fact, nothing's really happened besides Bo stopping by every now and again."

And that wasn't something he'd complain about. Ahem.

That sounded better than Jack had expected.

"Did your girlfriend tell you she killed me?" he asked, sounding halfway amused. "I got better. Obviously."

Mitchell winced. "I should find her and talk to her about that," he said.

He could have added 'she's not my girlfriend, precisely' but, well, it was Jack. The difference didn't much matter.

"She seemed to be about as well as one would expect," Jack said thoughtfully. "I didn't know succubus was an actual thing. Her powers went ... a little skewed, the other week."

Which meant no I was not having sex with her and please do not ask.

"Anyhow, it got me out of where I was."

"Yeah, succubus is... a thing," which was all that Mitchell could say about it without oversharing kind of a lot. "Sorry. Death... isn't pleasant, even if you come back from it."

Jack shook his head. "I don't remember anything between the fight and waking up," he said. "I don't know if it's because that's what I believe, or if the universe was being kind, but ... I don't. It's just odd to think about."

Yeah, Mitchell's eyebrows were making a beeline for his hairline. "Yeah," he said, which was fairly inadequate to voice the amount of ...yeah he was feeling. "So... what happened? The island just decided to turn everyone into serial murderers?"

"I didn't serial murder anyone," Jack said, feigning offense. "The island decided to skip over to a reality, I suppose, where some mad woman, a witch, had taken over from Principal Winchester years ago. She liked locking people up in detention if they wouldn't play nicely, or if their powers were too strong and she couldn't control them. She didn't care much for lycanthropes, either."

Sour taste about that: Still in Jack's mouth.

"Anyhow," he continued, "she had somehow manipulated Bo's mind so she'd work for her -- Bo and a lot of others. There was a whole resistance movement, very cloak-and-dagger. I had been in it before graduation and I believe Kate was still with them but I don't remember her clearly. And of course at the end of the week we ... did something magical" -- he'd been dead at the time; he could be forgiven for being fuzzy on the details -- "and she was sent back to wherever evil witches go."

Hopefully, the eyebrows still had room to go a little further up?

There was a vast plain of forehead they were desperately trying to tackle, but no dice.

"...Okay," Mitchell said.

Okay seemed like a nice, safe thing to say. "Okay," he repeated. "I think I should be buying you a drink."

"You should, but I still can't have one here," Jack told him. "Though I haven't bothered Eric lately as to whether I could be an exception."

Jack didn't think Eric had looked too closely at his age when he was hired, and he considered that the preferable state of affairs.

"I'll be around for a couple of days," Mitchell said. "I'll drop by, we'll have a pint and avoid the Olympics."

"Better idea," Jack told him. "I don't think you've been to the house yet, have you? It's on Apocalypse, with Ronan, Emma and someone named Kaidan."

"New guy," Mitchell decided. "Unless it's been longer than I thought... How long has it been?"

"New teacher this session," Jack nodded. "And it's been ..."

Jack stared at the ceiling for a moment, as if it was written there. "Kate's party back in April, unless I forgot something. Christ, it shouldn't have been that long."

"I'll try and stop by more often now that things have quieted down," Mitchell promised.

Chance of that lasting any longer than the next catastrophe (and there would be a next catastrophe) were... small.

"I've even got a job these days. Despite Annie's help."

"Yeah?" Jack wasn't surprised -- jobs being the useful things to have that they were -- but he was interested. "What are you doing these days?"

"Same thing I used to be doing, except now on Barry," Mitchell said, rubbing the back of his head. "But it helps pay the rent. This is actually the first couple've days I've had off."

"Guess there aren't a lot of movie theaters to run on Barry," Jack ventured. "Are you enjoying it, even if you don't get much time off?

"It's a job cleaning up sick," Mitchell said dryly. "Think I preferred the movie theater."

Jack shrugged. "You're the one who went back to cleaning up sick," he pointed out. "Thought maybe it had some draw I can't see."

"Hospitals are nice and dark and don't turn into dictatorships overnight?"

"Bars are also nice and dark, pay off the books half the time, and ... all right. You have me on the dictatorship point."

"Fandom always provides ammo," Mitchell said, semi-cheerfully, and took another sip of his drink. "But yeah. Took some days off. I'll be here until Thursday, then I've got a connection in Ohio."

AKA he was going to go see Kate while he could.

"I'm going nowhere," Jack told him, also almost cheerful about it. "But tell your connection I said hello, and that she should come to the island more often."

Yes, Jack knew he could tell Kate that himself. It was just fun to send messages along.
