Mystery Sign Theater, Sunday

Mitchell's mood was still excellent today, thanks for asking; he was actually surveying the editing of the sign himself early that morning, a coffee in hand and his sunglasses set firmly over his eyes. He chatted a bit with the workers before heading in - encouraged one of them to replace half the letters with purple ones, in fact - and making himself comfortable in the theater.

Hey, the advantage of managing one meant you got to watch a lot of movies.

If anything had gone wrong in Fandom lately, well, he just wasn't aware of it.

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tim Laney, 14-year-old farm girl Scottie Rachel sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Rube J. "Leo" Cogless. Scottie insists on accompanying Cogless, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger Beef, who wants Laney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

Mitchell was there, yeah. Sipping his coffee, eating crisps, occasionally dipping into the theater. The good life.

Kate's mood was pretty good, too. It wasn't as excellent as some people's, but it was okay enough. She'd had a pretty good, long talk over the phone with Zach last night and everything.

(It probably also helped that she had given up on listening to the radio way over a year ago, because this morning's would've had her stabbing things down at the salle, for sure.)

She sauntered in, and flopped into a chair without much in the way of greeting. "Ooh, chips." Well, except if you counted that as one.

Mitchell, kind soul that he was, promptly shoved the half-empty bag in Kate's general direction. "Don't eat all of them," he warned. "Three years. Clock is ticking."

"Whatever," Kate snorted, reaching for the bag. "I'm doubting your theory, anyway."

"Hey, take it from someone older than you," he said. "Twenty? That's the killer."

"Hey, my aunt's like 35 and getting married," she pointed out, digging out a chip, then popping it in her mouth. "'Course she'd pregnant for another dude, but still. If she can do it, I definitely can."

"Yes, but your aunt is all kinds of mad," Mitchell slandered happily.

"Only proving my point," she replied with raised eyebrows. "Because her hubbie-to-be isn't, as far as I can tell."

"Runaway groom?" he guessed.

A beat. "Sorry, that's mean."

Yeah, that was a useless comment when Kate had already snickered down at her chips. "I don't know, might just be realistic thinking."

"Let's try and stay optimistic about your family's chances," he proposed, "Even if they seem bound for a massive crisis of soap opera-like proportions."

"I don't know, maybe the baby will have two heads," Kate shrugged, just a touch more subdued. And wry. "That'd complete it well, don't you think? Take us straight to latenight cable fare."

"'Aliens warped my baby'?"

Kate gave a quiet, dry snort. "Something like that." She ate a few more chips, then glanced idly around. "So, I think I was offered a job here, once."

On the condition that she gave up on the webcam thing, even.

"So you were," Mitchell agreed, sitting forward. "What, you interested now?"

"Well," Kate drawled, "I'm kinda jobless now, need money for my frequent portal trips, and could use any type of distraction I can get. So yeah."

[No problem at all, I hope you feel better soon!]

"Fair enough," Mitchell said, observing her critically.

Really. He should probably do a job interview, and--

Ahahaha.

"Any day in particular you want to grab the shift, or should I just make one up at the most inconvenient time possible? How are your Sunday nights?"

"You're not getting my weekends," Kate informed him, rolling her eyes like a good job applicant ought to. "I was thinking Wednesdays? That'd still leave my Thursday open for quick trips back home or whatever."

"You drive a hard bargain," said Mitchell, facetiously. "Fine. Before you bring the Fandom Students' Union down on me."

"We are not a union kind of student body, we just go straight at injustice with knives and swords," she replied flippantly. And briefly wondered whether she should mention the knife thing she'd been doing, but there was something more related to the topic at hand. "I get a say in the movies shown, right?"

I'll be out at Sealife for the better part of the morning and afternoon, but I'll be back in the evening!
