Mystery Sign Theatre, Wednesday

Kate was still largely just wanting to go home to Kansas, but at least she'd found herself a brief distraction for today. She'd first spent part of her morning persuading a couple of her coworkers into doing her bidding, and then supervised them as they updated the marquee for the day:

FREE ADMISSION IF YOUR NAME IS NATHAN
AND YOU'RE EIGHTEEN AND A DAY

They'd had to push the smaller letters pretty tight together to make it all fit on there and technically, it wasn't free so much as it was something Kate had paid for in advance, but whatever. She was pleased with the marquee and snapped a photo of it on her phone before going in and getting to work. Even if a certain Mr. Young and his possible post-birthday hangover didn't wander through this part of town today, she'd have proof of her gift of sorts.

Mystery Sign Theatre 3000 was open for business!

With her great efforts of the day done, she was mostly texting back and forth with her mother about balloons and flowers for her aunt's upcoming wedding.

And look at that, Nathan just happened to be moseying through town on this fine afternoon, wearing a light jacket to guard against rain. When he passed the theatre, he stopped and looked up at the movie selection.

"Cute," he muttered before heading inside to see if the person behind this was the one he suspected or if it was just a coincidence.

Even on Fandom it would've been a pretty random coincidence, and it was probably evident enough that it wasn't one, judging by the slightly smug smirk that spread on Kate's face behind the concessions counter as she saw him coming in.

"Aww, did you do all of this for little ole me?" Nathan wondered, ambling over. "And here I thought you were just trying to find out things about me to write about in your diary."

"I think we both know I would've asked questions that were a little more interesting if I was going to do that," Kate quipped, leaning her hands against the edge of the counter. "But yes, all this for little ole you."

"I dunno, I thought you were just having a boring day," Nathan said, coming up to lean against the front of the counter. "And really, I was just fucking pleased you didn't ask what my perfect first date was because saying 'sex against the wall of a club' just gets some extreme reactions."

"Who's Nathan?" Jack asked, as if he were in the theater every week and not in town once in a blue moon. He was ... all right. He'd enjoyed his time at the Devil's Nest and it was always reassuring to see the island still standing. But after the night before, he still wasn't sure where he stood with Emma. He supposed if he really wanted to know he could ask her.

Heaven forbid.

"And hello."

"Nathan is a vile Irishman who was a dick over Parents Weekend and still got this kind of a birthday present from me," Kate replied nonchalantly, even if she hadn't bothered to try and suppress the pleased grin that had appeared on her face at his sudden appearance. "So I guess he's a friend. Hi, Jack."

"I don't think you even remembered my birthday," Jack said, not that he actually thought Kate knew it. "He must be a good friend. Or his accent is better than mine."

Grinning back, he added, "Hi. I wanted to see Emma, and I have a few extra days in town. How's the movie business?"

"Quiet," she replied wryly, then held up the cellphone that was still in her hand. "But, for instance today I've pretty much been getting paid for texting my mom, so I can't say I'm like, actually complaining."

Mitchell: Way too preoccupied, what with only just coming back from Bristol and having to deal with the world's dumbest vampires. Gnargh.

And so the avoidance went perfectly! ...Until she realized she needed to talk to him about Hannibal. And maybe she was too used to taking her caffeinated warm beverage breaks here.

"Is there fresh coffee?" she wondered deceptively idly as she came in.

"Haven't turned it on yet," Mitchell said, distractedly. Staring at his computer screen was very important, apparently.

Kate was noticing that. She wandered over to the coffee machine to get it running, throwing a quick glance at him as she did. "Immersed in playing Farmville or something?"

"Or something," Mitchell said, shutting down some windows on his computer. "Look, how old is that boyfriend of yours?"

That... snapped Mitchell out of his wherever the hell his mind had been. "Jack!" he said, in surprise. "Hey. Sorry, didn't hear you coming in."

D'AWWW. NATHAN APPRECIATES THE GESTURE HE WILL HAFTA COME BY NOW. Also, his favorite movie might be one of my favorite movies since the bastard doesn't seem to watch telly canonically.

Hee, Kate's being too stupid to apologize, but that doesn't mean she won't do other nice things!

Also, I've never actually seen Taxi Driver. Shame on me.
