Mystery Sign Theatre 3000, Wednesday

Kate had seriously considered blowing off work today for a day in London. Somehow that hadn't happened, though. She wasn't sure why, because certainly it would have been more fun to be out in the city offending people with her short dress than being stuck at the theater.

But she supposed there was more loyalty hiding in her than she'd thought. Sigh. The marquee got updated, and she took her usual place behind the concessions counter.

She's not as twitchy as she has been for a few past shifts, but not exactly filled with glee, either.

A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague -- a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.

If he's in.

For the first time in a long, long while, Mitchell was actually here in every sense of the word. Sure, the staff were avoiding him and the big cloud of gloom he took with him, but he was actually focused on the work, and wouldn't be leaving until late.

Kate turned up by the door more towards the end of her shift. She'd had a thermos of coffee with her today of all days for no particular reason, of course. Really.

She leaned a shoulder against the doorframe with ease she didn't actually feel. "So you're really intending to start acting like you have something to do with this place, huh?"

"Might as well, if I'm going to spend more time here." Mitchell looked at her from behind his desk. He still phrased everything very carefully, like he was afraid he was going to run out of words.

"Seems to be how it works," Kate replied, noncommittally. "The staff might like that, anyway."

You know, apart from the whole cloud of gloom thing.

Blink. "You're the first one I've seen in all day."

"Yeah, because I'm the bravest of your employees," she pointed out, as if it was obvious. "You've been either absent or unhinged, lately."

"I wasn't-- unhinged," Mitchell protested. Weakly. "But thanks for checking in."

"No, you were unhinged," Kate replied, raising an eyebrow. Then she shook her head. "But, anyway, I just wanted to see if we'll maybe start getting back to some minor semblance of normality around here."

Who all were included in that 'we', she might never tell.

"No more vampires left in Bristol. Daisy's run off," Mitchell said, leaning back in his chair. "And I don't have any other disasters left to run straight into, so normality is what it's going to have to be."

"That's what they always say," Kate replied dryly. "No more vampires, no more alters... Never quite seems to work out." She wrinkled her nose and shrugged, pushing away from the doorframe. "But I guess it's the best you get."

"Because this isn't easy, Kate," he said. Though not before watching her for a long few drawn out moments. "This is something that stays with you. Fighting your nature, fighting this-- it's not simple, and every time you-- I think I have it straight, everything is normal, everything is going well, something... snaps somewhere. And you can only hope that there'll be something left to salvage when the dust settles. That's the best I get."

"I've noticed," she said, dry tone dissolving into just plain old mildness. "And I get it. Or, at least I get it better than before."

Because he'd missed a crucial weekend. He was always missing those.

"Not sure I like getting it, to be honest."

"It's not a nice thing to get," Mitchell said, running a hand through his hair. "Trust me, I wish you didn't." For the most part. This would probably be harder in some ways if she didn't.

Kate figured as much. "But, I'm still here," she said, though even she wasn't sure exactly what she was pointing out with that. "For now, anyway."

"Thanks," Mitchell said. There was... a lot in that one word. Thanks for not running off. Thanks for being here in the first place.

Thanks your sanity hasn't given out after all this time.

Kate was a Gregson. They were made of surprisingly sturdy minds and a slightly unfortunate tendency to stick by people with issues too big for anyone to handle.

Basically, Kate had no fear of splitting anymore. If none of this had done it, then nothing would. "Yeah," she shrugged. "So... I think I'm gonna go clean up the stand and... then I'm gonna go."

He nodded. Slowly. "Feel free to take anything from the stand, if you want," he said, after a moment. "Employee discount and everything."

That was lame, but... yeah.

"Lame," Kate replied, because it was, but there wasn't any harshness in her tone. She nodded in farewell and turned to go.

A step and a beat, and she turned around again. "Look, d'you wanna -- ?" But then she cut herself off, and shook her head, pushing hair behind her ear as she hesitated by the door. "Nevermind."

"Do I want to what?" Mitchell asked.

Of his hands, at first, but he was looking up by the end of it.

"Coffee," Kate replied despite herself. "I mean, to have coffee. With me. Some day."

She blinked at herself. "Wow, that sounded like a... seriously bad date request."

He laughed, and was vaguely surprised by the sound. "Yeah, it does," Mitchell agreed. "But I'd like to have coffee with you. In a non-date-like fashion."

"Good, I'm not available for dates anyway." And she was just randomly nervous or flustered or something enough to not remember to show off her ring at that very moment. "So, um. How's... Saturday, maybe? And how do you think London in the early eighteen hundreds is for coffee?"

Did they even have coffee yet?

"Probably not as good as it is for tea," Mitchell said, with a wry smile. "But I'm willing to risk it. Saturday it is, then."

Kate nodded. "Saturday. I'll probably text you about the details." There was a blink-and-you-miss-it ghost of a smile, then she turned to actually leave this time. "See ya."

Almost forgot about this. I have no concept of what day/time it is, this week.
