So, technically, the diner was opened up pretty late, because A.J. was doing stuff at the graduation brunch, but it was his last day. What was Lacey going to do? Fire him? He thought about maybe skipping it all together, but the distraction from having eventually met Annette's parents was ssumingly greatly needed.

Besides, he couldn't leave without putting one last masterpiece up on the specials board. And a fake postcard up on his shiny, pretty postcard board.

Luke's was open!

Lacey had to admit, she wasn't really sorry that the kids seemed to be gone. Sure, they'd been cute and all, but thinking about the sheer number of teenagers who'd been bestowed with future offspring kind of made her head hurt.

Plus the longer they'd stuck around, the greater her chances of being confronted with balloons.

Augh.

Luke's is open, and hopefully a lot quieter today.

Deftly avoiding too much work if he could help it, A.J. leaned on the counter of the diner with a sketchbook. He wasn't sketching, though. In fact, not much of anything was getting done on it, because what he was trying to do was come up with a list of things he could scrap or sell after graduation for a little extra cash, but he was realizing that he had practically nothing of value.

Maybe he'd just have to be extra nice to customers this week and next to milk as much out of tips as he could.

Today's special looked a lot like a motorboard hat flying through the air and shooting lasers. No, A.J. still didn't know all that much about last year's graduation.

In addition to the usual special that A.J. had when there was a weekend and there were children, his own or his classmates turned into children, either way, really, there was another one:

TODAY'S SPECIALS
PB&J with the crusts cut off

And a free milkshake to anyone under the age of 10!

No, he hadn't exactly checked with the Boss about whether or not that was okay, but, if Lacey did have an issue with it, he would be more than happy to reimburse her for them. It was worth it, because the whole point of the free milkshakes was that he intended to have a lot of extra milkshakes. He'd brought Aimee with him, to spend a good chuck of the day helping her dad at work before her mom came to pick her up to go shopping, and he was teaching her the Art of Milkshake.

Which, apparently, he already had, and Aimee was a pretty damn good little milkshake maker, but they were still having fun relearning.

Not far from where the Skeleton Tea had been held earlier in the day, there was a tent that had been erected, with thiny, gauzy material and bone-like poles. Not dirty. The lights were soft as the evening grew darker, casting a welcoming, yet vaguely spooky illumination on the proceedings.

The proceedings of PROM.

One side of the tent was open, backing against a grove of trees; there were a few lights among them, but for the most part they offered shadowy nooks for anyone who wished to be a bit apart from the main action. The rest of the tent was enclosed, save for the entrance, and the same skeletons who'd worked the Tea earlier were at the refreshments table, ready and willing to serve any students or chaperones who approached. At one end of the table was the ballot box for prom court voting.

The music was just getting started, and the dance floor was yet to fill up, but regardless, Fandom High Prom 2008 was underway!

The special on the board today was an elaborate sketching of somewhere underground, a cave of sorts, glistening with the fine sheen of something covered in what looked like ice. On a closer look, one might see that the forms covered in ice appeared to be flames, and there was the small devilish figure, handsome in a long-tailed smoking jacket that went along with the fact that he was smoking, among them.

You see, the special of the day matched with the fact that A.J. was actually studying for his exam coming up.

Hell had frozen over.

And Luke's was open!

When Annette got to work, she sat in a chair behind the counter after she set out the bell with a note that read:

I'm right here. There is no sense in ringing the bell. Unless you just want to ring the bell. Then ring it only once omigod.

What?

So there she was, sitting, and writing... more like doodling in a notebook, but she was there to help anyone if they needed helping.

Probably.

There was an actual special on the specials board today, but it was definitely not because A.J. was lacking any usual creative drive. In fact, his creative drive was just fine, in overdrive as he sketched through a notebook instead of doing any work. There was just a special on the specials board because he didn't want to waste this artistic inspiration on something as underappreciated as his specials boards.

Today's Special: Mushroom Burgers with Swiss and french fries.

Of which A.J. was going to have about four of throughout the day.

Lacey was back at it again with the paint chips and the catalogs (though the financial stuff was nowhere in sight today). Only today, she was wandering about, thoughtfully holding up the paint chips against the walls for long periods of time.

She was quite possibly nowhere closer to narrowing things down than she had been yesterday.

There were Nanaimo bars in the dessert case again, and every napkin dispenser had been polished within an inch of its life.

Luke's is open. Much more meticulously cared for than under the previous management, but nope, still not remodeling just yet.
[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com
A.J. was in a good mood today, which meant that A.J. was busy drawing up a storm in his sketchbook. Most of the work, however, was turning out to be ideas on the redecoration of the diner, to propose to Lacey hopefully soon. He hoped that she had a lot more drive and ambition than some one like he had, otherwise, by the time she got around to vamping the place up, he'll have graduated and be off to Boston for art school, and then they both lose.

Today's special looked like a redone version of A.J.'s reinactment of the settling of America. He was feeling patriotic. And hungry for turkey.

Luke's is open.

It was going to be one of those days where A.J. was going to go through a lot of coffee, which was interesting because a good deal of the time was spent just staring into a much as he leaned on the counter and tried to think about things.

For as out of it as he was, though, he still managed to spend a good chunk of time working on creating a very well-done Escher-esque set of stairs and bars for the specials board.

Tonight was finally the night. Everything was perfect, and, while perfect wasn't quite good enough for Charlotte, she figured it would just have to do. The gallery quietly seemed to glisten with its newness, its modernity, large opened spaces and smaller, quieter nooks and alcoves. Covered the walls on large, bright canvases were the works of Satoshi Matsuyama, colorful, exotic landscapes in a style as lush as their subjects. Smaller pieces by the artist also peppered the area on smaller canvases and, in a small section flanked by curtains, there sat a spread of hors devours and a fountain of punch, which was likely to be spiked probably three seconds into it, thus negating Charlotte's choice to not serve champagne as she normally would at an opening, considering the youthfulness of her current audience.

The York Gallery was open!

Coming into work today and finding out by the helpful spatula throwers that were the kitchen boys that Yitzhak was gone was a little bittersweet; he really loved that guy, y'know, even if they never talked. Well, the boss never talked anyway, but that wasn't what A.J. meant. Besides, he left for A.J. a box of stuff. How could he have not been totally psyched for a box of stuff? Stuff he'd probably never ever use except in the most abstract of projects, but stuff was stuff, and A.J. liked his stuff, and he probably wouldn't look too bad in that pink sparkly wig.

Not that he was going to bother trying.

The specials board, however, was decked out to the nines, in a tribute to glam that A.J. thought would do Yitzhak proud.

A.J. didn't sleep in and end up a little late for work today, really. Honest. But, either way, he was there, and he drew what looked like a duck with a monocle and an umbrella on the specials board, and really hoped that no one asked. He had no idea.

Rubbing the back of his neck, A.J. came into work today feeling like he was in a bit of a fog of thought. As soon as he set up the specials board (an artful splotch of pinkish red, edged by orange), he settled behind the counter with a sketchbook and a pencil, hoping to draw himself out of the fog, and hoping for a calm day.

Not that things ever got too exciting in the diner, anyway, but he wanted to at least be able to sort out exactly what to think about what happened with Annette yesterday.

A.J. was thinking that there was a decent chance that, hey, maybe kids wouldn't really want to bother with a diner. Hopefully. But he was psyching himself up to make lots and lots of little milkshakes just in case, and even made an actual special today instead of just drawing something obscure and abstract: PB&J with the crusts cut off and a glass of chocolate milk. He could even make that one himself!

A.J. came into work today with a bit of a nervous energy, mostly out of hoping that it would be overlooked that he ducked out of work on Sunday for the rather impromptu trip home for the holiday. Either way, he was doing a good job of cleaning up in an effort to make up for hte indiscretion.

Today's special was a picture of a pig without legs, but tentacles instead: Squid Pork.

Annette was situated behind the counter busily making a paperclip chain. Currently it was long enough to hang over the counter and drag on the floor below where Angel was swatting at it with her paws.

"Careful, Angel, you're going to get your claws cau--"

Mrrrrreeeeoooooow!

Annettte smirked. "Told you so."

There was much hopping and flailing about before Angel got her claws free and took off running towards the back of the post office.

Humming lightly, Annette continued with her chain, a little smirk settling about her mouth.

The post office was open.

Tom was a little cheerier than he had been upon coming to work today. He'd finally found a use for the copious amounts of leftover ham from the Scavo family Easter dinner, and Lynette had been back to her usual self last night.

Bowls of chocolate eggs sat on each table and at the counter, free for customers to take.

Today's Specials:
Omelette Pizza

Piggy Pizza- Pizza with ham, bacon, and pork sausage

A.J. was not late. He was simply...off the path of regular arrival. That's all. He couldn't help it that last week through everything through a loop, or that his alarm clock just happened to not turn on again after the snooze went off, right? Right.

Blinking in bleary still tiredness, A.J. very quickly set to the task of seeing if he could hook up something where he could just get coffee flowing into him at all times as he worked, after setting up a specials board that looked like one of those Magic Eye puzzles. As far as A.J. knew, there wasn't actually a hidden image in the colors. He just wanted to see how long it took people to stare at it, and how many people would just make up what they saw, like an inkblot test.

A.J. was feeling a little...discombobulated. The type of feeling that there was something going on around him that was completely slipping under his notice as he passed through his life as usual without surprisingly tripping right over it.

So, in other words, he was feeling mostly how he usually felt every other day of his life. So he continued getting kicked out of the kitchen, making things out of napkins and Post-It notes, and putting up visual specials.

Today's looked something like a dolphin with a wizard's hat on, and that was kind of stretching it.

A.J. might not have been in the best of moods today for his shift at the diner, but there was a bright side. Two, actually. He didn't have that stupid rabbit anymore, and any brooding that he might have had was actually being nicely balanced with the annoyance he was feeling, so it kept him from getting too maudlin.

Today's special was rabbit stew simply out of a cruel streak.

While A.J. had kind of missed working counter jockey at the diner, he definitely pretty much missed Mexico more. He did, however, have a ton of sketches from the trip that needed to be refined, and so he was pretty much set with things to keep him occupied today.

Oh, when he wasn't working, that is, of course.

Today's special looked like something that might have been a magical leoplurodon. With a mohawk.

This was a rare sight: A.J., behind the counter, with his nose stuck in an honest-to-God actual book. The kind you didn't draw in. The kind you couldn't draw in, because it was a library book. It was also a book about mechanics and gears and such, so, therefor, it was a rare one that he actually found interesting.

Today's Special looked like a flock of seagulls. The birds, not the band. You'd have to look at it upside down to get the band.

Beauty was at the counter today, but deeply immersed in a copy of Candide. If someone could get her attention, she'd be happy to assist them.

The design on the specials board today was a little darker than usual today, with lots of streaks of blues and purples. A.J. felt it was reflective of his mood, which wasn't very good in the slightest, thoughtful and annoyed. He tried working on some concept designs for his project to distract himself, but they weren't going very well. Things like the pencil lead breaking or soup spilling all over his sketchbook kept happening, so eventually, he just gave up, threw the sketchbook across the dinner in a fit, and then just spent the rest of the time sulking.

Luke's is open.
[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com
Ah, well. It had to happen eventually, right? Back to the real word after a oh-so-handwavily romantically successful and high-cuddle infused Valentine's Past Few Days. The kitchen boys were starting to get annoyed with A.J. spending so much time in the kitchen but he got so lonely up there by himself behind the counter.

But, after he attempted to help with making a pie to disastrous results (the kind that seemed almost inexplicable if you tried to think of the hows and whys), he resolutely just returned to his station and settled his boredom with lots and lots of sketching.

The special's board was rather geometric, today, of various different sized squares spread around it, some fitting into other, intercrossing, like a sharply disturbed and distorted checkerboard.

A.J. was feeling a whole lot of stress. Stress over his project for class. Stress over the upcoming Valentine's Day. Stress over the whole things with Annette. Stress, stress, stress. It sucked. So A.J. was sulking. A lot. At least he knew that he could do sulking well.

Today's special looked like just a continuing spiral of overlapping and slightly chaotic colors.

Annette dragged herself into work. She was wearing her bunny slippers. It didn't matter, she was going to be comfortable, dangit.

She set out the bell with a note that read: The Post Lady is busy. Ring bell once for service. But only once! Or... else!!  She also set out a big bowl of Red Hots. That should keep customers busy and happy so they won't bug her to death.

Pulling up a chair behind the counter, she curled up in it with the blanket she brought with her and closed her eyes.

What? She'd totally be working if someone came in.

The Post Office is open.

[ETA: Annette left work after A.J.'s visit, so if you come by, please note in the subject line that it is before his visit. Also, Annette's and A.J.'s conversation is NFB.]

A.J. was a bit more with it and awares than he had been during his previous shifts, but that didn't necessarily prevent him from not doing much else besides sketching out more possible (and likely to fail) invention ideas in his sketchbook. He'd occasionally take a small break from the sketching and counter jockeying to try to plow through a little more of that book.

...Very little.

Today's special appeared to be a cubist rendering of the Leaning Tower of Pizza. It was a pun!

A.J. was thoughtful today. He felt that he had a lot to think about, even though there were, really, only two things. But it felt like a lot. So much so that he was so thoughtful that he kept just spacing out and forgetting to do things, among which included the specials board for today and occasionally inspired one of the kitchen boys to throw a spatula at him to make sure he was still alive. Gingerly rubbing the back of his head where a spatula-shaped welt was coming up, A.J. grumped slightly behind the counter, waiting for a customer to come in, whose order he'd probably screw up today. Unless you were one of those two things.

Sipping a large coffee, Annette sat behind the counter, lost in her own thoughts. The post office was open and ready for any customers; Annette just wished she was in a better mood to receive them.

A.J. was having one of those incredibly productive days that consisted pretty much of him sitting there, working on something like cleaning before he completely spaced out. And then his brain would come around to Hey, I've got a girlfriend now, and then it would continue with not only a girlfriend, but one of the most perfect girlfriends ever, which lead to just grinning stupidly, dorkily, until he finally realized he was supposed to be working and the whole process would start all over again.

So, there they were. The rescheduling of the date that was actually even confirmed as a date and not just something hanging there in ambiguity. A.J. even held the door open for Beauty as they arrived at Fast Eddie's, although he probably would have done something like that, anyway. "So what do you think?" he asked her as they moved in. "Bowling, video games, or something to eat first?"

The cold was mostly gone, but Beauty was still feeling a little on the tired side, especially after spending the whole day out with Greatheart the day before. So although she had a book open on the counter in front of her, she was mostly leaning with her chin on her hand, staring at a spot on the floor where the light came in the window.

Although he was still kind of bummed over the oh so handwavey cancellation of his date (which, in lieu of not happening had gone from being kind of like a date to definitely a date) this weekend, A.J. discovered at least one benefit to Beauty having gotten handwavey sick. He could now proudly add chicken noodle soup to his repertoire of things he could make well, having made some for her all weekend. He figured it was cause for minor celebration, like actually have a special today.

No blonde hair, no guitar, no boobs; A.J. was very glad to say that these were all true. Yes, even the last one. Unfortunately, he could add 'no excuse' to his list, as well, because he somehow didn't think that Yitzhak would be entirely convinced with his excuse on why he wasn't at work on Sunday. However, part of him was also thinking Yitzhak wouldn't care. His special for the day, however, was very reflective of the entire experience:

D'Argo was so far oblivious to any weirdness that was overtaking the town this weekend, and happily so. He was just going to set up the bar, and considering what he went through last week at this time, make Tino do the work. He felt a little owed for having to work through that, see.

[Yeah so I think tonight's gonna be a mod Tino night as the AU'ed characters are totally getting the attention omg.]

Despite the light drizzle and the occasional snow flake heavy with moisture, Andrew bundled up and made his way to the junkyard.

He started poking through some random piles while he waited for A.J. to show, and he quickly became occupied with trying to free what looked like a discarded tandem bicycle from underneath a jumble of scrap metal.

After doing something somewhat akin of actually studying for a good chunk of the day yesterday (you know, the chunks of it that weren't braiding long, pretty pink hair), A.J. was feeling pretty industrious and confident in himself. He resolved, coming into the diner, getting some coffee started, and opening up, that he was going to help cook today.

It lasted about fifteen minutes.

And it mostly explained why, between helping customers, A.J. appeared to be busy trying to fix a slightly smoking toaster.

Another Sunday, another shift at Luke's with A.J. practically locked to his sketchbook, desperately trying to think of something to fill in the vacancy of ideas for his inventing class. Yesterday's weather had worried Willow, but according to the weather report Saturday was warmer and so far snow-free.

Ahhh, another day, another milkshake. Another diner shift with more time spent on a sketchbook than on customer's. Such was life.

At least it was homework that A.J. was doodling, though. Okay, so no ideas for his invention had manifested yet and what he was sketching certainly didn't seem to look like inventions, but he was totally brainstorming. Getting the juices going. That was it, yeah.

There were a lot of reasons A.J. was more subdued than usual when he came into work today, up to and including a major caffeine crash from having too much yesterday, the kind that had him giving the coffee machine dirty looks every time he passed it. It was the kind of day that A.J. felt like he really didn't want to be here for once, and so he was spending almost all his time with his sketchbook instead of bothering with stuff like cleaning the counter or putting more napkins in the napkin holders.

Ino showed up before Kabuto. Which was hardly a surprise because she always showed up to things before he did. So, with a roll of her eyes, she got a hot chocolate from the staff and settled in to wait for him.

At ten minutes of waiting, she was starting to get seriously annoyed.

By twenty she'd finished her hot chocolate and gotten another, because knowing her luck she'd just get up to leave and he'd show up.

After thirty minutes of waiting, Ino was just sitting in her seat and seething. She was going to kill him the next time she saw him. Standing her up was seriously not cool.

Ringing in the new year had been a quiet exercise for Beauty, who'd suddenly backed out from going to the party at the last minute (a case of unexpected nerves). Now, as she set herself up behind the counter at the post office with her writing supplies and the beginning of a letter home, she was feeling pensive, thinking about all the strange things that had happened to her in the past year, and wondering what the new one would be bringing.

She wasn't one for making resolutions, but she did promise herself to approach the coming year with an open mind and a sense of adventure.
