Luke's Diner; Sunday [ 04/27 ]

In addition to the usual special that A.J. had when there was a weekend and there were children, his own or his classmates turned into children, either way, really, there was another one:

TODAY'S SPECIALS
PB&J with the crusts cut off

And a free milkshake to anyone under the age of 10!

No, he hadn't exactly checked with the Boss about whether or not that was okay, but, if Lacey did have an issue with it, he would be more than happy to reimburse her for them. It was worth it, because the whole point of the free milkshakes was that he intended to have a lot of extra milkshakes. He'd brought Aimee with him, to spend a good chuck of the day helping her dad at work before her mom came to pick her up to go shopping, and he was teaching her the Art of Milkshake.

Which, apparently, he already had, and Aimee was a pretty damn good little milkshake maker, but they were still having fun relearning.

Luke's is open!

But not because her mother taught her, that's for sure.

Aimee, as it was, was sitting cross-legged on top of the counter, near her daddy, promising him that she would be careful and sit still. "Daddy? I want a pink and chocolate layered milkshake."

She gave him a look. "I can just do it myself," Aimee said. "You can just stand over there and watch, 'kay?"

"All crusts?" Faith asked when she came in. Billy was just behind her. "How else will I know where to hold the sandwich?"

Aimee happened to hear that remark and she snorted. "No one likes crusts."

"Of course not. But the crust is the handle. That's where I hold the sandwich."

"It's not the handle," Aimee, because she was super-duper smart, said in a grown-up tone. "You cut it and then pick up the pieces and just pop them in your mouth."

There was a delighted squeal from outside that might have sounded like "Shake!" and then Michael found himself dragged in by the hand.

Small girls were surprisingly strong.

"Yeah, she's mine", Michael said, lifting her onto a stool. "Well, she showed up at my room yesterday calling me Daddy, anyway. And yeah, she definitely wants the special."

Late in the afternoon, Annette showed up to pick up Aimee for their shopping date. Her eyes found A.J. first, however, and she smiled as she sat down at the counter. "How's things going?"

"Hi, mommy! We did, we made lots and lots and I'm even clean mostly!"

"You look beautiful, Aimee. Are you ready?" she asked, smiling at the little girl.

Lacey had spent Saturday off-island, driving countless home improvement store clerks crazy with questions, so she'd missed out on the child invasion. Still, she'd thought it might be a good idea to swing by the diner and see how things were going on Prom weekend, and the specials board definitely caught her eye.

And then she stepped inside.

"Whoa, A.J., is there something you forgot to tell me?"

"Uh huh. Boy, you work quick," Lacey said, taking a good look at Aimee. "This isn't gonna get us into any child labor trouble, is it?"
