Luke's Diner; Wednesday [ 02/06 ]

A.J. was thoughtful today. He felt that he had a lot to think about, even though there were, really, only two things. But it felt like a lot. So much so that he was so thoughtful that he kept just spacing out and forgetting to do things, among which included the specials board for today and occasionally inspired one of the kitchen boys to throw a spatula at him to make sure he was still alive. Gingerly rubbing the back of his head where a spatula-shaped welt was coming up, A.J. grumped slightly behind the counter, waiting for a customer to come in, whose order he'd probably screw up today. Unless you were one of those two things.

Luke's is open.

Annette's Wednesday's were now going to be centered around milkshakes.

That being said, she was somewhat ill from eating a whole box of chocolates last night. By herself. Obviously.

"Hey, A.J.," she said, lifting her hand in a sort of floppy wave as she sat down at the counter. "Can I have a... plain milkshake? Wait, no, a vanilla one... um, crap... no just give me the chocolate. Yeah. It's my favorite."

A.J. didn't catch half of that; he was slow to start at the sound of a voice, instantly brought his hand to the back of his head in defense, and then realized that Annette was there. He blinked. "Chocolate milkshake?" he asked, partially to reconfirm. "No problem."

She frowned. Something was up. Okay, yes, she was confusing but so? That wasn't what was wrong with him, she was sure.

"Hm?" A.J. blinked up from getting the ice cream scoop. "Wrong? N-nothing." He frowned. "Does it seem like something is?"

"Yeah, you seem kind of out of it?" Now that she thought about it, he seemed kind of put out about something when she first walked in.

"Oh, yeah..." A.J. sighed a little, shaking his head as he continued working on the shake. "Just distracted a lot today, y'know? One of those days. Damn jerks in the back keep throwing things at me, too, which doesn't help. Clearly, they're just jealous. Of what, I have no idea, but definitely jealousy."

"What? Those asses!" Annette leaned way over the counter and raised her fist, looking towards the back. "Hey! You jerks back there! Knock it off and quit throwing things before I come back there and... do something really bad to you!"

Sitting back down, she looked back at A.J. "What has your mind all distracted like?"

A.J. winced at the yelling. Yeah. Like that didn't just earn him a whole whopping increase in the throwing once Annette left or anything. He bit his lip.

"Just stuff," he answered, lamely, and then, surprisingly clever for how he was today, went to blend Annette's milkshake to stave off an immediate answer.

All right. Something was just totally wrong here.

Annette stared at him, watching him blend her milkshake. She could wait to talk to him after he was finished. No big deal. Unless he took forever omigod.

An expert milkshake maker did not take forever omigod, thank you very much. Without any excess waiting, A.J. had a milkshake ready and in front of Annette, sitting on top of the usual napkin underneath. "There you go. Anything else, are just in for the shake today?"

"Thank you," she said, her eyes never leaving his face. "Just the milkshake; I fear it's all my stomache might be able to handle. Now, I want just a moment of your time please? A.J.? Tell me what is wrong and what has you lost in thought?"

Andrew walked in and took a seat at the counter. Then he just kind of grinned goofily at the boy behind the counter.

A.J. seemed unaware that there was someone at the counter, it seemed, for a moment until a plastic spork from one of the kitchen to the back of his head brought him around. Sporks, so far, had been meaning Customer, you idiot. A.J. rubbed the back of his head ruefully and brought himself around.

"Oh. Hey, Andrew, what's up?"

"I need to buy a Valentine's Day gift," he said without hesitation. "I need advice. I thought of you." He nodded.

"You have the romantic hair and all," he clarified.

"W...what?" A.J. blinked, his expression one of rather palpable confusion. Like Andrew was talking a different language at first, before familiar words started to manifest. Romantic...hair...he ducked his head so that a few strands fell forward into his eyes and he looked at them as if to verify this observation. Advice, Valentine's Day...

...oh, shit, that was coming up wasn't it? And he actually had a girlfriend now so that would...

"What in the heck makes you I'd be any good at that sort of advice?" He looked slightly panicked, on the verge of a flail.

"You're just so, you know..." Andrew waved his hands about. "... suave and stuff." He was apparently oblivious to A.J.'s panicked state, as he was in his own little cocoon of bliss and awe.

"And creative! Don't forget how creative you are," he said, pointing. "I think creativity counts for a lot."

A.J. was sort of looking at Andrew like he'd sprouted a second head before, cautiously, asking, "Is there....some other guy who looks like me, but apparently acts...nothing like me, walking around with my hair and claiming to be me or something?"

"Not that I know of," Andrew replied, actually thinking it over. "Have you seen one? I mean, that's not exactly unheard of around here, right?"

"Well, exactly my point," A.J. explained. "It's not unheard of at all, but, since everyone seems to think I'm ever remotely romantically inclined, I just figured maybe there were actually two of me and I had no idea."

"If I find another one of you wondering about, I'll let you know," he said. "I would want to know if there was another one of me on the island. Who knows what they might say to people?

"But, anyway, I've never had to buy a Valentine's Day gift for someone before. Like, ever. So it has to be really, really good. And I care for this person a lot, so it needs to make that statement."

Andrew looked at A.J., waiting for his wisdom to come.

There was a nice bit of uncomfortable silence as A.J. just looked back at Andrew as Andrew looked at him.

"I'm sorry," he finally said, "I'm still confused as to how you think I can think of anything to help you with here. You do realize that you're talking to a guy whose current relationship was established in a stable hayloft, right, and he couldn't even do it, Beauty had to ask..."

Andrew sighed, a dreamy gleam to his eyes. "Hayloft? That is sooooo sweet. See, why don't I ever think of going to the hayloft..."

He frowned at his apparent lack of inventiveness.
