Luke's Diner; Sunday [ 01/06 ]

There were a lot of reasons A.J. was more subdued than usual when he came into work today, up to and including a major caffeine crash from having too much yesterday, the kind that had him giving the coffee machine dirty looks every time he passed it. It was the kind of day that A.J. felt like he really didn't want to be here for once, and so he was spending almost all his time with his sketchbook instead of bothering with stuff like cleaning the counter or putting more napkins in the napkin holders.

Beauty wasn't sure she was glad to have listened to last night's radio or broadcast or not.

She was sure where she was going to be spending her afternoon. After a ~~handwavy~~ stop at the general store, she walked through the door of the diner, pulled up a stool at the counter, and laid a paper bag containing several pads of post-it notes in front of her.

"I would have brought you a milkshake," she said softly. "But I don't know how to make them."

A.J. smiled lightly as he kept his head down to finish a few lines in his notebook, glad that the voice he heard matched up with who he figured had just come into the diner. "Wouldn't have been as good as mine, anyway," he commented, idly, finishing up a curve before he set down his pencil. He tilted his head at the bag before pulling it in closer. "What did you bring, then?"

"No, they wouldn't be," Beauty agreed, watching A.J. work. At his question, she pushed the bag toward him.

"Next best thing to milkshakes. The only other thing I could think of was flowers, and I thought you'd like these better."

"...Flowers for what?" A.J. asked, his forehead frowning in confusion before he stood up a little too look into the bag.

"Whoa, Post-Its!" He chuckled a little. "Awesome! Thanks, Beauty, I haven't done Post-It work in a while!"

"To cheer you up."

Beauty was frowning now, afraid that she'd misunderstood what she'd heard over the radio. And boy wouldn't that be embarrassing? She decided she was glad she hadn't said anything specific about why she was worried over A.J.

His reaction did draw out a small smile. "You were working on a post-it mural first time we met," she reminded him.

"Oh," A.J. said, head still tilted. He was a little confused as to how Beauty might have known he needed cheering up, before he remembered that they'd probably said something on radio about his talk with Troy last night. His face slowly spread into a light, pink glow. "Oh..."

He bit his lip. "I was; it's still in my room, remember? I'll have to start a new one with this, huh?"

Beauty nodded. "You've got it on your wall, I remember. Maybe...I could help a little with it, if you started another one. You can put it in my room if you want."

Adah might not approve of this plan, but Beauty figured she'd just have to deal with that if it came up.

"Maybe," A.J. said, a little quietly but with a small smile. "We'll have to plan it around the current painting, though, 'cause I wouldn't want to disturb the aesthetics of that. I still think it's some of my best work."

"Oh no! I don't want to disturb it either. Maybe on the closet door, or something. Or maybe they'd let us do it in one of the common rooms. And share it with everyone."

Beauty had an overwhelming urge to hug A.J., and her hand crept across the counter to his.

"Common room could work," A.J. said and, noticing Beauty's hand creeping his way, he lightly moved his hand to wrap his fingers around hers and give her a small, though lightly strained smile. "Then other people could contribute, too. You know how I like to make stuff like that all...communal and stuff."

"Then lets do that. Put it in the common room, and get people to add pieces whenever they feel like it. Sort of like your wall murals at your old school, only without the expulsion."

Beauty squeezed A.J.'s hand tightly, and gave him a little smile. "You'll never guess what class I signed up for this term."
