It was the Monday after graduation, and Arthur's nerves were hitting an all-time high.

Not that he'd admit it.

They were packed and ready: Arthur had his dog and his horses, Merlin had his owl. Several bags strapped to each of the horses, enough food for the trip home, if they wound up anywhere near where he and Merlin had gotten thrown off course the first time around.

Arthur didn't give the castle as much as a passing glance. But he had put out a few messages to anyone who might care to see him leave, and advised Morgana and Merlin to do the same.

Today, they would try to go home -- and dammit, they would succeed. He couldn't think anything less if he was going to take this path.

Today, Support was back at its old stomping grounds, but just outside the picnic shelters, on the grass. Blankets had been laid out for lounging, and a variety of sammiches, sodas, and crunchy snacks were available at one of the picnic tables.

Against one post of the shelter, a portable movie screen had been set up for easy viewing by regular Support members or anybody who wanted to wander by and have a seat.

"We know you guys are all getting ready for Finals Week," said Francine, fiddling with the lid on a can of Pringles. "So we thought we'd go with something light that can still give us stuff to think about in terms of being the backup team: A Wendy The Werewolf Stalker marathon! Wendy kicks almost -- but not quite -- as much butt as Bitterwoman, but she doesn't do it alone. She can always count on her friends the Blankies for comfort, security, and random buttkicking assists. So sit down, grab some snacks, and keep an eye on the stuff that other people take care of for Wendy.

Especially the hot English bookstore owner." Pause. Cough. "For research purposes, people!"

As nice as the weather was, Morgana was hoping that the heat wouldn't damage the cake that Francine had made. Of course, if anything started happening to the frosting, she supposed they could simply eat more of it faster. Oh, what a shame that would be, really.

"This week, Francine and I wanted to take a chance to thank all of you for your efforts last week. Whether it was fighting, or researching, or even simply making sure people had masks when they left the dorms, everyone did a wonderful job in keeping others safe, and we wanted you to know that it didn't go unnoticed, and that we appreciate everything you all did. Therefore, you all get cake. Enjoy!" She certainly would be, once everyone else had taken a piece.
[identity profile] nevertobequeen.livejournal.com
Now this was weather the girls could get used to. It was sunny and warm but not too hot, and that meant everything was perfect for today's meeting.

"We have a little something special planned for today," Morgana said, once it looked like everyone had arrived. "Sometimes, when it comes to being supportive, the people we have to help the most are ourselves. Dinah is here today to show us one example of how we can do that."

Since the weather was in fact halfway decent (if looking a bit like rain in the near future), the meeting had been moved back to the picnic shelters at the park, and Francine and probably OMG Morgana could be found surrounded by... er. Scones. Also coffee and J,GoB-provided doughnuts, but the scones were homemade. Just, um. Something Francine had to try.

"I know you guys who hop around to all the meetings have seen this before on Tuesday," Francine said, "because the fighters were talking about what to do if someone you know turns into somebody else who causes trouble: how do you stop them without hurting your friend. What we should look at, though, is what can we do in advance to make things as easy as possible on ourselves and everybody else when we wake up as somebody -- or something -- else? Leave ourselves messages? Make sure our friends know stuff to tell whoever we end up being? Hide things we don't want someone else in our body finding? Let's talk about that."

There was a boy fidgeting with his button up shirt right in front of Pizza Planet. It kept him from worrying if maybe he should have gone with the Outback Steakhouse. The Mexican sounded cool too, but he didn't know if Morgana liked spicey and if there was one food that represented this time, it should be pizza. Even if steak was yummy and filling.

He moved on to making sure his hair wasn't sticking in all directions a moment later when the fidgeting reminded him that he really should have brought some more fancy clothes. Not that the black shirt on the jeans didn't work, but this was the most fancy he'd got and maybe he should have gone to do some clothes shopping. Ugh, he hated clothes shopping.

And hopefully Morgana wouldn't be much longer, or he'd start wondering if he should have gotten his hair cut. (Not that there was much to cut.)

[For the date, obviously, but Pizza Planet is always open for your pizza needs. OMG, I'm hungry.]

"Good afternoon," Arthur began, scraping his throat aloud, "And welcome to this meeting of the military reserves. Glad you could join us here down at the Rocky Bits. Today, we will abandon talk of theory and see about how well you all work out in practice. The Rocky Bits are one of the most troubling of physical challenges on the island, but sometimes there may be a need to hide in them, or cross over them. Today, we will explore the best ways to do so."

"There's plenty to keep an eye open for, here," Zack shared, his hands on his hips and looking as chipper as ever. "Cracks in the stones that you might never see coming, sudden drops, and things like that. If you aren't familiar with the area yet, then be sure to go slow and to pay attention to where your feet are going."

Zack was not one to follow his own advice, in this regard.

"As per usual, you are allowed to form teams of two, even three," Arthur continued, "If simply to make sure that if anyone gets injured, they make it back. Watch your step. Normally, it would be best to go around the rocks, but I think we've all learned that normally doesn't apply in this place."

"There are some nifty drop-offs over that way," Zack shared, leaning forward conspiratorially. "I mean, if you're comfortable with the relatively flat terrain and you want a bit more of a challenge. But you guys have to be extra careful if you do head over there, okay?"

"Zack will have potions," Arthur added, dryly. "If you fail."

"So!" Zack clapped his hands once, pleased as punch with the activity for today, and well-stocked on potions, yes. "What are you guys waiting for? There are rocks to explore!"

During the night, Fandom had been covered in a blanket of fresh snow that was just thick enough to turn everything crisp and white. With cream-colored decorations and twinkling lights, the Student Council had aimed for a winter wonderland kind of theme, and the snow simply added to the effect. Thankfully, the day was turning out to be warmer, so those who were going to be outside all day wouldn't freeze. Once the finishing touches were done, the carnival was open for business.

Having had her fun with the gremlins yesterday, Morgana had agreed to set up the Support Services station today, in case anyone needed first aid or supplies. It felt a little strange to be working out of Caritas of all places, but a safe spot was a safe spot so she wasn't going to complain.

Yes, there was an E in there again - it was getting chilly outside and Morgana had a feeling that after the past week, chocolate and whipped cream-laden drinks might help everyone's moods.

"If there is a lesson to be taken away from the last week, it's that sometimes the people our friends need to be rescued from the most is themselves," Morgana started, doing her best not to look at Arthur if he was there. "Whether it is a gremlin bite or the island affecting people, sometimes our friends go mad, and nothing can cure them but simply waiting for the effect to wear off. The problem is, if we leave people to fend for themselves, they could, in the best case, do something terribly embarrassing or, in the worst case, hurt themselves, and possibly others in the process. The question we have today is: how can we best keep our friends safe when they're out of their minds? Is it all right to lock someone in their room? To bind them to their bed if necessary?" Now she really wasn't looking at Arthur. "Should we get consent about these things beforehand, or can it be assumed that if someone comes to their senses and finds themselves bound and protected, they will forgive those who caught them for saving them from potential trouble?"

Karla walked, yes walked, into the Church. God, it felt so GOOD to be free from those annoying and painful braces, free to finally move around with grace and freedom. It was a miracle, an honest and true miracle, that had freed her from the dreaded injuries that had made her unable to walk unaided.

And, like a good girl, she'd come to thank her savior. Now he just had to show up.

The church was somehow dimly lit, even though it was a bright day outside; the lit candles around the altar filling the church with an eerie and kind of gloomy glow. Karla stood mostly in shadow, the gold of her hair and alabaster of her skin contrasting with the darkness of the leather catsuit that clung to her perfectly muscled and fit form.

She had made a deal in order to be freed from her condition. And now it was time to live up to it.

Honestly? Karla couldn't wait to start.

Francine had sent out an e-mail of handwavey to the members after Ethics yesterday, and called ahead to the Perk to make sure there was room to accommodate the group.

Now she could be found at the table nearest the door, a bottle in one hand and a cup of hot chocolate in the other, droid-baby hanging out in the sling around her shoulders. "Hey, guys. Since it's getting a little cold out there for a baby, even a fake robot one, we figured we should move this someplace warmer. Since some of us were up at four o'clock in the morning, someplace warmer has coffee."

"So it seems that we had a bit of a vegetable problem this week," Morgana said, snickering a bit at the memory. Hindsight had a way of making things seem much less frightening. "The lesson here, we believe, is that even the most innocent objects on the island could be turned into weapons or enemies if we are not watchful. Perhaps it might be a good idea to think of other things that seem innocent, but that could turn deadly? Is there anything we can do to prepare ourselves for strange and unexpected attacks? Besides helping others be armed at all times, at least.

"Everybody seemed to be into writing advice for people on the bathroom walls this week," Francine said with the most innocent look you could possibly see -- and a gold earring with a star dangling from it in each ear.

"And the warning signs went over well too, so we thought it might be a good idea to keep going on that theme and come up with a brochure to hand out to new students when they arrive, telling them the things they really need to know! We know the administration wants to keep us safe, but sometimes they miss out on the small stuff - and sometimes the small stuff isn't really small at all."

As people arrived to the tables in the picnic area, they might have noticed that in addition to the usual snacks and drinks, there were markers, colored pencils, and pieces of paper waiting to be used.

"Good afternoon," Morgana said, once everyone had gotten settled. "We've all given a great deal of thought to potential Fandom-specific issues - what to do when you wake up a different gender, how to deal with friends being turned into animals, etc. - and while that means that we are well-prepared, we thought that perhaps it would useful to try to ensure that others are at least thinking about these things as well. What we would like to do today is make safety posters for Fandom, to hang up in the dorms and perhaps in the town as well." She hadn't known what Francine was talking about at first, but once she'd seen a few, she found them rather helpfully amusing. "I believe we have enough supplies for everyone, whenever you all would like to begin."

Francine didn't have classes on Friday, which meant she had all morning to bake. This time it was stuff she could just layer out in a pan and cut up, though, so the food table was covered with lemon squares, rice krispy treats, and raspberry-oatmeal bars.

She might still have been licking marshmallow off her fingers when it came time to climb up on a non-food table and say, "I bet you're tired of hearing 'I see you survived your relatives visiting!' If only because duh, since you're not dead."

"You might have spent the weekend trying to hide all the wacky that is Fandom from them, or getting them used to it or just--" Cough. "Working up the courage to tell them, but at least they didn't have to find out the hard way, by something trying to take over the island or eat us all in our sleep while they were here."

"We've been lucky about that, but we can't count on staying lucky. What if something big and bad happened while our parents were here, or even worse, our kids? Um. Our possible future kids for anybody who wasn't here this spring. We should have plans in place to deal with keeping the really n00bish defenseless people safe while the other folks are off fighting the bad guys."

"Today, we thought we'd practice teamwork and communication with a game. Francine, looking slightly annoyed as she perched on the table and crumbled bits of Apple Brown Betty in her fingers? Neverrrr.

"So Professor Skywalker brought up something in ethics that I think can apply to us," she said, standing up and brushing off her shorts. "He said heroes need people like us to stop them from being idiots. More or less. We can probably expand that to 'everybody needs their friends to stop them from being idiots at some point.'"

"If you're not from the here and now you may not have heard of this, but we've got this thing called a Designated Driver. When people go out to drink together, one of them volunteers to stay sober so there'll be somebody to get them home safe. I think we can try to be that for each other when it comes to stuff that happens on the island.

"We may not be able to designate somebody in advance to ...not be a dumbass, but we can at least think about what to do when that happens, right? Sooner or later we're all gonna have to be have to be the one to convince our drunk, stupid, bleeding, gremlin-bitten friend that streaking or going back into the battle or challenging Principal Zoe to a shootout is the Not The Best Idea Ever."

Today's Very Special Edition of Fight Club was being brought to you by two things; Ghanima was running late so Tyler was in charge on his own, and Anakin had offered a dare.

Figuring he might not get the chance again, Tyler had quickly curtained off a segment of the gym area and set a few things up behind it. "Hi," he said laconically. "I'm back, and Ghanima will be here a little later. Before the fighting, I wanted to talk to you about the next phase of fight club."

He was not catching Anakin's eye if he was there for this. He'd laugh if he did.

"In Phase 2, we start trying to look good while we fight. Neat hair, nice workout clothes, manicured nails. if you're ready for that, go behind the curtain and get ready. Don't forget the hair gel."

"If you aren't ready, stay out here and fight. I won't judge. I think it's time for a match for ... you and you, wizard-boy and blondie, you, you, you and definitely you. Go for it."

The calls had started early in the morning, and the patients had followed shortly after, all with the same problem - people had fallen asleep and couldn't be woken up. It didn't take long for it to become clear that the clinic wouldn't hold everyone - there really were a finite number of rooms in the place - and in quite possibly the only instance of anyone ever being grateful for the plague, it wasn't long before Martha, the nurses, and the town hall staff had figured out how to recreate the emergency clinic in the town hall. Cots were set up, supplies were brought over, and the rest of the clinic staff had been contacted. Tyler's body was tight. He wasn't pulling off pep today. "I know some of you have heard about a conflict last week," he said. "If you haven't, ask the person next to you. Since Francine was still with her family, Morgana was by herself at the picnic tables today when everyone started to arrive.

"Good afternoon," she said in greeting. "I believe we can all agree that we would like to be prepared for whatever dangerous situations this place might choose to throw at us. We've done well in readying ourselves so far, but the problem remains that we cannot always know what to expect. I thought perhaps we could take our time today to talk about some of the things we've already gone through?" she suggested. Francine's posters were back up at the picnic tables, in case anyone had forgotten where the meeting should be, and by all appearances, Morgana looked to be in a very good mood. Pretending that yesterday never happened had to make it true, didn't it?

"One of the most important aspects of any good group is teamwork," she said, once everyone had settled down. "None of us are as good alone as we are together, which means that we need to make certain that we can communicate with each other. Sometimes, verbal communication can be difficult. You might be stuck somewhere in hiding where you have to stay quiet. Or you might be in a situation where if you speak, you'll begin singing embarrassing songs." Horribly, terribly embarrassing songs. "We've got a game of sorts for everyone to play today where non-verbal communication is the key." She had a feeling that at least some people wouldn't mind doing something silent.

"Good afternoon. It's nice to see all of you again," Morgana said, once everyone had arrived and gotten settled. "It seems that the game of choice this week is hide and seek, as those of you who are in the other groups are aware, and we think the game's skills might apply to our group as well. When you're coming to the aid of a fighter, you can't always wait for them to return home looking to be bandaged. Sometimes, you can't even wait for the battle to be over, as dangerous as that might be. Since we're not looking to put anyone in harm's way, we figured that a more entertaining scenario might be better."

If she was grinning a bit wickedly, it couldn't be helped. "We'd like everyone to split into three groups. Group one will be our "fighters" - you all get to find hiding places somewhere in the woods. Group two will be our rescuers - you get to try to find our fighters, so they can be tended to. As for group three, you're the enemy. Everyone is going to be armed," she said, pointing to the pile of water guns Francine had procured for the afternoon. "Group three, your job is to try to stop the others from finding anyone. Put them in the line of fire and try not to get wet yourselves."

The incredibly girly posters had been handwavey said to meet a little earlier this time, but Francine had a reason for that. When people got to the main picnic shelter, they'd find all the tables covered today. With food. Some of it was open and obviously for nomming on right away, but most of it was small, pre-packaged items, or things one could easily shove into a small package.

Francine sat up on one of the tables near the front, looking a little less nervous than she had for the last couple of meetings. This stuff, she knew, and didn't feel like an idiot trying to tell other people about.

"One of the things we can do to help out is to make sure the people who are out there defending us have something to eat - and us too. It may not seem like a huge deal, but if you're wearing yourself out fighting or throwing energy bolts at something, you need to re-fuel - and it's the same thing if you're staying up til four in the morning in the library, trying to find a cure or break a spell. If we have food ready, it's one less thing that everybody else doesn't have to think about." She smiled and picked up a small bag of cookies. "And it's just nice to know somebody cares, too, you know? Food's comforting, and it's a reminder that we're all trying to help each other, when you need that little extra push to get through."

"We've got lists of all the members of the Fighting and Magic Reserves here, so we're gonna try two things at once today: get used to putting stuff like this together, and get to know the people on the other teams. Everybody gets to pack a lunch, and then try to go find somebody in one of the Reserves to give it to! Not that they're meeting as groups today, but think of it like a scavenger hunt: you get an extra bag of cookies next week if you managed feed a reservist." She paused, then added, "Or, you know, anybody who looks hungry."

[OOC: Bridgey gets no free cookies; for her, there's a toll. The rest of you may play, for OCD is up!]

Morgana still wasn't entirely certain what CPR was, even after Francine had tried to explain it to her, but she supposed that was the point of the meeting this week. They'd taken over the same picnic shelter, to make themselves nice and easy to find in case the extra posters didn't do the trick, and had tried to make sure there was enough space cleared for the demonstration.

If they ended up with more boys today than they'd had last week, there'd be no complaining. Probably.

The largest picnic shelter at the park was decorated with a couple of the incredibly girly posters that had been going up around town, just in case people might think they should go to... any of the other shelters that didn't have any people in them. Because Francine was thorough that way, and also because she sometimes judged others by things she would expect herself to get caught doing.

The picnic table nearest the barbecue grills had a sign-in sheet on it, alongside a first aid kit, a couple of notebooks, and two cell-phones.
