There was more than a touch of bittersweetness to Annie's set-up tonight, as she pulled out her garnish tray and prepped her blender for the last time. Granted, it was the kind of bittersweetness she'd probably mostly process after the fact, once she and Diego and the twins were squared away and she could think easily again.

But there were also benefits to trying to focus on roughly fifteen logistical things at once: the drink specials came really easy.

Annie's phone was blowing up when she came in tonight, because guess what, kids -- it wasn't just a pre-election summer in this world, and Annie had friends back home who had a vested interest in who made it to the White House in their own.

And, of course, they wanted her help with all of that.

(For the record, MM also did not believe her when she had told him the recent Presidential track record in this universe, because some things were just too silly even for him to believe.)

In any case, once Kimiko started in with the animated Starlight gifs to go along with MM's patient requests, a decision was reached, and her phone was turned off. Look -- if Diego needed her, it was a very small island, and he could just bring the kids in, okay? Better that than spend the rest of her shift wrestling with a decision she'd made two years ago and stuck to.

That being said.

When Annie dashed into the bar tonight, she was actually still running a hand through her still-drying hair, and was covered from shirt to knees in drying water.

"I lost track of time," she told Tiny, waving dismissively at him as she snagged a handful of napkins and started blotting her clothes while considering her specials board.

At a further askance look, she elaborated: "We got some toys for the kids to play with in water."

And seven month-olds were not, typically, known for taking great pains to keep their gamely-playing parents from getting wet, too.

It was so humid. Spring in Maryland appeared to be, mostly, a myth, and a way for summer to sneak in early.

(If Tiny could read narrative, he would have hated that.)

And given that it was already unbearably humid even though it was only May -- though, thank heaven for small favors, Annie was not pregnant this summer and could not be more thrilled -- it was time to start doing her specials on easy mode:

It was remarkably quiet in the bar tonight. The speakers were playing music, but it had clearly had the volume lowered significantly, and keen observers would notice that Tiny, perhaps, looked intermittently more irritated than usual -- and then, occasionally, maybe a little abruptly fond, like he'd caught sight of something cute and hadn't expected it.

Annie, meanwhile, had conspicuously not listed any blender drinks up on her specials board, and kept darting glances behind the bar as she hung it up.

~*Specials*~

And once the board was mounted and Annie was back behind the bar, almost as if on cue, there came a soft fussing from the little carrier she'd brought Maggie in. And that was why everything Annie had put up on the board could be made with one hand if she had to, since it looked like she'd be holding her for awhile until she calmed back down enough to maybe snooze for the last half of the shift, at least. Considering how much Ben had been wailing when they'd left, sleep didn't seem a definite prospect once they were home, either.

The joys of parenthood.

When Annie came in today, she was hit with a wave of citrus. And while normally she took to the garnishes upon arrival, she could already see Tiny was working on them, and could also see why/

"So who ordered them?" Annie wondered, writing up her specials board. "Like, this is like all that scotch nonsense last year, remember that? Like, do we need a new distributor?" Or could they blame someone specific for this? (Like you, Tiny?)

And once she was done writing that up, there was...a reversal, of sorts, as Tiny brought over his phone to show her his child from the weekend. "What do you mean, where was I last week?" Annie asked, rolling her eyes at Tiny as she started setting up her garnishes. "Where do you think?"

Though, with two babies, coordination had been trickier than pollen weeks past. That would probably only get easier when they were able to, like, walk this time next year.

"And like, really, why do you care about last week specifically?" Annie continued, mostly addressing her orange slices. "I miss work all the time, asking about last week just seems kind of intrusive."

And, because Tiny was already annoyed enough of this to give her a wide berth and head to the back to maintain the kegs as he so often did on Thursdays, there was no one to correct Annie and tell her he had actually said, "It was quiet last week."

"Okay," he said after blinking a couple of times. "Apparently I'm supposed to go now."

Looking around he saw a familiar duffel bag and a cursory examination showed that it was packed with most of his possessions. Another check of his pockets was his wallet with cash and a credit card that Charlie had set up for him and Sam ages ago.

And of course there was a set of car keys which just made him smile.

At first, she was tempted to decry that as an absolutely ridiculous thing to bet on, but then she got to realizing that you had about a fifty/fifty chance of a payout, so you know what? Sure. She'd put 50 down on the weird little rodent not having an identity crisis just because he saw his shadow, which somehow then translated into a determination of the weather.

Later, when she was looking over the results out of curiosity while Tino went to use the bathroom, she just had to blink and stare at the one vote outside of the expected sees his shadow/doesn't see his shadow margins.

Well, the ballroom was once again done up for a grand get-together with a distinctly winter and holidays theme: trees and greenery and candles and (non-sentient) ribbons on things. Because Tony didn't know how to not go overboard, there was one massively oversized tree and a brand new chandelier over the dance floor to continue with a wintry feel.

The trees were covering the normal rotation of wall art that kids sent to the Avengers, but the smaller trees around the ballroom had handmade ornaments sent from around the world and contained at least two depictions of Thor flying Santa around using his hammer. Because it was the holidays! Everyone wanted Thor to fly them around for the holidays, right?

There was holiday music in a variety of languages playing over the entirely too complicated sound system when the gremlin choir that Steve, at least, didn't remember inviting wasn't singing on the stage. The food was catered and abundant (though missing jelly doughnuts. After yesterday, Tony and Steve had declared themselves doughnuted out, however temporarily), your hosts were suitably attired, and there wasn't a bathtub filled with hooch to be found anywhere.

Welcome to the holiday party, everyone! Enjoy yourselves.

Marzipan was a much more substantial treat than powdered sugar, which was excellent from a snacking perspective, but less so for walking around and getting pelted, as Liliana had discovered on her trek from MHA to the Perk. Still, necessity was the mother of invention and before she was halfway to the coffeeshop, she'd already been sending instructions to her steward about what she needed.

She'd just settled in with a cup of hot caramel apple cider when her steward arrived and handed over her requested items: one of her umbrellas, a sturdy needle, and some thick thread, almost twine. The third item she needed, disposable cups, were not something she had at the mansion, but was also something the coffeeshop had in spades. With a smile and some soft words of appreciation, she accepted the elements of her craft project and immediately set to work, sipping on her cider and humming snatches of the song she'd woken up singing on Saturday.

Annie was feeling a touch bittersweet as she opened up the bar and wrote up her specials board tonight. It was a little weird -- and, if she let herself dwell, more than a little nerve-wracking -- to think how long she'd be gone from this place after tonight, and that when she returned, the (very active, thanks kids) twins currently stomping all over her internal organs would actually be little babies at home with their dad.

"Aww, Tiny, you shouldn't have!" Annie exclaimed, upon spying that he was carving two little pumpkins that, to Annie's eye, looked almost identical, but not quite. Definitely like related siblings, though, right? Like little twin pumpkins?

Right?

It would be forever a mystery whether Annie was delusional, or whether Tiny was, possibly for the first time ever, using his art to do something nice for her. (Not much of a mystery, really, when it was put like that.)

In the grand tradition of not rudely interrupting plans for parties and picnics, any rain that may or may not have been in the forecast seemed to have been holding off or at least avoiding the island until later that night, when all festivities were over, and could you blame it? Even weather patterns thought it wise not to incur the wrath of Summer Smith with an event on hand.

But, of course, there was no doubt that a section of the beach had been set up for such a party. In fact, it was set up for the baby shower of the year. Sure, it started in the afternoon, but, expecting it to go on a bit into the night, lights had been strung up around the designated party area, in the shape of stars, of course.

Underneath the scattering of pale, pastel beach umbrellas in muted tones of blue, pink, and yellow, were low tables surrounded by soft cushions for sitting, as well as a few taller tables for those who'd prefer standing, as well as beach chairs and blankets, too.

Of course, the theme translated into some seashell motifs scattered here and there, and especially on the food and gift tables, but the real focus of the set-up would be the large canopy which the parents themselves would sit, each with a beachy throne to sit in, and, for the mother-to-be especially, there was a nice little basin of cold water for her too keep her feet in, as well as several little portable AC units to help keep the space cooler.

But still, Summer had also hired over some of the waiters from that cat cafe that serves only pancakes staffed entirely by shirtless hunky dudes to also be shirtless here and walk around with palm fronds to help keep people cool, and also coming around with trays of drinks and snacks.

What? You're welcome?

You know where Annie would rather be? In her kiddie pool in her backyard, which was where she'd been spending a lot of time lately. There had even come an afternoon, recently, when she'd added ice cubes to her water, and it had been so awesome. Like, the kiddie pool was so fucking great that she might keep this going once the babies were born!

(Wait. No. That seemed like such a hazard for the babies, once they were here. Scratch that.)

Anyway, Annie was having a real pregnant-lady-in-her-kiddie-pool kinda summer, though she was also being offered a couple of reprieves: tomorrow's shower, which she was actually looking quite a bit forward to, and the subsequent don't-call-it-a-babymoon trip the following couple weeks after.

And then...you know, probably not a lot of travel. Probably an increasingly limited amount of going out even in town, as summer wound down -- because once they were back from that trip, Annie would be in her third trimester, and apparently that was pretty much open season for giving birth prematurely with twins.

It felt weird to say Annie was feeling good this week, in the wake of Alex's visit. It had been hard in so many ways, seeing him again (and getting to apologize, and getting told she had nothing to apologize for, repeatedly), but it had also given her a sense of peace that she'd been missing since that night in August last year. Her faith was still...tricky, or at least the practices of her religion still felt a little distant and like something she didn't need anymore, but it helped so much to know that where Alex was now, he was happy. That was all she'd ever really wanted to believe in, anyway, when you got down to it -- that souls kept going, that your actions on Earth mattered, and that it wasn't all just for nothing.

So anyway, it was a fairly thoughtful Annie who made her way behind the bar tonight, distracted to the point that she was all settled in before she even realized she hadn't come up with a theme for the specials. So. Noctis was back, apparently, and the thing he wanted to do now that he was here and reunited with his chocobros was...

....go fishing.

Of course he wanted to go fishing, and, of course, how could any of them deny him that? The dude sacrificed himself to save the entire world. If he wanted to go fishing, they were going fishing.

That didn't mean they couldn't complain about it the whole time, though; in fact, them complaining about fishing was part of the whole fishing experience.

"It's far too late in the day already to get many bites, I'm afraid," Ignis observed softly.

"Maybe if someone didn't decide to just waste most of the morning sleeping in," Gladio snorted wryly.

"Come on, guys, coming back from the dead is probably pretty exhausting!" Prompto argued lightly.

"Maybe I'm not getting any bite because some people won't stop talking and are scaring all the fish away," Noctis pointed out.

"Nah," said Gladio, "they probably just got a look at that face."

But they were quiet after that, because this was all weird and surreal and it had been ever since he showed up at Gladio and Ignis' apartment last night, and there'd been plenty of time for catching up then, and a lot of really tangled up emotions that none of them had really figured out how to process just yet. So honestly, even if it was too late to be effective, even if their familiar quips and jabs or their ugly mugs were frightening the fish, it wasn't really about the fishing, anyway. It was sort of just about being there, together again, almost (almost) feeling whole.

"...you seriously named your kid after me, huh? Man, you really are bad at naming things, aren't you?"

"Don't think just because you're dead I won't push you into the water, dude."

...yeah. This...this was almost perfect, right about here.

(Almost).

[[ post is definitely open if you want to crash some chocobro fishing or just use the cove and lake for any of your own devices! ]]

Annie still had that song stuck in her head that she'd woken up with yesterday, because last night's dream about Alex had been even more vivid than Tuesday's.

"I first saw you in my study hall, that's right," she sang under her breath as she got set up today, making herself a virgin margarita to kick things off.

But there was no accounting for taste, clearly, because while some people might find it funny to have the words, "I wanna love you just like Brad loves Jen; Like Megan Fox, you're my perfect ten," sung to them with what Annie felt was sort of hilariously intense boy-band eye contact -- millions of teenage girls had loved that, like, ten years ago, you know -- Tiny was weirdly not one of them.

Whatever, his loss. 'Rock My Kiss' continued to be a (bizarrely, heavily dated) bop.

Space spa had gone presumably very well, and, despite the fact that Summer wound up with some pretty weird dreams last night ("Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV...") and an insatiable urge to go out and actually touch grass (well, stones, but whatever), she was still feelings it and thinking a lot about how much she loved that goddamn space spa.

Also, everyone would be relieved to know that Tino did not get the apparent memo that occasionally circulated between Caritas and Turtle & Canary that day about what day it was. It was the little things, you know? Or rather, in the case, the lack of little things on Tino right now. In fact, he was dressed so normally, it could almost be supsicious.

Look. Summer didn't technically have proof that there was any sort of behind-the-scenes socialization going on between Tino, Tiny, and Apu, but it did seem a little suspicious, didn't it, if you started to put a few things together, that when she came into the bar that day, she was to find Tino all decked out in a sexy lumberjack get-up, complete with booty shorts, of course.

"I know you want me to," Summer informed him pointedly as she started to get set up for the evening, "but you know I am absolutely not asking. But I will say that I see you eying that pole in the back room, and so, just so we're crystal clear, I am veto'ing that shit right now."

She could already see that spark of rebellion in his eyes, though, so Summer just hoped it was a good busy day tonight so that he couldn't just slip away to the back and traumatize her further.

Annie had arrived at Caritas much, much earlier than she usually did on Wednesday – so early, in fact, that Tino had initially tried to shoo her out before Annie had instead shoved an armload of pink birthday decorations at him and told him to make himself useful.

And thus, by the time Caritas approached its normal opening time, the bar had been fairly covered – haphazardly in spots, and tackily over the top – in pink fringe, pink birthday balloons, a truly silly amount of pink glitter scattered around (thankfully, they still had that vacuum), and a banner draped above the bar.

The specials were a little different from what most people were probably used to, too.

Steve had let Tony do the decorating for the party tonight, so there was no chance at all that anyone walking through town wouldn't see that there was a party at the renovated Stark…Mini Tower? Tallish Building?

There was a red carpet (because that's what all of the galas Tony and Steve were invited to had) on the sidewalk outside that led to the open glass doors, through the renovated shop area (with a sign pointing out that the new second floor maker space would be available to anyone in the mood to invent whose name wasn't Beaker), and to the elevator that would take them to the third floor ballroom.

Because, much to Steve's chagrin, they had a ballroom that took up almost an entire floor. Enormous windows filled the room with light from outside and offered a pretty view of the castle. The walls were decorated with enlarged, professionally matted and framed drawings of the Avengers that kids had sent to them over the years (and a Jackson Pollock Tony was trying to pass off as a picture of Wanda and Scott made by a small child. Steve was letting him get away with it).

There was a stage across from the windows with space for Steph's DJ equipment (and also room for the small-ish non-zombie orchestra for when Steph took breaks. The stage had looked much smaller on the blueprints when Steve had approved them.) and the dance floor was spread out before it. A Chihuly glass sculpture hung over it in Iron Man colors of gold and red. (Tony was Tony.)

Silent waitstaff were passing moddable high-end appetizers, but because Steve could spend his entire night eating passed appetizers and still be hungry, there was more substantial food just off to the side of the dance floor.

The room--and the couple welcoming you--was a mixture of the practical, the beautiful, and the casual misunderstanding of just what things cost. Welcome to the new Stark…Towerlet? Was that a thing? Steve and Tony were so glad you came.

"No, that's not acceptable," Annie was saying into the phone as she wrote up her specials board, blowing out a sigh of frustration. "Would it be possible to talk to your supervisor?"

A pause as she listened to the other end of the line, followed by, "The owner, then. Someone else."

Another pause.

"Look, this just isn't right. You guys didn't deliver half our stock this week, and keep putting us off, and then today -- "

She glanced up from her writing, closing her eyes against the headache that the stacks of crates of fucking butterscotch schnapps were giving her.

"We got the wrong product. The mistake wasn't corrected. Do you understand?"

Another patient, long pause -- apparently Annie's actual breaking point.

"Look, man, you people need to either get the fucking scotch you owe us here by the end of my shift, or I'm coming down there to get it myself. And I'm pregnant. Do you want to deal with me in person?"

He evidently did not, and Annie was assured that if it did not arrive by the end of the evening, the shipment of scotch in question would be the distributor's first stop in the morning, and she supposed that was all she could really ask for. Though, like, damn. Between ragequitting Vought last year and the hormones she had now, Annie apparently gained a couple levels in Karen.

When Gladio got in early that morning to open the place up, one of the staff members was getting in their own workout before the usual Tuesday rushes started. Which was fine. It was great, actually, Gladio loved to see that initiative, but there was just....one problem.

The weight machine they were using....was squeaking.

"What--" Concerned, and hoping he wasn't going to have to deal with a lot of obnoxious equipment stuff today, Gladio went over to have a closer look and ask why it was squeaking, and the staff member didn't know and explained that they were all like that right now, and so naturally, Gladio shoo'd them off the equipment to go work free weights or something instead while he looked into it.

And that was when he discovered the rubber chicken. Expertly, cleverly tucked into the equipment for max squeakability.

Gladio moved to the next piece of equipment to discover the same thing, another chicken, and a very strong realization of what had happened here.

"Dammit! Prompto!"

And now to find out just how many machines had been rubber chickened, but, hey, at least it'd be easy to tell if someone started using one, and, maybe, just maybe, in retrospect, Gladio would have to agree that it was kind of funny.

Atlas is open! And squeaky!

Inspired a little by his trip to the bar last night, there were a ton of Cup NoodlesTM readily available for the taking for the employees in the back staff area, as a thank you for all their hard work and not being weird and not stealing things, although if they were making off with much of the equipment around here, Gladio wouldn't even be mad, he'd just be impressed.

Anyone here to work out instead of just work, though, would still have to use the claw machine. Sorry.

Well, maybe unless you asked nicely.

Either way, Gladio was focusing on that and letting most of the employees on staff today take it a little easy, while he focused on checking around the gym for the little stuff on how things were running or holding up and making any notes for things to look into or keep an eye on.

Summer had been dealing with a little bit of a jello crisis earlier that day (do not> ask), so, by the time she was ready to come into her shift for the evening (crisis, thankfully, resolved, jello shots fine and lovely and undisturbed), she was just relieved to see that Tino was having a normal day and she didn't have to deal with any weird beverage experiments on his behalf or any silly string or other such weirdness.

That was, of course, her thoughts before going into the back room at some point and noticing that the entire area was completely filled with pool noodles.

When she returned to behind the bar, Tino was looking at her expectantly, eagerly, but she knew better to engage in something like that. She was firmly ignoring having seen anything, much to his disappointment, and he kept trying to think of reasons to send her by the back room again, as if maybe she'd just missed the dozens of pool noodles, and that's why she hadn't said anything.

The poster in the lobby had been updated with a new motivational image that Gladio could only highly approve of, so well done to whichever of the staff picked this latest one out.

There was, however, one small adjustment Gladio was going to make, so, after some time in the office to put it together, he had added a little something extra to the bottom:

"HUNGRY: GO TO THE GYM"

Which also included a red arrow at the bottom pointing helpfully toward the new Cup NoodleTM claw machine game among the protein bar and energy drink vending machines. You know. In case anyone managed to somehow miss that it was a thing now.

"Excuse me?"

Tiny repeated his question, and Annie had not, in fact, misheard him, it turned out.

She surveyed the...cards made out of carrots and eggplant that he was offering, frowned thoughtfully, and held up a finger while she finished writing the specials board out.

And with that done, it wasn't that much longer until Annie had a hand of cards, herself.

"Go fish."

Annie walked into the Devil's Nest tonight, and stopped in her tracks, frowning.

And then took a deep sniff, walking through the bar like she was letting her nose lead her.

"Do you smell --" she started to ask Tiny, feeling silly until she took another deep sniff, and said to hell with it. "Do you smell, like, pineapple and hot dogs?"

Tiny, of course, only smelled the pineapple -- and a hint of coconut, too, Annie was getting that now, too -- but then again, Tiny (and everyone else on this island, unless someone was hiding something well) did not have a fifteen week-pregnant nose, did he?
