It was a decent fall day, not too cold and, for the moment, not too wet either. Those Fandomites headed for Canada met up on the causeway, where soon they'd be taking their Portalocity jaunt to Newfoundland. With any luck, they wouldn't have too many strange connections, either.

But that was a thing for very soon, and gathering up - large piles of luggage and all - was for now. Those leaving had been warned to take work clothes as well as vacation clothes. And to pack warm, of course: this wasn't Hawaii they were headed to this time.

"I can do this. I am in control of my destiny. I am a capable and intelligent human being. I will help defeat the powers of darkness. I am doing the right thing..."

Andrew stood at the end of the causeway, reciting the same list of mantras over and over, desperately trying to convince himself that he wasn't making the biggest mistake of his life. He had phoned his aunt in Sunnydale this morning to let her know he was coming home. Her response had been to deny knowledge of his existence and then she hung up the phone.

His phone call to Jonathan had gone much better. His only friend back home was more than happy that he was coming back, and Andrew was relieved to have a place to stay. Jonathan was apparently out on his own now, sharing an apartment with some guy named Warren -- sounded like the perfect bachelor pad.

"I am doing the right thing," he said again with a glance at his watch. The taxi should be there soon.

Magic Box, Wednesday

Andrew opened the store early and spent most of his time walking around, touching certain objects and laughing at the memories they brought up - real or imagined.

He still wasn't sure who the new owner was, so he placed his letter of resignation in the cash drawer, sure it would be found.

He would miss this place.

The Magic Box was open!

[ooc: SP for travel/New Years-ness. This is Andrew's last work post!]

Andrew eyed the boxes he need to unpack and inventory, and decided to ignore them. Today felt very much like a do-nothing day.

He could use a cup of hot chocolate, a fireplace, and good book on summoning. Specifically, he was getting interested in demons with the power to produce euphoric scents. It was a potential goldmine waiting to be tapped. That, and selling duct tape coffee cozies on ebay.

Andrew was fairly certain the walk to work had lowered his core body temperature to a dangerous level. To raise it back up, he would occasionally pause in his store duties and jog in place.

Andrew pulled a towel out of his bag and spread it out over the damp grass before sitting down. It was cold and threatening to rain, but he had two grape Squishies and a stack of comics he hadn't had a chance to read yet.

For a while, he just sat there and looked towards the water, his breathing syncing up with the undulating surf. It was peaceful, slow.

He lightly tapped his Squishy to the one sitting next to him, and took a sip. "Well, little man, it's been a long year," he said. "I hope things are more exciting where you are."

He took one more sip and then picked up the latest Ratguy. "You're going to love this one. Ratguy is having an identity crisis, yet again. I mean, seriously, when is he going to realize the the Tricker is just acting out because of all his repressed feelings? Sparrow would be so jealous if he ever wised up."

He began to read the comics aloud, not caring that they were getting wet. Some things were more important.

[ooc: establishy, but it is outdoors if you think your character might happen by or be looking for Andrew. SP likely.]

Andrew stood by the front door and looked out the window. It was a gray day, cold, and he was regretting having only worn a light jacket. Still, it seemed somewhat fitting for the week.

Try as he might, he couldn't stop thinking about what had happened on this island a year ago. He should be thankful to be healthy, glad that most of his friends had made it through that week alive. Most...

Even though he usually missed the nearly perfect weather back in Sunnydale, Andrew had to admit that Fall was rapidly becoming his favorite season. He propped open the front door to the shop and set about doing a bit of cleaning, softly singing various show tunes as he went.

The walk from the dorms to the restaurant was uneventful. Tony and Andrew got a table near a window and the waiter gave them menus.

"Should we get an appetizer?" Tony asked Andrew.

There was a large signboard in front of Atlas Gym proclaiming the evening's event:

Students, townies, and teachers alike could cuddle up on a raft or a noodle in the heated, Olympic-sized pool or the bubbly jacuzzi and watch Duke and Hanno save Princess Leanna from the evil Dark Helmet.

Just because he had nothing to do on Sunday mornings anymore didn't mean that he slept any later. His body was used to an early wake up and by the Nameless Name, that was what he got. As such, not much in the mood to clatter around in the kitchen and disturb anyone else's rest, Liir made his way to the Park with his ball. A bit of flour down and the two plastic tubs on the grass gave him a good practice yard which he put to use with great pleasure.

Not that he would mind anyone joining in...

This wasn't right.  Someone had done something to the store.

Andrew stood in the middle of the shop and gawked.  It looked like a rogue Disney designer had had his or her way with the Magic Box.

"This is totally awesome," he said.  "I think I hate it."  He really wasn't sure.

The past few weeks of work were finally coming to a head, and Charlotte was both nervous and excited and getting herself worked up into a frenzy with making sure everything was perfect. She couldn't help feeling an overwhelming sense of satisfaction with the exhibit, though. The turnout wasn't huge, but nicely manageable and thankfully not small by any measure. Some of the work was a bit amateurish, but she had to admit to being pretty blown away by a few of the others.

By the time eight o'clock rolled around and the doors were open, the gallery was set up in a display of the pieces by artist, and the usual spread of treats and drinks were available in another area of the room. Charlotte, dressed in a vibrant red, milled around the gallery to make sure everything was in order and all the guests were enjoying the exhibit. She was also keeping an eye out for the artists of certain pieces, since she was very eager to potentially meet them.

Andrew had stopped and gotten a large hot chocolate on his way to work.  Sure, it still wasn't perfect hot chocolate weather, but there was a slight crispness to the air this morning that had made him want it.

He propped the front door open and pulled a chair up to sit next to it, just inside the shop.  Rearranging the frogspawn jelly could wait.

Andrew took some time and reworked the display of scented candles, moving the more popular scents to the far end of the shelf so customers would consider the other ones first. Then he made up a little sign to tout the benefits of slug scented candles:

Why Slug?

Because you dare to be different!
Because you really don't have a good sense of smell but you like the fleshy color!

Alex was relieved to be back in Fandom. Sure, she'd treasured the time she got to spend with her family during the last half of summer (not that she was telling them that!), but she'd missed this place. A lot.

Andrew was over an hour late getting to work, and this after having left nearly half an hour early. If he hadn't recently watched The Heavy Mist, he would have been fine, but that wasn't the case. No, this morning, every time Andrew had bumped into something, which was frequently, he ran screaming in the other direction, convinced a ghostly pirate thing was about to run him through with a rusty cutlass.

Sometimes having a healthy imagination was just a nuisance.

Now safely at the store, he was making his best attempt to not look out the windows, certain that if he did, random and unexplained things would leer at him through the thick fog.

Geoffrey was not a religious man.

That said, Geoffrey was a play director who'd had quite a few things go wrong last performance. As such, he didn't so much pray that things would go better tonight as stare up beyond the ceiling every few minutes during his preparations to silently ask 'what're you going to be throwing my way today, oh Lord?' He probably should have been a bit more of a supplicant as opposed to the equivalent of an irritated librarian, but Geoffrey's never been one for patience during a run.

Well... no matter what, the show would go on.

Andrew had always wanted to go to Australia. He pulled a chair just outside the shop door and sat down so he could breathe in the fresh air and daydream about being able to leave the island and explore.

Now would be the ideal time to pull out the didgeridoo. If only he hadn't lost it in Hell. Maybe he could get someone to pick him up a new one while they were here.

Being that Mr. Giles was away, Andrew decided to take the day and do a few managerial tasks. He pulled out a couple of large, dusty books from under the counter and plopped them down with a thunk. Upon opening the first one, Andrew was confronted with columns of numbers and dollar amounts. He frowned. The last entry was dated clear back in April.

"Time to cook the books," he mummbled, grabbing a pencil and setting about his task. He had no clue what he was doing.

Having found himself being followed and serenaded by a particularly amorous rat, Andrew was steering clear of the store windows today, opting to sit against the wall behind the counter. He really hoped the rat was drunk, and that he didn't actually resemble a "tender blond young maiden, whose eyes were wide yet sad."

He was also not considering the next line: "But if her legs would part for me, she'd be forever glad."

Andrew had a lot on his mind. It was good being out of his room, but he wasn't enjoying it nearly as much as he thought he would.

He had the front door of the shop open, and he was standing there, contemplating the crisp edge in the breeze, the sidewalk in front of the store, life, the universe, and one lost didgeridoo.

"Hey hey!" Hades appeared near the hole between Fandom and Tartarus. It used to be a barrier, and technically it still was, but he was starting to like to think of it as a hole. It was only a matter of time before it was a clear path between the two places and then he would set everything on fire and whoever was left on the island would burn. The whole thing sounded like a great deal to Hades. After all, he'd given them a chance or three and they hadn't taken it, so once everything was in working order and this was officially his turf, all bets were off. "How's my genius protégé? Wait, no, don't answer that. I already know the answer." If Andrew was putting into this what he was supposed to, he would have felt like his life was being sapped away by this whole thing. It was amazing what whispered promises of fame, fortune and power could do to get someone to go along with a plan that involved destroying an entire town and everyone in it.

The part about everyone dying might have been conveniently left out. Details, details.

He lowered his voice to something more calm and soothing. "Only a little longer, kid. A few more hours and the hole will do the rest of the work for you." After there was a human sacrifice to seal the deal. He hadn't decided who to use yet. Hades enjoyed the idea of Harriet Jones staying right where she was far too much to use her. The Mountie was up there on the list. There were a few other names too, but they were still up on the surface, so he'd see. There was plenty of time to decide later. For now, he had to keep Andrew going. "Just think, Andrew, think of all the power you'll have as soon as this thing is over, think of how you'll show everyone your talent. They won't be able to ignore you now. A couple more hours."

Fandom was fighting a losing battle. The last chance to turn the tables was fast approaching.

Today, Andrew decided it was time to peruse some of the books Mr. Giles kept hidden away from the general public. It was nice having the keys.

Besides, it's not like the books themselves were dangerous -- well, at least not the majority of them. It was what one did with the knowledge obtained from those books that mattered. And lately, Andrew was feeling a little daring.

The beauty of their current surroundings made Andrew just a little sad. He knew why this was, but he wouldn't admit it, not even to himself.

Still, it didn't stop him from making a nice little arrangement of love charms, books on enchantments, and some of the more romantically scented candles on a little table near the front.

He pulled up a chair next to the open door and sat down with some of the books from the shop, flipping pages and wondering if there was a spell that could cure doubt.

Oiling the metal of her fan, Temari certain didn't look like she was paying any attention to the shop today.

Sprawled out in the grass, he was attempting to reenact one of his favorite Space Battles fight scenes, but his heart just wasn't in it. With an unexpected three kids for the weekend, it had taken a bit longer than planned to make it out of the apartment; neither Lulu nor Jean-Paul were familiar with exactly how many things one needed to do with a child, after all. Still, they eventually made their way down to the beach, Lulu carrying a basket, holding a late lunch picnic, hooked on one elbow, while she held Bell against her with the other arm.

"This should be nice," she said, smiling, as she laid down the basket. Putting Bell down to toddle around, with an admonition to stay close, she spread out the blanket from the top of the basket and lay down upon it. "A happy family, out for an afternoon at the beach."

Not far from where the Skeleton Tea had been held earlier in the day, there was a tent that had been erected, with thiny, gauzy material and bone-like poles. Not dirty. The lights were soft as the evening grew darker, casting a welcoming, yet vaguely spooky illumination on the proceedings.

The proceedings of PROM.

One side of the tent was open, backing against a grove of trees; there were a few lights among them, but for the most part they offered shadowy nooks for anyone who wished to be a bit apart from the main action. The rest of the tent was enclosed, save for the entrance, and the same skeletons who'd worked the Tea earlier were at the refreshments table, ready and willing to serve any students or chaperones who approached. At one end of the table was the ballot box for prom court voting.

The music was just getting started, and the dance floor was yet to fill up, but regardless, Fandom High Prom 2008 was underway!

It had been months since Andrew had worked at the Magic Box, so he took a bit of time before opening to remind himself what exactly it was he was supposed to be doing.

Still, he forgot little things like turning on the store lights lights, uncovering some of the displays, and setting up the register for the day.

Basically, he just unlocked the front door and sat down. He hadn't slept well, had a bit of a headache, and was still just feeling off in general.

He blamed the stasis. "Stupid stasis."
[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com
Andrew was feeling a little off. He hadn't been able to shake some of his bunny habits -- the spontaneous and lengthy naps, the compulsion to nibble anything green and leafy, the occasional little hop. He had considered staying home from work today, but having already missed his past two shifts, he forced himself out of bed and into town.

He opened the shop and took his normal spot behind the counter. Even the Magic Box seemed a little off to him. He kept noticing little things that had changed or sold or seemed out of place. And then there was the statue that he swore had been outside the shop when he opened this morning, but had vanished.

He pulled out a carrot and took a bite. There was a reassuring crunch. At least that seemed normal.
